It's like he's literally narrating from a scrip made for the reel, there's actually no personal account of any particular detail of his entire childhood, all he's saying are the typical thing that people play to pretend to. Nothing happens in a vacuum, and the father is not owning anything, "Jeff" now was an entire Angel and only was "off" when OTHER people seem him doing so, never in from of their parents. come on. He never laid a hand on him and he regrets it? Really, cause everyone got spanked at least once back in the day. He's lying and hiding the truth like a good Narcissist parent do.
ive read his book and youre right, in this interview he barely says anything but in the book he admits to helping jeff decompose animals and save their bones etc
It is absolutely ridiculous to expect Lionel Dahmer to apologize for what his son did!! Any of us who have raised children to adulthood know that we can’t control the acts of adult children!! Jeffrey himself “owned it” with regard to his acts. He specifically said “It wasn’t anyone else’s fault. It was me. I was the problem!” So why do people want to blame Jeffrey’s parents for what he did?? I’m a professional who has been in the “people business “ for many years . Dr. Phil, you should know better than to shift the blame!!🤔
Asking for the victims to forgive Jeffrey is not fair. He didn't pay for what he did. He boasted about what he did showing no remorse causing another inmate to kill him!
He wanted to die. That's why he taunted the other inmates, so that they would kill him. He could have served his whole sentence in segregation, but he wanted to go to general population even when everyone told him not to do that or he would be killed. But that's what he wanted.
@@alexlazzerly3677 True. And people that refuse to forgive are doing a dis-service to themselves. Because forgiveness is an extremely healing thing to do. It's not easy but its very important. Forgiveness doesn't have to do anything for the perpetrator. You don't even need to tell that person. Forgiveness is entirely about the victim getting to move on.
Seeing that old footage of J D childhood hurts...like how could an innocent looking kid could've turned into that bastard, how's humanity going to end up like... how would it be if his father didn't encourage that behaviour thinking it was inoffensive, would the victims have a change to be alive if he would have gotten help in the past? These type of things are just so unbelievable
absolutely agree. i wonder why Jeff's mom has not been interviewed - I blame her more that anyone for Jeffs demise she just abandoned Jeff Lionel was there too much and that imbalance made Jeff want men more than woman
I figured this when he was the one who refused to let scientists explore his brain post autopsy. they wanted to figure out what could have made him sick but he probably used Jeffrey wanting his body to be buried as a whole as an excuse to not find out how sick he was (considering it would have been cremated anyway and could have been put together after)
Yeah red flags you know there's millions of kids showing red flags on daily basis and less than 0.0001% of them will ever become killers, not to mention serial killers. It's always easy to point finger in retrospect, but just as a warning you will be judged by the words you have spoken. Your own measurements will be used against you.
the only thing that irks me is that Lionel asks for the victim’s family’s to forgive the man that coldly murdered their loved ones just because jeffrey is dead now
He wants the victims to experience the benefits of forgiveness. Its a huge step to forgive and forgiveness has absolutely nothing to do with the perpetrator. It doesn't mean that anything done was ok. Forgiveness is all about the victim trying to move on.
Are people really this mind numbingly stupid 😂. Have you really not seen just how many perfectly normal people speak like this. Not everyone is an animated speaker
@@ZaraMurphy1001 Me and my brother would pick dead animals and we did just fine. I’m sure back then in the 70’s it was no big deal, was just entertainment. Was better than cruel, murderous video games.
The thing is his father would never have thought he would commit such heinous crimes. He found out about a few odd things. But i doubt he ever thought oh my sons probably going to become the worst serial killer in America. To me he seemed to be a very loving father in the family home videos. Asking for forgiveness as one thing, but saying he paid the price is so unjustified, he tortured in the most gruesome barbaric inhumane way to so many people and he was killed quickly they don’t compare
His father is as much a victim as the families of the murder victims are also victims. It is just a sad, tragic tale. I can't even imagine the horrible guilt and pain his father has had to also endure from all of this.
I would have liked to hear dr. Phil's opinion regarding the outcome of that 'so-called insanity trial'.. All the mental health experts involved had different perspectives on Jeffrey's sanity
The moulding stage of a child is important, with no direction he can go astray and that's the time his parents left him,not blaming them but any child for that matter
I can't imagine how much greif, guilt and utter horror Lionel and his wife felt when they first learnt what their own son did. They must've been wondering and trying so hard to figure out what they did wrong when raising him since that.
Jeffrey was an extremely overly sensitive child that didn’t know how to express his need for love and attention. He craved emotional closeness from a male. Unfortunately it led him to take a course for the worse.
exactly. I'm not saying I sympathize with the killings, but that anger and abandonment had to come from somewhere. I feel sympathy for him only because of the abandonment from his mother, the bullying at school, if his parents wouldve seen the signs before hand then maybe he couldve gotten help.

