Gouache Rocks! It makes it so much easier than having to mask like daisies flowers in a dark background you can just paint on the daisies are the lighter color flowers without having to go through all that masking process gouache is amazing I just love the actual depth of the color it's just amazing and so much fun to work with❤
I cannot tell you how inspirational this video was, thank you for demystifying the process, it was lovely.
This year I am going to become a member and get to the next level. You have been so instrumental & inspirational helping me find my style. Thank you so much!
I bought some gouache colours some weeks ago to celebrate that I passed my law exam. This is something I really enjoyed, and even if watercolour has been my go to, I have now found a new love (, the only struggle I had was making the brush strokes, because my kitten thought the brushes were her new play things). / Scandinavian
Congratulations for passing the exam!
You make this look so easy. I’ve watched other videos on gouache, but this is the best for newbies to gouache.
Congrats on passing the bar. Thats very hard to do! Your family must be very proud.

❤ i haven't used gouache before but i have done acrylic painting. Having fun with watercolor and now , this. I like this and im excited to use it . Beautiful ❤️ Thank you Ellen 😊
I've shifted from acrylic to watercolor too. I'll do both but watercolor has its own beauty too, ya know?
I absolutely love gouache and feel that it is so underrated. Thanks for your enthusiasm! I’m hoping for more of your gouache tutorials.
Your intuition is what makes your taps work. Mine are cute, but not the same. I enjoyed watching and learning.
Stunning. I just got gouache and this is the exact kind of thing I dream of painting. Would love more tutorials with it.
More to come!
@@ellencrimitrent I’m so excited
@@ellencrimitrent I can do lots of lines, but have trouble painting loose leaves. I tried to paint an apple tree and painting each leaf took forever! Could you consider a tutorial on how to suggest shapes/ or a technique that means you don't have to do that, I guess a more illustrative style? 🙏 I also have trouble with leaf shapes and petal shapes, although your sunflowers tutorial was awesome in that sense.
I love gouache. It's buttery and I love painting with it so much more than watercolor. I've gotten very frustrated with watercolor but have produced some beautiful art with gouache. 💙
Thank you for this video. I love painting with gouache. I love saying the word. I do use other mediums for convenience and effect. I like using chalk pastels with alcohol to create soft backgrounds without loading the surface. Same with watercolor. Gouache over granulating watercolors! 😘
I’ve been playing with gouache for a couple of months and I love it and sometimes when I mess up my watercolour I add gouache to fix the mistakes😀 I’ve only been painting for four months and I’m just getting confident and experimenting but I’m so excited for gouache 😀 love your vlogs I’m learning lots 👍
Thanks for sharing!!
Love your painting its so pretty just started with gouache always been a watercolour girl . But will definately try paintings this thank you x
When I was at Art College late 60’s early 70’s we used Gouache all the time for our designs and I loved it’s covering up strengths. Pleased to see you using it again in your tutorials encouraging more people to try the possibilities.
Your enthusiasm is so contagious 🎉❤
I began with a gouache tin with cakes and fell for gouache! And companies stopped selling the tins and the cakes, 5 or 6 years ago; just recently I discovered you🙂Thank you! Now I understand Gouache & And What you have taught me has spurred me on to continue …..and use it as I want! As a watercolor, AND as embellishments! Love all your videos!! Keep it up, and I will too! With great affection,
Susan in 😮 Hot Phoenix
I love gouache- I paint it almost exclusively after doing about 10 years of watercolor! Thanks for this super restful tutorial! Love your channel!
This reminds me of the fields of wild flowers we see growing here in the UK. Beautiful. Thank you for a great tutorial.
I am new to watercolor and was watching several artists using gouache and bought some.
I love it how it layers on like acrylic but that you can water it down like watercolor.
I have been looking for some gauche videos. I just got out of the ER with COVID and am watching your videos to relax. Thank you!
I hope you do more videos using gouache. I struggle to find finished paintings using gouache . It would be interesting to see art in this medium at museums.
I love it! Can't wait to try it.❤
Thanks Ellen! You’re helping me change my mind about gouache. Appreciate you! Blessings to you and everyone in the world!
I love the multi floral piece you did on the dark blue background. It’s really beautiful.I am seriously contemplating getting some gouache ,before trying acrylics. These seem like a lot of fun to use and I do like the way you can just lay light or dark onto the previous colour.Thank you for showing how easy it is without all the science 🥰
its the best!
I totally agree! Gouache is so immediate and flexible, rewettable - and the list goes on and on. Holbein is my favorite brand and never looks chalky, just a wonderful product. I can't use m. graham in my area as it goes to mold way too easily in the tropics. I love love love your art! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passions!
