Pretending is one of my favorite songs that "Slow Hand" ever released. He had spent the 70's trying out a lot of different sounds, and by the time he released this single, he had perfected his unique sound. Without saying a word, you can, without question, instantly identify an Eric Clapton song. He is truly on the Mount Rushmore of guitar God's. Long may he reign.

There ain't no pretending when he plays this cut, which is one of many faves that he plays. I gotta give it to him he is the ultimate guitar wiz. I've done my research and trust me when I tell you I do my research. I mean I'm talking about some of the greatest guitar playing like Santana, Robert Cray, Dire Straits, Joe Bonamassa, BB King, Muddy Waters, and I can go on and on. Gary Moore. But I've got to be honest and tell you my fave all-time legendary, iconic guitarist is Stevie Ray Vaughn hands down. I mean he can jam the guitar. But OMG. He dont have the history and record breaking history that Eric Clapton has. And im 59 yrs old and started listening to Eric when i was 15 I heard the song "Cocaine" I beleive it was 1977. But there's no telling what or where he would be by now. Bless his heart and soul he would be 70 yrs 🙏🏼of age and would he be playing at this age. Of course he would. I remember in one of the interviews he was saying who is this, Ive got find out who it is by the end of the day. And he did. Just like Eric Clapton 78 yrs old. But he is a testament of legends and I love Eric Clapton I've been playing almost all his songs. He taught me how to play his music. But I could play a little Stevie Ray. Texas flood, little sister, all his great songs except 2 songs "Mary had little lamb" and "Voodoo Child". Yeah he's my dude and I pray that he RIP 🙏🏼next to his 1959 Fender Stratocaster. Eric has been jammin his guitar since 1962 61 yrs and 9 bands most notably Yard Birds, Derrick and the Domino's, Cream, Blind Faith, The Roosters. He truly is a super star legendary musician and I don't believe there will ever be another one like him. He's played almost 3500 world wide European shows in North America Asia,South America, and Africa. The Royal Albert Hall a record 218 times since 1964 a total of 6 Guitar festivals he's had a record total of 19 Grammys more than anyone ever. Erick Troncoso hell yeah. My second fave off Journeyman. Anything for Your Love is my favorite. Journey man is definitely one of my top five Clapton albums.
I'm a guitar player/singer for a very long time, grew up in the second decade of rock. I sort of feel I was put on earth to do this. The more I know about Clapton, I also read his very honest book, the more respect and admiration I have for this beloved man. For someone who thinks and breathes guitar, especially the Stratocaster, I feel I can understand him and truly admire his authenticity and dedication. They say it takes 10,000 hours to get really proficient at something, he's probably put in 300,000! He's a no shit-taking kind of guy and that's just part of his integrity. Beck has left the building, and it's a very different world since when rock was young. When Clapton and Page go that difference will be even more poignant.
Flood of rain is Eric's heart. Once you get past the pain, you are forever changed and know what to look for when someone says they love you. Dont give your heart❤ first. Just wait and see if the person is. Pretending.
Pretending is an absolutely awesome great straight up rock n roll song by Eric Clapton and totally rocks it needs to fully cranked up all the way to full maximum volume.🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
This was a great song at the end of an excellent decade of music! One of my faves from Eric ( actually there are many! ). This was greatly enhanced by the backup vocals of the great Chaka Khan. In fact, a lot of the greatest hits of the decade featured Chaka Khan ( " Higher Love" by Steve Winwood, also comes to mind ). A diva, no less, in her own right. Eric's guitar is truly second to none. One of the best lyrics I've ever heard. were in this song " You never knew who you used to think you are.... How strange" Absolutely priceless! This man is pure GENIUS!
And now... the winner of 1989's Grammy Award for best R&B Performance, Song of the Year, Best Contemporary Blues Album or WETTEST VIDEO OF ALL TIME goes to... the one... the only... ERIC CLAPTON!

Clapton at his Armani-loving, modelizing peak. Perfection in this video, the hair, the look, everything. Song is fantastic too - didn't know that Chaka was on backup vocals here.

Good god his tone is on another level. I was born in 1965. My first concert was Ted Nugent (who I thought was god) in 1982...I saw a t-shirt that said "Clapton Is God." At the time I was confused. Now I get it.

Damn, had not heard this in a long time. I had forgotten how Clapton was/is great. He has been an incredible musical influence in my generation, such a talented individual!
Whoever decided to film this in the rain had massive brass balls of crystallized diamond steel. I can't even imagine how difficult that must have been!
EC opened with this song when I saw him in concert at The Spectrum in the very early 90s. I was in awe. In fact, I was in awe for the next 2 1/2 hours.
Those kids who made fun of you made fun of millions of us I love Erics music. He always tries to keep the music right grateful I got to see him again in Columbus
This song makes me wanna cruise in a 70s Cadillac Deville convertible through Kansas on the interstate with the volume cranked and the white lines passing to the beat of the music. Clapton jamming on the guitar is kick ass on so many levels.
Journeyman is an amazing album. It is one of the first ones I've ever bought in my life. I sincerely suggest anybody who loves Clapton to have this CD. From start to end, an authentic gem!
This is one of if not my all time favorite Clapton song. I love his guitar tone and solos on this song. The video itself has weathered well (no pun intended). It is classy and fits the song very well; sexy without exploiting, bluesy without being depressing.
I love this song so much and I love, equally, the style of the video....the fire, the pouring rain....makes it almost as raw-feeling as the original and matchless "Layla."
Great Video.