Dissection of his brain wouldn’t show much if anything at all. His mom was abusive, and wanted to deflect everything. She abandoned jeff and took the brother. Nor did she visit or call Jeff after she left. Lionel wanted to know how this started and why. You won’t get that from a dissection of Jeff’s brain.

I feel for Lionel because that’s gotta be the hardest situation to possibly be in as a father. In part 1 of the interview Dr. Phil seemed to wanna hammer home the idea that Lionel didn’t do his job as a father, and missed all these warning signs and stuff. And here in part 2 he’s kinda doing it again. I mean it was just frustrating to watch because none of us could ever possibly understand how hard it is to be a father under those circumstances.
If you compare the father’s interviews vrs the mother, he takes accountability of his parenting compared to the mother. It was claimed the mother had seizures during her pregnacy and was given extreme medicine from the dr during a home visit. Yes back when dr’s came to your house. Everything was different back then but the mommy takes this as “blame’’ and denies it ever happened. Its not about blame, its seeking answers, warning signs missed and what can help others not to do with their own child.
When he said “I have had friends who also collected dead animal bodies” like Jeff did… like I feel like he was talking about himself and not “friends” of his …
Poor poor victims, families, friends ... and this murderer's parents. I do not think you can forgive these horrendous crimes. I hope the victims' families can kind of forget, but I do not think that you should be expected to forgive.
Little Jeffrey looked so happy as a little boy. I feel like he still had a tiny little purr piece of his inner child in his heart, and that’s why he had to drink all the time. He had to be in so much pain. I hope his victims and their families can forgive him and they all find peace.
I’m all fairness even though he played with dead animals I don’t think anyone would assume he would be killing 17 people. As parents we don’t ever put our minds there about our children. Lionel isn’t to be blamed.
One of the biggest issues i have is with the photos of Dahmer ages 11-14 and Lionel describes him as happy,i don't see happiness whatsoever i think he was wearing a mask of happiness/pretending to be happy because it's likely nor he or his brother grew up in a home where emotions were talked about
No one can imagine that your own child could become a murderer, even less a serial killer. Lionel certainly noticed that Jeffrey had some mental issues and lacked social skills, but no parent would consider the possibility of a child committing those atrocities.
In any interview or footage of Lionel speaking, he comes off as emotionless and cold. His face is almost mask life, and when he speaks it is always in the same monotonous tone. I feel uncomfortable watching him because I can not read him.

Unfortunately his father and mother are the number one reason he became this way. He was left alone for months while being a heavy alcoholic. He committed his first murder when he was left alone for those months. I think his father and mother didn’t pay much attention to Jeff. Abandonment is all mental
Absolutely. Those are his youthful years not teenage one. Other than the fact that his mother left him when he's 18, his parents also divorced.. The most important stage of a human is their developmental years, which they weren't able to pay much attention with. It's sad it ended up that way, even if we blame his parents.. we can't change things anymore. I think his father is a good man, he sure tried. I hope he forgave himself though.
Jeffrey was such a cute kid and seemed loved. I wish he would've gotten therapy he needed as a teenager, it could've made all the difference. He could've become a taxidermist or forensic pathologist instead going on a downward spiral and ruining many lives including his own.
no amount of therapy could cure the disease he had in his mind that would make him do those things to those people. if you want to eat people therapy aint gonna help that. he’s sick.
@@rdio3339 I believe he was sick but usually treatment for mental illness involves some kind of psychiatric counseling. If he would've talked to someone about his sexuality and the morbid thoughts he began having as a teenager maybe his illness wouldn't have gotten so severe. Forgiveness doesn't mean the pain or trauma vanishes
True, but it eases it. You can’t move on if you are holding on to something
Can anyone else see that the father is only describing what is seen in the family reel? It's like he's literally narrating from a scrip made for the reel, there's actually no personal account of any particular detail of his entire childhood, all he's saying are the typical thing that people play to pretend to. Nothing happens in a vacuum, and the father is not owning anything, "Jeff" now was an entire Angel and only was "off" when OTHER people seem him doing so, never in from of their parents. come on. He never laid a hand on him and he regrets it? Really, cause everyone got spanked at least once back in the day. He's lying and hiding the truth like a good Narcissist parent do.
Thank you! Someone here with some common sense! Plus, he was abusive to Joyce! He’s definitely hiding something.
Exactly! I think there’s some deep family secrets.
Ive always had an issue with his projection
True, and he once said he had thoughts of killing people
ive read his book and youre right, in this interview he barely says anything but in the book he admits to helping jeff decompose animals and save their bones etc
You forgive to set yourself free... it's not about the other person who hurt you but about your personal freedom
Forgiveness is for the victims benefit. It doesn't mean that anything that happened was ok.
I think it's totally fair tot ask them for forgiveness. It's also fair for the victims to choose not to.
“May god forgive you, but I won’t”

