When to clinch
Hii , I'm 58kg , Should I cut weight for my first amateur boxing match ?
More videos about the mentality of a boxer. More so about what it takes mentality to be able to compete.
It's crazy how much more exhausting sparring is from regular training.
Mainly from being to tense and not relaxed enough. Comes with experience though.
Sparring is 70% of training :)
Sparring becomes easier after a while , i find heavy bag more exhausting
@@oogs9114 no cap after I built up the endurance and have been boxing for awhile I sparred again and I felt like I could go another 3 rounds
@@mateogarca6532 yeah man , heavy bag with 16/18oz gloves is great way to build endurance especially for sparring
Sparring is the most fun part of training really. Even just after one round of sparring i feel like i learned a lot more than weeks of bag/mitt work
yeah for real, Sparring is very beneficial makes u realise what works and what doesnt.
Facts bro, I started boxing like a month ago and fighting is probably the most fun thing I've done in my life
Nah foreal though you speaking facts hella people hit the mitts or the bag thinking it will be effective in sparring i mean it will but the more sparring the better you’ll become
Sparring is to use the things you learned on a bag. Mitt work should be the think you learn the most tbh
Until you step into the ring for a real fight and all that goes out the window with your adrenaline on overdrive
1. Practice
2. Basics of boxing/ don’t showcase skills use basics
3. Listen to your coach
4. Keep your eyes on your opponent
5. Breath
6. Pace yourself control your state
7. Think about defense
8. Knowing your sparring partner
9. You might cry/watery eyes
10. Visualization
I love the "might cry" part lol.
Iv got a massive nose so leave most sparring sessions looking like I need ice cream and girly films haha. Having a big nose is a real problem when it gets caught
Spoiler
I don’t care if I cry, that’s how boys should be taught, THE HARD FREAKING WAY BABY!!!

I hated sparring. Always struggled to find that happy medium between light and hard. Great video though bro. 🤜🏼🤛🏼
I always recommend light mate
@@Tony_Jeffries Give me a good pad session any day lol
How can you be mad for boxing if you dont like sparring ? It is what makes the sport i belive the thrill in a fight you dont get from any other sport (no hate if you like ur pads and your fitness thats great too i just dont understand)
Try sparring with rules or purposes. For example you re only allowed to defense and your partner goes slow
@@olally7270 hello mate its hard to find the right medium in sparring nice to see you here commenting
Spreading your boxing knowledge to new generation is really appreciated man. Good job.
More to come!
@@Tony_Jeffries yup
i dont get scared in sparring at all, imagine your fighting a younger sibling. i also know im in a safe place and if i need to stop for some time i can.
Nice! You must be confortable with your partners already
except if they're 6 inches taller than you
I AM the younger sibling lol
I wanna try sparring sometime.. Ill have the mindset of knowing ill get hit so i know not to let my emotions take over.. if i get hit take and keep working
@@HeriB1994 now that I've been sparring for a little bit that's a great attitude to have! However, stay calm and breathe every time you get hit in the stomach toughen it up. Also try to be as calm as possible so you're not drawing to much energy while sparring. Also work on those blocks!
Your advice and practicing on my own with your training videos is what helped me to get the courage and ability to join a club 5 months ago, Ive now been training with your videos for about a year, now as well as with my coach. My first amateur fight is March 27th, and in a massive part it is thanks to you! I hope you see this comment. Lol. Thank you for everything! Keep inspiring
EDIT/UPDATE: I WON!!
best of luck brother
Congrats mate well done, that’s amazing.
@@assaultj2976 thank you!!
@L V thank you!!
Fookin nice one budd..
All the Best...
I did all the bags and mitts and drills for months…but when I finally started sparring-it was whole new thing (almost)- controlling pace, space/range, footwork- creating angles, positionally-advantageous angles, breathing, closing range, defending and countering, re-adjusting constantly according to the offense , clinching/grappling/wrangling-untangling, posturing-defensive/offensive, psychological conditioning- yes-conditioning oneself to getting hit, takings feeling like you’re losing and mentally adjusting to it quickly, developing sportsmanship, etc… sparring offered a whole bunch of important lessons… (I’ve documented some of my progress in sparring training with coach-see for yourself)
I agree mate, sparring and real matches are on a different level.. but your trainings will surely help you on the ring
I love sparring! One of my favorites things to do in the gym. I like to spar people that are better than me, then I can learn a lot of good tricks and things.
Same I always felt that training and sparring with folks who are better than me is the fastest and best way to improve
I got my ass kicked today in a sparring match and I’m not going to lie it hurt my pride and or ego. I expected so much more from myself. The guy I went against gave me a nose bleed and said that it’s because if I throw a hook he will throw a hard hit. How should I even feel?
I love sparring, it’s really helps you to simulate real life opponents and fixing on mistakes and gaps that you think you didn’t make
I prefer light sparring now mate
Sparring is like a real fight, you get nervous but as the seconds go you start feeling a little more relaxed and comfortable, great vid and tips.
Sparring is not a real match. You can go as hard as a real boxing match every time you spar

