when Gary says objectively untrue things like "Technology is exposing who you are, not changing you", it's hard to take him seriously... it's a proven & well-researched/widely known fact that social media completely messes up your perception of others, your perception of yourself, your perception of the world, etc. It's not "a mirror" at all... it's a window that looks out on whatever the algorithm wants to show you, & it knows how to manipulate you by showing you different things... but good episode overall lol

I do think it’s a mirror to some degree but it is definitely a situation where these companies wrap everyone around their fingers. I liked Gary vee for awhile but then I couldn’t take his vibe anymore. He’s just so overkill to the point that it doesn’t do anybody any good to follow his every word of advice otherwise they will totally miss out on nuances of life that will help you enjoy it more and also become your best self in personal and also career and skill sets too. If he wants to grind at life just to grind for the only sole purpose of grinding; and that makes him feel good and happy, then great. To me, his way of life seems like running a hampster wheel just because it gives a false sense of movement and progression in life when leaving the cage and rat race is actually the point of life, however that’s just my view for myself. I don’t think he realizes how his example to his millions of followers is in most cases just causing people to loose interest in life and missing out on a little balance in their lives because they get burned out and discouraged trying to follow his advice. Elon Musk has more balance than Gary vee even for crying out loud. Lol.
He also gets on people for being on social media too much yet he shows off his example of being on social media constantly. What I also find funny about a lot of what he says is that he is only focusing on the outreach, the numbers, the followers. For example he totally was missing the point of hot ones with his thoughts on improving hot ones marketing and outreach. Having a “live” show would be complete opposite of what the show is about. The reason this yt show is so good is because it makes a chill environment where it’s just two people hanging out essentially having a conversation and getting a side of actors and celebrities that you would never get in any other format. I also think a podcast you would totally loose all the good stuff about a hot ones episode. That’s like saying they should have made arrested development a podcast imo. Not just about the audio.
If people like Gary vee then great, but for me he’s just too much and misses the point when it comes to the creativity in a lot of things, and also learning to look at life in a very different way where you can actually take life in and soak it up in all the wonderful experiences it has to offer. It’s I’m extremely important to grind hard in life so you can not just survive in this day in age but thrive, but you still gotta have a little bit of balance in some kind of ratio. Otherwise you’ll get to your later years and miss out on a hell of a lot to experience in life.

This may very well be my very favorite episode of Hot ones. Let's just start off from the beginning because we know this show wouldn't be anything without Sean. Dude does his homework and his due diligence. He's just the best at what he does. And then throw in Gary Vee? That's a wrap. What a freaking awesome interview and I just think the world of Gary Vee. They've done tests on changing your feed to cause emotion such as sadness, happiness, anger and then expose the subject to different ads to see how they react and what they buy. Zuckerberg also tried to de y ai threat when he personally had 2 ai bots talking and learning from each other and they made their own language to converse on the spot! Plus all the bullshit with Instagram becoming a direct copy of Snapchat. I just have no respect for the company.

I think he meant "us" in a broader "as a whole" sense. People were saying that facebook news feeds helped sway the last election as a platform of misinformation. But rumors and the viral spread of misinformation have been around a lot longer than the internet. So yes, saying that facebook is a mirror for society is an oversimplification but I would agree that it's just our current space for something that we will always be doing in some form or another, gossiping.