Ok, Ellen, you convinced me! My body needs a break from gardening, so I’ll bust out the gouache this weekend. Thank you! Your little flowers are beautiful!!
bust it out!
Just so beautiful ! I love it so much !
I’m dazed and intrigued! That. Is. So. Gorgeous! Thanks for this, and for so many other inspiration(s)! 🤩
Wow! Love this
I love this! Stunning!!⚘
I love how deep and brilliant the colors of gouache can be. The versatility of gouache makes it really fun to play with!
This is so awesome !
I’ve just started watercolor painting this past winter. Really taken me awhile to get use to it because I’ve always painted in acrylic & oil .
I’ve fell in love with it !
I was so excited to see a tutorial about Gauche !!
I know I’d love this !!
Thank you so much for sharing this . Thanks so much from Tennessee ❣️
Just started goache...I love it too...Thank you for this
I'm new to art, so I've been trying lots of materials, and gouache is possibly my favourite so far. Very versatile, as you say, and combined with watercolour, even more so.
Can’t wait to try it!
Ah love watching your videos and listening to u speak, so relaxing 😁
I like gouache! Would love to see more tutorials in this medium, especially for acheiving gradients. I'd like to know how illustrators used to manage those delicate oil-like gradients in places like women's cheeks and skies.
more to come!
A values scale is useful, one can make them, or download them, or buy them for a few dollars. About 10 shades would be good. When painting that can be too many for certain tasks, but it is great for studies.
With black and white paint, learn to match all the shades. Then get some good subjects in black and white and do studies. In art schools people will often spend months to several years using black and white before they are ever let loose on colors. Few people who are painting for fun will want to do that for fun, unless charcoal is their medium. But even a little work of the sort is very valuable.
Those delicate gradients you refer to are difficult. One instructor referred to them as the most difficult and something he would bring out in second and third year classes. Prior to that one has to work in B&W in his system, or easier color exercises.
One may wish to switch from watercolor paper, which is certainly used with gouache, to illustration board which is the support that the illustrators you refer to may have more commonly used.
Gouache does darken when it dries, maybe a full value, so that is something one can learn from exercises.
Love, love love this one. Thank your.
I love watching you painting the gouache i purchased it because you paint so well with it. Thumbs up love it too.
Thank you! Cheers!
I love your videos! You make making art look so easy! I've been watching your videos for 6 years and this is the first time I've actually seen you in the video! What a treat! Now I can finally put a face with your voice! Yay! Thank you for helping all of us learn to make beautiful art!
Brava Ellen. 😍
thanks
LOVE this illustration!!! Thanks for highlighting gouache! I am really liking it! It feels natural coming from acrylics and feels a little easier than watercolors. Definitely would love more tutorials!
Oh my goodness 🥰 So simply beautiful! I bought a box of Himi guache and now I'm tempted to put my brush to work. You made it so simple and beautiful. Thank you for teaching your way of laying this medium. 🥰
I’ve been using oil paints and acrylics for years but why I haven’t used gouache beats me. I am just learning to use gouache and it’s challenging but it’s versatility is really fantastic. Really enjoyed your video , thank you.
First off I love your tutorials! I have been relearning how to use watercolors, since it had been 30 yrs since I had done any. I recently bought a set of gouache paints and thought I should learn a little more before I start. It has been 30 plus years since I used gouache in art school, but only used it in composition class. I am looking forward to painting with them and appreciate this video so much! Thank you for spending your time to help teach other artists!
Thank you! I love gouache in my sketchbooks. I’ll try this. Always love your tutorials!
This is awesome! You sold me on gouache! Thanks for the great lesson.
Great to hear!
Beautiful! Thanks !
I've painted with acrylics and watercolours. I'll invest in some gouache at some point too.
I loved your painting especially the indigo background and the doodad flowers! ;-)
thank you
Thanks Ellen! I have been playing with Acrylic since COVID lock down. I can paint! well kinda 🤭 I love watercolor, so recently been trying my hand at that. So much out there! It's been hard for me to get on board with loose and abstract (I'm trying!) Just bought Gouache and well well, seems like a happy medium! (Pun intended) Thanks for your tutorials. You do an awesome job, and keep it chill.
I tried Gouaches while on Holliday and yep it’s a very interesting and fast drawing medium specially if working out side plain air painting situation it’s ideal. Thanks for the tutorial it’s great to learn from someone who’s been working with it.
Yes I love it as well would love to see more videos on gouache. 🤗
Will do!!
Thank you for this tutorial, I've been drawn to guache, and now you have convinced me to try it!
Hope you enjoy it!