Seeing that old footage of J D childhood hurts...like how could an innocent looking kid could've turned into that bastard, how's humanity going to end up like... how would it be if his father didn't encourage that behaviour thinking it was inoffensive, would the victims have a change to be alive if he would have gotten help in the past? These type of things are just so unbelievable
They all seem fake and lacking emotional depth, even Jeff as a child.
Not sure lionel has really accepted how sick his son was
It’s hard to picture ur kid killing people in that way especially. I could see why if Thts the case
I agree
absolutely agree. i wonder why Jeff's mom has not been interviewed - I blame her more that anyone for Jeffs demise she just abandoned Jeff Lionel was there too much and that imbalance made Jeff want men more than woman
I figured this when he was the one who refused to let scientists explore his brain post autopsy. they wanted to figure out what could have made him sick but he probably used Jeffrey wanting his body to be buried as a whole as an excuse to not find out how sick he was (considering it would have been cremated anyway and could have been put together after)

kudos to this guy for doing interviews still
He looks so normal yet so disturbed.
Jesus Dr Phil just bursting at the end there made me jump
The parents dropped the ball. Lionel was a coward not to confront Jeff early on about the numerous red flags and warning signs.
I agree
I don't know why Lionel dissected those animals with his son and showed him how to use acid on them. It left a big impression on Jeff
And after him being arrested he was there like the boy was innocent I don't like this old man
This is such a grade school level comment that blatantly lacks basic understanding.
Yeah red flags you know there's millions of kids showing red flags on daily basis and less than 0.0001% of them will ever become killers, not to mention serial killers.
It's always easy to point finger in retrospect, but just as a warning you will be judged by the words you have spoken. Your own measurements will be used against you.
the only thing that irks me is that Lionel asks for the victim’s family’s to forgive the man that coldly murdered their loved ones just because jeffrey is dead now
RIGHT and he kept trying to clarify it more and more
He wants the victims to experience the benefits of forgiveness. Its a huge step to forgive and forgiveness has absolutely nothing to do with the perpetrator. It doesn't mean that anything done was ok. Forgiveness is all about the victim trying to move on.
His face is so emotionless, like Jeffs
You can see emotion in his face
Just my opinion
I think he is atypical
They must have him on medication for the interview to calm him down . He is old and they don’t want him to get upset .
Are people really this mind numbingly stupid 😂. Have you really not seen just how many perfectly normal people speak like this. Not everyone is an animated speaker
I feel so sorry for his parents it's really Not there fault 😔
Their *
It is their fault, if your child collects roadkill in a bag as a hobby, that's a huge red flag to any normal parent.

