Steroid use is not controversial in the least. It has in fact been known since 2020 Mid year, that steroids are the only drugs that have mortality benefits amongst Covid patients. And prevention of Cytokine storms is one of the main mechanisms it does that by.
I think u misunderstood. They meant that steroids can suppress cytokine storm and reduce inflammation, but steroids reduce the immunity of the patient, so the person is not able to fight other infections. Black fungus cases are increasing due to this.
Overuse or early use of steroids has its own complications. It reduces cytokines for sure but also d immunity, which allows d virus to thrive n attack d lungs more, or.. recently we r seeing reports of an epidemic happening in India..called mucormycosis, which is a type of fungal infection. Such secondary fungal infections r usually due to lower immunity, which in this case i presume is due to steroid overuse
Steriod use leads to high blood sugar levels on which black fungus grows.

First; isolate
Second; consult doctor and Start monitoring from day 1
Third; testing for covid19
Fourth; testing for danger sign
For cytokine storm specifically:
When you have high fever & condition worsening, your doctor will ask for some blood test. Also if you are in high risk group.like age, diabetic,BP etc.
So under proper evaluation doctor will prescribe you steroids.
To be even more specific;

My question is why can't we immediately start a covid positive patient on an antiviral drug..regardless of how good or bad r d symptoms?? Cos clearly it looks like waiting for disease to progress to start therapy is proving to be very very risky! One may have mild symptoms but d virus maybe rapidly multiplying inside d lungs, n one night all of sudden d person cannot breathe n it'd be too late to do anything that time. I'm not making this is up..I do know a person (in his 40s) who had mild symptoms n didn't get treated but suddenly one night his oxygen levels dropped n was hospitalized but in vain as he passed away early in d morning

There is no antiviral drug specific for Covid. Treatment is mainly symptomatic. Even Remdesivir and Fabiflu have doubtful efficacy.
Yes. But they have shown to have some efficacy. There's ivermectin too. I know none of them r specifically proven. But in a dire emergency even partially effective treatments r good enough. If we can reduce viral load to some extent we may reduce chances of death. Wait n watch till symptoms r severe can prove to be very costly. The PCR Test doesn't even detect viruses. Covid hasn't even been isolated.
