Wow a perfect Aggi’s performance. The chorous are magnetic. Frida harmonizing Sounds from another planet. Everything was perfect!. Agnetha sounds wonderful, clean and brilliant this time.
'Happy New Year' is one of ABBA's best songs and I listen to every New Year's Eve/New Year's Day at midnight, Bjorn is the one standing at the window and the videos for 'Happy New Year' and 'Super Trouper' were filmed on the same day.
A timeless hymn! Though it’s not one of their most famous songs, it’s become cult in some countries such as Vietnam where it plays everywhere at the end of the year or Lebanon where it’s traditionally the first song to be played at midnight after the countdown. Thank you Dereck for reacting to this gem!
Such a crisp and unmistakable voice. You know it's Agnetha when she sings. And what a lovely tune melodywise. It's played here in Sweden in lots of places over new year still!
'Oh yes, man is a fool, and he thinks he'll be okay. Dragging on feet of clay. Never knowing he's astray. Keeps on going anyway.' My favourite lyrics which encapsulate the hubris of humanity perfectly, and would sound angry if they weren't couched in beautiful melody.
I can't believe this song is 40 years old. It still holds up today. A timeless classic. Thank you so much for reacting to both versions of this song !!
Great reaction as always, for me it’s like reliving how I felt when I 1st listened to these songs. This song was the 1st track on side B and was followed by Our Last Summer which you have not reacted to yet but should, it is another Frida lead
Notice Agnetha’s phrasing in all 3 stanzas. She didn’t just breathe; those are strategically planned to achieve the continuity of the lyrics in chunks that are inter-connected.
Thank you Derek for your reaction to that wonderful track. They usually play that song in the radio where I live in Canada during the Holidays. Please react to either HEAD OVER HEELS (The Visitors) or MOVE ON (Arrival) those are among my favorite ABBA songs. Happy Holidays to all the ABBA fans out there.
This lovely song is practically the national anthem in Vietnam over the New Year period. Apparently it is played endlessly and everywhere there during the holiday season! Now, Dereck, all we need to end the year Abba-tastically is 'The Way Old Friends Do' from the same album. It's another end of year favourite, especially in Ireland and Scotland!
Well, aren't you spoiling the ABBA fans Dereck, not only the English and Spanish versions of Happy New Year / Felicidad but a cute little santa hat for us as well! I like the fact you don't pretend to know everything about ABBA and say what you see or feel. As a fan of far too many years, I would honestly say I'm still finding things out about the fab four and their music. You've done well doing virtually all the Super Trouper tracks in its 40 Anniversary year but I'm still waiting for your reaction to Our Last Summer which I think, from reactions Ive seen, you will love. Then I think you only have The Way Old Friends Do to complete that album (unless you want to give the two non-album tracks 'Elaine' and 'Put On Your White Sombrero' from those sessions a listen. With all ABBA tracks, both excellent).
Dereck I am 65 years old, I first heard ABBA in 1975 when stationed in germany at the age of 22. I am really happy to hear all their songs again. their music and songs will always stand the test of time. Dereck, when you are in you 60's and if you are still doing this please play all of their songs again to a new generation. (:
A huge amount can change in ten years, even one year. My mother passed in April from Parkinson's Disease; my aunt, last week from pneumonia; and my 95 year-old father is in the hospital with COVID (which he caught from one of his hospice health aides) and pneumonia. Try to cherish the good times you have with your loved ones while they're here.
Hi Dereck! I'm so glad you did this reaction and listened to both versions of this song. "Super Trouper" was the first album I bought with my own money, based on hearing "The Winner Takes It All" on the radio. Though the album was released toward the end of 1980, I didn't buy it until 1981; I was 12 years old, and I didn't know too much about ABBA. For some reason the copy I bought had "Felicidad" and "Andante, Andante" in Spanish. I didn't even realize English versions existed! I remember writing down the lyrics from the record sleeve and asking my classmate Anita to translate them for me. So that was the beginning of my ABBA journey, and I've been a fan ever since! 😁
4 talented people, 2 magnificent composers, 2 beautiful women with voices meant to be paired together. They were sent by some higher power to give us such endless joy. But like with this song, and most of their serious songs, they teach us about ourselves and the pain of change. They are remarkable.
This is one of my favorite ABBA songs, for so many reasons - mainly because of the melody, harmony, production quality, and lyrics. The video was filmed in an apartment in Stockholm that belonged to famous Swedish film director Lasse Hallström. An interesting historical note about the "what lies waiting down the line in the end of '89" reference in the song - As it turned out, the Berlin Wall fell in November 1989. Maybe not a prediction, but what a coincidence!