The thing is his father would never have thought he would commit such heinous crimes. He found out about a few odd things. But i doubt he ever thought oh my sons probably going to become the worst serial killer in America. To me he seemed to be a very loving father in the family home videos. No one could ever truly know what goes on in someone's mind. Not even your own children's.
Mental health therapy was not prominent back in the 1970’s. This entire generation suffered without assistance. So terribly sad.
Asking for forgiveness as one thing, but saying he paid the price is so unjustified, he tortured in the most gruesome barbaric inhumane way to so many people and he was killed quickly they don’t compare
Exactly but where is part 3?
Not to defend him but torture wasn't really part of Dahmer's killings. He preferred to kill his victims fast and quick.
It’s so uncomfortable watching him eat even normal food 🤢
Jeffrey was an extremely overly sensitive child that didn’t know how to express his need for love and attention. He craved emotional closeness from a male. Unfortunately it led him to take a course for the worse.
exactly. I'm not saying I sympathize with the killings, but that anger and abandonment had to come from somewhere. I feel sympathy for him only because of the abandonment from his mother, the bullying at school, if his parents wouldve seen the signs before hand then maybe he couldve gotten help.
@@tonyabarrett822 his mom didn't abandoned him. 🙄
@@8luvbug did you not do your research? His mom left him at the house alone while her and his younger brother ran off to his grandmas house, the day of his graduation, that to some people would be abandonment, get educated pls
@@tonyabarrett822 I've done plenty of research on this case. You clearly got your information from the inaccurate Netflix series. Now YOU please go get educated on what REALLY happened.
I can only imagine how he felt when he found out the truth about his son
I think there’s always been this push to blame his mother with wild accusations of issues without proof and she strongly denies them but I’ve always believed it was Lionel who was the problem in the home and he has the issues frankly.
He’s been off to me from the get go….
His mom wanted them to study his brain and Lionel didn't want to, but he mentions wanting to get to the bottom of it and figure out why his son was that way or made him that way? He knows that his brain might look just like his sons. I feel bad for him but then I don't
I mean how so?? No one is perfect on this earth. Lionel is not to blame for what his son did. Period. He always loved Jeffrey and tried his best.
Same! Media latched onto Lionel because he’s a man and they love blaming mothers
The pills no doubt had an effect despite what Joyce said. You can't even drink 2 plus cups of coffee or drink alcohol at all with a baby inside.

I feel so bad for his father. I kind of wonder if he kinda knew what was going on when the box had the head in it, n gave Jeff a chance to get rid of it. He loved his son so much
I feel for Lionel because that’s gotta be the hardest situation to possibly be in as a father. In part 1 of the interview Dr. Phil seemed to wanna hammer home the idea that Lionel didn’t do his job as a father, and missed all these warning signs and stuff. And here in part 2 he’s kinda doing it again. I mean it was just frustrating to watch because none of us could ever possibly understand how hard it is to be a father under those circumstances.

girl shut up and have some respect ffs☠
If you compare the father’s interviews vrs the mother, he takes accountability of his parenting compared to the mother. It was claimed the mother had seizures during her pregnacy and was given extreme medicine from the dr during a home visit. Yes back when dr’s came to your house. Everything was different back then but the mommy takes this as “blame’’ and denies it ever happened. Its not about blame, its seeking answers, warning signs missed and what can help others not to do with their own child.
This man is weird, it's even weirder that no one can see it😐
Dr Phil IS a creep.
You’re probably weird too.
Ohh I see it!!!! I wouldn't want to be in the same room as Lionel. We is weird AF!
I’ve always thought he was creepy. He’s a jerk.
When he said “I have had friends who also collected dead animal bodies” like Jeff did… like I feel like he was talking about himself and not “friends” of his …
My cousin also was interested in dead animals and their insides but he became a vet surgeon.
You never pay the price when you’ve taken multiple peoples lives… you’ve altered the world permanently, you’ve altered the future permanently.
My first question would have been, did you notice any warning signs while he was growing up?
Poor poor victims, families, friends ... and this murderer's parents. I do not think you can forgive these horrendous crimes. I hope the victims' families can kind of forget, but I do not think that you should be expected to forgive.
He truly has lost everything.
The mother looks super cold, the father distant and almost emotionless.
Not the mother

