I love how this movie introduced us to every kind of tornado. The first one in the ditch with the truck was an F1. The one in the field was a "solid F2", followed by several waterspouts. A stronger F3 hits on the hill when Jo and Bill reaffirm their love for each other. A stronger F4 hits the drive-in at night and then concluding with the massive F5 at the end.
Each twister is visually accurate if you to count from F1-F5, scientifically speaking, even though the first twister they chase physically looks like an F1, it does the damage of an F4. The F2 and following water twisters don’t do enough damage so they could really be the F1’s. The remaining 3 are all fajita scale accurate in rope size and destruction.
Melissa was honestly not a villain at all. She was probably my favorite of all the characters and her reactions to the tornadoes were totally understandable.
Who ever said she was a villain? She was just overwhelmed by the whole situation and potentially fatal consequences of chasing. Not to mention she did overhear Bill admitting that he still loved Jo. I felt that she did the right thing by breaking it off in such a peaceful and amicable manner instead of storming off.
She never was a villian. She is the result of someone shrinking their comfort zone, and then bringing someone from that realm back into their comfort zone. It's little differenct from the current ":Climate change" crisis, where the rural folk realise that they have to take the world as itr is, and the world will forever change; and city folk thinking that somehow the earth climate can be stopped in one state eternally.
Any one who thinks that any of the 3 main characters are the villain is crazy the only ones who villain is the dude in the other truck who’s so arrogant that when Bill and Jo try to warn them that they are going headfirst into the danger zone and they willingly ignore them and then even mock them before they get killed by the flying tree or whatever it was

Can I just say that looking at this scene now, that the filmmakers and editors did an AMAZING job with this scene of the approaching twister. In some tornadoes due to direction inflows and outflows of the storm, there can be a calmness in the air that you wouldn't know there's anything wrong (DEADLY wrong at that), and with it being at night makes a tornado ten times more terrifying. The fact that they gave you next to no warning that its coming and going to scrape right by them is true to life, since night time and rain-wrapped tornadoes are far more likely to kill than during the day just because of the fact you can't see them. Right before it hits, they have the effects for the lightning going off and the F4 if you can pause the video at 1:52 at just the right frame, you can see it for a split second and how close its gotten. They really did a good job with the effects on how scary an F4 at night really can be.
Not to mention if you are wearing headphones or listening through surround sound, you'll notice they added a low bellowing growl (kinda like Godzilla's low bellow growl) to add more of a horror aspect of a night time tornado. You can even hear it when they switch perspectives to Aunt Meg over her chimes.

The ENTIRE new “Twisters” movie doesn’t even come CLOSE to the ominous suspense of this scene. The musical score and sound effects in this are incredible.
Absolutely. There was no build up whatsoever…..and don’t even get me started on the acting. All the actors in Twister deserve Oscar’s compared to the new one.

On May 24, 1996, a tornado destroyed Screen No. 3 at the Can-View Drive-In, a drive-in theater in Thorold, Ontario, which was scheduled to show Twister later that evening, in a real-life parallel to a scene in the film in which a tornado destroys a drive-in during a showing of the film The Shining
Melissa playing with her ring before the storm hit, i think is really significant. Makes me think she was already considering leaving Bill. I couldnt stand her as a kid but now i understands her fully. Who wouldn't freak out in this situation?
THe scene at 3:53 with the twister destroying the screen just as the movie has a closeup of the equally unraveling Jack Torrance (Nicholson) is magnificent.
This is the greatest Twister 🌪 movie ever made and nothing will ever come close to this movie 🎬 it has that special something that just can't be Duplicated. Or remade
Loved this movie it's a shame Bill Paxton passed away he and Helen Hunt were great characters and had good chemistry as storm chasers. Seeing how quickly the tornado touched down with very little warning for everyone on the ground was terrifying when Bill Paxton said it's already here. Just goes to show how unpredictable mother nature can be. Excellent movie. The way that Jonas got killed also freaked me out with how he refused to listen to Bill when even though they may not have been friends he still tried to save his life
The CGI may look a bit dated now but, in terms of setting a high suspense buildup, they nailed it! Probably more so with this night scene than the other twisters because it was all about what you COULDN'T see. But all the clues are there, and the music, lead you to suspect hell is just around the corner...
