What is it like to draw on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3? They have added s-pen support, in fact they have a special S-pen just for this device that is going to be more gentle on the screen. The Wacom powered stylus is surprisingly good, but it's not without its flaws.

QUICK NOTE: I made a mistake, older S-Pens do not work on this device. Samsung has disabled them because they can damage the screen.
I got mine on the 25th and when watching videos and gaming i cant notice the UDC at all blends in perfectly imo. your focused on the center of the screen where the content is. Also love using the s pen with it. Subbed, great video!
is there any chance that you may review Mi pad 5 (pro) for drawing? It's a very reasonably priced tablet from Xiaomi and I wonder if it may ok to replace the basic drawing pad (those cheapest ones like CTH-480 for example).
@@MienLeHoang I would love to see this too. I’ve seen some samples of the pen, but they look horrible. There is one Chinese guy comparing it to the iPad Air. But he was saying some completely opposite things to what’s actually happening.
It seems that they are using what is usually the 'eraser frequency' on tablet/phone EMR pens as the pen frequency here as people are saying that their erasers are working. That would also explain how the S Pen Pro works.
it's not disabled... but it has different frequencies.. the writing/drawing frequency that used on fold same as eraser on older s pen, so if u use fold edition s pen on s21 ultra for example, s21 ultra will recognized it as an eraser...

First of all, it's nice to finally see a review of this phone that heavily features it's pen and drawing side. I use my phone (Galaxy Note) for drawing and needed a replacement. The Fold 3 was now my only option and I'm thankful I found this 😭🙏

It is good ! The fold 3 replaces my ipad 11 pro, I use Huion Sketch an good procreate clone, while still new it gets many updates. I use it for creating animation spritesheets for my upcoming videogame sketchy fables.
I feel like the inside screen is a good size for a quick-ish doodle

tbh I'm all for the in display camera,, they could probably improve it a little with softwhere updates too, but I think it functions as it is intended, remember guys it's first gen for a Samsung phone, it will get better just like the folding phone itself look at how far we come from gen 1 z-fold to gen 3, I'm pretty impressed

Also brad,the stylus has a spring on the interior which functions as a type of suspension to prevent excess pressure from damaging the screen
True. I played with it a bit and it feels a lot like the springs in other styluses. I wouldn't be surprised if they put more "spring" into it, but it's hard to tell. the softer tip though is definitely noticeable.

This is the review I've been waiting for! I am a major Note artist. My biggest concern, besides the pen not being integrated is the crease. Thanks for the info! Kind of considering it as my next phone. EEK.
My immidiate instinct is to take the pen and keep drawing straight vertical lines in the middle while applying increasing pressure
then u get 2 phones for the price of 1

I'm literally in the same boat. But I'm contemplating just going for the M1 pro since it'll be nearly the same price and it'll be pretty much future proof. But I'm not a ios user my last ios device was an iPad 2nd gen and I swore to myself, after the ios8 update bricked my device, I wouldn't get another apple anything unless it was free. That time has come and I'm like, do I finally go for it or stick to products I know. 🤷♀️

Having a pocketable drawing tablet feels like an absolute dream.
6:28 "in fact you can use those styluses here on the Fold" - this isn't actually true. If you use one of the older S-pen styluses on the Fold3, it will give an error that says only Fold compatible styluses work. This also means you cannot use the S Pen Pro on the Fold3.
It's literally have a physical Fold3 mode switch on that S-pen Pro so you're wrong
They also said that you can use other stylus but they don't recommend it
You can actually use the S Pen Pro, but you have to switch it to "fold mode".
Oh true, I might be thinking of any of the *other* S-Pens, and not the Pro (these model names are confusing lol). That might be my bad. I know definitely the older S-Pens without that physical switch definitely don't work.
@@GTAandApplechannel You can't use other EMR pens as the frequency used for the tip is different (and how they are detecting it). It seems that they are using the frequency usually used for the eraser on other pens.
So you can draw with eraser of other pens (if they have one) and the S pen Pro must have a switch that switches it to the eraser frequency (note how it doesn't have an eraser).
I don't know how they are locking out the usual frequency though. It seems like it's just a software lock as the digitiser can clearly detect it.

Thank you. Every since they announced this type of tech I've been wondering how well it would work for an artist. I had a feeling that the crease would be an issue.
Also I never considered that holding it would be an issue. You might try using one of those stick on rings or nubs on the back so you can hold with one hand.
I know a lot of artist can do this but for me “let me do some circle” and proceed smoothly is the biggest flex ngl
Exactly the video I've been waiting for, Brad, you're a saviour (One thing: you can only use the fold stylus on the fold, any other stylus or s-pen throws up an error message on the phone)

Thanks for the review! Yeah, the crease will be an annoying problem, especially for some of us that likes to draw clean lineart. Looks like we'll still have to wait for one or two generations before folding screen is viable for artist.
Go to your local best buy and test it out. The bump is way less intrusive than I thought it would be. Noticeable? Yes. Preventing you from easily making clean lines? Not even close
It can be annoying on a psychological level, but I feel like it's something you'd easily get used to after a few days of usage

