@@FrenchtownMedia Hey man, nice! thx. What can you tell about the automap... I heard it is no longer controlling the DAW's and you have to go Mackie HUI instead, and all manually. HOw is it with you now? cheers
@@cesmcmyth sorry if I'm not much help on this topic, but I am still using an older version of mac os, choosing not to update. So automap in my case still works the same as it did in the video. I chose not to update because I was skeptical of all the problems occurring with plugins and didn't want to risk incompatibility issues and lose work on any projects.
I bought a used one 3 year's ago, the PW eventually started acting possessed Lol. Then when i took it a part and disable it, the drum pads would send cc1, MW. But i for sure would get a new one. The keys have a very nice feel, and with velocity, and one key AT. Also the arp is wicked. A win
Possessed LOL that's no good. I definitely love the arp's functionality and I'm no pianist but I do definitely feel a difference in these keys from other controllers I have used.
@@FrenchtownMedia Its because this controller has 'semi weighted' keys something which pianists would prefer. Fully weighted is the standard for digital Pianos. Nice video and wish I had discovered it before I decided to swap out my Impulse. Keep up the helpful videos 👍
Most definitely. Just keep in mind that it was made with Ableton in mind, so results may vary in terms of how it responds in other DAWs. Keys should work regardless though.
It is a great controller especially with its built in arpeggio and key zones but to be honest the thing is massive. I really like the Akai MPK Mini because of how small it is and still has pads knobs and keys
@@FrenchtownMedia thanks a lot for the quick answer. I'm deciding for which of those acquire to start composing music, your opinion is going to be of great help. 🙂
Absolutely! Also be sure to consider the software you’re using bc that has a lot to do with the right midi controller. I use ableton live and couldn’t live without my Push 2. Just something to consider. Good luck with your journey!!
Thanks for watching! I know that you can use it as a regular midi keyboard in logic but I'm not sure if you will have access to the tracks pan knobs and faders. Hope this helps! 🙂⛵
@@fabriziojee4716 Unfortunately this controller does not have that option. However, Ableton Live has a midi effect called chord that can accomplish the same thing. I would recommend a chain with the chord effect followed by the scale midi effect and then you can basically play all the chords in a specific scale by only playing one note. Hope this helps answer your question!
You definitely can. But I think all it would allow you to do is play your Yamaha as a midi keyboard through the impulse which may introduce a lot of input delay
@@FrenchtownMedia also it let me use all the keys on my psr with the impulse plugged in it adds more keys the pich and roll plus expression and sustain pedals work to it basically made the impulse a bigger keyboard I just had to turn the volume down so I didn't hear the sound coming out of the psr itself try it let me know what you think 😀
@@rockman49er thats awesome! I also just realized that depending on how many voices your midi instrument allows, you could have 2 people playing the same instrument at the same time. Could be pretty cool! I'll try this out
@@doonguitarlessons just scheduled the video to release this friday. I will update all my old novation impulse videos with a link to the new one. cheers!
I'm sorry if this is a super basic question, but is it possible to control all 16 inputs of the drum rack with the 8 pads? Do you do that by switching templates, or is there something within ableton itself that allows for that?
This is a great question. I don't think that the pads have much control over the different inputs, but I know that you can change the keys that they do trigger. It's a tedious process though having to change trigger keys while producing. I would recommend using the keys as switching octaves will give you the ability to trigger as many cells as your drum rack has available.
@@FrenchtownMedia thanks for answering! I configured two banks inside the Impulse for changing octaves in the same drum rack. Maybe you solved this in a more easy way. How you configured it? Just a knob asigned to octave changes?
Lately I have been using the keyzones that are built into the impulse and also ableton sampler has zones. Basically you can specify zones to trigger from your midi based on a selector. You can map that selector to a knob to change the selected zone. Set it up so that one zone is an octave lower. I have a video on ableton drum racks where I configure zones and a new in depth video for the impulse is scheduled to drop on Friday morning. Both of those should be able to accomplish what you are looking for and then some!
Yes I use automap for mine, I would also recommend making sure you have the impulse selected as the control surface, and also the input and output options next to the control surface selector.
Unfortunately, the main recording button on the impulse only controls the arrangement record button in ableton, however, there is a workaround. If you set the drum pads to clip launching mode on the Impulse, you can select a specific track, make sure it is record armed, and then launch an empty clip cell to begin recording a new clip. Hope this helps!
I think it has to do with the build quality as well as the different built-in midi features such as the pad's arpeggio and the separate midi channels available within the hardware itself.
Very useful info on this midi. I've had for years but never quite explored and you helped much!.
Glad I was able to help! It's a really fun piece of equipment to use, especially with Ableton! :)