I saw a tornado once in real life. Cut a 30 mile or so path through western Massachusetts about 14 years ago. An area not known for this sort of weather.... Sounded like a freight train going 100 mph, just like they say. Destroyed this house and that one, leaving the one in the middle almost untouched, just like a movie. Killed a few people. Just sat on the highway, stuck in traffic, watched it cross in front of us and spin through a neighborhood....pick up a whole house and just throw it like nothing.... Absolutely the scariest goddamn thing ever. I mean EVER. That said, I loved this movie in the 90s but life got a little too real that day))
not quite, this was an F4, pa was killed by an F5, but i get what you mean, her face says it all and it's like these tornadoes are playing mind games with her.
My son and I love this movie, especially when tornadoes are portrayed as sounding like roaring lions. Watch it again, every tornado sounds like an MGM movie opening.
This is the best tornado movie ever, twisters doesn't hold a candle to this one, this scene alone makes this movie amazing, nothing creepier then a night tornado especially a beast like this F4.
It got even scarier when that tornado met up with a tornado that was stronger and both teamed up to form that monster EF5 tornado that became the final twister in the movie. 🌪
In the new Twisters film they tried to replicate this scene at the rodeo, but what makes this scene so great is the slow build. It starts at 0:43 and comes to a head with the sirens at 2:22. That minute and a half feels like 5 with how good of a job they do at pulling you into the scene as the chaos unfolds. In Twisters (2024) it felt a lot faster. Weather alert on the phone, people evacuate the rodeo in seconds, and then the tornado is there. Jan DeBont did a masterful job at playing up this scene.
The TV going to snow probably doesn't happen any more. The analog TVs could pick up the electrical output from lightning and tornadoes. There was a trick I dimly remember where you could turn to one of the low band channels ( 2 to 6) and then use the fine tuning control to zero in on the correct frequency. The TV would flash with lightning strokes, and if a tornado was close enough it would be a steady snow.
We were hit by a tornado when I was 7 years old, we had just gotten off the school bus, this is pretty accurate, the house stood afterwards, but it wasn't safe, it was like being hit by a freight train, and deafening, I'm afraid of strong winds to this day, that siren goes off. I'm in the basement almost 60 years later. From Iowa
I saw this in the theater with my Sister, her ex-husband, and my niece....it was the first time the new Carmike opened, now it's gone due to a hurricane.....Dad gave me the money to go since I was unemployed an BROKE.....love and miss you, Dad!
When a tornado is coming at you, its the most helpless feeling in the world. One touched down bn our house and our neighbor and the sound was deafening. I was about 14 when it happened & wont 4get it ever.
Was caught in a tornado this week, came out of nowhere, never again do I want to go through that. It was a ef1 but still. Never had a tornado in canastota new york. Same storm spawned an ef2 almost ef3 not even 30 miles away.
Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t understand the debris from a tornado is more likely to kill you than the funnel itself. And you are correct, once one structure gets swept away, it acts as a projectile to damage the next structure and the domino effect continues.
These types of tornadoes in the night are called "Nocturnal Tornadoes" and these types of tornadoes are actually deadlier than the destruction they cause in daylight.
I know this movie came out in 96 but I saw this as a kid on the tv in 2008 and it became one of my favorite movies but at the same time raised my fear for tornadoes Also I always saw the tornadoes as the main villains of the movie, these giant wind monsters that were after the storm chasers😂
Am I the only one that notices the hand popping up at 2:37 and tapping the metal plate behind it? Seems to me like an error of someone testing if it was sturdy enough because it feels so out of place hahah.
Helen Hunt was so adorable in this film. When I first saw a Tornado in person it was closer to me than it is to her in daylight.. 2:44 I did the exact same thing as she did here. I was so captivated by the power of the tornado I took a few steps forwards watching the tornado after I warned everyone in the buildings to take shelter in the center stairwell

The perfect cameo appearance where Jack Nicholson was close to saying, "Here's Johnny!" Part where the twister destroyed the screen.
Heres Twisty!
😂
F4: Twisty is coming to get you Bill 😈
this whole scene was done so well. the way the cable cuts off..just the wind blowing then bill and jo looking at the tv and the way melissa looks at the windown and it just keeps building and building...then all hell breaks loose...so freaking good...oh and the music...the music is so good.
I don't care what Hollywood CGI can come up with now--nothing scared me more back in the day than the toronado scene in Wizard Of Oz 😂
yep!
a sock if I remember correctly
The second wizard of Oz was dark right?
Damn
That tornado was done entirely with practical effects, too.
You know, you might be right.
This is my fav scene in Twister. Cant wait for Twisters
Mine too!!!
