Deep dive (explained, did you know?, everything we know about, complete history, theory) of the Water Powered Watch Waterworld, the 1995 cult, science fiction, post-apocalyptic, fantasy, action film Waterworld, staring Kevin Costner, as the Mariner, and Jeanne Tripplehorn, as Helen, Tina Majorino, as Enola, Michael Jeter, as old Gregor, R.D. Call, as the Enforcer, and Dennis Hopper, as the Deacon, and Directed by Kevin Reynolds. We look at how this piece of collecting history, 90's and 80's nostalgia, watch collecting, let's see if it works, the "clear craze", education toy.
I love when people are insanely stoked by what others would just consider meaningless minutia. That’s why this might be my favorite channel on UA-cam.
Thanks Eric! I too am always looking for the little niche corners of UA-cam!
thank you so much for your deeply researched videos. Everyone knows, you deserve so much more views, but your videos will be online for decades. The views will come! You bring so much joy for new and old waterworld fans, thanks!
Oh man, thank you so much for this comment! I see this UA-cam channel as just a strange little internet rabbit hole that hopefully people will stumble upon over the years.
That's freaking awesome man, nice addition to the collection for sure
Haha! Yeah, one of the coolest pieces in the collection for sure!
A battery is normally made of MULTIPLE voltaic cells, but is used as well for those. However a voltaic cell is typicly made of two different metals one more precious than the other. And adding some kind of acid (or water in this case) will start the electron flow and therefore power the watch. A good voltaic cell delivers around 0.4-0.5 Volts. I think that each sponge in the watch is part of one cell, so the delivered voltage should be around 1.5V as in one normal knob cell.
The ecological aspect of this watch is a little bit overdone, as these cells will be used up at one point in time.
None the less, an interesting collectors piece, never heard of water powered watches before!
This is an incredible comprehensive answer, thank you! So doing some quick research based on your explanation, the two metals on either side of the sponge are probably zinc and copper, and the zinc is losing electrons and will eventually be "used up"?
@@TheAtoll Yes, exactly. Someday it would be gone.
Zinc and Copper are the most common cells, I think.
What's interesting is its likely because of this design the watch still works. Without an electrolyte, the batteries should have a very long shelf life
Killer mullet dude! 🎸
Thanks bud!!!
I keep being surprised by the amount of memorabilia for this movie.
I know! It's amazing how deep this rabbit holes goes!
I think that's the beauty of THE ATOLL, just when you think you've seen it all it comes back to surprise you
@@shortfilms5667 I'll keep digging!
Very cool watch. Had no idea that existed, great find
Yeah, these are super rare! I think I have only seen them come up on eBay once. Thanks for checking out the video!
What a perfect match for merchandising!
I know, right!?
I had one that wasnt branded for Water World. Mine was from about 90-91 it was awesome.
They are pretty cool watches! Very of-their-time ;)
I miss the clear craz. I love all see through electronics!!
yeah totally! We love to see the "guts"!
Pretty sure I sold this to you! Very glad you like it
Thanks again!
Great video, Also a great channel. Keep up the quality work :)
Thank you! Yes, the channel is very much alive! I am currently working on one of the biggest for the channel yet, so keep an eye out for that in the coming weeks!
@@TheAtoll Awesome! Thanks for the reply :)
I can’t stop watching this channel lol
Well, glad your enjoying the collection of vids Joel! I did something right!
Ahh man i want a modern watch like that
I know! Such a cool design!
Interesting as always, happy to see your collection get one piece larger.
Thanks Michael! This watch really sparked my interest and I had share it here!
I had a purple clear gameboy and N64 controller.
I thought they were cool.
And they were!
@@TheAtoll would love to get a water watch like this one.
The watch is battery powered, it just ships with an incomplete battery.
It operates on galvanic corrosion of dissimilar metals in the presence of an electrode.
In this case, the electrode is water.
The metals will eventually fully corrode.
Why build a battery like this? The reason it was done here is for a slightly dishonestly marketed gimmick, but there is another advantage; when dry, the battery will not degrade, which is why it survived storage just fine.
Agreed, the advertising on the packaging is a little misleading, haha!
@HALLish-jl5mo thanks for the info.
Great video! You just got +1 Subscriber
Glad you enjoyed it! I really appreciate the subscription and welcome aboard!
@@TheAtoll Thanks! enjoy your content... Found your channel through casual navigation through a comment
Imagine this guy takes the watch to pawn stars. Rick like I have to call in my toy expert. Toy guy be like this watch worth 100k but only when still in the un opened packaging.
Hahaha!
Good ol' '90s, when things were made to last. I remember seen these and similar watches in the shops when I was a kid, always made me wonder how they worked.
Haha, I am still wondering how it works!
that same type of battery is used in life jacket strobe light
Really?! Okay, that totally makes sense! So when the life jacket hits the water, the circuit is completed, automatically turning on the light.
@@TheAtoll Yup it takes time because the cells are covered in a water solvent coating to avoid ambient corrosion. sadly most new ones use an Alkaline battery because it is more durable in storage. and that is a lousy thing iron copper batteries have less ambient impact when they degrade
You know why the compass isn’t working on it? The poles have been flipped!
Haha! Nice.
Its a edison battery attached to a clock...
An Edison Battery? I have not heard it called this. I you have the time, Lol pun not intended, can you explain more?
Great to see youre almost at 1k! Im glad to say ive been a fan since the beginning :)
Almost there! Thanks for coming along for the ride!
Great I’m in my 30s and now I want a water watch lol
Haha! Hey, I guess that's two of us!
WOO you opened it and it still worked. That's why I subscribed to this channel, crazy
I was so relived to find it still worked!
Man, imagine how many chits you could get for that, I think enough for twelve Gs of hydro
Haha, time to go down to the trading post and see!