"Jeff was happy because there was a lot of things to eat."😱
A lot of hearts to eat
Could it be the father is hiding something?
In this specific interview yes, he’s not giving up all info. He did admit that he had the same thoughts as Jeff, he just wasn’t as impulsive as he was
Forgiving means accepting his crimes. You can not forgive a monster like that.
Asking him if he has anything to say to the families is a really weird question
He could be a veterinarian, a surgeon, if he liked exploring biology. He was misdirected. Bullying at school didn't help. Sexuality too.
He and his wife ignored Jeff in his main moulding stage
There is also such a thing as generational curses.....that's scriptural as well.
May grace and mercy abound.
Not everyone wears their heart on their sleeve & shows emotion, doesn’t mean Lionel doesn’t feel or is cold.
As an outsider to the American culture both the parents were responsible for his abandonment issues - he was an unwanted child who chose a wrong path!
The father look good for a 80+ yrs old man
This interview was probably 15+ years ago. He looks a lot older now. He did an interview in 2020 where you can clearly see his age.
There is NO forgiveness for what that evil monster did!
Little Jeffrey looked so happy as a little boy. I feel like he still had a tiny little purr piece of his inner child in his heart, and that’s why he had to drink all the time.
He had to be in so much pain. I hope his victims and their families can forgive him and they all find peace.
Sociopaths are made, not born.
Parents, spend time with your kids!
A human being is so much more complex than just one's chilhood or relationships with guardians
They are born, too.
Your comment is ignorant.
sociopaths are born that way or are predestined to be that, but childhood trauma associated with sociopathy can lead to become a serial killer.
@@KidsWithGuns1992they aren’t born. They are created
Sad for the father to don't paid attention to his son.
I’m all fairness even though he played with dead animals I don’t think anyone would assume he would be killing 17 people. As parents we don’t ever put our minds there about our children.
Lionel isn’t to be blamed.
One of the biggest issues i have is with the photos of Dahmer ages 11-14 and Lionel describes him as happy,i don't see happiness whatsoever i think he was wearing a mask of happiness/pretending to be happy because it's likely nor he or his brother grew up in a home where emotions were talked about
His father doesn’t seem so innocent to me.
I find it so weird that he asks for others to forgive dahmer and says that he has... like bro that is not your place at all. He is not a victim here
Ya'll can't blame the parents clearly even jeff said that the only one to blame for his actions were himself ...NOT his father
No one can imagine that your own child could become a murderer, even less a serial killer. Lionel certainly noticed that Jeffrey had some mental issues and lacked social skills, but no parent would consider the possibility of a child committing those atrocities.
What's there to be heard that has never been heard about Dahmer
I think the father is a bit messed up too. “Jeff” will never be able to pay enough for his crimes.
In any interview or footage of Lionel speaking, he comes off as emotionless and cold. His face is almost mask life, and when he speaks it is always in the same monotonous tone. I feel uncomfortable watching him because I can not read him.
his father lied about road kill part from what i recall jeff said his father would help with the road kill as showed how to clean fish and some of the stuff in his book down clabrate with what jeff said
When David came along he was completely normal she didn’t take no medications with him but when jeff was in her stomach she felt nothing other than harm him
bruh, no way Dr. Phil the menace gotta say hi to the pops of a murder , also remember back when dr phil interviewed that raging kid, those were hilarious
Seeing them grasp at religion for closure and answers is hard
It’s interesting Mr. Dahmer really looks good for his age man has went through so much debauchery and manifestations and all kinds of demons that he had to deal with when his son died yet Mr. Dahmer looks good
Jeff was so gorgeous, and he got it from somewhere!
Nope. Something is very wrong here.
Unfortunately his father and mother are the number one reason he became this way. He was left alone for months while being a heavy alcoholic. He committed his first murder when he was left alone for those months. I think his father and mother didn’t pay much attention to Jeff. Abandonment is all mental
And people act like they are victims.
I hope he forgave himself though.
forgive, but not forget.
Forgive him his dads bonkers aswell..
I am so sorry for this family. God bless his parents and his step mother.
He also began drinking heavily in high school and was upset about his parents divorcing. Clearly some kind of intervention was necessary but I understand mental health awareness wasn't very prevalent in the 1970s.
He needed to be away from his father who is a sociopath ASPD+NPD and corrupted abused neglected and enmeshed his won sadistic fantasies into, he created Dahmer with calculated they killed animals together
He was in forensics, in his previous life. Poor kid. All he wanted to do was continue on helping people. He was misunderstood.
Jeffery was a evil & disgusting person. The way y’all sympathize is sick asf, like really sick cause who gaf what he could’ve been & realize wtf he was. I hope the victims families never come across bs comments like this. Y’all are sick.
