great video! I was blissfully unaware of the Satellite Lovers hidden gem on my feed, and you enlightened, hope this video takes off as the other one grows as well🤝
I was just listening to Shugo Tokumaru, and this was in the related videos panel. I haven't heard of them before, but you make them sound interesting, and your presentation style is nice, so I will give both a go 😄
It's crazy how such AN AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL Album didn't get much recognition when it first came out. Timeless music will always find its way... just give it time :]
Okay…do y’all not listen to anything? Nothing about this band is unique? Almost all the sounds are borrowed from artists like Sade or numerous 60s bands or Donna Summer, just a dozen sounds repackaged for a Japanese audience but nothing unique. In fact, their co opting black music is a bit cringe. This whole trend is pure exoticism. It’s the same for city pop. It’s interesting to y’all when its not done by black people lol
@@loadishstone -shits on band people are enjoying -shits on listener as well -proceeds to insinuate that said listeners are racist on top of it go outside, people can be influenced by things, “co-opting” music isn't real
I guess a lot of people were recommended this album around the same time, I found it about a week or two ago and I absolutely love it. It’s generally so happy and bouncy
Cases such as this always make me a little sad thinking how many incredible bands all over the world have come and gone completely unnoticed by a broader public.
It should be a learnable moment for many people - there's great, obscure music out there being produced right now by artists who could really use the support, so go find it. But people are weirdly lazy when it comes to looking for music, so we need an alogrithm to do it for us.
Because people like comfort and don’t like going out of their comfort zones. More importantly, digital algorithms are really no different than the music gatekeepers of the day: it’s designed to keep you listening to similar shit. So for most people it’s hard to break out of that loop.
The fact that there are foreigners who enjoy Shibuya-kei is a strange but delightful thing for a Japanese person like me. I recently discovered this album through an algorithm, and I really liked it. from japan❤
I'm glad to hear that. It's true that the Japanese music biz was very dynamic in the 90s. I'm glad I was able to spend my youth in the 90s. I was able to find your channel thanks to the algorithm.
Literally every sound they produced was imitations of american genres from the three previous decades before them lol. You can almost name the influences track by track.
@@loadishstone that's kind of the point of shibuya-kei, it's the record collector's music genre. mixing samples and interpolations from different sources and styles is the basis of the genre, in a similar way to a lot of classic hip-hop.
My teacher got me into Pizzicato Five in the '90s! Back then at the record stores in America, Japanese music would just get put into a tiny "World Music" section regardless of genre, so finding out about things like Shibuya-kei was difficult. I'm really grateful that the Internet has allowed for so much more crossover.
Discovered the band about an hour ago and I’m now obsessed with them. I’m hoping all the new interest can one day get them available on streaming services
The youtube algorithm can be a beautiful thing. For me, Sons of 1973 is one of those albums that make you think "My life will be slightily different from now on" after listening to it. It just has such an immediate effect.
its amazing finding old music and reviving it, but its sad that we cant go back in time and give it the love it deserved and boost their careers to get them to keep going with their music career
Found them through algorithm. Sons of 1973 and BKLN are my two favorites. The best part is that these albums are so different between each other. Love this band and I hope they reunite or something soon.
I was recommended this exact album too and since listening to it, I've replayed it about a hundred times. I LOVE it. I've been trying to find their vinyl for a little while now and I haven't had any luck. 😭
I literally found them on my laptop doing summer school work and I find 70s/80s bands so interesting. I hopped on my pc to find more info on them but it was like they disappeared, not a single record of them but some old facebook links. It's so cool seeing others uncover stuff on lost bands, I love Jpop so much
I love this style of japanese music and this album of theirs was recommended for me on youtube a few days ago and I was genuinely curious about who they were. Now, the algorithm sends me your video, thats crazy lol. Anyway, thanks for the good work bro

Hidden gems like this are the reason why I love to listen and find music through UA-cam. I'm not sure how, but the algorithm just hits a really nice sweet spot for me in the way that other music apps don't.
Check out Mass of the Fermenting Dregs as an example of a 90s band getting a resurgence. They never really quit after fading out but for some reason they are catching on with western audiences as of late. Their US tour is selling out venues and they are my current favorite shoegaze style band.
I scrolled through my home page and just like you orange the album stood out I pressed it. First song is beautiful and I am a sucker for this type of music. The melody reminds me of the curious George movie theme song

