  • A few years ago friend of mine here on UA-cam, Bill Goudy, showed how to turn bluegill, into lobster! He was like an alchemist, turning lead into gold! It sure looked good. I wonder if I could do it too. But first, I need to catch some fish! See the fishing equipment used, information about the lake, the recipes and more below.
Bill Goudy’s channel is here: / billgoudy
Bill Goudy’s poor man’s lobster video is here: • Campfire cooking - Poo...
    --------------------------------------
    Pan Fried Asparagus
    Ingredients
    ¼ cup butter (one-half stick)
    2 tablespoons olive oil
    1 teaspoon coarse salt
    ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
    3 garlic cloves, minced
½ Lb. fresh asparagus spear, trimmed (1 pound before trimmed)
2 or 3 TBS of fresh grated Romano cheese
    Directions
Melt butter in a skillet over medium-high heat.
Stir in the olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Cook garlic in butter for a minute, but do not brown.
Add asparagus, and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, turning asparagus to ensure even cooking.
Add Romano cheese before serving while asparagus is still hot.
    ---------------------------------------
    Poor Man’s Lobster
    Ingredients:
1 pound of fish fillets, like bluegill, bass, yellow perch, cut into 1to 2 inch pieces
1 bag of McCormack’s Shrimp & Crab Boil
1 TBS of Old Bay Seasoning
    ½ stick of butter, melted
    Cocktail sauce (optional)
    Instructions:
In a large sauce pan place one quart of water.
Add one bag of McCormack’s Shrimp & Crab Boil
Add one tablespoon of Old Bay and one lemon, quartered
Bring to a boil, then add the pound of fish.
Cover and cook on medium-high for 3 minutes. (Don’t cook beyond 4 minutes!)
Remove the seasoning bag and the lemon wedges quickly.
Remove the fish with a strainer or spider.
Serve hot with melted butter, or chill and serve with cocktail sauce.
THE BOAT: a Bass Hunter ordered from Bass Pro Shops about 12 years ago. They no longer sell it. Also, this model is no longer available, but newer models like it are still sold. Check here: www.sportsmansguide.com/produc...
THE SPINNING REEL: Pflueger Trion GX-5. This model is no longer made.
The spinning rod is a tiny Daiwa SMC401ULFS Spinmatic-C SpinRod (4- Feet, Ultra Light, 1 Piece, 1-4 pound line test recommended). It can be found on Amazon, Fish USA, and other places.
THE LINE: SpiderWire, Ultracast, Invisi-Braid in 10 pound test, 2 pound monofilament equivalent.
THE LAKE: is called Lake Ketchabigwon (named by native Americans). It is almost 6 acres and is located in NE Ohio. It sits on 37 acres of property. The lake is private.
FISH IN THE LAKE: largemouth bass, bluegill, white crappie, black crappie, yellow perch, channel catfish, and grass carp.
WHY KEEP SMALL BASS: Biologists conducted an electroshock survey of the lake. They found too many small, stunted bass. Their advice was to remove all bass under 12 inches, and to release the bigger ones. This rule is usually the opposite in large public lakes.
WHY I DON’T FISH FOR CATFISH: I’m not knowledgable about how to fish for them. Rigging for them is confusing to me. Also, I don’t enjoy sitting and waiting for a bite. It seems boring and is a challenge to video.
LARGEST FISH CAUGHT: The biggest was a grass carp I hooked and managed to beach. It weighed over 30 pounds. Next was a channel cat (accidentally caught while bass fishing) of 10 pounds. The largest crappie was 14¾ inches and weighed 2 LBS and 1 oz. I did not measure the largest bluegill, but it was at least 10 inches. Finally, my largest bass was 6¾ pounds caught here at Lake Ketchabigwon.
VIDEOGRAPHY: The principal camera is an iPhone 6s Plus on a tripod. An iPhone 5s is used as a close-up, counter-top camera when cooking. It is mounted on a small tripod. I use a Rhode microphone indoors to help lessen the echo. The video is edited on a 2013 MacBook Pro using Final Cut Pro X.

You absolutely nailed another one my friend I have two things to say.
1)i've obviously live a jaded life because until I met you I thought crappie was the best tasting fish out there.
    2) I will be writing your name in on the ballot when I vote for President this year. I think we need somebody with your skill set! 😜

Hi Dave! Bluegills are delish! I don't care as much for the taste of crappie for some reason, but I do eat them too. 😊 If you do try this recipe, don't cook the fish longer than 3½ minutes. Keep in mind that the lobstery taste is directly proportional to the amount butter you manage to apply to the bluegill. I'm so glad I could bring back good memories of your dad for you. Thanks a million for watching! All the best to you!

Isn't this a great time of year to go for musky? I hope so! You ought to show us your cabins up there on a UA-cam video! I'd love to see your set up! Sounds like great fun! Best of luck on your fishing! Thanks a million for watching my videos!

