Dr. Shaun, please don't lose that ability to give bad news. A lot of patients know the diagnosis before you tell them, especially with cancer. A friend and my aunt both had terminal cancer and no doctor would say the words. My friend's ER doctor had to tell after 4 weeks of trying to see her because her Hemo oncologist would not face her. My aunt connected me for out of state to read her results. She knew she had stage 4 lung cancer and when she went to get her results from the doctor. He refused to see her and had his nurse tell her to go home and a doctor will call you. No mention of cancer. She gets and email from a cancer center to schedule an appointment. Please don't be one of them. Your a good doctor. Stay positive. 😊
I don’t plan on going into the medical field at all, but honestly, I stumbled onto your channel randomly while at work. To be honest, it’s been a huge motivation booster for me. I work in IT as a network engineer, with long hours, and sometimes it feels like I don’t have a social life. But seeing you go through what seems like 10 times worse and still manage to find time for the gym and friends has been inspiring. You push through things, and I really admire that about you.
Wow, I really appreciate you watching and supporting the channel even if you aren't in this field. Your kind words mean so much. It is an important mindset to have that, even though we are spending a lot of time working, we need to make time for friends, family, hobbies. We gotta get through the day no matter what, but we have the power to control what we do with our time!
@@ShaunAndersen Thank you so much! You’ve really pulled me out of a tough spot, and I can’t thank you enough for that. I wish you all the best in your career and with the channel! You’ve got my full support, brother.
I recently found you, and I have mad respect for the transparency. I have been in hospitals more then I like, and too many of the doctors seem jaded, and don't actually want to help you. Your energy is a breath of fresh air, and any patient that finds themselves under your care is very lucky.
I appreciate the kind words so much, it really means a lot :) It sucks how many people are jaded in this field. I can understand it for sure, but I think mindset is so important
You also have to remember that Shaun and many of the younger generation that is posting here in YT and other social media are VERY young in their years as doctors (hence the residency). The joy, the eagerness, and the enthusiasm is widespread and awesome to see, but healthcare takes it's toll. Those older docs are jaded not because they want to, but because of the mental and physical toll being a doctor takes and over the many years, it's rough. I'm not a doctor, but I'm 7 ears a nurse (+2 more now being an NP), and I remember being so excited and enjoying my time early on as a nurse. By the time 5 years hit (which was through covid), that "passion" to care of others slowly dwindled because of the extras that come with taking care of others whether it be colleagues, the disease, persona life stuff, insurance, everything and anything. Regardless, I have much respect to all med students, future docs, resident docs, and older docs as I could never do it, or want to be one either.
I could never be a doctor. I have much respect for all of you. I had to see a neuro for potential MS diagnosis and I got the opportunity to work with a resident as well as primary specialist. The resident did amazing and talked about how i’m not in medical but watched your channel and he mentioned he did as well! So if he see’s this, HI!
Oh wow, I hope everything is okay and your workup comes back negative. But that is so cool you guys were able to bond over this channel! :) I love that!
Although I am still a med 1 student, I am a huge procrastinator, but I am very passionate. So, I have learned from your channel to maintain my physical health and think optimistically even during hard times. I see many socially introverted people, and I am part of them in some way. But I know how important being social is to patient care. So, thanks to your channel, I have been trying to have a more social experience throughout medical school so that I feel confident enough in front of patients to discuss fully what concerns their care. Our ethics doctor was also very passionate in his late 60s, & much of what he taught us a month ago, you have proved throughout these vlogs. I never thought doctors remained after hours without extra pay, & I also never thought about staying after work to have a final round to go and discuss any final worries that the patients may have before going back home. But, with your channel, the channel of Violin MD, & our ethics doctor, I have uncovered way more truth behind the practice of medicine. Despite it seeming exhausting, I see the beauty in doing so & being one of the primary references for nurses while they perform their patient care. You give me so much hope & I am very inspired by your mindset and work ethic.

I watch your vlogs every now and then, I love seeing "the life of *insert medical profession here*" vlogs. I really appreciate how in this video you stressed the importance of empathy and kindness. I'm a medical assistant and I have worked many specialties with various types of people, and there is an overflowing handful of doctors, nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, medical receptionists that don't have these two KEY qualities. Its saddening to see and watch. Thank you again for stressing that. Keep doing what you do and being true to you and your patients. You will go far!

I’m not sure if I missed it in another video do you mind sharing how you budget your income for expenses, if that’s okay? I’m switching my career to pre-med to become a psychiatrist and I have a toddler which is why I ask 😅
Honestly, I don't really know how US healthcare system works but I can't fully agree normalising this idea that in order to be a doctor you have to accept working 12-15h/day. I mean that even in my country residents work 80h/week even if they're supposed to work 38h/week, but doctors more than anyone should know the impact of stress on the mind and body, up to a cellular level. So patients supposed to be taken care of by stressed doctors is a pillar of this society I don't really comprehend, especially in a country like yours where you have to spend most of your life paying back college debt. Seeing doctors as martyrs instead of workers is not my ideal, I would be extremely pissed off
Got it, I think it’ll get easier in year two 😊. The big difference between med school and residency is you want to be a doctor all the time in med school and you have to be a doctor all the time 😂😂 I have faith that you’ll be a GREAT attending doctor in a few years 😊. These videos are great, which show your emotions and struggles along your journey 😮😂
Did your Tesla update to the beta FSD? Not the 30 day demo. Also when you “discharge” a patient do you actually do all the discharge education or is it just because you’re a resident? I’m a nurse and at my hospital nurses are the ones who do all of that the doctors just place the discharge orders 😅
Is it true the standard of care is way different if you have a family doctor then a walk in clinic doctor? I really like our walk in but ppl keep saying to get a real family doctor. Just wondering!!
Family doctors are a waste anymore. They rush with their patients and will either push pills on you or just send you to a "specialist". They are basically just a scam.
Hello, I’m currently 27 years old I knew I’ve always wanted to work in the medical field but because of my past of dropping out of school because of laziness (ended up going back and getting my high school diploma) I’m not sure if that would be something that would affect me if I end up trying to go to med school. Do you know if that would affect me?
I know medicine is competitive and alll and yall worked hard and stuff but there is literally 2 spots for this mayo gen surg APP fellowship PER YEAR we all work hard in surgery and officially, its really subjective if one type of provider is better than the other one. but more is always merrier why argue about one type of provider being better because of "more training" when I literally always demand to see atleast two specialists???
Zach Highley just quit medicine after his intern year. I feel like I have what it takes but it’s very hard to keep pushing when I see my motivation slowly dropping out