Okay so check it I’ve been following as this has developed and I’ve been losing my mind about it. Someone uploaded a video titled acid jazz………in Japan - its a banger playlist - heres the thing smack dab middle of the playlist, how much I love you baby. As many of us did I fell in love with the track and started looking for more now at the time there were only 3 of their songs on youtube. One song off Music, Living night together uploaded like 12 years ago and, how much I love you baby uploaded on the channel “OUR FAVORITE SONGS” now this video had a bunch of comments from people in the acid jazz playlist in my same boat! I couldnt find this anywhere! So I went with the nuclear option and ordered a cd directly from Japan and 3 days before it arrived almeda the legend uploaded the albums and it has brought me so much joy to see how they’ve retroactively ‘exploded’ and share in this with yall!
UA-cam watch history indicates on Jun 19 I first viewed Music then Sons of 1973. I recall that UA-cam recommended Music, then I looked the band up on RYM and searched for the highest rated release "Sons of 1973".
I'll add that I listened to Sons of 1973 several times back then. So maybe I played some small role in the boost. Last few days I've been listening to Love Tambourines Alive repeatedly and enjoying it. That album playlist is hovering around 20k views but deserves to get launched too.

Its really impressive how all their albums are different genres but still very much the same feel, somehow. Kind of like the rolling Stones. Satellite Lovers are talented.
I was there when it was around 300k viewers, I got instantly hooked with best friend. it was so full of hope and joy that I now play it in the shower. the how much I love yo ubaby came on, and I couldn't be more addicted to this beautiful album. I even wanted to cover it in a video essay as well, but you have done an excellent job doing so :)
Thank you so much really glad you liked the video ❤ if you still make a video essay on them let me know I’d love to watch! how much I love u baby is a real banger it has been stuck in my head ever since
It would be cool if they were able to release a remastered digital version for a worldwide audience. They certainly got a lot of new fans through the UA-cam algorithm over a quarter century later.
I guessed youtube recommended it to me because I've been listen to some 80's city pop, and I follow a couple of japanese indie pop bands. What surprised me the most about this album, is how they used elements of 80's pop and funk the way current indie bands are using them these days, so it sounds like it was something from 2020's and not something from almost 30 years ago.
I was 13 in 1994, so I remember the music that was popular worldwide back then was very different from now, so I think their music was ahead of their time. This album would be a hit if it were released in these times and they would be touring at least in Japan.
"Best Friend" & "How Much I Love You, Baby" are my fave songs from Satellite Lovers. Like, I feel so happy and hopeful in life when I listen to those songs. ❤
Such a great video. I listened to Sons of 1973 a few weeks ago and I reaaaaally really loved it. It's so great more people are discovering it! If you haven't already listen to it, you should try the band COgeNdshE, they only have one album called "cogency" and it's awesome!
Jazz artist Ryo Fukui went through a similar algorithmic wave a few years back with his '70s album 'Scenery'. It resulted in several of his records getting fresh runs on vinyl. Sadly, he'd already passed away, but it was still heartening to see.
Hope you enjoyed the video! Let me know if you also found Satellite Lovers through the algorithm or if you knew about them beforehand.

it isnt now
@@acidmuert right they removed it wtfff
I guessed youtube recommended it to me because I've been listen to some 80's city pop, and I follow a couple of japanese indie pop bands. What surprised me the most about this album, is how they used elements of 80's pop and funk the way current indie bands are using them these days, so it sounds like it was something from 2020's and not something from almost 30 years ago.
So you also got recommended this banger?
When I listened to both albums I inmediately downloaded them, absolutely fantastic
I was 13 in 1994, so I remember the music that was popular worldwide back then was very different from now, so I think their music was ahead of their time. This album would be a hit if it were released in these times and they would be touring at least in Japan.
Ngl, we're hella blessed to be on the good side of the YT algo!
Me when I get random Japanese albums on my UA-cam Home page, it brightens up my day !
ongggg the first 10 secs nd i ws hooked bro. they're my new fav band :3
"Best Friend" & "How Much I Love You, Baby" are my fave songs from Satellite Lovers. Like, I feel so happy and hopeful in life when I listen to those songs. ❤
All 5 satellite lovers projects are amazing im so glad to have found them
Found it a week ago, it’s a real banger
Found the same video a few days ago and got hooked on the first song
Such a great video. I listened to Sons of 1973 a few weeks ago and I reaaaaally really loved it. It's so great more people are discovering it! If you haven't already listen to it, you should try the band COgeNdshE, they only have one album called "cogency" and it's awesome!
Oohhh just heard un deux trios this is some solid math rock! I’ll definitely listen to the rest of this album now! Thank you
Jazz artist Ryo Fukui went through a similar algorithmic wave a few years back with his '70s album 'Scenery'. It resulted in several of his records getting fresh runs on vinyl.
Sadly, he'd already passed away, but it was still heartening to see.
Having listened through the albums a few times it's nice to see some more info on the band
I wish this album was on vinyl
