Filly's 2nd ride. How to motivate the lazy horse and how I discourage bucking

  • Isn't she a cute little filly? Join me as I put ride number 2 on this 2 year old filly. Yes, she can be a little hard to motivate, so stay tuned to see how I encourage her to move and discourage her from bucking.
My take on starting 2 and 3 year olds: I like that their minds are impressionable at this age, and believe it's important to get the idea of carrying a rider in their head at this age. That being said, it's important to just do enough rides to get them into a walk, trot, canter, stop and back up, and to have some turn, and be emotionally ok with all of those answers. This is usually done in 5-15 rides, and that would be it for the 2 year old year. Enough to strengthen the joints from carrying a little extra weight, but not so much riding that they become injured.

Sweet little filly. I am one of your followers with a lazy horse and really love you talking us through the ride. Great session.

Thank you Calan, I really love sharing my thoughts. I’ll be sure to make a hackamore video within the next couple of weeks.

The hackamore video is up. It’s a really basic rundown on how I use it.

Really good video that. My horse is left brained and pretty lazy, she can wear the spanking very well. Trouble I have is I'm doing it in an arena not a round pen, I will get she trotting forward but when I bring the head around will a direct rein she will either try stop at the corner or break gait back to walk, then I have to put my legs on and spank her to trot again. Any ideas?

This was great. I'm experiencing these things with my colt. I would very much appreciate an instructional video for the hackamore. I want to use one on my colt but I sure would prefer to not screw him up. Thank you

@@_thenaturalhorseman thank you very much. Preparing to use the hackamore is almost causing anxiety because some people make it look as though if you have never done it, you should not do it. I see great value in it though.

Good video but the reason why your having trouble with her moving forward is because it looks like your saddle is alittle too forward the saddle pad should be right before her hipbone and alittle behind the shoulder on the front end . When you have it so forward like you do your sitting on her shoulders and it’s hard for her to rotate them freely.
