Excellent review. I just bought one for $17 and am quite happy with it. I did notice the gain issue, but at least now I know that it's a common problem and not just a flaw on my unit.
Thank you for the review. I just picked up one of these from TEMU for $17.99. I will be using it as a studio monitor controller from an 8 channel mixing board for my speakers and headphones, in an internet radio studio, not recording. All of the good things you said about this unit will suffice my need of use. I'm glad i found this. Most active studio monitor controllers are on the expensive side.
I just got mine recently, and here are some of the pros and cons. If you want to use it as a usb connector for your recording, it does it's job really well, but since the design is simplistic and minimalistic and its only features are gain and volume control I would suggest to pair it with a multi-channel audio mixer or a soundcard that has vocal effects on it like reverb.
Great review, very helpful, like the idea it has 3.5v for small Condenser Microphone, as you said very hard to find on a budget mixer, just ordered one from AliExpress for £11.
Got this for under $20 on temu. Perfect for just chatting on discord or meetings. Did need to get a cheap mic booster for my rode podmic. took a chance on a $10 one and it gave me +25 db of gain i needed. If i knew it couldn’t handle the podmic as well, I would’ve just got the fifine sc1.
Good review. I worked in electronics for 40 years. It would seem like a schematic of the thing could help to make some changes to the design to fix the shortcomings. Possibly add decoupling caps to the A2D section (Try to understand where the noise is coming from), add an external power connector, tweak a cap/resistor value or two, if that can be done, to give more gain. Beef up the step up voltage circuit to provide a higher voltage for the mic. This isn't rocket science.
Thank you for the very informative video! I especially perked up for the gain, frequency and phase response measurements. I'm thinking they probably put a dent into my hope of it being able to serve as a super low budget interface for basic loudspeaker measurements? Or maybe there's a chance it can be compensated with a calibration curve? Since reference and measurement would be run through the same chip, relative level and phase measurements might not be off the table either? So many questions. Looking forward to part 2!
Hi Chris, Great review! 1)Thank you, I saw where you gave advice that it can be used as standalone by using a wall wart. I’m going to do that instead of plugging into a computer. 2)Question: Can I use XLR Plug-in wireless microphone Transmitter (plug into the XLR microphone) & Receiver (plug into this audio interface XLR Input 1)? I want to use my microphone for interviews at symposiums, conferences and bookstores. Do you think this will work? Will the sound come out of my microphone this way? Thank you
great review, thanks I bought the same one a couple of weeks ago. Mine has another button net to the Headphones with down for Direct Monitor and up for PC. Whatever positions of these buttons and settings in Ardour I cannot get the PC playback to go through the headphones via the interface. I only get the PC playback when connecting the headphones directly to the PC out. That works but with a lot of latency. Do you have any tips on that?
Nice video, I have a question for you about the Loop Back. I do video interviews and use Streamyard (It's like Zoom) to do so. I use a Behringer Q502 mixer (which I love) but I have an issue when both me and my guest speak at the same time. One of us is muffled and I cannot figure out how to solve it. I'm assuming it's because the guest's voice is coming from Streamyard, through my mixer and then back to Streamyard. If I had this device, according to what I'm understanding from your video, I could stop the guest's voice from going back to Streamyard, but I can still hear them? In other words, only my voice would be going back to Streamyard. (I call it a reverse mix-minus,) Is that what the Loop Back thing does?
Hi! Id like to know if it can be powerd with a usb phone charger (an iPhone charger for example) and use it as a stand alone mixer/preamp. I need a cheap but decent preamp to conect a sm57 to guitar pedals, so that the noise floor isnt to high when playing sax. Thanks in advance and congratulations for the great review and testing.
@@Chris_Grossman Thanks a lot for the quick response. I’ll give it a go and come back with my thoughts . (It may take a couple of months for the product to arrive to Uruguay though)
Hello Sir, I want to know if i use this mixer with my studio monitor speaker by using 2 trs cable and plugging it into the main output port of audio interface, Will it improve the audio output quality as compared to directly connecting it to the PC.
Great review. I've got a question, do we get a balanced signal through the TRS connector? The XLR is certainly balanced, but if we connect the stereo P10 (TRS), do we get the same signal? The cable would be XLR from my pedal to the stereo TRS. I want to install this mixer in the pedalboard, to power it with a power bank, but I need a balanced signal and the XLR connector are large and bother me aesthetically. Thanks for the potential response.
Hi Chris could I bring my big analog mixer into the line inputs to go to computer, you can get rid of all the noise and breathing in on your voice over with the basic noise reduction on in obs, the expander and limiter is extremely good too.. 44.1khz is standard for my radio ads 48 is a bonus.
Quite simple. Your V8 soundcard will be connected to your PC. Teyun will only serve as a mixing console, while the V8 is of course the soundcard. Get the music/instrument cord of the V8, into one of the main outputs of teyun. With the help of a 3.5mm port into a TRS plug, you'll achieve this. Regulate the volume, you're good to go.
I bought this recently, and after seeing this video I measured my phantom power voltage at 45V (it had to charge for a while). Would I be able to use the phantom power at 45V for a decent/acceptable result? I might have a slightly different model, my push-down buttons are hard (not soft like they look in the video) and rounded.
Can I plugin my Yamaha E373 into this? It has quarter inch "stereo" output jack.. so I will need a cable to convert it to XLR? What cheap microphone should I get for this? The Behringer XM8500 is about 3 times the price of this Q12, but that is alright if it is value for the money. Checking out the BM800 review at the moment.
No you do not need an XLR cable. I have never seen used a Yamaha E373 keyboard. The manual says it has a 1/4" stereo headphone output. I would get a "1/4 trs cable" from Amazon. That cable would go from the headphone output into the 1/4" input (in the center of the dual purpose XLR). If you keep the master volume low enough on the keyboard, this should work.
Im curious, what happens if you do try to use the phantom power (35v instead of 48v) and a corresponding mic? Will the audio quality just be really low, will it be unusable, will it damage the mic, or maybe something else?
Chris I need your help. Mine works fine with windows but I'm getting a weird noise /feedback when I use it with Mac. Any advice ? I have a 2013 imac and a mid 2009 imac same issue with both. Nasty feedback
Hi Chris, thanks for the great review, i have a noticed that little buzz noise in the background, is that something that can be fixed in post? I wanna get one for using it only for some talkhead videos. I am plannimg to use to for an XLR dynamic mic (fduce sl40- gain:-54db). Cheers
You mentioned a wish for the 3.5mm plugin power to be in the 5v to 10v range. Are there any devices which provide that much voltage? Most of the devices that I've tested are in the 3v to 5v range. My Behringer 302 mixer, provides about 4.5v, which seems to be enough for every electret mic that I've tried.
@@Chris_Grossman It's a pity that the Teyun falls down on certain aspects of its performance. There aren't many USB mini mixers that offer two XLR inputs.
