A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Author George R. R. Martin Interview on the Inspiration for Robert Baratheon and also talks about marriage in Westeros
One of the huge screw ups IMO of the show writing was having Sansa marry Ramsey. Littefinger would NEVER have done that in the books, he came as close to loving Sansa as he was capable of the emotion.
Exactly. His love for Cat and then Sansa was the only thing that humanises the character, once he sold off Sansa he became two dimensional.
He wouldn't do it because he loved her but because it's dumb
Yeah it’s so dumb
D&D kinda forgot that Littlefinger was smart and that switching Sansa for Jeyne means the person he's been training and trying to make trust him will be tortured because of him
So much for being one of the most subtle people in Westeros, cause he literally gains nothing from their marriage
@@Ismail-kv3ex Sansa i luv u
I just finished the War of the Roses books series by Conn Iggulden, King Edward was clearly the main inspiration for Robert Baratheon, he also was a beast on the Battlefield, extremely strong and violent, but once he conquered the crown for the York House, he lost himself, was a terrible politician, but a marvelous warrior, sadly his brother betrayed his trust and allowed the Lancasters to regain the kingdom
Never really looked into the history of how Robert Baratheon came to power. Something about a rebellion. Not really sure
@@Chimera_166 It was a rebellion, in Edward IV's case it was against Henry VI, a weak and deceased king, Edward won the crown in the battle of Towton, but couldn't keep it for too long due to his gluttony and addiction in prostitutes and hunts, but regained the crown shortly after
Why sadly? What do you have against the Lancasters? Where they more violent than Edward, or do you prefer a violent monarch?
@@fordhouse8b Oh, hold your horses! I have nothing against the Lancasters buddy, I meant that being betrayed by your own brother is a sad thing, don't you agree?
@@PauloHenrique-to7fo Sure, a sad thing for him as an individual, but if he was a violent man and a terrible ruler, perhaps a joyous event for the world at large.

