Hello Macaw45! I Just returned from vacation to find a big jump in my number of subscribers and people keep telling me I have you to thank! Thank you so much for sharing my little corner of the internet to your viewers!
I must say, I chuckled when I saw the headline for this video and thought, "Okay, we must be running out of ideas if we're desperate enough to cover the freaking tomato plant." But I was surprised at how it turned into an exploration of Waterworld's vegetation and nutrition, and I was even more surprised to learn that the tree at the Atoll actually has gravestones; I never saw those before! And the fact that Universal licensed a freaking tomato pot is hilarious; they were really trying to outdo Star Wars when it came to merchandising everything imaginable! If you ever really do run out of ideas of stuff to cover, here are some suggestions! "Everything we know about the Mariner's rearview mirror that he offers to the boys at the atoll if they don't steal his stuff" "Everything we know about the Deacon's miniature golf set" "Everything we know about the store shelves the Mariner bought" "Everything we know about Smeat" "Everything we know about the skeletons of Enola's parents"
Haha! Yeah, I too was surprised when I got an entire video out of the tomato plant! Thank you for the suggestions for future video topics. I actually really love the idea of doing a video on SMEAT!
The mini tomato pot is friggin awesome. You don't get promo-merch like that these days. You win 2nd place in my obscure movie items book. 1st place going to an original Dune (1984). Very obscure Feyd Rautha action figure that actually came with the accessory cat/rat experiment vaccination cage. What could beat that!? 😆🤘
Tomatoes are fascinating plants. The seeds can survive the digestive system, and even the waste water treatment facility. Last year there was a big drought in Europe, and the river Rhine was almost dried up. On the now exposed river bed there grew tomato plants everywhere. The seeds got washed in the river after waste water treatment, and were able to survive there for months or even years.
"well... maybe he has some FOOD!!!!!!!!!" LOL the extended cut gladly explains where THAT came from. poor helen and Enola wanted some of that tomato. and hearing her scream food at the mariner cracks me up every time! 😆
It could be possible that the scenes where the smokers took the fruits from the great tree. Could be possibly be breadfruit. As that particular fruit as much as mangoes 🥭 and coconuts were amongst the most common in atoll and islands hopping. Though fertile drain able soil is ideal for growing these fruits. The can survive and thrive in sandy/somewhat salty soils which is perfect for a floating atoll as such in your presentation. But those are just my two cents on the subject matter at hand.
Aww yes! I am looking at images of breadfruit now and it's a near perfect match to the mystery fruit in the film! Thank you for this insightful comment MAH79!

Incidentally, every part of the tomato plant except the fruit is poisonous, so eating the leaves is not only counterproductive, as the Marine basically killed his rare and expensive plant by doing so, he also made himself sick in the process.

the fruit on the tree looks like mangos, but kinda like with the "tomato tree" the plant they're "growing" on looks wrong. also interesting that the variety of tomato doesn't seem to matter... in the movie it's a cherry tomato, though the plant is clearly more stalky than a cherry tomato plant. the one at the stunt show seems to just be a beefsteak or something similar and the collectable claims to be "Rutgers" which is kinda in-between the 2 but definitely a larger variety than the one in the movie. tho from what I can tell Rutgers tomato seeds are still available if you want to grow them.

That guy ate the leaves off a tomato plant...... and survived?! Tomsto plant leaves are toxic! The plant itself is a type of nightshade! That's why people used to think the fruit was poisonous.
Kind of escapist fantasy since no-one really needs any food or water, no-one dies who isn't supposed to die, no-one really suffers, they have the entire planet to themselves.
What I never could figure out was he paid/ traids dirt for chits, he then buys everything including the tomatoe 🍅 plant. Wtf was in the tomatoe bucket 🪣? DIRT! He got just as much dirt back as he traids for. The money not balance out...
Haha, yeah, I have thought about this before too. I guess whatever the "dirt" the tomato plant is planted in must not be very "pure", probably from the pool of sludge in the organon barge.
What’s exactly are the chits he uses for trading? Also I really love your channel, you’ve answered so many questions I’ve had. I wish we had a greater Waterworld universe to get story from.
Glad you are enjoying the channel! I am not sure exactly what chit are made of, but in one of my past collecting videos, I do show off some chit promotional keychains that came out around the 1995 release of the film. Haha, they are made of plastic! Hopefully we get that TV/Streaming show that was announced last year so that we have much more Waterworld to talk about!!!
those fruits remind me of either coconuts before the outside is stripped from them or mangoes. But the tree is wrong for coconuts and looks a bit warped to be mango. Then again that is an OLD tree and probably not growing in ideal conditions. Has the right leaves for mango (albeit a bit too large), the fruit is almost the right shape and the color looks about right. www.palmtalk.org/forum/uploads/post-1786-078198900%201313008909.jpg
Yes, totally! Mutant mangos was my first hunch as well. Other people in the comments have suggested Breadfruit, which I think does look quite accurate too.
In the original Spirt the atolls and other settlements are using kelp as a staple crop and they even use kelp to brew alcohol as kelp cider.

:´(
The old growth fruit tree kinda looks like a jackfruit
Yes, I just looked up some images of jackfruit and totally agree!
Just try to get the same kind of tomato seeds and get the waterworld tomato plant growing experience! :-D
True enough!!! I was going to try growing some tomatoes this spring!!!
You should grow an actual tomato plant next to youe water world collection lol
I think that's a great idea! I should have thought of that myself.
it's not a tomaato plant it's a tomaarto plant
Funny thumbnail
Haha, yeah, thanks!
Cool
Haha, this is still one of my favorite videos on the channel!
@@TheAtoll It gives me some good screenshots for a possible Wasteland project
You would think he would have saved the seeds
Haha, you know what, that also bothered me!
Bet they had some dope weed strains
Haha! Yeah, we would hope!!!
best UA-cam content
Hey, Thanks so much SSkotte!!!
Agreed
Kind of escapist fantasy since no-one really needs any food or water, no-one dies who isn't supposed to die, no-one really suffers, they have the entire planet to themselves.
Im sorry I don't quite follow. Do you mean this about the film Waterworld?
hmm yummy tomatos
Haha, I should have made this a cooking video!
Tomato seeds survive the human digestion system. They are actually a huge problem in sewage treatment where sewage meets sunlight.
Haha, wow okay! I did not know that! Maybe I could have grown those seeds if they are that hardy!

Thanks again for visiting the Atoll, Stoner Cat!
@TheAtoll well it wasn't until I found your channel I even knew about the organization barge. Love the channel keep up the good work!

Yes, totally! Mutant mangos was my first hunch as well. Other people in the comments have suggested Breadfruit, which I think does look quite accurate too.
I’ve always liked the pots the plants were in. Very unique look
