You have a time/space continuum problem with the Princeton II on the Carlton solo as it was recorded long before Rivera was at Fender. BUT it was a Princeton modded by Rivera as all the hip studio guys had at the time. So...sort of right in any case. As neither of you was alive at the time (either time really) we’ll let you go. Great show guys. Zach nerding out on pedals is my kind of nonsense.
I know this is an older "Dipped in" but it's a hoot! You guys are great together and I've enjoyed all the episodes I've seen. It's fun to see you laughing and enjoying yourself, Rhett. On your own channel you are often very serious and intense and this channel is much lighter and almost whimsical. Keep it up; I'm subscribing. Enjoy hearing your take on a TS. Got my 1st one in '82 and it was my first and only overdrive from then on. Sometime in the 2000s it disappeared, but I'd retired from playing in bands (after 40 years) and started teaching guitar at a magnet high school for the performing arts. The classroom had small Fender SS amps with gain and built in effects, so didn't need one. Taught there for 12 years and in the middle of that time started playing out 2 or 3 nights a week with a Funk, then a Blues band and a fellow teacher knew a guy getting rid of all his gear. He picked up a Strat and rig cheap and sold me a TS808 for $35 ! Don't know how old it is but it works great! I use it with my 56 RI Strat into a Blonde Princeton RI along with a Boss digital delay and sometimes a Univibe. It's funny...I have guys come up to the stage and tell me I'm getting great tones, then they look down at the floor and see the Tubescreamer and get a puzzled look on their faces. Haha! I guess it's all in how you set it.
41:38 Are you using it (wrong 😋) through a clean amp? The 250 is great for tightening up the flabby bottom end of an overdriven Marshall SLP or Tweed amp.
2024, no covid anymore, Blues and Rock is mainstream in the world, Mythos pedals is the biggest pedal company... The Podcast Dont have intro yet and the Band still has no name
For me the TS really shines on a brighter tone. If I'm playing a cleanish tone with the bright switch on and my Tele, TS just kills when I turn it on. I do use an analog man silver mod too with doesn't hurt either. The pedal has been with me 18 years, and I'm never going to sell it. Still brings joy. :)
The issue with TS's is using them with mid forward amps and just plain over doing it. I see it more as a mid boost switch/coloring tool. Especially in an amp like a Deluxe Reverb that doesn't have a mid control. It makes the "Tubes Scream" when you Push the amp a bit and leave the level and gain at 3 or below on the TS. Also people turn the tone knob way too high. 10 o clock is a good sweet spot. I actually rehoused my TS and painted it lol no one will ever know its a TS!
Yes. I use a TubeScreamer into a very dirty Marshall for when I need that extra oomph. Not as my main dirt tone. It doesn’t do that with clean Fender amps. But with the gain and tone turned down a bit it gets a nice mild OD into a clean amp.
II have the same problem as Rhett! The best TS-Style pedal I realy like is the EQD Plumes cause of the increased headroom. Most TS loveres would say this isn't a real TS! The next best Pedal to a "real" TS is my Analogman modded Maxon SD9 with the silver mod. With the drive all down and the volume all the way up and the tone at 2 O'Clock I can use it realy for great leads or imitating horn parts. Always into a breaking up plexi-style amp with a strat! Thanks for the discussion!
Great episode. The Shadowbox idea is gold - and it brings a whole new meaning to "he's got the box" [with props to Josh]. Also wanna see how you mod the TS.
The TS is a Tool if you use it right you just might like it, like the one guy said stack it with a trebley type pedal, like a germanium style treble booster, that perfect blend of mids in the TS Tames the ice pickiness of the booster into cream dream heaven. That's the only mod you'll need.
28:23 Deadset one of the funniest episodes, you guys are great together. Awesome work fellas! Favourite bit - Nailey It! Strumbelled through it..... Haha...It does that thing....🧐 Dare I say dumbbelly...🤮🤮🤮🤮 Nooooo! Hahahaha tooo funny!!! 😂😂 Best episode question though.... So with the chip... What is it doing in a tube screamer?
I love my Analogman modded TS Always come back to it A Diaz Ranger and the TS is good for me But it's a first run TS9 Don't know if that makes any difference My first pedal was an early 70s MXR Dist +
Part of the reason why a lot of people don't like ts pedals is they don't realize the tone knob is in its nuetral position all of the way down, not "noonish"
Loved the show!! Especially picturing the TransAm with “T”tops! Lol I can so relate to the relative asking if you play Skynard!! Lmao Band name-Slow Runner???
I don’t particularly like the TS sound either, but I have the Mini version on my board before my overdrives and fuzz, but with the Overdrive right down and the Level on full. That way it nicely fattens up the lead sound. Obviously I’m not alone using it like that!
So I love high headroom as well, my overdrive of choice is also green, but it's an MXR Shin Juku. For some reason I never hear anyone talking about them but I love it.
I want a microtonal guitar so I can try alternate tunings on custom string and complain. You need to use parallel coils more often. Hot pickups with a higher resonance and in Parallel. Then you can back off the treble a little and still have all the good stuff. So... Like series parallel all your stuff. P Bass into a fuzz.. Parallel. Wakes it up.. The LED MOD IS ALWAYS GOOD. I like using a fuzz face and volume turned down for everything. 42:50 just a single cap and we'll make a divider network from there. Just don't touch it Power switch pot. I've got some 10k that enables a fuzz I built and another that actually turn on the tone shaping stack.
The 9 sucks, ts808 is the ticket and if it doesn't sound good it's not the pedal, it's the player. It sounds killer when I play it with my strat. Sounded good for SRV. Sounds good for anyone that knows how to use it.
Absolutely NOT the pedal for a rhythm tone as Rhett was playing, but with the gain up and some humbuckers it makes for a rather tasty lead tone in the right hands (ie. Steely Dan, Carlton, Ford, etc.)
I own one of those amps (tsa15h) and think it’s great, amplifies my guitar and came with a tube screamer built in, and has an effects look for a reverb or different pedals, like Rhett said what ever blows your skirt up