Hi Alcsaar! I know that I should do more taste tests but when Ms. Cheeks is with me, it's difficult. She wants to get on with dinner and I can't blame her. UA-cam is my hobby, not hers. Love the asparagus side!! Our poor man's lobster was always made from northern pike. And I think it was just boiled without spices, cooled and dipped in a prodigious amount of melted butter. Thanks for bringing back those delicious memories! Great video as always!! 💞☺

Hi Laurice! Yes!!! Several of the fake lobster recipes I found online were for northern pike!! I didn't realize they had northerns in MD! Maybe you lived somewhere farther north at one time? I did discover that the tastiness of the fish increased in proportion to the amount of butter that adhered to it! LOL! It wouldn't have fooled a food critic, but was certainly yummy enough for me! Thank you so much for watching my videos, and thank you especially for your interesting, kind comment my friend!

It's a good thing Ms Lulu couldn't make it. Being a food critic I think she would have definitely uncovered the ruse.

John, this was both an entertaining fishing show as well as a wonderful faux lobster boil! The little Gulp minnow (I have some in my crappie lure box) worked quite well on the 1/32d jig head. One of these days I'm going to Lake E with Lorraine and stock up on some bluegills, too, and hope the crappie are on the banks as they are really good from that lake. The asparagus (same singular or plural) was terrific and, yes, Italian demanded the Romano! Hope Lulu had a good trip to NYC and gives a good review of Che Abysmal Abode when she gets back LoL. Great show and great recipe! Hi to Jeanne. Don & Brenda

Hi Don! LOL!! "Che Abysmal Abode" is my place at the lake for sure! As for the fishing, I couldn't miss with the tiny Gulp minnow! Those little fry imitations really work swell! I noticed something interesting about this fake lobster: the tastiness increased in direct proportion to how much butter adhered to it! LOL! The asparagus cried out for grated cheese and I'm glad I complied because it was wonderful! I wish you great success in hunting bluegill and crappie at Lake E! I'll look forward to your video! Thank you for watching my videos, and thank you especially for your good words my friend! All the best to you, Brenda, and sister, Lorraine! --- John & Jeanne

I love the asparagus and you can never go wrong with cheese! Speaking of cheese, I made the cauliflower last week. It was a cheesy success! In fact, I am making another pan of it to take to a family dinner tomorrow. It is too bad that Ms. Lulu couldn't come to your "real" lobster dinner, but you may be right about her knowing it was fake. I bet one of the classes they have to take in food critic school is telling the difference between fake and the real thing. I know it is almost the weekend and time for another installment of Juanelo and Ms. Cheeks, but enjoy the rest of the week until we see you again. Hugs to you both.

Juanelo1946 I was very late watching your video so you may not have been looking at comments. The second batch of cheesy cauliflower was even better than the first and my family members who tend to eat low carb loved it. Maybe the next time you make your fake lobster you could brag about it to Ms. Lulu. You know us ladies are always looking for a bargain. If we can get something just as good for a better price, then we jump right on it. Now, I have to get busy watching videos so I can watch your newest one.

Hi Jedi! Don't cook the bluegill over 3½ minutes, and they'll be great! Don't skimp on the butter either! LOL! Thanks so much for watching my videos my friend! Thanks especially for the kind comment!

Hi John! To be totally honest with you, I think I would rather have bluegill over lobster. Lobster is ok, but I much prefer other seafood over it. It's so expensive, and bluegill taste better, so I'm really liking your recipe. The name Bill Goudy sounds so familiar to me. Did he use to right an article in one of the outdoors magazines. I remember years ago someone with the last name Goudy had a monthly column in the magazine. Just curious!

Hi Rus!! I'm a bluegill lover too! To make this fake lobster best, I would cook it only 3 minutes! It cooks so fast in boiling water. And you don't want it to be dry. I noticed too that the tastiness of the fish increased in direct proportion to the amount of butter that adheres to it! LOL!! Wasn't there a sportscaster named Bill Goudy too? Now you have me thinking, yes, that name is familiar! I put a link to his channel in the description notes. But I don't think he is famous outside of his UA-cam circle! LOL! He is a star in my book though! He inspired this recipe! Thank you for watching my videos, and thank you especially for your nice comment my friend!

Hi Gonzo! Who would of thought you could get anything like lobster from fish in my pond! LOL! But the goodness of the fish was directly proportional to the amount of butter that adhered to it! YUM! Thanks a million for watching my videos, and thanks even more for the kind comment my friend!

Hi Julia! Side dishes for me lately have been healthy dishes because they usually mean vegetables! I used to HATE vegetables, but we live and learn! Baked carrots sound exquisite!! MMM!!! Maybe some day you'll do a vegetable on your show. Then we'll see if your views go up or down! LOL! Try these easy asparagus! You'll love them!