Me too. I can't wait to see what happens in Twisters
The ENTIRE new “Twisters” movie doesn’t even come CLOSE to the ominous suspense of this scene. The musical score and sound effects in this are incredible.
Saw it in the theater..so good❤
Absolutely. There was no build up whatsoever…..and don’t even get me started on the acting. All the actors in Twister deserve Oscar’s compared to the new one.
Exactly!!! I was so frustrated when I saw it it was pure spectacle
Agree to disagree the visuals on the new one made it much more threatening imo
Twister only needed one movie and it was done just fine.
Same goes for sinister
This scene traumatized me as a kid the shining playing while the tornado was ripping through everything was too much for me
3:54 F4 Tornado: Here’s Twisty! 😈🌪️
No no no no the f4 tornado:here's Johnny
Best scene 🤣
F4: Here's Johnny! 😈
❤
This always felt like this is where the fun stops chasing the 🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️
The tornado hits the movie screen right as Jack Nicholson says "here's Johnny". Don't think for a moment that wasn't intentional.
The build-up in this is so great. Love this scene.
Love this scene!! 2:36 is such a terrifying shot of the twister, especially when the lightning illuminates it so the funnel is half-lit, half-dark!! It just adds to the suspense and feeling of imminent danger!
Twister is, and always will be, the #1 storm-disaster movie for me!! 😎⚡️🌪️👍🏻
U ain’t lyin
Twister was the first DVD my mom ever bought us. And it was my favorite movie ever since.
The way they shot this scene, the subtleties building in a grand crescendo. Like the wind, starting off as just a breeze to a hell storm signaling its approach. Gives this Tornado a personality like that of an angry god.
Finger of God
@@Truth72500Except the Finger of God in this movie is that they're referring to the F5 that took her father's life. And it doesn't matter if it's the same one in the present day. Jo will have to face it head-on if she's able to get closure.
Saw this in theaters 10x it was amazing seeing on a big screen before multiplex took over. Still love watching it's so well put together, no way this new one tops it
I saw it in Theater back then ... What a rollercoaster ride was that
What a great movie! And I originally saw it when it first came out at a drive-in at Columbia PA. Wish that place was still there.
''HERE'S JOHNNY!'' . .Tornado ''HERE, HOLD MY BEER''.
😂😂😂😂😂
3:53 "HERE'S TWISTY!"
I absolutely love this movie and I'm so stoked about Twisters
Great movie. RIP Bill. You were in my favorite movie of all time "Tombstone". Helen Hunt & Bill's passion is perfect.
Wow.....that's surreal
4:00 "EVERYBODY MOVE, CMON!!!"
"Dude, we're already down here" 😅
80s knew how to come up with ideas. 90s knew how to come up with a scene.
This movie is like Jurassic Park but with tornadoes.
Well, both movies are written by Michael Crichton.
Melissa playing with her ring before the storm hit, i think is really significant. Makes me think she was already considering leaving Bill.
I couldnt stand her as a kid but now i understands her fully. Who wouldn't freak out in this situation?
2:37 Jesus that thing is terrifying
And just think, it’s not the final one.
Jesus ain’t got nothing to do with it.
Terrifying but beautiful in its own scary way

Who’s here in 2024 right before Twisters 28 years later???????
I’ve watched this movie countless times, but this is the first time I’m realizing Judy Garland. I’m guessing this is an Easter egg
Best movie EVER made!!!!!!!
THe scene at 3:53 with the twister destroying the screen just as the movie has a closeup of the equally unraveling Jack Torrance (Nicholson) is magnificent.
Can't wait for the new twisters hopefully it can be a good as this movie
I saw the preview and wasn't really sure. It looked like Alot was AI generated. Really loved the sound track to the new movie though.
Looks to AI generated I think
I really hope we see a cameo from one of the actors rom the original
It's Hollywood, there is a good chance they will find a way to screw it up.
There are about 100000 cinema sins against this flick, but I still love it.
Very very good film. Always reminds me of experiencing supercell thunderstorms abroad.
This is the greatest Twister 🌪 movie ever made and nothing will ever come close to this movie 🎬 it has that special something that just can't be Duplicated. Or remade
I always loved how the tornado hits the screen when the HERE'S JOHNNY scene plays on the screen
The way that Jonas got killed also freaked me out with how he refused to listen to Bill when even though they may not have been friends he still tried to save his life
When the lightning came, i felt that....
