I love tamiya's LP line. They spray so much nicer than acrylics. I now use lacquers any time I can. I've been ordering mine from Sunward hobbies in Canada. but stock has been low on a lot of what I need now. Racing white is an off white color. Back in the early dys race cars were painted to match their countries. Germany is white or silver, Japan was white with a red circle or sun, France was blue, italiy was red which is where all the red ferraris came from it's a spin from their racing days when the scudaria ferrari ran rosso coursa or "racing red" cars, GB was green hence the color british racing green. The "racing" colors are supposed to match the old racing colors.
Great video that shows how easy these are to use. After about 18 months of trying to airbrush various acrylic paints with mixed results I tried these. They are so easy to use and get great results. Always avoided doing car and aircraft models but using these the results have been amazing. The only downside is that some colours seem to be missing from the range especially some of the cammo colours. Rapid thinners works well too.
Tamiya paint has always been one of the best. There is a UA-cam modeler who uses the acrylics without a primer and it works great. Tamiya is that good........................................

Thanks for another great video. I just wonder whether you have concerns over lacquer paint fume which is more poisonous then the acrylic paint. I kinda hesitate keep using lacquer even I really like the performance and the choices.
I've been around lacquers and enamels my entire life of 57 years. It was the family business. We had a spray painting company. We painted parts and pieces with giant spray booths and baking ovens. I've never had any type of reaction and I guess I'm used to the fumes. Keep in mind that hobby paints are no where near as "Hot" as actual auto and industrial paints. They are way weaker and watered down versions of the industrial strength paints. Use a respirator and you'll be fine. I can't live without solvent paints. They just perform so much better the acrylics that it's not even close. The strengths outweigh the fumes or smells to me.

thanks for the great video. i've been brushing my models with acrylics but i'm new to airbrush. what would you recommend between tamiya acrylics and tamiya lacquers for airbrushing ? thanks.
Brush painting Tamiya Lacquer over Tamiya Lacquer based Liquid Surface Primer dissolves the primer even after days of drying. However, air brushing seems to be fine. Not sure if I can trust Tamiya Lacquer on top of Tamiya/Mr. Hobby Surfacer Primer. Thanks for the great tutorial.
What's the ratio of thinner to paint for Tamiya's lacquers? I saw in a comment below they use 1:1, although I know with Mr. Color's paints it's usually a 2:1 ratio.
I'm thinking about changing over to MrColor because I've been having trouble finding several Tamiya products. I'm still waiting on thinner from Hong Kong as they only had SAL mail available, and nothing available domestic.
Mr Color is a great choice, it's my favorite paint. And yes it's easier to get now than Tamiya for some reason. I have a full Mr line up and it's always been my go to paint.
Awesome review. I picked up 8 couple years. Ack off eBay. I’ve really liked them, especially the semi gloss black, tire black and gun metal. My 3 favorites. I’m waiting for Andy’s hobby hq. to get them in. Last I heard was June. Keep em comin!👍
That gun metall is the best colour to make nice rims on the cars,no wash needed and has a kind of a shadow effect in/on it. Use them a while,6 months about. And they give good results, the body,s of the cars i do 2 times a light mist coat after priming.Let it dry for 30 minutes, then i cover coat,30 minutes waiting and a wet coat. The result is stunning.
I just bought some of the Tamiya Levelling Thinner and it doesn't seem to smell as bad as the Mr Hobby one which is good..must get some of the Gloss Aluminium..i bought the Matt one a while back and it's very dull..see if Ultimate Modelling Products can send you a sample of their airbrush which is made for them by Badger for review
Hi beginner here, I plan to only do hand brushing for now but the color of paint I want to use is only available in spray can. Do you know how I can bottle it like the ones in this video?
You can use a method called decanting. You tape a short straw to the spray can nozzle and put the other end in a tupperware type of container or a jar with a lid. The hole in the lid should be the size of the straw, then seal the straw with tape. Then spray the paint into the container or jar. You can place everything in a large clear bag while you do this for extra protection. Spray enough for you to airbrush or empty the can if you wish. Be sure to store the paint in a well sealed jar. I might do a video on this soon
I feel these don't need a clear coat. You should see and feel them in person. They actually look like they are coated already and they're super durable. But you absolutely can coat them for even more protection
Great video as always. Quick question: where do you get the acrylic stand where you keep your glasses, the one right behind the Gundam? Also the acrylic drawers right next to it. Thank you very much.
I have almost the entire tamiya lacquer range and they are super easy to spray with when thinned with mr levelling thinner or mr rapid thinner for the metallics. Only problem is with small brushes the lacquer dries between wetting the brush and moving your hand to the model so you have to thin with straight laquer retarder.
My buddy who builds kits on a borderline pro level never uses primer on anything, ever. He doesn't believe in it and thinks it's a waist of time and money. And he says he's never had a problem. He does of course build them and puts them in his cabinet displays and never really touches them again, so there's that
Looking forward to yourexperiemnt with home-made thinner/cleaners, but right now, are Mr Leveling thinner ur goto for Tamiya type paints, and Ultimate AB Thinner your goto for Vallejo type paints?
Great video and paint. I love how it turned out. Why are they not sold in the US? Is it because of shipping hazardous paint from Japan? I have bought a few items for a couple of hobby shops in the UK and have never had any issues getting the product in a timely manor. Well except last summer during the peak of the Covid-19 problems.
Tamiya USA keeps promising they are "coming" but they don't bring them in. Until Tamiya USA brings them in we are stuck ordering from other countries and having to have them shipped.
Probably has to do with the formula of the paint and it probably contains a chemical that is prohibited from sale in the US. Was the same issue with Mr. Color Aqueous, until just last year or so they re-released the line with new formulation. Let's hope that with the modeling hobby picking up cause of COVID they get encouraged to release then here sooner than later.
Thanks for the videos! Any chance you could do a video comparing different primers under Mr Color paints? I just bought the Mr Surfacer 1500s and I'm not really sure how to use them. I build cars.
@@BrentWoodward I have them too. Very easy to airbrush them. You can thin them just like the paints and they go on perfect every time. Practice on a spoon like I do. Bright colors like reds go over white primers. Silvers go over gray and your darker colors go over black.