I wonder how many of these Ulysses found in the underwater cities? They would have made telling time a lot easier for him, that's for sure.
It would really be the perfect watch to own in Waterworld!
@@TheAtoll
Waterworld sequel TV series was just announced by Universal Cable Productions.
@@Elfrunner Yes! let's hope it happens!!!
@@TheAtoll Would it though? Waterworld was covered in salt water, which is full of salt and other electrolytes. This would not only affect the function of the watch battery, it would also increase corrosion. This is worth testing: if you can find some of those other, less rare and collectable, water-powered watches, you could do a side-by-side test using fresh water in one and salt water in another and seeing how well they hold up.
@@Swindle1984Was it all Saltwater? Wasnt the larger part of water worlds water made up from ice on land, and from meteor impacts? The heavier saltwater should stay in layers below the sweet water.
From what I've seen, there's quite a bit of WaterWorld merchandise that's just vaguely water themed objects with the WaterWorld branding slapped on
Yes! I recall a waterworld t shirt that expanded to full size when you added water to it. I recently posted it to The Atoll Instagram. Can you recall any other specific waterworld water collectables or souvenirs??
@@TheAtoll I haven't found anything besides the things that you've already seen but I'll keep a look out
That’s awesome! Great video
Hey! Glad you enjoyed it!
Wtf this is so cool
Yeah, agreed! Very unique collectable.
Wow too cool! I'm shocked it still works! Thank you for finding this and sharing.
Awesome video as always 👍
Yes, I was very happy it worked! I am not sure what I would have done with the video if it didn't!
WOW !! Great Find .. No One else even have this listed as a memorabilia !!
Hey! Thanks for checking out the video Lane!
Ahh yes, like the water powered cars.
(typo in the description)
Haha! Thanks for pointing out the typo!
You're going to do a follow-up video in 25 years to let us know if the watch is still working, right?
Haha! Sure! See you in 25!
yayyyyyyy 🎊🎊🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊👏👏👏👏😸👏😸👏😸 very cool watch
Thanks for coming through Stoner Cat!!! Always a pleasure to have you comment on my videos!!!
Easy to forget that y2k was a thing. Doubt this was y2k compliant
Yeah, I hadn't even thought about that! I wonder if it is...
I can neither confirm nor deny that a watch has been purchased on this day…..
Congratulations! It's an opportunity that you may never come by again!
@@TheAtoll though now the seller just canceled my order saying that the packaging was damaged which I was aware of before I bought it. Then I discovered that they relisted it for $99, pretty shady if you ask me. I asked them why they did that but I doubt I’ll get a response. Very disappointed..
Dude, that is so lame. I hope there is a way you can leave a review of that seller. That seller, Ball Mart, actually commented on this video. It's very disappointing that they used my video as an opportunity to screw you over. I am sorry.
@@TheAtoll No need to apologize man. You’re doing a great service to all of us fans of the movie by giving us such in-depth and and quality content that nobody else seems to have done before. If someone decides to take advantage of your effort and screw over others well that’s on them and not you. I’d much rather that be the case than you not being here to keep the fandom alive!
Absolutely fascinating! Definitely would love to own one of these, or something similar.
Yeah! They are so cool! I feel like they could become trendy again.
Where can I buy one?
If you're looking for a Waterworld branded one, good luck, they are extraordinarily rare. I found mine on Ebay. However, if you don't care about the Waterworld branding, there are some more generic ones on Ebay. Try searching "water-powered watch".
i thought from the thumbnail you cut your glorious hair..glad to see we wont have to organize a boycott
Haha! Still and will always have my mullet! It's my calling card at this point!
Why did this never catch on? It would be better for the environment and it’s pretty cool.
I know! Maybe they will have a revival!
Basically the watch is an "electrolyte battery".
It is comprised of two cells:
One cell is positive usually Copper.
One cell is negative usually Zinc.
Water alone is not enough to power the watch, as you may have guessed from the name you also need an electrolyte.
This is why it asks you to shake the watch the sponges are impregnated with electrolyte chemical which dissolves into the water creating a solution that allows for the electrons to flow.
Whilst it appears to be better for the environment at face value, it is basically just an unclosed version of your traditional button cell batteries.
Obviously i cannot know for sure, but i would guess this watch would have a usage life* between 8760 - 26280 hours after which you'll have to replace the entire watch. Button cell batteries have a usage life between 17520- 52560 and of course you can replace the battery and keep the watch.
*assuming optimal conditions, not accounting for corrosion or off gassing.
So much merchandise I can't believe this is real lol
I couldn't believe it either when I fist saw it come up on eBay!
Never even heard of it :D truly rare
Hey Marcelo! Thanks for checking out the video!
👍👍👍👍
That's awesome. What are some other WW items that you don't have?
There are a few things out there that I am still searching for!
Watching this Video made me wonder: would the watch still work if you put it under Salt water? I can imagine the Salt destroying the sponges or plugging up something like with the soap.
Hm, I am not entirely sure. I think it would still work with salt water. Someone else in the comments was suggesting that the watch is a voltaic cell, which traditionally uses salt water.
Just got one from Ebay watch lot for $10. Missing the buckle but still work great! what a bargain
Good to hear it still works!
@@TheAtoll The compass on mine is the same like the one in your video, so I think that's how it is, for cosmetic purpose only lol
👌👌👌👌
Thanks for checking out the video Jens!
What happens if you pee on it? JK.
This is so cool! I want one. And I thought I'd seen all the Waterworld merch. Thanks so much for showing us.
Haha! yeah, this piece is pretty obscure, but makes so much sense!
All kidding aside if the battery operates by having two different metals with an acetic electrolyte in between. (think potato battery) than pee should work.
I can neither confirm nor deny that a watch has been purchased on this day…..
congrats!