I know you’re transparent with how much you make for your two week pay but I’m curious to know if you’re able to save with that income / or I guess how you save with that income.
Seeing doctors as martyrs instead of workers is not my ideal, I would be extremely pissed off
Hello Shaun happy sunday ✋👍🙏🏻❤💯
@@pablodejesus1373 happy Sunday!! 🥳🥳
@@ShaunAndersen thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Question: Do you get paid for the extra hours you work? Do you get overtime pay for it?
Nope :( just salary
Your short haircut gives you a fresh and youthful vibe. It really suits you. 💇♂️
Agreed!
Awhhh thank you :’) I’ll keep it this way for a little
I kinda dug the old “90s Boy Band” hair 🤷🏾♂️ lol
I liked it too but it was so much higher maintenance :( might grow it out again tho we will see
Do you have any recommendations like besides UWorld to studying for the STEPs?
honestly im only doing UWorld!
I use cookies to bribe people to switch my shifts too lol must be a nurse thing
😂😂😂
I want to be a doctor so badly, but Zach Highley has me reconsidering so much😭 Idk what to do🤦🏽♂️
I’m still in SHOCK he left medicine !
Sir how much student loans do you have? Plz reply. Thanks a lot.
Why would someone not want a dog? Well, in my case because it hurts a lot when their time on Earth is up.
True, but that’s why you need to appreciate every moment with them :)
@@ShaunAndersen Yeah, the memories are what I try to hold onto. I guess time will heal things. Right now, it just hurts like shit.
5:20 ba wow, ba wow
😂😂😂
I need to leave med school cuz I can't compete with those kendama skills. :(
You better start practicing 🤪
Which is tougher: med school or 1st year intern ?
Both are tough in different ways! Med school sucks bc of the studying, but residency is hard because the hours and work are exhausting
Got it, I think it’ll get easier in year two 😊. The big difference between med school and residency is you want to be a doctor all the time in med school and you have to be a doctor all the time 😂😂
I have faith that you’ll be a GREAT attending doctor in a few years 😊.
What program are you doing?
Looking fresh dude . ( i also had to get a haircut and my head feels so much lighter )
@@devmehta236 thank you 🙏🏻 it feels soooo much better when it’s shorter haha it felt like a mop before
Hi can I ask which residency field you are in? looks interesting
They are basically just a scam.
standard of care is always the same! :)
You’re always handsome, doctor, but you look like a handsome 21 year old now. Great cut!!
That’s the best compliment ever :’) ty so much!!
u got me scared at the beginning i thought u were about to reveal some unknown life changing consequence about being a doctor 😭😭
Gotta scare yall for the clicks 😂😂
How’s your step 3 prep going?
Not as good as it should be :(
Are you going to do any meet and greets? What are you doing for Diwali?
I’d be down if there was enough people! 👀
@@ShaunAndersen Want to hire me as public relations, outreach, & social media manager?
plz dont tell you want quit also 😭😭😭😭
I wont!! :'(
Sir how much do you expect to earn as an attending physician? Plz reply. Thanks a lot.
Probably at least 400k
No fair you didn't show the ecg 6:30 but I'm going to guess it was a AMI based of presentation or afib with RVR
I think you’re right 👀
@@ShaunAndersenWe need the ECG….increased atenolol, syncope, no report of palpitations….I’m assuming CHB….give that man some glucagon!
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR JACKET FROM
Which one 🤯
@@ShaunAndersen The black one you're wearing 2 minutes in 👀
What was the answer to the uworld question!?!?!?!? I wanna say A. but without seeing the EKG, idk....
Are you a resident at Mountain View Hospital?
SHH!
I may go there sometimes tho
@@ShaunAndersen don’t worry, i won’t tell a soul, i just thought that view looked familiar ;)
Do you dictate your notes?
Yesss! :) saves so much time
It’s S(ha)unday!
Omg I love that! 😂😂
Your perseverance is admirable, Shaun! You got this (ง’̀-‘́)ง
Thank you!! :)
Get so much out of your videos Shaun, I appreciate you!
I appreciate you more 🥺 thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
What’s the name of that game? (ANYONE who know pls chime in 😀)
what game :O
I know medicine is competitive and alll and yall worked hard and stuff but there is literally 2 spots for this mayo gen surg APP fellowship PER YEAR
we all work hard in surgery and officially, its really subjective if one type of provider is better than the other one. but more is always merrier
why argue about one type of provider being better because of "more training" when I literally always demand to see atleast two specialists???
Zach Highley just quit medicine after his intern year. I feel like I have what it takes but it’s very hard to keep pushing when I see my motivation slowly dropping out
Oh wow I didn’t realize he quit! It is a tough field and I feel like so many people are quitting now
@@ShaunAndersen it might just be the ones who post about it that we see more of 🤣 since all the people I’ve seen quit have a UA-cam channel, but still. There are more that quit that don’t share it with social media… definitely a hard field
