This is a wonderful tutorial. You speak clearly and with calm. There is a gentle smile in your voice. Your Fall color palette is stunning. Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks. The lower left leaf is from an oak tree. Thank you for sharing!!!
"I’m blown away by how effortless you make this watercolor trick look! The delicate veins and the blending of fall colors are just perfect. I never thought about using the brush handle like that before, but it adds such a natural touch. This is going to elevate my paintings for sure!"
I had a teacher that showed me to use a small crotchet hook to put veins in flowers! I like this even better. I don’t have to go look for the implement, its right there with me. Also I very much like and appreciate your explanation of how the color follows the groove! Thank you for this 😊
Hey Kristin loved the fall leaf painting and the shadow really looks so great on them. Makes them pop instead of being so flat. The second leaf you painted with the round edges is an oak leaf. The last one you painted. All so beautiful thank you for sharing. Here in uk the fall colours are looking really good. Enjoy your day 🙌
I loved this video, the colors you painted the leaves is stunning! And I love your little trick~I am going to try my hand at painting a fall leaves painting this afternoon. I hope my turns out as pretty as yours. I haven't painted in quit a long while. By the way, the leaf that you sketched that you loved so much, is an Oak tree leaf. To be more specific, as there are around 600 known species of Oak trees worldwide, with about 90 known species that grow in North America, the leave you sketched is a Swamp White Oak leaf. Although there are several other species of Oaks that also have rounded lobed leaves, such as, White Oak, Bur Oak, Oregon White Oak, Post Oak, and Chestnut Oak, just to name a few. In fact, all White Oaks have rounded lobes, and all red Oaks have pointed lobes. This trait (pointed or rounded lobes) distinguishes which of the two types of Oaks you may be looking at. Which is helpful when trying to identify a specific species, as it eliminates half of the possibilities. But the Swamp Oak is the only White Oak that I know of, that grows in the U.S., that has asymmetrical lobes. While there are a few oaks with leaves that do not have lobes, all of the leaves are generally symmetrical around a clear median line. That is why I am pretty certain the leaf you sketched and painted, is a Swamp Oak leaf.
I am loving watching your painting leaves video! It’s fall here in Michigan and we have all the trees represented by your leaves. It is a breath taking time of year (which lasts only a couple of weeks of prime color! Then every leaf drops off and things are stark branches waiting for snow! Then a different beauty begins to enjoy painting. Thanks for the great tip too!
Thank you Kristin -- I have never learned that trick before -- so thank you! And thank you for demonstrating your elegant color blending style, it's so beautiful.
This is a great video! I’m so glad UA-cam showed this to me! I want to get in to watercoloring but have yet to really get going on it. There are so many things I love about this video- your limited color selection, Your voice & teaching style, and for sure your trick with the thin lines! I feel I would have the same problem of trying to do details like that! Thank you for all of this! This is gorgeous!
Loved this! I live in new England and these leaves are in my backyard with their autumn colors. A variety of maples, oaks and birches. Perfect for beautiful watercolors!
This is one of the best fall leaves tutorials I've seen. Thank you! I've used the end of the brush technique, and it is also one of my favorites. It also works really well on flower petals to define the direction of movement.
I'm watching this for the second time and getting even more out of it. Enjoyed it again. I've made this palette with 3 different brands. It's quite fun. Love these colors together. ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊 Karen from Canada
Thank you ! What a fun inspiring watercolour video. Im going to try this today. I live in Alberta, Canada and Fall is here. We have an abundance of beautiful coloured leaves for me to reference from. Thanks again!
Hi! Pretty piece😃 Naming the leaves in the order you first painted them: 1. Maple 2. Bradford Pear or Elm 3. Horse Chestnut 4. Sycamore 5. Oak Hope that helps! 😃
Looking forward to doing this project. I am in Vermont & have been collecting lots of 🍂🍁I'm not good at drawing symmetry so I'm going to trace the leaves. 😊
Thank you for this tutorial. I don't use watercolour, I use coloured pencils in adult colouring books and am currently colouring an Autumnal page in Maria Trolle Twilight Garden. I have used your inspiration above to colour in an oak leaf, I love the magenta edging. I am really happy with it and will probably try to recreate another of your leaf ideas on the page.
Kristin, excellent tutorial! I can’t draw like you but I have some large fall leaf stamps that I’m going to stamp, fussy-up, and trace them with a pencil. I will divinely try this technique! From a fellow-Arizonan! 😊🌵🐾
I think the one you did not know, might have been an oak tree. I have first hand experience - knee deep in leaves in windy Scotland! Beautiful gift you have!

This trick is good for grassy areas in landscapes, and hair details.
The details of the veins in the leaves and the shadows really bring these to a different level. Thanks for the great tips!