Absolutely lovely, have had gouache in studio for years, never used it, just looked at it, now I think it’s time to look at it in a new way, thank you for an excellent tutorial, very informative, so clear to understand, have liked and subscribed, thank you Mike UK
Go for it!
Agreed and I'm the same, I have some just used the white for a waterfall once!
you introduced me to gouache awhile ago, so i didn't thiink i needed this video. i finally watched it and learned so much. Thanks again
I just saw your channel today and I’m so happy I did. I bought gouache a couple of years ago when I was just starting out in watercolor. But I lacked the knowledge of how to use it and did not have much luck. I gave up and set it aside. With your instruction I’m really excited about trying it again. Thanks so much.
Interested in trying this and using my gouache more …thank you for the demo!
I loved this simple tutorial on how to use gouache. I recently bought my first gouache paints and though I did paint one picture, I have bent a bit reluctant to use my gouache paints. This video has given me a easy and simple way to get use to painting with gouache without the concern of lacking the technical skills to achieve a nice painting. Thank you, this was so helpful.
You've made me want to try these out, now - thank you!
. I have never used gouache paint but it will be my next purchase. I didn't know it came in colors.Have only seen white used to highlights. Thanks for all your tutorials. I learn a lot from you.
Who doesn’t like gouache?
This is beautiful!
This is really good information about gouache and how to use it! Love these wild 💐!
Thank you so much!
Gouche has saved many of my paintings...you are soooo right!
Love this!
I simply love this one gouache is something I haven't tried but certainly intend to now thank you.
I have never liked most stuff I have seen with Gouache; however, what you just did is beautiful! I have been inspired to try it.
yay
This is gorgeous, I ordered some gouache today! Thank you for sharing your talent
Great video! I agree, that gouache is so underrated. I love how it's drying fast, but also rewets easily, so is reworkable if needed. It's my second favourite medium right now. :)
Yesterday I bought a basic gouache set and now this video gives me a great way to experiment with the paint! Woohoo!
Gouache is my favorite medium! Thank you for the video!
I think it is just great, I had no idea. Thank you.
You inspire me! Thank you for all of the instruction and encouragement!
I love this! I recently used gauche in a painting. Don't know why it's not used much but your beautiful tutorial inspired me to do it again. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
I’d love more gouache videos!
I love your painting. Very beautiful❤
Gorgeous! I love how you keep saying “play around”. That’s something I really need to learn to do. Thanks for sharing this tutorial!
Thanks for explaining about painting with guache and expanding my horizons!
you're welcome!
Your tutorial is so good. I have gouache but didn't really understand how to use it, now I will try again. Thank you
Just got whole set on sale! So moving this week back to my old house on water - Pacific Ocean inland sea. Can’t wait to get studio set up. Thanks for this beautiful tutorial!
Sounds great!
Oh, the humidity will be great for all your gouache and watercolor pieces! I have to wait and watch for the humidity to go over 50% to pull out my paints. Otherwise it's just a lesson in frustration. Have fun!
I've been watching you since I started watercolor, I recently started using gouache as well so it's nice to see this from you! I've really fallen in love with gouache!
So glad to see you using it. I love your style
thanks soooo much, I have a set of gouache. never use it. now I will. show us more ways to use it !!! lovely!!!
I love painting with gouache. (I still paint with watercolors, too). I agree about the versatility…you can water it down to paint like watercolors or use it thicker. I find that if I’m painting on some papers, watercolors don’t paint near as well as gouache. I’ve truly fallen in love with it. I really need to play with it though and see what color mixes I can come up with … using a limited palette. Hopefully you will paint with gouache again soon. Thanks for sharing this beautiful floral.
its the best
You have the BEST ideas and tips. Thank you, Ellen!
You are so welcome!
I love this it’s really beautiful.
I love this medium. Thank you for the great tutorial. It got me to play with my new shiny set and just have fun.
I love this , love doing wild flowers.
Have you tried Holbein Acrylic Gouache? I was trained with gouache as an illustrator. I discovered Holbein Acrylic Gouache about 5 years ago. You can layer this paint without pulling up colors underneath. I love the consistency of these paints. You can layer them light on dark colors or dark on light colors. They dry with a flat finish.
This is so gorgeous!! Love how vibrant it is!! thx u!
I recently bought Winsor Newton gouache, and you have taught me how to use it. Many thanks!
Gouache is fascinating. Just learning and loving it. :) Will be trying this out. Thank you.
Wow I am anxious to try the gouache painting. As I am a beginner to watercolor. I learn so much from you every time I watch you
Lovely picture! I’ve got some gouache but needed this to prompt me to have a go. Thank you!
Wonderful!
So beautiful ❤ And, an added education on GUOCHE. Thank you EC
