- A walkthrough how I manage brand colour palettes across different design software. Please remember to subscribe bit.ly/1aE5UOT
When you're working on designs for the same brand, it's important to keep your colors consistent. In this video i show how I do it (with no colour-picking involved...). Hopefully it helps you figure out how to manage your color palette files in a very easy way.
PC users: I've got no clue how color palettes work on your computer sorry.

Since this tutorial covered the technical side of managing color palettes rather than how to actually choose the colors for them I wanted to share some resources for that:

My videos no longer have pre-roll ads because I think ads are annoying. That means you don't have to sit through ads, and it also means I don't earn anything from the content I put on UA-cam. If you want to support me and my channel the best thing you can do is order something from my online store! I make t-shirts and printed products and you're bound to find something you like :)

Wait Charli's hair matches her own colour palette. mind blown
+DIP DAB MEDIA haha!! Always gotta be on brand 🙌
I like that! Great Tip for my personal branding lol
Hahaha
You may never know how thankful I came across your channel. I do not have a digital design background whatsoever, but I just started a new business where all these types of types are LIFESAVERS!!!!!! Thank u for providing this info in such an easy to understand video! ☺️
ahh so glad to hear this!
This is a highly under utilized and important thing to do. So simple yet under appreciated
+Mark Harvey exactly! One of those things that if you put the time into at the start, it makes it so much easier going forward.
I've been trying to organize the colors used on our app, thanks for the video, and cool new glasses, looks awesome!
+Roshna Omer thank you! I like them too :) and I'm glad this video will help you with your app colours!
Thank you for posting great tutorials! Could you please explain how you go about picking the shades of the primary color? E.g., do you always adjust just the value component, or just the saturation, or is there more to it? How do you decide that the shades you pick work well?
Great tutorial! I love your tutorials and trips and tricks videos. :) When I save colors, I've been taught to save it under .ase. I've never knew there were 3 different ways of saving your color palettes.
.ase is probably the best 'all round' file type to save as! from there you can do the converting like I showed in this video :)
great stuff! super helpful info, Charli. thank you!
love the new glasses, by the way!
thanks Elaine!
Aw man I was watching this without headphones and the moment you said that sentence with Google (5:55) my phone and Google Home both turned on
Great tip. Can you make a video on color theory- as in what is the thinking process when selecting the right colors and how do you finalize those additional shades.
+Umran check out the link in the description for a great resource for choosing colours by Kyle Adams! I don't have a video planned for this right now but he's the expert on it and has lots of great info to share!
thank you!
"Yay colour! ❤" 😂😂 Great use of background props Charli lol
haha I'm glad someone noticed!
Thank you so much for this! Great tutorial.
Fantastic video Charli! I'll definitely be pointing people here for palette management. Thank you for pointing toward Choosing Great Colors as well!
i'm so excited about your course because it sounds like from the comments a bunch of people could get a lot of value from it! (I've mentioned your name to a lot of them so feel free to reply and say hi if you like)
CharliMarieTV Thanks Charli. I've had a great response from those taking the course and really appreciate you sharing it. Hopefully I can help some of those here as well!
This is going to come in so handy for work! Thanks!
+Lucia Montes let me know if you need any help!
really nice tips.
Good one charli yippee kiyay you seem more relaxed and confident doing your video's now great.
haha cheers!
Do you have a template (or generator) for the great layout of colour swatches you showed in the ConvertKit template (@ 1:35)? I really like the layout, but wondered if there was a more streamlined way to create it without firing up Illustrator.
+Invervegas no sorry I created it in Sketch!
Do you use any specific tools for brand style guide management? I've been using Frontify for a long time, because it doesn't require the extra effort to design inhouse material, but I'm curious how you optimize your workflow for creating/managing guides.
If you use InVision or Zeplin for collaborating and gathering feedback you can upload your Artboard there and others and pick the colors (that's the most living styleguide we in our team can manage to do). But frontify is definitely the best if also people across the company or project need some details.
But it's also possible to do it with Craft (by InVision) or brand.ai but those are more a way to sync colors, components and so on between designers.
No i don't actually! probably should... haha
This video is so helpful! OMG can't believe I haven't made an Adobe colour palette yet even tho I've been using a specific colour palette for a video for a month now! I feel like such an idiot :D
haha thanks for the reminder ;)
OMG Hanna get on that color palette life right nowww! But also don't feel bad i didn't make my color palette until i filmed this video either haha
Thank you Charli :) this is helpful!
Could you make more video about color concpeting or how to choose color for brand.
thank you so much
My friend Kyle Adams has made a great course about how to choose the best colors! check it out here: kyleadams.me/choosing-great-colors/
