I’m new to the wheel ,after 7 tries about an hour each time and cleanup! I began to doubt that I could learn this ! I even thought about I might be a lefty instead of right handed all my life ! And then I watched your video!! From the first example onwards I needed every trouble shooting example to let me see my mistakes! Oh did I need this ! Bless you, for sharing your expertise. The best on you tube!
Thank you very much. You answered almost all of my questions. In a exact and cool way. 🧡 I really enjoy watching and listening to you. Hope you are healthy! Greetings from a german follower living in Danmark.
Oh no! It stopped, that was the most crucial part, 😫 that close up and you being at that angle was so good! Thank you for your instruction and taking this time simon, you are so generous with both.
Being able to see positive-negative space is a real help when shaping a pot , even just a cylinder; that is, the space of the pot's vertical edge and the air-space that butts up to it. Both are equally important.
One of your best videos ever Simon! Some of this has never been explained before. Let alone how to correct things. I’ll be referring to this so much when I throw next. Thank you!
This is superb. Really helpful to see how I'm going wrong and pointing out how to sort it. Explaining the details of how the clay reacts and how to hold is so helpful.
Amazing answers to questions that bugged me for some time as a beginning potter! Thank you for sharing what you know with us. It is greatly appreciated! Please continue with all you do. Your an inspiration.
Thank you so much Simon, I know I've heard it before from you, but sometimes you show us and explain in a slightly different way. Voila, it sinks in. You covered several things that I encounter from time to time. Your the best! Thank you again!
Excellent!!! Just back from practicing throwing, as I'm a beginner, and I experienced most of these issues today so thankyou your video was a life saver :) Thanks Simon.
Thanks! It looked like you were done and I prepared to make a comment because my common error preventing me from getting mugs beyond a certain height wasn't addressed. I know I'm not unique in this area. Haha. But then you went back to the wheel, and I think you addressed my problem! My cylinders tend to get a bit too thin about 2/3 up and too thick the rest of the way. I frequently have to cut them off. I think what you showed when you first start to lift the clay is a key. Thank you very much!
Thank you . I'm doing exactly what you talked about twisting of the clay . Also pulling up clay. This video is going to help. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge.
This was great! I have a throwing issue that after I do a six point collar-in the top rim flops or folds in, would you demo how to recover a flopped-in rim? Thank you for the videos...I have been learning so much!
Thank you for sharing this. I´m just getting started and this is really helpful. Solved many of my problems. One question remains. How hard or soft should the clay be for different sizes and shapes?
Thank you so much! Ever since I got my new shimpo, I have not been able to throw a cylinder. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. But from your video, I realize I'm not getting the clay centered perfectly. Maybe its not me and its the new wheel???? I am a beginner, so I'm sure it mostly me. But I seem to be able to center at the studio???
Thankyou for doing this video. It really helped. The only problem that you seemed to miss that I have is that sometimes my clay is not wedged good enough or sometimes it's too hard or too soft. What is the best consistency to work with, in your estimation.?
Hi again from rural Japan. 16:48: Regarding the demon "Torque". I wonder if it can often begin during insufficient/unskilful wedging. Also, I find it happens when I pull the clay up faster than the wheel speed. Thanks!
Demon Torque is right. I'm still trying to find the right clay consistency. Such a bugger that softer clay means less torque resistance. Sometimes I feel like there's no way to win.
Do you use an outdoor camcorder so you're able to wipe off all sticky things? Seems no matter how hard I try everything within 3' of my work area has finger prints and splatters on it. Pulled my camcorder out of the box once and within minutes....
Check out some of my kneading / wedging videos, they might help. It is common at first in learning how to center, but don’t give up, you can do it I promise, just keep practicing. I had some problems when I first started on the wheel !
My main problem is difficulty lifting evenly. I get thin spots or I can't get it to lift past a certain point so I can't complete the lift. More water doesn't necessarily help. *sigh* Practice.
Wheel speed is important but what about the head shake. How much head shake is required for producing tankers. Is it simply a Stevie Wonder or are we talking about a full Ray Charles.

I’m great at making unwanted clay “predicaments”. Thank you for this help. Awesome teacher.

Absolutely a perfect lesson from a Master Potter, thank you Simon, so helpful. And the piece collapsed ONLY when you allowed it to, marvellous!

Thank you very much Simon. This is very valuable for me as a newbie/hobby potter.

Thank you for this lesson! very helpful! well taught!
thank you so much! Its just crazy how you are able to fix everything if you know how to do it and have enough experience 👌
Yes experience helps and muscle memory (which new beginners don’t have, but need ! ) …Practicing helps build that memory.
This guy, Simon Leech, is a master potter and very down to earth.
Such an excellent tutorial. Thank you

Good video..I think centering is most important. Step too throwing !
Great video very helpful! Looks like it cut out at the end…
Very helpful.. thx
Vital info, most vids only show perfection and never address these concerns

I get dirtier at the clay studio than I do with my horse!
the orange wheel you have off to the side,, im buying one just like it.Do you like that wheel?
I do like the wider body tankard.
i cant seem to push out the base enough to do the lift
NICE !
garbage and artifacts in clay drive me bonkers. metal chips from the mill, hair, sponge bits, air bubbles, dry powder.
Ah but often the base isn't right because it's too thin! and there's nothing left to push out!...
Does anyone know what kind of clays Simon uses?
standard 306
I just had my first class and went back to practice centering today and I can't seem to center at all and i already feel like giving up ":(
Check out some of my kneading / wedging videos, they might help. It is common at first in learning how to center, but don’t give up, you can do it I promise, just keep practicing. I had some problems when I first started on the wheel !
The physics of clay throwing I believe is beginner rocket science!
My main problem is difficulty lifting evenly. I get thin spots or I can't get it to lift past a certain point so I can't complete the lift. More water doesn't necessarily help.
*sigh* Practice.
I also brace/steady with my right/strong hand. I thought I was an oddball against convention.
My left fingers are too weak to open the clay but my left hand is strong enough to hold the clay while my stronger right fingers do the work.
Wheel speed is important but what about the head shake. How much head shake is required for producing tankers. Is it simply a Stevie Wonder or are we talking about a full Ray Charles.
I figure he's judging shape and distances by moving his eyes for better depth perception.
Crikey my pot would have died ages ago, all the messing about with it and it’s still going!
Ikr? His messed up pot is so much better than the best I've managed so far!
Stronger hand depend if you are left or right handed duuuu
No se ve nada, saque las manos, señor!!!
