I've always been blown away by Kempff's Beethoven and Schubert. But as more and more of his Liszt recordings come to the surface, it's clear he really did have a sense for Liszt. And this piece is truly one of Liszt's masterpieces.
What a find! And in such good sound, as well. Better-sounding, in fact, than most of the records he made for DG. DG had the stars and the artwork and I don't doubt they had the best microphones and mixing desks. I don't think they knew how to use them, though.
He was a true artist ! Nobody today can play like this

Stunning recording - he seemed to really want to highlight the structure in this piece…I love Kempff - his playing so full of wonder and imagination
