I found some of the details of the real stunt plane. The aircraft was actually a 1963 H-395/U-10B, serial number 63-13183, registered to Kona Productions as N101BL. She was originally assigned to the Army Attache office in Vientiane, Laos, and then leased to Air America by the army as "183" and next sold to Sky of Siam in Thailand and registered as HS-CHF before Kona Productions acquired the aircraft and registered her as N101BL. Obviously destroyed in filming, the plane’s tail number is now registered to a different aircraft while 63-13183 was sold to a private collector and hasn’t be heard of since.
The plane crash was always one of my favorite shots, especially when the floats get ripped of and the perfect alignment of the plane nose when sliding towards the camera.
4:31-4:33 The shot of the speargun-armed Atoller getting gunned down by the Skyboat and the bullets just missing the trapped Mariner in his prison cage was used in a early scene when the Hellfire Gunboat fired at the Atoll wall, before the plane made its grand entrance.
8:57 For those wondering, this example photo was taken from the production of the 2012 movie “Red Tails,” the aircraft being a reproduction of a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighter.
Absolutely love your channel. Thank you for all of the research you've donet. Waterworld is, and always has been, my favorite film of all time. It's nice to see others giving it the respect and attention it deserves.
Oh man! Such a great deep dive! Really loved all the discussion about the vfx. Hey where did you find that picture of the bow of the deez at 16:40? Is that in the making of WW book? I know they filmed it on a tarmac but haven't seen that picture before. Such a great video dude!
Thanks Jamie! I pulled that photo from the image gallery on the Arrow blu-ray release, and truth be told I believe it is just the partially completed set in the City of Commerce, not the tarmac in the desert. Unfortunately I don't think that any production stills exist of the set built for the plane crash. It's a shame because it would be really neat to see what that stunt looked like from another angle.
I just love the idea of the corporations that are most keen on abusing the Earth lecturing common folks about not abusing the Earth by abusing the Earth even more during the movie production. The film makers and producers probably didn´t understand the irony of creating smokers as the bad guys, but behaving in an even more destructive way than them...
17:43 And that would be a Martin JRM Mars, a massive 117 foot long 200 foot wingspan flying boat used in WWII and as a fire bomber post war. Only 6 were ever made, and two, _Hawaii Mars_ and _Philippine Mars,_ survive to this day.
Thank you Forrest! I have the big Deez deep dive video planed for the next video, and then a video on the Great Deluge. And I have tons of other videos planed for after that as we go into the new year!
I've only seen this movie once or twice, but wow I had no idea this much went into everything. Been binging the channel over the past few days, amazing work man
Thanks Jake! I have't rewatched this one since I published it, but I remember feeling really good about how the script came together. It felt like an improvement on my other aviation video on Gregor's dirigible, which I did about a year before to this one.
I’m not following every channel as I move from my old Channel NALTO to this new one, but you better believe I’m following this one. By the way, after watching Waterworld, I’m going to review Data Design’s unreleased Genesis game on real hardware on this very channel (via Mega Everdrive or similar flash carts)
I also really like the original script. It is well crafted with a plot that probably would have more easily pleased audiences. The character development in the original scripts is much deeper and better paced as well.
@@TheAtoll If anyone would make a remake one day I hope that they will go back to basic and take a look at the first script re-work it and hire someone like Gary Gray who directed the The Italian Job remake
@@sanyonazyin6063 Yeah, that Italian Job remake is real good. I remember catching it on TV a number of years back and being like "Wow, this movie is surprisingly fresh and unpredictable." Underrated!

Yeah, Kevin Reynolds is excellent at capturing these little moments that build out an exciting action sequence. An underrated action director in my opinion.
I have been debating whether or not to do an entire video dedicated to Dryland. I cover it quite a bit in the Mysteries of Enola's Tattoo video, and also in an upcoming video on The Great Deluge, which I'm currently scripting and will publish in a few weeks. But who knows! Maybe a little ways down the road I will make a whole video on Dryland, and talk more about the village and the wooden Trimaran!

yea the lil single prop def doesnt have much power, really it can hardly carry passengers and their limited luggage lol thats why the engines fail so often and they fall out the air, you will never get me onto one of those death traps haha

Agreed! The Deacon's failed getaway abroad the Deez is one of the most spectacular sequences in the film!

Jack black in this movie and mars attacks is definitely none forgettable

Anyone else feel that an immersive VR experience in Waterworld is much needed? Not a total blast them up but life as the Mariner.
That would be cool! Friend of the channel Jamie Going was working on something like that I believe.
Possibly the only film where JB dosen't play "himself".
True, though in the extended cut he does have some very Jack Black moments when he's freaking out in the Deacon's state room!