Rhett prefers ac 30 style amps it's no surprise he doesn't get the TS thing. But... A strat, a TS and a Super reverb rocks!!! Cliché? Yess by al means. Just like cheese burger and fries 😂😂
Tubescreamers used to sound good because that's about all there was. Now, it's unlimited. Instead of the Tube Screamer, get the Earthquaker Plumes. Same prioce, and 3 times the pedal.
How about asking a few friends/tubers to suggest band names. Greg Kock would have some cracking suggestions. Mick & Dan, Pete Thorn ...etc. "ladies & gentlemen .. here are the Clean Tones!". The Stomp Boxers ... I know, sounded better in my head.
I bought a Screamer when they came out, (roughly) and I had for a long time before I sold it for $10.00. And then along came that guy... and wait a minute, what.. :0)
I feel like the tube screamer is that. You either like it or you don't. Rhett doesn't so you two should call a spade a spade. The moment you open the stomp box and force a square into a triangle is the moment you don't like the TS. Sure it will look like a green TS box, but if under the hood it's a modified blues breaker then you don't have a TS. Move on and agree to disagree.
I have four of these in different versions - and they all suck. Terrible sounding pedals. If it wasn’t for Stevie, no one would be using these. Just so many better overdrive pedals out there.

“Royal Scam” 1976, Princeton Reverb II 1982. Yeah, I had to look it up.
🤣🤣🤣
Gotta keep em in check
I thought it was a tweed Deluxe. Becker and Fagan weren’t down with the Boogie
I like the direction Shull is going with his ideas and outlook on videos. His explorative content and mindset is refreshing.
Rhett’s southern drawl is seriously so good. I think that should be your alter ego. Sounds like a Frhett Shull to me 😜
TS are great for stacking after with a more full spectrum OD. Cleans up the bottom and keeps the mid hump around 750-800 hz.
It's pretty much a Fender low wattage amp accessory. Cleans up the flub, and boosts the mids.
Rhett you “distant second cousin” bit killed me. Gotta bring that character back.
Same here ! They should do characters like that or something similar, I think it would be really funny and people would look forward to it

Exactly!
I feel like the tubescreamer thing shines in a live setting and in the mix? vs just playing one by yourself
You are wanting an Earthquaker Devices “Plumes” pedal. Switchable clipping.
Wow. I just said that. That pedal is awesome.

Something about that Wide Sky or the way Rhett attacks it(?) always makes it sound like there’s a subtle vibrato pedal turned on.