I was about 1 year old wen I first saw this movie and im 27 and this scene still scares the crap out of me
How can you even remember watching it when you were just 1 year old? 😅
Cause it came out in 1996 an I first watched it in 1998
Doesn’t make sense lol 😂 you didn’t remember this at 1 years old come on.
@@MrAjking808 yes I do
@@MrAjking808 I have good memory
The CGI may look a bit dated now but, in terms of setting a high suspense buildup, they nailed it! Probably more so with this night scene than the other twisters because it was all about what you COULDN'T see. But all the clues are there, and the music, lead you to suspect hell is just around the corner...
The new one coming out this summer will never be able to replicate the tension, suspense, and horror from this one scene alone.
You have no way of knowing this.
@@yolandaponkers1581only time will tell if the new movie will hold a candle 🕯️ to the original movie 🍿🎥 3:39
We shall see!
I would like another steak breakfast...
Hopefully they will try as hard!
That said, I loved this movie in the 90s but life got a little too real that day))
Jo at 2:45: that's the bastard that killed my Pa.
not quite, this was an F4, pa was killed by an F5, but i get what you mean, her face says it all and it's like these tornadoes are playing mind games with her.
Don't get me wrong, I liked the new Twisters movie. But nothing will ever beat how iconic, nostalgic, and honestly terrifying this scene is for me.
It got even scarier when that tornado met up with a tornado that was stronger and both teamed up to form that monster EF5 tornado that became the final twister in the movie. 🌪
Between the New One and This I’d say They are Both My Favorite…..But This is The One I’ll Always Remember And Love ❤🌪️🌪️🌪️
This is my favorite scene in the whole movie.
Bill Paxton was an incredible actor. Grew up watching movies with him In them. Wish he was still around playing in movies.
“It’s already here. 😨”
There are cats and ninjas that aren’t that stealthy!
1996 or not, the effects done in this movie were great.
When a tornado is coming at you, its the most helpless feeling in the world.
One touched down bn our house and our neighbor and the sound was deafening. I was about 14 when it happened & wont 4get it ever.
When a TV goes static, that means there's gonna be a twister.
Was caught in a tornado this week, came out of nowhere, never again do I want to go through that. It was a ef1 but still. Never had a tornado in canastota new york. Same storm spawned an ef2 almost ef3 not even 30 miles away.
In a Tornado things get picked up and blown. They don't start just falling like in an earthquake. And it's gone in a minute.
Great shot of the twister and Jack Nicholson.
I know this movie came out in 96 but I saw this as a kid on the tv in 2008 and it became one of my favorite movies but at the same time raised my fear for tornadoes
Also I always saw the tornadoes as the main villains of the movie, these giant wind monsters that were after the storm chasers😂
This was the scene used in the Universal Studios attraction Twister.
Wow! This still works in 2024! How is that possible considering how different the vfx are?
They actually made things with love back then
If Twister is getting a sequel, I want a sequel to The Day After Tomorrow!!!!
What, "Week after tomorrow"?
Am I the only one that notices the hand popping up at 2:37 and tapping the metal plate behind it? Seems to me like an error of someone testing if it was sturdy enough because it feels so out of place hahah.
That’s part of the movie that’s playing at the drive-in..
@@robertr798I feel incredibly stupid now, you're right lmao!
Helen Hunt was so adorable in this film. When I first saw a Tornado in person it was closer to me than it is to her in daylight.. 2:44
I did the exact same thing as she did here. I was so captivated by the power of the tornado I took a few steps forwards watching the tornado after I warned everyone in the buildings to take shelter in the center stairwell
I saw the movie when it came in theaters. Great acting, great story and I said to myself, it’s just a movie. Then I saw the devastation at Joplin!!!!😮
Yea. The scene where they went to Wakita after the F4 hit was a lot like Joplin: they had like no warning. Though Joplin was an EF-5.
The power grid for that town must be insane to survive a hit from an F4 and barely start flickering after the storm was leaving.
Probably switched to a secondary line
What's with the muppet sound effects at 4:49?
That can be scary when a tornado is hitting in the middle of the night.
Southern
It totally is. It's hard enough to see them at night. When it's rain wrapped, it's almost impossible.
This is the scene that got me in to THE SHINING as a kid!
Man the galaxy drive neon sign being torn off from the tornado and crashing into the on the roof of the storage unit at 5:43 is fucking terrifying
Seeing the (Drive In) scene makes me want to go to Universal Studios Florida and experience. “Twister: Ride it Out” i miss that ride 🌪️😔😢