I'LL TRY TAMIYA'S LACQUER PAINTS!
Whats the ratio of thinner if ill put it straight in to the bottle itself. Should i just fill it up with thinner aswell? Like on the acrylics. Thanks
Yes, that's a good rule of thumb. They're lacquers are fairly thin so you can top off the jar like their acrylics
Much appriciated ❤
Will the Mr leveling thinner work with the tamiya surface primer (which is lacquer based)?
Yes
@barbatosrex9473 thanks, actually had my first bottle of mr leveling thinner delivered today
thanks for the great video. i've been brushing my models with acrylics but i'm new to airbrush. what would you recommend between tamiya acrylics and tamiya lacquers for airbrushing ?
Hi can you revuew lp46?
I will test it in my next airbrush review video
Where do you get your paints? I live in Massachusetts not to far from rhodeisland but don't find much at hobby lobby
Harry's Hobby Shop in Norton and Spare Time Hobby in Marlboro
What's the ratio of thinner to paint for Tamiya's lacquers? I saw in a comment below they use 1:1, although I know with Mr. Color's paints it's usually a 2:1 ratio.
How about a video on how to decant and thin spray cans paint? Rustoleum, Testors, Krylon, cheap brands etc.?
Working on it 👍
so i think it should be fine if reverse wash with tamiya enamel right???
The racing white have a warmer tone. Kinda like ivory white.
Thanks for the info buddy 👍
Oh I see you did find them. I want some!
Just FYI for anyone in the states, my local hobby town just started carrying these!
Also bought that retarder type laqcuer thinner looking forward to try it.
@@statoilbensin2190 Smells like Tamiya Extra Thin Glue...strange
can you compare this to mr color laquer paints?
These are a direct comparison to Mr Color. I would still pick Mr over these because they have more colors and where I get them they are cheaper
@@barbatosrex9473 Hey thanks for the help I'll be trying this soon. I'll watch out for your video on this as well.
here in england the uk we only can get the 10 ml size tamiya paint
Yup, and it's really annoying.
"Racing White" is Tamiya's name for the off white color used on Honda Formula 1 cars in the '60s.
Excellent video, by the way. Very informative.
hello, if you use the klean strip lacquer thinner, does it not melt the plastic?
Great video, thanks,do you add a gloss varnish to protect the lacquer paint too ?..because of the dust and finger prints when touch the paint, thanks !
I feel these don't need a clear coat. You should see and feel them in person. They actually look like they are coated already and they're super durable. But you absolutely can coat them for even more protection
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks very much !
Great video as always. Quick question: where do you get the acrylic stand where you keep your glasses, the one right behind the Gundam? Also the acrylic drawers right next to it. Thank you very much.
Here's the glasses stand , they come in a 4 pack amzn.to/3zqNP5a
I got the drawers organizer at the Container store here tinyurl.com/yauvewzy
I have almost the entire tamiya lacquer range and they are super easy to spray with when thinned with mr levelling thinner or mr rapid thinner for the metallics. Only problem is with small brushes the lacquer dries between wetting the brush and moving your hand to the model so you have to thin with straight laquer retarder.
Tamiya primer doesn't stick to Strelets, Zvezda and othe soft plastic minatures. You can peel pro\imer with your fingernail.
I love spraying LP paints. Thinned 1:1 and it lays so nice. Was it the standard 28.00 shipping from UMP?
Anyone tried these for firearms? How does paint hold up?
What are the best brushes to use with this thin paint?
I like red Sable brushes and Tamiya brand brushes are super nice too
3.3mm nozzle ??
Nice vid!!!!!!!!!!! 👍👍👍
Thank you 👌
Great video and paint.
I recently tested over 30 primer spray cans including Mr Surfacer 1500. Do you have the spray can or the jar of primer?
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks for the reply! I got the jars in white, grey and black because I'd rather airbrush the primer.
@@BrentWoodward I have them too. Very easy to airbrush them. You can thin them just like the paints and they go on perfect every time. Practice on a spoon like I do. Bright colors like reds go over white primers. Silvers go over gray and your darker colors go over black.
@@barbatosrex9473 Perfect thanks for the help! They're in the mail on the way to me, can't wait to use them. Any tips on what you would use the pink one for over the white/grey/black ones? I didn't buy the pink.
@@BrentWoodward the pink primer is primarily for red but I use white so it's a color you won't really need. I have pink but that's because I'm working on a mega primer test video.
Need your advice....currently prepping an action figure to paint. Would it work if I use a Tamiya Lacquor pearl white on top of a primer then a Tamiya Gloss White on top of that lacquer? Is it better to put the lacquer on top of the gloss white? Also, this will be using a paint brush. Thank you.
Yes you'll be fine
I bought the lacquer thinner retarder type and I am looking forward to see if it is it better than combining tamiya acrylic retarder with x20a in airbrush.
