  • On this episode of Man Ginger Customs we address the light and sometimes scary steering of lifted Jeeps. We want Jess to be comfortable driving the CJ and to that we need to settle the steering down. We show you how to determine your caster, how to fix it, and how to tighten your steering box if needed! Jess is going to love driving this 1985 Jeep CJ7 now!

    My 82 CJ is dangerous to drive . Stock height , new springs , ball joints , shackles, the works. It’s all over the road with tight steering. You just saved the day, my caster measured at 2 deg . The pinion is pointed towards the sky! I literally parked this Jeep in storage 7 years ago . This Jeep is very nice , very original and it’s an automatic. I can’t figure out how it got like that . I know that it had worn ball joints and we replaced literally everything with stock parts (even springs ) It was at that point I noticed it drove like crap even after an alignment. Now I know what direction to go. Thanks

    • @madgingercustoms
      @madgingercustoms  Рік тому +1

      If it's stock height you may want to see if the leaf springs are in backwards. I've heard that has the same effect.

    Wow Sir, I finally found a video addressing exactly the issue in my jeep including the fact that I have an 83 jeep with 77 frame. I have spent crazy money putting band aids on m jeep and getting a bit closer but NEVER fixing the core issue. I pray/hope that my issue is the same as yours and can't wait to install and try it out. The wandering in the steering has perplexed professionals around me and myself but from what you described, I hope i have found the issue. I will comment again but SINCERELY, thank you for this video!!!!!!

      @madgingercustoms  8 місяців тому +1

      I'm sure it will be better with some added caster. The majority of all wandering and light steering is geometry issues. I've actually helped several guys address this over email and FB Messenger after we put this video out. Please check back and let me know if it helped!! Good luck.

    My 83 Dodge Ram is at 1.2 degree caster. I'm gonna go with a 2 degree shim and set it at the high side of the factory tolerance (3.5 degree) Hopefully that'll do it. If not, I'll do a 4 degree. You described the symptoms I was having perfectly and explained how to correct it. Thank you! (My ride 83 Dodge Ram W150 with Skyjacker 4" spring lift / 33x12.5x15 MT's)

    Looking at my 3” spring lifted CJ which I think drives pretty well has some front shims installed. They look aluminum and probably about 2 degrees, but we installed them 20 years ago backwards, to make the driveshaft angle better, not thinking about caster. I had the Jeep aligned recently and caster is +1 on both sides. I haven’t tried measuring using your technique I’m at least going to rotate those shims around for fun, might try some 4 degree wedges later.

    Great info. I don’t know if I’ll ever use it but I can tell you know what your talking about.
    Some of the issues you went over, I had back in high school with my Jeep. I’m lucky I never died!
    The shims would have fixed my problem.
    Shimming it and getting the ball joints back to the right angle will probably help them last longer too.

    Nice one!!! Your subs have really exploded!!! Caster is a really overlooked angle. I learned most of what I know abought doing wheel alignments from older mechanics and using old alignment machines. These kids now a days are like if it's in the green it's good. A note: ideally you want +0.5 degrees more in the right to account for road crown. Not really possible on Solid Front axle unless you cut the inner C and turn it, and in my mind not worth it if it is driving good. On my Ranger I uses 79 Bronco axles and extended radius arms. Then It becomes a quest to find an operating angle that gives a good camber angle and a good driveline angle. (I have no idea how much lift it has it clears 37s on a Ranger 5.5 EB coils). Fortunately, there are camber inserts for the Dana 44 and I think we ended up with around 5 degrees. Wow It's probably been 15 years LOL. So after all the long windedness Front wheel drive and non power steering cars have less caster, like almost none and power steering cars and trucks have more now that you have power steering to overcome the larger amounts of caster. And as you stated more caster makes the car more stable on the road at faster speeds. Sorry about the randomness of all of that. LOL I've been busy and need to get caught up on a lot of peoples content. Keep cranking them out!!