This and "August" are my favorite albums of his Warner Bros. period. Unfortunately, they both got slammed in reviews, especially "August."
This is by far my favorite followed by Slowhand. I feel like Journeyman was sort of a resurrection of the old Clapton with the raging guitar work

Clapton at his Armani-loving, modelizing peak. Perfection in this video, the hair, the look, everything. Song is fantastic too - didn't know that Chaka was on backup vocals here.
When this came out...absolutely brilliant...and it still stands the test
One of Clapton's better songs. It still holds up after all these years.👍
Any time it rains out here, I play this song. It seems perfect for the dreary weather, listening to a man betrayed...
actual music 🤘
🥇I bought a Eric Clapton Signature Series Fender Stratocaster " Blackie " Best Investment I Have Ever Made .... And a 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp ... Now I Sound Like Robin Trower ✨✨✨🎼🎼🎼🎼🎸⚡️
Good god his tone is on another level. I was born in 1965. My first concert was Ted Nugent (who I thought was god) in 1982...I saw a t-shirt that said "Clapton Is God." At the time I was confused. Now I get it.
A song that’s not played on the radio that often. Probably my favorite Eric Clapton song
This song has the greatest rhythm even for an old man at 70, still trying to push it home. Yea Baby, thanks Eric, you're still the bomb !!!
Mr Clapton like the finest of wines, gets better and better with time. 🎸
Eric i love this track . I saw this tour at the Albert Hall . The Same Week i went to the Blues Concert . And i went to Back again to Journey Man again all live . It was Life Changing . U were Brilliant each night !

Love To Everyone ❤️
Pretending ! *electric guitar , keyboards, Electric arrangement In the rain !!! Love Clapton !!!
This is my favorite grocery store song. I can attest that playing your Strat in the rain gives you that Univibe sound and makes your keyboard player stomp his feet as if he actually likes playing in the rain.
Grew up with these records of the Master (Parents from the 50's) and absolutely love it till today❤️ thank you for all these great music
"Eric Clapton" says it all. Nothing more need be said. The end!
Pretending, bad love and such similiar songs are my favorite Clapton era
My dad and the neighbor used to pull the Cerwin Vegas out to the back deck and put the circa ‘93 Kenwood 120w per channel on a hurting to this CD.
Thanks for sharing this
[Verse 1]
How many times must we tell the tale?
How many times must we fall?
Living in lost memory
You just recalled
Working on the sound of the band
Trying to get the music right
Two go out working
Three stay home at night
[Chorus]
That's when she said she was pretending
Like she knew the plan
That's when I knew she was pretending
Pretending to understand
Pretending, pretending
Pretending, pretending
[Verse 2]
Satisfied but lost in love
Situations change
You're never who you used to think you are
How strange
[Chorus]
That's when she said she was pretending
Like she knew the plan
That's when I knew she was pretending
Pretending to understand
Pretending, pretending
Pretending, pretending
[Verse 3]
I get lost in alibis
Sadness cannot prevail
Everybody knows strong love
Can't fail
[Bridge]
Don't be pretending about how you feel
Don't be pretending that your love is real
Don't be pretending about how you feel
Don't be pretending that your love is real
[Outro]
Pretending, pretending
Pretending, pretending
Thanks needed this
Damn, had not heard this in a long time. I had forgotten how Clapton was/is great. He has been an incredible musical influence in my generation, such a talented individual!
Whoever decided to film this in the rain had massive brass balls of crystallized diamond steel. I can't even imagine how difficult that must have been!
Thanks. (from Brazil)
I'm pretending I can sing along to this now.
lol
I can sing along, and it's STILL: LOL!
chefgiovanni I learned guitar from this guy...or at least I can keep up. Maybe that's why it became stale except for posperity's sake.
Runnin on faith
I'm pretending I can play along to this xD
EC opened with this song when I saw him in concert at The Spectrum in the very early 90s. I was in awe. In fact, I was in awe for the next 2 1/2 hours.
What a great opening track to an album. Journeyman is such a great album and Pretending is such a great song and Clapton is a great musician.
Eric Clapton? A big fan. A guy who has had hits over five decades.
He’s definitely not the only one who has - take Elton John for one, and there are many more to add to the list imo!
Never pretend...be honest with your feelings❤️
Those kids who made fun of you made fun of millions of us I love Erics music. He always tries to keep the music right grateful I got to see him again in Columbus
@ERIC CLAPTON PRIVATE CHANNEL. I'm clicking away
@ERIC CLAPTON PRIVATE CHANNEL. it didn't work

watching the water droplets come off the drums as the drummer rattles on the snare is so darn cool.
damn he can make that strat talk
mike richardson awesome
mike richardson why yes he can
No. He can make it sing
no doubt
a lot of so-called "Clapton Purists" hated and shitcanned this record. I love it. Tearing us Apart is also a great song.
Come rain or shine, Clapton NEVER misses a gig. Now THAT is a real pro!
This song makes me wanna cruise in a 70s Cadillac Deville convertible through Kansas on the interstate with the volume cranked and the white lines passing to the beat of the music. Clapton jamming on the guitar is kick ass on so many levels.
There is something so bad ass about a legendary guitarist (Clapton, SRV, etc.) wailing while in the rain.
Journeyman is an amazing album. It is one of the first ones I've ever bought in my life. I sincerely suggest anybody who loves Clapton to have this CD. From start to end, an authentic gem!
Saw him 4 times on this tour !!
Met him too !!
Backstage .. I was 19 😊
He probably smashed
That Guitar tone...
Who is this Tony?
This is one of if not my all time favorite Clapton song. I love his guitar tone and solos on this song. The video itself has weathered well (no pun intended). It is classy and fits the song very well; sexy without exploiting, bluesy without being depressing.
I love this song so much and I love, equally, the style of the video....the fire, the pouring rain....makes it almost as raw-feeling as the original and matchless "Layla."