Greetings from Australia, Dereck 👋😃🐨🦘🦜✨🌈 Thank you for comparing both the English and Spanish versions in this reaction/review 😁🎶 I think one of the many reasons why this song stands out, 40 years later, is because: as well as sounding lush with the usual beautiful arrangements and voices, songs about the New Year are actually quite rare compared with Christmas songs. I remember throughout the ABBA years, fans always asked ABBA through fan clubs to write a Christmas song, but (instead) Björn & Benny chose a unique angle for the Festive Season focussing on New Year, and I'm glad that they did. And what's more, the melancholy that can go hand-in-hand with a calm/happy resolve in the change of the year (for many of us) works well with B&B's oft balance of happy and sad in one song. Nevertheless, B&B did end up writing a wonderful Christmas song in 2012 called 'Vinterhamn', sung here in Swedish, by Helen Sjöholm: ua-cam.com/video/e2jLf1Kwf70/v-deo.html Best warm wishes to you and your family, Dereck, for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 🎶🎅✨🎄🎉🎈

Feliz Navidad! (I always wanted to say or write that to someone, but I don't know anyone from a Spanish-speaking country. I like this phrase for Merry Christmas best, maybe because of the song but I also think because of the beautiful sound of the words.)
It was filmed in director’s home Lassie Hällström , director of all their videos but two of them , director of ABBA the movie and Oscar winning director for some American films afterwards . It was just Agnetha , a fake Björn was at the window. No after the album Gracias por la Música they included 2 Spanish versions on each the super trouper album and the visitor as album . The compilation called ABBA oro included the Spanish versions of gracias por la musica album , 2 from the super trouper , another 2 from the visitors plus an unreleased Ring Ring in Spanish version from 1973 to totalize 15 songs in Spanish
@Marvin Morawski I agree completely. All ABBA's promo's were shot on very limited budgets and the window scene was shot at director Lasse Hallstroms flat. the video also used spare footage from the 'circus/party' shoot for the Super Trouper album (other bits crop up in the spanish version Felicidad) and the rest of the video was shot in the Polar offices.

This song composed by Björn and Benny and with AVICII "We write the story" for the Eurovision 2013 festival is a master piece and it sounds very ABBA !!
I love that you've reacted to both versions and I agree with you about the spanish one, it seems happier for some reason. Abba had the ability to turn what it seems a sad song into a happy one and this one is a proof of that. It starts slow but at the chorus it just elevates your soul. I still prefer the english version too because of the lyrics in english are better than their translation to the spanish. I believe you have mistaken Bjorn for Benny Dereck. Bjorn is the one with Agnetha by the window and I believe you said the opposite. Great reaction Dereck!!! Nothing better that ending the year with an Abba song

In answer to your question about 5 mins in - it was the start of side B of the album - the ending was Lay Your Love leading into the Way All Friends Do..... still I do agree that it can be seen as a good closer. Still looking forward to your reaction to Our Last Summer. 8-) Please keep up the great work Derrick.
Oh but we can't disagree that "The Way Old Friends Do" is the ultimate way to close out this era of ABBA, and honestly the Super Trouper album did kind of close out a HUGE era of ABBA..who knew the darker times that were ahead for the group!
When i have been asked what is it about ABBA that gets me ,i have to think hard, for me it is the story of the song ,then add the voices and music and well what is not to like.
The Spanish version of ‘When All Is Said And Done’ is a fun one to watch. ‘No Hay A Quien Culpar’, is almost identical to the English one, apart from Frida’s drastically different hair style!
Gosh they sang & recorded _ in _ swedish..Norwegian..finish...German. English. Japanese...south American Spanish..french..dutch...truly multi lingual... ABBASOLUTLY fantastic !..🌈💚🎈🕺💃💕💕🐝
Now that you told, "Happy New Year" would be the perfect closing track for the album (I guess it is actually the first track from the B side - my mind may be tricking me). The actual last song from "Super Trouper" is "The Way Old Friends Do" - which is also another track practically MADE for album closure, and a very dear of mine, always brings me tears.
