Aaron you have the confidence and assurance of knowing that you have taste and there is no explaining their ignorance. 20 years from now people will still be listening to Eric Clapton, and grunge will be forgotten like punk rock. And music scholars will studying Eric Clapton 100 years from now. Be thankful you have learned to appreciated Eric Clapton. Some people eat steaks while others settle for dog food. Listen to the rich tone out of Eric's guitar. PLAY IT LOUD!
Pretending is one of my favorite songs that "Slow Hand" ever released. He had spent the 70's trying out a lot of different sounds, and by the time he released this single, he had perfected his unique sound. Without saying a word, you can, without question, instantly identify an Eric Clapton song. He is truly on the Mount Rushmore of guitar God's. Long may he reign.
Having lived through a similar relationship this song really hits home... Been a Clapton fan since I was about 11 or 12....I'm 65 now! Long live Eric!!
There ain't no pretending when he plays this cut, which is one of many faves that he plays. I gotta give it to him he is the ultimate guitar wiz. I've done my research and trust me when I tell you I do my research. I mean I'm talking about some of the greatest guitar playing like Santana, Robert Cray, Dire Straits, Joe Bonamassa, BB King, Muddy Waters, and I can go on and on. Gary Moore. But I've got to be honest and tell you my fave all-time legendary, iconic guitarist is Stevie Ray Vaughn hands down. I mean he can jam the guitar. But OMG. He dont have the history and record breaking history that Eric Clapton has. And im 59 yrs old and started listening to Eric when i was 15 I heard the song "Cocaine" I beleive it was 1977. But there's no telling what or where he would be by now. Bless his heart and soul he would be 70 yrs 🙏🏼of age and would he be playing at this age. Of course he would. I remember in one of the interviews he was saying who is this, Ive got find out who it is by the end of the day. And he did. Just like Eric Clapton 78 yrs old. But he is a testament of legends and I love Eric Clapton I've been playing almost all his songs. He taught me how to play his music. But I could play a little Stevie Ray. Texas flood, little sister, all his great songs except 2 songs "Mary had little lamb" and "Voodoo Child". Yeah he's my dude and I pray that he RIP 🙏🏼next to his 1959 Fender Stratocaster. Eric has been jammin his guitar since 1962 61 yrs and 9 bands most notably Yard Birds, Derrick and the Domino's, Cream, Blind Faith, The Roosters. He truly is a super star legendary musician and I don't believe there will ever be another one like him. He's played almost 3500 world wide European shows in North America Asia,South America, and Africa. The Royal Albert Hall a record 218 times since 1964 a total of 6 Guitar festivals he's had a record total of 19 Grammys more than anyone ever. He has composed 7 soundtracks for films and is the only triple time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. He has 3 songs of the year including 1992 tears in heaven. Written for his 4 year old when he tragically lost him in a 49 story fall🙏🏼. The other 2 songs of the year were I shot the sheriff and Layla. Mr guitar Clapton has networth of 500 million. He once played with with John Lennon, and Kieth Richards in 1969 it was called "Yer Blues". Told you Ive done my research. It was very very interesting and Im truly amazed and in awe learning about Mr. Clapton and Im sure there a lot more to know about him. But one thing I have to ask him if he were listening is do you ever ever get bloody fingers from playing so much guitar. He's been playing since he was 13 and and a staggering 9 bands. He is truly the only musician to play for 62 years. Alltime legend. He is the British Bomb and I truly admire you and aspire to someday play guitar along side with you.🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷🎷🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
When I was in high school this song came out and I thought to myself, "maybe being old isn't so bad after all." I'm 47 now and wish I had the amount of cool this man has in his pinkie.
My Mum and I went to four brilliant EC concerts. Now she is no longer with me but these memories will always stay with me, we had such an incredible times together.
Back in day it got a lot of airplay on MTV Europe in 1989. It was supposed to be higher in the charts worldwide, masterclass from Eric Clapton and his supporting band.
Pretending is an absolutely awesome great straight up rock n roll song by Eric Clapton and totally rocks it needs to fully cranked up all the way to full maximum volume.🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
This was the first song my husband blasted when we went back to his house. (FIRST TIME 😉). He is dying now and I listen to it over and over........We loved one another so much!!!!
Love it. I've got a few strats, their all different. The 83 comes closest just with a treble booster and crybaby. All I have is a JCM800. I think a Fender twin would do better but in the end it's all Eric Clapton. Freaking amazing tone.

This was a great song at the end of an excellent decade of music! One of my faves from Eric ( actually there are many! ). This was greatly enhanced by the backup vocals of the great Chaka Khan. In fact, a lot of the greatest hits of the decade featured Chaka Khan ( " Higher Love" by Steve Winwood, also comes to mind ). A diva, no less, in her own right. Eric's guitar is truly second to none. One of the best lyrics I've ever heard. were in this song " You never knew who you used to think you are.... How strange" Absolutely priceless! This man is pure GENIUS!
I remember being a rotorooter guy unclogging drains in the eighties and my co worker would play Clapton in the work van 🤙😎 covered with grease but rocking out to clapton the whole time Awe good times the eighties😎
You know, in the 80's us Benjamin Franklin guys didn't like you Roto-Rooter boys too much. You all were all way more punctual than we were, so we used to siphon gas out of your trucks.
I agree, I listen to him everyday at work. Put on my headphones and just jam. Lately I've been listening to him and the Eagles, good combo. And I love Derek and the Dominos, live at the Fillmore, just jams LOL. If you haven't heard them look it up, roll it over is the jam/shizzle/shit LMAO
@EricClaptonmusic that's hard. Who Do You Love, Wonderful Tonite, Pretending. Then there is all of the Cream stuff. Difficult question to answer. You're no one hit wonder.
I'm a guitar player/singer for a very long time, grew up in the second decade of rock. I sort of feel I was put on earth to do this. The more I know about Clapton, I also read his very honest book, the more respect and admiration I have for this beloved man. For someone who thinks and breathes guitar, especially the Stratocaster, I feel I can understand him and truly admire his authenticity and dedication. They say it takes 10,000 hours to get really proficient at something, he's probably put in 300,000! He's a no shit-taking kind of guy and that's just part of his integrity. Beck has left the building, and it's a very different world since when rock was young. When Clapton and Page go that difference will be even more poignant.
Went on a date in 1991. Tom's River NJ. Still remember her and this song with equal bittersweet emotion. Alas, we all find happiness in our own time and way...even if, we are Pretending.

Clapton at his Armani-loving, modelizing peak. Perfection in this video, the hair, the look, everything. Song is fantastic too - didn't know that Chaka was on backup vocals here.

Fires burning in pouring rain! Gotta love Clapton.
