That was so fun! Thank you For sharing your gift with us. I am in my early 70's and I just started painting for the first time last June. If it wasn't for you UA-cam teachers I think I would have lost my mind during this pandemic . You are a godsend.
Totally agree. 70 yr newbie here too.
I am happy to also belong to the wonderful group of young ladies, 73 here in California. Also started a few months ago, Ellen is my guiding light!.❤
I'm 73 and never picked up a paint brush that I can remember until about 3 years ago. I love watercolor!
Lol…76 on ten acres in Iowa…Ellen keeps me going back for more…nice to meet you all…a bit of a club💕
I agree with you. I’m a retired interior designer almost 75 and have just decided to really get into watercolour. I’m having fun, and you? 25:53
Flat brushes are so underrated in watercolor. Everyone is all about the rounds, as expensive as possible lol. Flats have so much more variety in each stroke with the flat edge and sharp corners, you get those organic random shapes... and do it so much easier. They don't have to be fancy either, just plain old decent quality synthetics. It's not just florals.. everything is easier.. water, buildings, bushes and trees, ground and rocks, skies.. flat brush skies basically paint themselves.
Awesome! Newbie here. Thanks for the encouragement!
I love all your videos. I just started watercolors at age 90. You have given me a new lease on life. Thank you
I very much enjoy your relaxed style both in your technique and your voice. So relaxing. I learn so much from you Ellen.
Yes! Love your painting play time ! Whish, Whish!
Wow - I feel ya! You are definitely speaking to me :) Great tutorial and awesome piece. At 75, I'm even older than Marie and just started 2 months ago - but it just goes to show ya - We're never too old to keep learning and having fun with loose watercolors thanks to great artists/teachers like you. Thanks Ellen - I'm so glad I found you. Joyce
I love how loose and free you are…when I grow up-I want to paint like you-lol 😊
Always love floral Friday and the sound effects! Great video! Can't wait to try this. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
I really enjoy all your art and techniques!
"Unexpected happiness" I love that.
I Love this!
Thanks for sharing your talent.
QUESTION: when you add new layers, are you waiting until the previous layer is fully dry? I’ve been struggling with adding layers onto florals…..then you do this video..great timing, thank you!!
Hi Jill. I’m not Ellen, but I’ll share with you my results. I’ve tried both ways i.e., letting layers dry and adding more water and paint, and adding water and more paint right away after initial watercolor is painted on. I’ve definitely had much better results with the latter. What happens as a layer dries is the paint adheres to the paper and becomes much less moveable as it soaks in. Going in immediately with water and more paint while the paint is slightly dry allows the paint to move, which is the fun of it. When you go in to your piece (after you have the basic design down) with a clean, wet brush it gets the paint wet again and you can smoosh it around better. You never know what you’ll get, which is what I find so delightful. Also, experiment with different concentrations of water and paint and you’ll see something amazing happen. I have a couple of bookmarks I painted over on IG if you want to have a look @rmuller366. Blessings to you!
If you want smooth edges out then you do not want to let your edges dry and that is very simplistic answer to a complex question. But, a critical key to not muddying up your painting is to let your painting dry before adding other colors. So the answer is both yes and no. I love Ellen but there is another watercolorist on UTube who has excellent tutorials is Karen Rice. I’ve learned so much from both these fantastic artists. She can explain how and when to dry and when not. Good luck on your journey and blessings.
Love the colors, and sound effects! Lol
Magnifique ! Merci pour ce partage! 🤩🥰💐
Your my favourite go to artist to watch, you really inspire me Ellen thank you
Какая красота!!!Какие яркие цветы!!Вы замечательный художник!!Спасибо за отличное весеннее настроение!
You created a flower scene that glows & you had fun doing it! Loved your commentary & encouragement to be loose & have fun! Thanks Ellen
I love everything about this..it changes constantly and looks good along the way too. Stop where you want , go farther if you want...just play ! I love watching you just expressing joy. It is such a joy to watch you.♥️♥️
I really like your channel, love the practical instruction. Your technique is earthy and your teaching is for average people. Really like what you said about having fun and not worrying about mistakes. Reminds me of good ole Bob and his perspective. I appreciate your showing the wrist movement. Twisting the brush, adding and take away, add some more. Super!
This is so awesome !! Love this technique ❣️
Love your carefree no stress way of painting!
What I like more with you Ellen is that you explain how yo mix colours.
I can do it only while watching you.
fabulous tutorial thanks
i need to try this! love it so much!!!!!💞🥰💞🥰💞🥰💞🥰
I really like your flowers!
Love this and think your painting was beautiful.
This is great…the blurry edges add a lot of character to the composition & it has so much depth
thanks!
Every time I watch you do this technique Ellen, I want to run to my painting desk and bang one out. This technique is so much fun to do, I love it! Blessings to you and your tribe of viewers.
You're so right. All it takes is one video of hers and I'm already taking my paints out lol
This is gore-ge-ous!. Thanks for sharing. Most tutorials that I'm able to find for loose florals it just shows how to do 1 or 2 flowers together not a whole bouquet so this is super helpful. Have a great day!
I love to watch you paint and hear your comments. You make me smile.
thanks!
How fun!
Love your painting! Just learning to Watercolor
I am, also, 70. I use to grab books of instruction. But, you tubes are a godsend.
Thank you Ellen!! I never saw someone paint the way you do!! THANK YOU!!
Definitely fun and free with the larger flat brush, love it! And it really turns out so beautiful! Great tips, I will be doing some more of these, thanks to you!
Yay! Thank you!
What a fun video. I love how you don’t stress over accidents. You either go with them as a happy accidents or demo several different ways to deal with the "accidents " and just have fun fun fun! Definitely going to try the big flat brush! I love the looseness and the vibrant colours.
yes flat brushes are fun!
Love the lavenders and how they curve. Thanks for your amazing painting content here Ellen! I just started my own youtube channel and your relaxed style is a huge inspiration to me.
Thanks! So relaxing to watch, so much fun to try (while no one is watching!)
Lovely!
I love this! Also, your giggle makes me giggle. Fun all around. I need to stop buying supplies and just let myself paint and have fun.
Love it Ellen
love the little blue flowers you added at end.
Absolutely gorgeous painting. Never thought a flat big brush can be so useful.
I totally live your tutorial , the energy and sound effects were so funny and inspiring! ❤. I know this sounds crazy, but I wish you or someone else would show how to tape the paper down, what type of tape that won’t rip the paper when removing, or what you used to hang up the cardboard so you are able to stand while painting. I hope to hear back from you as I really enjoyed your video.
Fun…fun….fun Friday! Love this
thanks!
I LOVE the sound effects!!! Made my day. And thank you for this video because it highlighted I've been way over thinking strokes for basic loose flowers.
I just love watching you paint like this! Sometimes I forget to have fun and when you paint like this, I find it so inspiring. Thank you for the reminder to have fun!!!😁
"Doot-doot-doot😀 Come on it's easy!" You're speaking my language. Can't wait to try this!!
Oh my gosh this is so beautiful. I really want to try this. I hope I can do it.
I've done 2 about that size and one small so thanks for showing your loose technique. Play... have fun...I hear don't try so hard. Thank you for a full tutorial.
Thank you so much! After doing botanical painting, I've wanted to get looser, but I still get uptight. It was a big help to see you work and not worry!!!
One of my faves! Watched again this a. m. I just finished doing a couple of paintings for my first Great-grandson, and I’m so ready to get loose! I like how you go back into a semi wet work and give it a less realistic, more misty? look. Thx so much Ellen!
Enjoyed this video!
What an absolutely great way to start the day! Love your fun teaching style. Thank you for sharing your talent!