Yes Dereck a fab song to listen to when a new year begins, i wish you a nice cristmas and a better new year with your lovedones, greetings from Benjamin from the Netherlands 🥳🥳🥳
This was their farewell to the party, the band and their romantic relationships- this one always make me cry, it was the end of the ABBA era❤ You should come to Stockholm and you should came in June or December, best time to see our traditions. And you must give us a head's up when you do👍 You see Benny Andersson about in Stockholm. Agneta lives on the island Ekerö and stays there, Annifrid lives in Mallorca and Switzerland so she is not that much around either. Björn is an entrepreneur, working a lot for his beautiful native town Västervik and he's not much out and about either. Swedish respect privacy so they are not approached by Swedish, no celebrities are.
I can´t remember one new years eve since 1980 without listening to Happy New Year. And so it will be this year. Thanks a lot for reacting to both versions. And by the way....Björn & Benny did not do any backing vocals on this. There are just these two magical voices of Agnetha & Frida, that sometimes sound like many vocals were added.
The videos were shot between 3rd and 8th October 1980 so 40 Years ago. The Party scenes that also appear in the Super Trouper / Felicidad videos were all filmed on the 3rd October at Europa Film Studios, Tappvägen 24, Stockholm - with the circus performers being replaced by balloons in the Happy New Year videos, Different footage appears in all 3 videos. This same evening they shot their album sleeve. Different footage appears in all 3 videos. In the apartment shot its Bjorn standing by the window. The footage of Björn and Agnetha was taken in Director Lasse Hallström's old Stockholm apartment in Karlavägen. The close-up singing shots (in the pink/purple/blue shiny suits) were filmed in the Polar Music offices, Baldersgatan 1, Stockholm, Sweden as were the images that show Agnetha & Frida and Bjorn & Benny spinning around while singing the chorus. In actual fact the couples were standing in plant pots on wheels and were being turned round and round by the crew.
The guy Frida takes the hat from is Michael B Tretow, the guy behind their iconic studio sound, and also a hilarious novelty song musician in his own right ("Hubba hubba zoot zoot" is one of his).
After all these years I still want that apartment! Lol ABBA never released a Christmas album and this is the only song close to Christmas they ever did (as a group). And of course ABBA would do a holiday song that was happy and sad at the same time ✌️
Yes ABBAs videos are often mixes of various other videos, but not this one, this is one piece as far as I can say...and its probably the best new years eve song out there as far as Im concerned...
Now as far as I know (don't quote me on this) the Super Trouper album was recorded without Super Trouper track yet to be written or recorded with another track Put On Your White Sumberio (Frida lead vocal) going to be on the album. With Super Trouper yet to materialise in any shape or firm, Im guessing Happy New Year was gonna be the first single with a music video attached. But then out of the blue Super Trouper materialised & an obvious blockbuster hit with Happy New Year now shoved to one side (as a single at least but standout album teack) with footage fimed for the from Happy New Year video used on the Super Trouper video also, while the weakest track Put On Your White Sumbrio omitted from the album but on the Super Trouper reissue cd as bonus track.
Like 'Andante Andante' , 'Felicidad' was thought in Spanish initially to fit rhymes, voices, and music. Another song made in this way was 'Sleeping through my fingers" from the visitors album.
Great Reaction thank you! I noticed that ABBA's "The Last Video" from 2004 was in the suggested videos to watch next for both versions. I think you should, it would be a great end of year Mash-Up of all your reactions so far! xxx

@@cuffzter My Nordic brother, we could still join forces and become unstoppable. The Swenland ice hockey team would be akin to the Soviet-era Red Machine.
Suggestions for next ABBA songs - "Another town, another train" (earlier stuff with Bjorn on lead vocals+already trademark harmonies+great melody - already very ABBA but with late 60s sensibility), beautiful "Dance (While the music still goes on)" with unusual structure+key changes, heavenly ballad "My love, my life", "I've been waiting for you" with great very emotional melody and, may be, one of their earlier hit songs "Ring Ring". cheers.
Hi dude!! This song sums up Christmas for me.. Hopefully we will have a better new year ahead!! Happy Christmas derek and your family!! Liked your reaction!!..
I noticed that in most ABBA songs in Spanish you hear the voices more (it’s like the sound is more naked and the instrumental is more silent). You hear it clearly in When all is said and done when you compare the English and the Spanish version: both are wonderful but they are pretty different while being the same exact song.