ive always gotten my ass handed to me in sparring and this cuased me to build up a fear of sparring but after this vid i feel alot more confident to go back in the ring
I have my first charity boxing match coming up in July and Tony's videos have given me so many incredible tips 👌
Going through the fear barrier is the hard part. But our opponents make us. Without them, our skills are meaningless. So I'm always grateful for their time.
I agree thanks for sharing mate
All the tips given in this video are time tested and true. Each and every tip is an echo of what I have heard from my coach and my mentors over the years. Hearing it all in one video is a real treat.
Tony Jeffries is articulate and crystal clear in his presentation. If you know what I mean, this could very well be a testament to what he said, "Hit and not be hit". After all, Tony has been there and done it all in boxing.
Literally he has given golden tips! I never even heard coaches tell fighters this stuff. He is the best ! Thank you sir! Knowledge is power!
Love your videos, Tony. I've been doing Muay Thai for a years, but these videos have helped improved my sparring and my training. Muay Thai in the states incorporates a lot of Western Boxing and your videos are invaluable teaching tools.
Just found your channel it’s inspired me to start hitting the heavy bag after my workouts
I really wanna thank you from the bottom of my heart Tony ❤ bcs of your videos I'm so much better at boxing right now and also my couch starts to be jealous of you 😄😄 you are a legend Tony 💪💪

This channel is a gem 💎 .. so glad I came across it and subscribed big fan
Had my second class, and both times I was sooooo nervous because I'm training with someone who is sooooooo much better than me. Still learning the basics and pivots/movement and correct breathing. But I'll strive for my greatness, and know I'm doing everything I can to make myself better!
Love this guy, golden advice and a class act....thanks for everything you do Tony :)

Thank you for your time this important info 1 practice the basics 2 keeping your eye on your opponent 3 pace yourself hit and not be hit gotcha think about you're defense

Glad you like them! More to come mate
Thank you coach
I've learned a lot from you mate. Thanks!
Great Vid man
thanks for advices !
We video the sparring, it´s a good resource to go on and do slowmo to understand where we´re failing! good video mate, saludos desde Mexico!
Phenomenal video as always. I remember my first sparing session I didn't wanna hurt anybody but I really wanted to box so I got very good and defense but had very very poor offense and I jabbed like 99% of the time and landed no power punches in sparing or in a once in a blue moon heavy side spar. Now I feel I have good control my how much power input I have. With tons of light sparing never went home with a headache and learned a lot
Ha! Same here. Only once i sent a sparring partner to the canvas, but it had more to do with technique than power (upper to lower part of solar plexus, almost a mistake) and felt very bad. Fortunately, a close friend of his wanted revenge, so he tried to decapitate me in the next round... but my defense was good. We ended (three of us) as good friends.
He give you the best advice dor you to feel comfortable and calm for sparring ❤️
I hope my opponents don't watch your videos cause they are so damn good💯😂
haha Nice one!
I'm actually having a spar today so I need this video.
I remember visualizing the sparring session for the next day while on bed to sleep. Thinking about that headmovement and counter. Sometimes, while falling sleep, my left arm jerked while in my mind I was throwing a counter jab. I use to do it 3 times a week and miss it a lot. Love this sport.
Excellent tips!
Even after 50 fights (especially as i got older) i HATED sparring - was always hard to broach wether to give to much or not enough..without looking soft or like a bully
I got similar thing, can't find this "volume". Sometimes I think I going like a bully because of high pressure.. :/
Thanks for the great videos at the moment Tony!
Glad you like them James!
@@Tony_Jeffries do a video on how to set up combos with the jabs

Thanks Tony, you got me into boxing for the first time a few weeks ago, when I came here for P.E. Now I want to start doing it properly. Great video.

Great video, thank you!
Top man 👍 thanks for the advice and reassurance
Any time Dan,
Thanks. Very good video.
All great tips! To me, #3 (sparring partner) is the most relevant. We’ve had some sparring sessions at our gym that have gone sideways because of the first time/novice sparring partners have little control and don’t know how to pull their punches. This is especially troubling when the novice sparring partner is larger and can strike with more force. As the video suggests, it’s best to work with an experienced sparring partner (or even your trainer, if they’re up for it or able) that can help you get comfortable in the ring (breathing, movement, rhythm, etc) and work with you to improve your boxing skills. Thanks for sharing this, Tony!
Glad it helped you Tony ma man 👊
Thanks !
Great stuff Tony.
Probably the best online one to one boxing coach you could ask for, work rate is mad.
Thanks for the compliment mate, appreciate it a lot