THE BREASTPLATE STRETCHER!!
Robert was a very underrated character in both the books and the series
He suck
He is incredibly memmorable in the show imo, he has some of the best season 1 dialogue
@@asongforthemostbeautifulwo6476 Yep, so fun to watch him be himself. Very good job by the actor, I think.
He was my favorite character
Robert is my favorite character always!
My favourite character on the show.
England’s bloodiest dynasty “the Plantagenets” narrated by this guy is amazing.
Love Dan Jones 💕
he's too far up his own arse
That is a good doc
Fun fact : Saint Edward the Confessor was the last of the Plantagenets.
The dynasty may have went down in history as "bloody" but it ended with a good man.
He’s also a fraud.
GODS I WAS STRONG THEN
GODS THE WRITING WAS STRONG THEN
Henry V, Henry VIII, Alexander the Great and all the other warrior kings of history who found conquering kingdoms easier than ruling them would be my main guesses.
Also Genghis Khan for the turmoil that his death caused.
Alexander the Great made some places he conquered (via marriages for example) to be self ruled, but faithful to him. You can't be a Conqueror and rule directly every single Kingdom you conquer ( especially if you are a capable conqueror with a gigantic empire) by yourself, you know you are still a human, not a God so to be in every place every single time...
Alexander died too early.
This is still the case to this day. Conquering is easier then ruling. Even if you study current military history, if you’re interested there is a conquest going on right now, in Afghanistan. After studying The Taliban, one has to admit they are resilient, ferocious fighters and brilliant military tacticians. Right now they are conquering district after district. Following the news it’s like medieval style. However I can guarantee you right now they will find conquering 1000000% easier then ruling. They are not statesmen nor politicians (they are nothing lol, other then radical clerics). There goverment will collapse after about 30-50yrs. It’s inevitable. It’s only the natural way of things. These people CANNOT rule or govern a country 🤷🏻♂️. Ruling is A LOT harder then conquering.
Henry VIII didn't conquer anything his military expeditions were failures.
@@cashcurtis No, but George was drawing on *other* inspirations from Henry8 for Robert.
Stannis is the rightful king 👑
Noone is boring in entire series as stannis.. he killed his own daughter.. that man have no mercy ..! He was rightful king but definitely not deserving one.
The man is too willing to give up his own morality. under his reign personal freedoms, like freedom of religion, will be gone. He isn’t the man to lift up a fallen enemy, either. How many would die before there is peace under his iron fist. Most options suck, including Danny, but at least she would kill in the name of protecting the weak, not because of a stringent sense of justice in the eyes of arbitrary law. You have the user name of a fan, otherwise I wouldn’t bother.
@@kiranparhad5578 you should read the books
@@ZackThoreson I find the quote from Donal Noye - “Stannis is pure iron, black and hard and strong, yes, but brittle, he’ll break before he bends” - interesting, because this is not the Stannis we see in the series, it’s the Stannis we hear about before the series started. His flexibility in forgiving his enemies, evidenced by Renly’s initial bannermen, presents a man who is so driven by the notion of duty that he is willing to put his personal grievances aside. A King who is so willing to bend his morals for what he sees as the greater good can only be a good king. His iron fist and legal right only exacerbate this in my eyes
@@henryruston9572 I will concede the point about raising his enemies up. He did it with the wildlings too, I guess. Putting aside “for the greater good” actions that are questionable at best, he doesn’t have the personality for the job. He isn’t a natural leader. His reaction to adversity is to sulk in isolation. Very few people like him on a personal level. Some respect him, for his past victories, but few would put down their life for him other than for the sake of honor or personal gain. Sure, he is fighting for the north and the real enemy, but he fights almost alone because no one likes him.
I would have guessed the obvious, Henry VIII.
Everyone knows him for being fat, but he only got that way after becoming king. But if that were the case, George would had him be married 3 or 4 times.
To be fair henry VIII is really Maegor the cruel with the many executed wives and even similar looks. But yeah in terms of physique for sure. Henry was a tall buff warrior who got fat later in life. Maegor never got fat and remained an extremely deadly warrior up to his death.
Henry got fat cause he got injured in a joust and developed a horrible infection on his leg, he was also thristy like Robert and produced many bastard children and like Robert only acknowledged one; Henry Fitzroy
It’s much more obviously Edward IV not Henry VIII
henry viii is a bit of a stretch (though i see where you are coming from). i would say Aegon IV would be more along the lines of Henry VIII
Physically, and in his peccadillos, you’re right, Henry is the obvious and nice fit.
At least robert followed his mentor’s marriage advice by marrying cersei unlike Edward with Warwick.
And how’d that work out for Robert
@@dredasilv8691 touché
It didn't work out for him but it did for edward lol..
I would say Robert was more Richard the Lionheart. Tough and brilliant commander with a big ass ego with bastards but no children. Put the crown under mega debt. Got killed on an accident overburden with his ego. Forgave a child on his death, (Richard forgave his killer, 11 yo) Baratheon forgave Dany
Funny enough in the first book Robert even contemplated abdicating his crown so he could become a sellsword commander and go on great adventures in Essos as he preferred that to the boring life of ruling his kingdom. Richard pretty much did just that when he took up the cross and joined the Third Crusade.
Exactly what I though, it’s similar to King Richard the Lionheart
Then the mercenary that was with him flayed the kid alive anyway and then hung him.
No lie, having a Crusade might have actually benefitted Robert’s reign. If he waged and oversaw a war in Essos, particularly against the cities of Slaver’s Bay, a lot of problems would’ve been solved.
Robert’s reign was only ever solidified after crushing the Greyjoy Rebellion, another war would further legitimize his power and show his strength of arms. It would also bring more loyal and capable knights and sell swords to his cause.
Leaving the realm to men interested in ruling like Jon Arryn, Stannis the mannis, and even Tywin Lannister would lead to some more hands-on ruling from capable men.
The Faith may forgive much of his debt and even pronounce it a holy war; in the eyes of the Seven, slavery is an abomination.
Same goes for the Iron Bank. Oh they’d never fully absolve the debts but Bravos would certainly support someone crushing their enemies in Essos, and it becomes personal as well as political considering they’re a city of escaped slaves.
And being away from Cersei, fighting battles, waging what could arguably (propaganda certainly would help) be called a ‘just war’ would do wonders for Robert’s health in mind and body.
I don’t think it would be perfect, in fact it would probably lead to a very different kind of disaster, not even counting White Walkers and supernatural threats no one knows about. Robert would probably die by a stray arrow or get poisoned or accidentally suffocate under a pile of whores.
But he would still have preferred it to dying drunk, killed by a pig. And the realm might’ve, maybe, have been spared a War of Five Kings.
@@timothyflynn2738 true.
But let us not forget that it could also spare a War of Five Kings if Robert didn't called Lyanna's name while sleeping with Cersei.
Because it would mean Cersei wouldn't had aborted their first child , so none of the incest kids would had a claim.

Literally edward IV's story and robert Baratheons story are almost identical. Like literally almost the exact same lol
And Stannis and Richard the third
@@bakthihapuarachchi3447 I love those 2 comparisons. Anne Neville and Sansa Stark are very similar even to the fact both were ginger!
Not really because Robert Baratheon didn’t meet Ned Stark. And did Edward IV say *STOP THIS MADNESS IN THE NAME OF YOUR KING* ??
@@ericcheltenham7001 edward iv had his own Ned Stark called William Hastings who was betrayed and unjustly executed by Richard iii despite being a staunch loyalist to the previous king, Richard's brother: edward iv
Would you mind reminding an out of touch american how exactly? I know my British history better than most but these finer details are where I get lost.
Edward the fourth is a big inspiration to Robert, but what about also Henry the eighth.
Henry the 8th is known for wife killing so no
On the book Robert was 6.6 much taller than Ned stark even if he got fat in his last ages ….

wow i had no idea Dan Jones was so fucking handsome
I see a lot of Henry VIII in Robert.
Henry 8 enters the chat.
Hopefully he gets some inspiration to finish his book too
When I think of Robert Baratheon I think of Ulysees S Grant. They are great generals and warriors but not leaders of countries or politicians.
That awful scene when Littlefinger tells Sansa she's marrying Ramsay Bolton. In that moment I could see how big of hacks those writers were and quit watching the show. All of their failures on full display in that one scene. It was so satisfying when everyone else hated the final season, it was your own fault for not seeing it coming. Almost like George, by leaving the show, had written real life. Out of all the characters he had gotten people to love before killing them off, this was his greatest troll.