Dear Dereck, about the lyrics : Who can say what we'll find, What lays waiting down the line At the end of eighty-nine? Guess what happened at the end of eighty-nine! The communist block collapsed, the Berlin Wall came down, and the Soviet Union was on her last leg before dissolving. If you wonder what this has to do with the song, I tell you that this song is NOT a New Year song. The whole thing with the end of the New Year Party and the Happy New Year wishes is a metaphor. The song's lyrics reflect the anguish and fear the Swedish people experienced in the summer of 1979 when the Swedish coast guard detected Soviet nuclear submarines in the Swedish archipelago in their territorial waters. The people felt as if the good times were over. It was the height of the cold war. Their mood drastically changed. This is reflected in the first verse: No more champaign and the fireworks are through, Here we are, me and you, feeling lost and feeling blue. The chorus expresses their hope: May we all have a vision now and then Of a world where every neighbor is a friend.
Gimme! Gimme! (Dame! Dame! Dame!), o When All is Said and Done (No Hay a Quién Culpar), en esas dos se nota mucho, y a mí particularmente, me gustan mucho más las versiones en castellano por eso, realmente la instrumentación suena mejor, al menos es mi percepción... Gracias Dereck!!!
I'm a bit late to this party, (pun intended), but this song has a very, 'cold light of day', feel to it, as in the morning of New Years' Day, (or even just after midnight when the party is closing up), and there's that feeling as you realise Christmas and all the other festivities are pretty much over and you have the sudden sense that it's only a couple more days before you have to go back to the grindstone of what is ordinary, everyday life, whether it be school or work. The melancholy of knowing time moves on, with some of what you wanted to remain having to be left behind.
Hi Derek, Merry X-Mas to you, may many more reaction videos from you will follow in 2021, MAYBE we will get a chance to see you react on the new Abba songs;-) And yes, you hear strings and sounds from Bennys famous Yamaha GX-1 Synthesizer-Organ. The State-of-the art Synthesizer built from 1973 to 1978. It is said to have cost the equivalent of todays 320 000 Dollar value and only a dozend or so machines were shipped outside of Japan.

This is how I felt when I was 10 years old and saying goodbye to the 70’s.
again i sat in my room and played my record and just cried at there voices ,
I first heard "Felicidad" when I got the Mas Oro CD in the mid 90's, just so good!!!
Merry Christmas Dereck and thanks for all your ABBA reactions this year. You’ve shone a light on a dark year. Let’s hope 2021 is a Happy New Year.
Sickly melancholic. Masterpiece, Dereck.
A classic. The harmonies are just beautiful
Marvelous Abba!!!
Nice classic review and reactions...great...😁😊😀🤩💛💙💖
Two great versions of this classic. Happy new year! 🎉🎊
Love the ABBA reactions, and cute outfit you got on 😉
As usual, love your reactions to Abba! So many more songs to react to. Love your Santa hat!
top 5 Christmas song ever!!!!
When i have been asked what is it about ABBA that gets me ,i have to think hard, for me it is the story of the song ,then add the voices and music and well what is not to like.
Our last summer is brilliant to
The Spanish version of ‘When All Is Said And Done’ is a fun one to watch. ‘No Hay A Quien Culpar’, is almost identical to the English one, apart from Frida’s drastically different hair style!
Gosh they sang & recorded _ in _ swedish..Norwegian..finish...German. English. Japanese...south American Spanish..french..dutch...truly multi lingual... ABBASOLUTLY fantastic !..🌈💚🎈🕺💃💕💕🐝
I have to say that their spanish its perfect😍
Now that you told, "Happy New Year" would be the perfect closing track for the album (I guess it is actually the first track from the B side - my mind may be tricking me).
The actual last song from "Super Trouper" is "The Way Old Friends Do" - which is also another track practically MADE for album closure, and a very dear of mine, always brings me tears.
This song is too good, to hear it just at New Years Day :-D
Una de mis canciones favoritas!!!
Yes Dereck a fab song to listen to when a new year begins, i wish you a nice cristmas and a better new year with your lovedones, greetings from Benjamin from the Netherlands 🥳🥳🥳
ABBA in Spanish is HEAVEN!!!!! You should check out the Spanish version of Slipping Through My Fingers you will absolutely melt
A great observation Derek. You've done it again!
Thank you Dereck! Both versions too. Yay! ❤️
This was their farewell to the party, the band and their romantic relationships- this one always make me cry, it was the end of the ABBA era❤
You should come to Stockholm and you should came in June or December, best time to see our traditions. And you must give us a head's up when you do👍
You see Benny Andersson about in Stockholm.
