Richter is the pianist who most inspires me. Theres a rather wonderful youtube peformance in which Gravilov is seated beside Richter ( turning pages ) , peforming the keyboard suite in D minor ( with variations )

Amazing juxtaposition of the two performances. Richter was only 35 at the beginning of 1951; he was 77 in May of 1992, over four decades later. There are three miracles here: Beethoven, young Richter, and old Richter.

I've always been blown away by Kempff's Beethoven and Schubert. But as more and more of his Liszt recordings come to the surface, it's clear he really did have a sense for Liszt. And this piece is truly one of Liszt's masterpieces.

Eine gute Ausgrabung! Schon in seinen relativ jungen Pianistenjahren eignet Richter sein einmaliger Sonatensinn, sein offenbar angeborenes Gespür für das Ganze. Alles ist Struktur und Linie. Dem ordnet er auch seine superbe Technik und sein begnadet differenziertes Einfühlungsvermögen unter. Nie verliert er sich in Details (wie heute ein Sokolov, ein Pletnev, ein Levit. So entsteht in seinem Spiel jene überirdisch zu nennende Wirkung, von der die Kollegen Rubinstein, Gould und Kissin so angetan waren und die Nikolai Lugansky "hypnotisch" nannte. Am Rande sei gefragt, welchen Flügel Richter in diesem Moskauer Konzert wohl benützte - einen Bechstein, einen Bösendorfer - wohlturnder Weise gewiss keinen Steinway...

What a find! And in such good sound, as well. Better-sounding, in fact, than most of the records he made for DG. DG had the stars and the artwork and I don't doubt they had the best microphones and mixing desks. I don't think they knew how to use them, though.

Possibly the greatest recording of the Liszt Transcendental Etudes, both on and off the record. Mazeppa is truly heroic.

I'm studying this suite, and this video is so interesting to help me to understand the parts of this music. I also listened to Amaral Vieira execution. He's a very good pianist too. I almost played the music to the end, it needs only the last part, that I think it is the Gigue. I already played the Gigue, but it is not good enough till now but I will study more.

Also the allegro and adagio of sonata nr. 11 are very impressive. The more I listen to this music the more beautiful it becomes. By the way fantastic sculptured head of Richter!

Wonderfully played by Richter. What a unique pianist he is! Beethoven and Richter are made for each other, so it seems. But the same can be said for quite a lot of other composers, which is proof of the extremely multitalented Richter. I love the allegretto of no 17, what a joyful, sparkling piece of music, but also the Bagatelles are little gems in my opinion. Thanks a lot for this upload, CC!

Ein Danke dieser klugen Zusammenstellung: Der Pianist mit des Komponisten vorletzter (und vielleicht schönster) Sonate (op. 110) im Zeitraum von 40 Jahren. Was hat sich geändert, was war da schon immer in Richters großartigem Beethovenspiel...? Es gibt übrigens ein vielleicht noch beredteres und ergreifenderes (Audio- und Video-) Zeugnis (auch auf youtube greifbar): sein Auftritt 1991 in einer seiner legendären Dezember-Soirees im Moskauer Puschkin-Museum, welches uns nochmal in dichtester Weise Richters singuläre Kunst zu Gehör bringt und vor Augen führt: Geradezu "hypnotisierend", wie sich sein potentieller Nachfahre Nikolai Luganski geäußert hat und wie schon vorher, neben Glenn Gould, vor allem Arthur Rubinstein in ähnlichen Worten Richters geschichtliche Ausnahmestellung auszudrücken versucht hat).

Всего вероятней, что запись произведена в музее-усадьбе Архангельское под Москвой, где действительно стоит старинный клавишный инструмент, а не в северном городе Архангельске (как написано). Там же он исполнил (и записал) весь цикл сюит совместно с пианистом Гавриловым на современных роялях.

22 Jahre später als Wilhelm Kempff in seiner märchenhaften Aufführung - , auch in Paris. Da kommt auch ein Sviatoslav Richter nicht hin, dafür aber demonstriert dieser Pianist erneut sein Spiel von Beethovenschem Logos (Dynamik, nicht erfragbarer Hintersinn und unerreichbarer Klavierkunst).