ltc Carol As Charli mentioned I have a lot of great info about this in the course. I'm always happy to answer any questions you may have. There's even a free guide available there to get started.
Thank you!
When sending a client the logo design we have ended up with, do you give some examples of colors?
+PAdenmark it depends what was agreed/needed as assets in the proposal/contract, but I personally would put together a brand guidelines document detailing the colours and provide a .ase and a .clr for them.
Alright. I have started working on getting clients. Getting a portfolio, finding my pricepoint, which clients i should work for and so on. After that, i just need to get clients :D
can you do a tutorial on coming up with color palettes for brands please
+Sabrina Summers you should definitely check out my friend Kyles course at choosinggreatcolors.com for great info on that!
I notice you still use sketch (i don't have a mac), whats your thoughts on adobe experience? and do you think it'll ever become the industry standard?
I think Figma seems to be the next thing that everyone is excited about! And that works on windows :)
Wow i used figma tonight for a site mock-up, it's so good! the fact that it has all the google fonts is so helpful!
a quick check for affinty designer color palette file ext is ".afpalette" and its import also .ase
Really nice!!! Thank you! But will be good if you can make a kind of Part II explain how you choose a color and how you create the variations (how many % of variation from one to another color) of this color to build the color palette.
you should totally check out Kyle Adams resources for choosing colors! he's made a whole course about it and has a free guide giveaway too :) kyleadams.me/choosing-great-colors/
AWESOME!!!! Thank you Charli. I really appreciate! :-)
Fernando Goya the course covers finding colors and variations in depth. There's also a video on my channel here on UA-cam that can help you get started with variations. It's a great starting point!
Hey the location in your background doesn't look like your flat. Where are you? PS very helpful video since I'm starting to use Sketch a lot.
+Lisa Pierson just in a different corner! Haha
Ah shucks, thought you were in another corner of the world. Weren't you suppose to go to Seattle? Use to live there, great place.
Hi Charli, could you do a tutorial on a shape building (heart, cogs, etc) in Illustrator or sketch?
Honestly I tend to use my Noun Project subscription quite liberally to get basic shapes to work with rather than building my own from scratch!
I use the same method :)
Charli
would you make a vid about creating your pallete?
the best person to look at for advice on this is Kyle Adams! he just created a course all about how to choose the right color :)
rosi p As Charli mentioned, I have a course available at choosinggreatcolors.com. It goes in-depth on the topic of creating palettes and there's even a free resource available on the page to get you started!
The course is wayyyy too expensive for me :( Would it be any possible for you to make a video giving quick tips for creating a colour palette for a beginner like myself? Love your videos Charli!!
can you make a video regarding on how to pick colors for your pallets?
maybe in the future! but for now you should totally check out the advice Kyle Adams gives in choosinggreatcolors.com
CharliMarieTV thank you!!
hmm interesting....whats your process converting colors Cmyk rgb Hex (in no particular order) what are the best practices
eg using pantone watches for cmyk print stuff.... myself used to design print stuff in cmyk (norm) now in the habit of designing print designs in rgb for preview purposes then converting to cmyk later after approval... is this advisable?
*Just curious about your process though keeping consistent brand colors across all media.
Sorry this got really long hope you read it though lol
i use a site called rgb.to to get approximations for the conversions and use that as my starting point to test! :)
Nice will check it out thanks & thanks again for coming back to reply
I just use the Adobe libraries. Even if someone doesn't use Adobe software (not that likely) you can still provide them with a link that lets them view the colours on a web page. No need to mess about with swatch files imo.
+Richard Dale many web designers use software that isn’t adobe based so in that case exporting a color palette is great! And plus it only takes like two seconds to export the .ase once you’ve got your colours in an adobe program.
where are you working? are you working for agency or are you freelance?
+wrangleroooo I work remotely for a tech company :)
Great Tips , iloveYou
Good video Charli. Make a video on your opinion of Affinity Designer after a week of use :)
+Cat Down The Road I'll have to make some time to try it!
Cat Down The Road I agree, it would be great to see what Charlie thinks about the Affinity software! I've tried Affinity Photo and quite like it!
Please do a video for tips you wish you knew when you where a beginner (/student) that can be helpful for beginners today.
great idea! adding to my list :)
Please make more sketch videos. thanks.
is there anything in particular you'd like to see a video on? :)
CharliMarieTV iOS application sketching would be amazing. Thanks for being so kind.
nice video
Same person charli just different email phone went into a spasm sorted now sorry
useless, you should give an example of how a project is made with the color palette. learning the programs is easy
The purpose of the video was to show you how to manage a color palette and keep things tidy. As you said, learning the programs is easy so it’s pretty easy just to select a color in the software once you have it all set up.