Yep! Filmed in an apartment in Stockholm, in the home of the video director Lasse Hallström (he has made som great movies too).
💜💜💜. Happy New Year to all!! 🌍🌏🌎
I recently read, that it was the apartment of Lasse Hallström, where they made this video.
We want Move on and The way old friends do in the next year😉
After all these years I still want that apartment!
Listen to THE WAY ALL FRIENDS DO from the Super Trouper album it's brilliant
Yes! One of my favourites.
It still breaks me that this is more than 40 years old - but it feels the same way that I am!
Abba has a song to all moments and in all languages. A todos los deseo "felicidad" y un saludo, Derek.
they are brilliant!))). p what's yr fav track!)))
Another song made in this way was 'Sleeping through my fingers" from the visitors album.
it is Bjørn who is looking outside the window 🤣
Diamond !!!! 💎💎😍😍😍
😂😁Björn is the one looking out the window,,,, not Benny. Lol
Great Reaction thank you! I noticed that ABBA's "The Last Video" from 2004 was in the suggested videos to watch next for both versions. I think you should, it would be a great end of year Mash-Up of all your reactions so far! xxx
Thanks for the Spanish version - never heard it before.
Such a Nordic way to celebrate: regret, melancholy and just a dollop of jubilance.
Perhaps in Finland but certainly not in Sweden😄
@@andersbackstrom4633 Perhaps we're even gloomier than you - might be the Slavic influence that started to seep in when YOU LOT gave us to Russia in 1809.
@@harripalomaki8796 Good grief, are you still being salty about that? You had your chance to come back in 1917 but you decided to walk your own path and good for you. Though I do agree with you about the melancholic happiness. Its something about it being dark half the year.
@@cuffzter My Nordic brother, we could still join forces and become unstoppable. The Swenland ice hockey team would be akin to the Soviet-era Red Machine.
@@harripalomaki8796 True, but then you wouldn't have the enjoyment of beating us/seeing us lose ;) (I hear that is a favorite pasttime in Finland)
I agree. I love both versions, but the Spanish version has a special quality.
Suggestions for next ABBA songs - "Another town, another train" (earlier stuff with Bjorn on lead vocals+already trademark harmonies+great melody - already very ABBA but with late 60s sensibility), beautiful "Dance (While the music still goes on)" with unusual structure+key changes, heavenly ballad "My love, my life", "I've been waiting for you" with great very emotional melody and, may be, one of their earlier hit songs "Ring Ring". cheers.
Another pop group that recorded in both English and Spanish was The Captain and Tennille.
Hi dude!! This song sums up Christmas for me..
Hopefully we will have a better new year ahead!!
Happy Christmas derek and your family!!
Liked your reaction!!..
YAY..! Thanks Dereck - LOVE IT xx
There is a slight difference in the mixing of the instrumentals. You hear the synths more in the Spanish version, especially at the end of the song.
I noticed that in most ABBA songs in Spanish you hear the voices more (it’s like the sound is more naked and the instrumental is more silent). You hear it clearly in When all is said and done when you compare the English and the Spanish version: both are wonderful but they are pretty different while being the same exact song.
Dear Dereck,
about the lyrics :
Who can say what we'll find,
What lays waiting down the line
At the end of eighty-nine?
This is reflected in the first verse:
No more champaign and the fireworks are through,
Here we are, me and you,
feeling lost and feeling blue.
The chorus expresses their hope:
May we all have a vision now and then
Of a world where every neighbor is a friend.
Gimme! Gimme! (Dame!
Derek still not heard ABBA..( So Long!...!!.) ca Mon man !) xx
But it has to be the version from the 'Made in Sweden For Export' TV special!!
@@synchronicityman9062 yeah both are v good
“Happy new year/May we all have our hopes/Our will to try/If we don’t we might as well lay down and die/You and I”
That verse just destroys me.
this group can sing so you listen - Agnetha and Anni - Frid is amacing and the lead by Agnetha . . . .
Hi Derek,
Merry X-Mas to you, may many more reaction videos from you will follow in 2021, MAYBE we will get a chance to see you react on the new Abba songs;-)
And yes, you hear strings and sounds from Bennys famous Yamaha GX-1 Synthesizer-Organ. The State-of-the art Synthesizer built from 1973 to 1978. It is said to have cost the equivalent of todays 320 000 Dollar value and only a dozend or so machines were shipped outside of Japan.
Probably even more worth than that. It was also fully restored so now it sounds even better than when it was new.