I love your voice & whimsy. I love your painting style. I'm not sold on your palette -- not the colors, but the palette itself. But, your result speaks for itself, so I should just shut up! :) Thank you, very much, for sharing your gift with us.
The sound effects makes it 🥰‼️
Love it when you’re enjoying yourself and inspiring me to play too! Great help when you exaggerate the movements. Terrific!

Thanks Ellen for this video demonstrating colour mixing ahead of time, use of a flat brush for expressiveness and the ways to enhance the values. I look forward to hearing more about your online course!
Glad it was helpful!
I wouldn’t have thought to blur the edges… it makes me think of photos taken in portrait mode. I’ve got to at least attempt this. Absolutely beautiful Ms Ellen!
Fun stuff!!
Fabulous, fun and beautiful! Thank you

I really enjoyed this! Fun, colorful, and I love the technique w the flat brush. Who knew!? A great option for a chilly, grayish Spring day. Thanks!
So cool. I love to watch you paint.
Thank you for this tutorial! I really love how you spread the colours out from the original flowers - made such a huge difference to the final resault, so perfect, adore it!
I love Holbein paint. So bright and pretty. Fun tutorial. Thanks Ellen.
LOVE floral Fridays! Thank you Ellen and deeply appreciate your sound effects. : ) Gorgeous painting- will definitely try this.
Ellen, thank you so much for this video. I'm new to painting and am getting very frustrated. Excited to try these tips and techniques.
Very pretty! I wouldn't have thought to use a wide brush to create petals. I really like that they are not perfectly round. I will have to give it a go. Thanks for the tip Ellen!