Thanks for posting this. I was about to go to the store and get one of these tomorrow (order one really). I've been waiting on these Folds for Samsung to add S Pen support. There are a few things that are actually downgrades from my current phone, the Note 20 Ultra, but really I worked out the pros and cons and the thing I use my phone most for is the screen, especially watching videos. So I think that will make it worth it, then maybe next year I'll see if I want to get the next Fold or the Note 22 if it exists.
I love that I can rely on your channel to see if a drawing device is good fro drawing. I can never afford the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. So I appreciate your YT channel to provide me with answers about drawing devices even though I cannot afford them.
5:10 brad hasn't even mentioned it yet but I when I saw the middle of the screen at that time for the first time, I subconsciously reenacted Leonardo DiCaprio whistling meme in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. Of course i get your point, but that's always the point of digital art, you trade the natural feeling of drawing on paper, painting on canvas, texture feeling... for layers, resolution, space, plenty of brushes, ctrl z 😁...
And i think the z fold is a kind of other step into this, for example indeed you lose the entire screen but you gain the fact that it can fit in your pocket.
I'm also aware that it's far from perfect, and the price 😱 but i really enjoy the tech and also curious of it ! 😊
@@bentoubab You have no idea what you're talking about. The real problem with this folding phone is that it has that bumb part in the middle that used to fold the phone. You never want that bumb surface because it completely ruined the drawing experience so that is why it genuinely an insult to the user who actualy use it to draw. Traditional and digital is like 2 good siblings.
Great video on this new cutting edge product! While watching you draw on the screen, I noticed how frequently you zoom in and out while you're drawing. That could be one way that an artist could get around that "bump in the middle" problem. Zoom the screen in such a way that you're not drawing that part of the picture directly over the "bump". Just sayin'!
Yeah, totally. The nice thing about these touch screens is how easy they make it to move around the canvas and get it into a comfortable position.
Finally a review from an illustrator 😍
One awesome use case for this is for contractors and engineers taking field markups. This style device as a work phone means teams can take live markups and access giant drawing sets in the field without needing separate tablet devices. Since companies have to buy phones AND tablets for those professions, this consolidates that and is a way underreported use case!
I'd suggest a SamsungGalaxyNote III or IV
(Put LineageOS 17 on and you can use CSP).
The user exp is simiar enough.
And it is waaaaaaaaay cheaper
8:58 holding it when it opens like that there should be a "dry point" on the screen that doesnt react to touch so you can grip it with your thumb or finger in the corner or edge in the middle so you can hold it better without activating that spot
for the Note there's Edge Touch (with Good Lock) that lets you adjust this. I wonder if something like this is available for the Zfold3.

What if you draw a vertical line right up the middle of the screen, right along the crease? You're not on either digitizer
Great take and insight as always. I have been loving sculpting and drawing on my fold 3. I can put up with Amy shortcomings for the convenience of a device that can be with me all the time. I find I'm getting lots of ideation sculpts and sketches in throughout the day.

@@jahayrac8636 Infinite Painter for sketching and painting. Nomad Sculpt for 3D sculpting. I've been playing around with Clip studio too. I'm really loving it honestly.
@@artofalfenito Thank you so much! ❤ I've always wanted to try sculpting but don't have many opportunities to do so without going to my laptop and getting expensive programs. I'm eager to try this out! Clip studio is new for me and I agree, it's really nice program! I enjoyed it so much I jumped at the deal Clip Studio had a month or so ago. It's nice to be able to take my art with me and experiment without needing a large device or two for that matter. And for that reason I'm really considering getting the Fold 3.

Drawing a flying phallus while talking about tips and hand size didn't distract me from noticing the diagonal refresh. Don't believe I've seen that before. Also your B-roll tripod setup looks like a camera mobile which would lead to some interesting baby pictures
I loved it. I am not an illustrator but for the kinds of drawings I make, it is plenty.

The divot is the biggest pet peeve for me. I hope they fix this issue in future models.
This was the first and pretty much only thing I wanted to know about these folding phones, and I'm glad I'm finally seeing one put to the test. I'm glad they've made it work with the S-Pen, but that physical bump in the middle is just... I know it would drive me bananas.
I want to get hyped, but all this simply feels like a solution looking for a problem, and it's not all that well-engineered a solution in the first place.

I've owned almost every Galaxy Note since the Note 2 so I'm used to having a phone with the S-pen. I was looking forward to this phone but I'm disappointed that unlike the Note series, they didn't include a slot within the phone for the S-pen. I know it would have made the phone larger but it needs to be in the phone.
Putting a bigger battery and making it thinner is main priority for this phone.

There are a couple I use. Towards the beginning it's Infinite painter. and then in the drawing section it's Clip Studio Paint. I think Huion Sketch made a brief appearance in some of the shots too.

i already have the galaxy tab s7, so i dont really need a phone that can draw as well. and originally the z fold 3 had me all in for it. but after i thought about it some more, i decided that the galaxy z flip 3 is actually the best for me. the new folding technology is just too good to pass up, and they really nailed the price and performance for the z flip 3. idc about the battery or the fact that its using last gen's camera hardware. the software and postprocessing is still good.
Has anything changed with the fold 6?
1800 and you have to buy your own adapter. its nuts... and dont tell me people have adapters left over at home because they are in general older and not suited for the fastcharching of the latest models samsung. so you end up with a phone capable of fully getting charged in 20 minutes yet charging it from your oold leftover slow chargingn for hours.
for any device so exclusive and expensive i expect a dedicated charger

This phone only charges up to 25 watts. I've had 25 watt charging blocks for a good number of years now. These aren't the expensive, rare ones that charge like 45W or more.
Huh? Anyone buying this device likely has a bunch of chargers lol. I have like two I'm every room. I charge this with my MacBook pro charger and it chargers in like 30 minutes.
@@artofalfenito usually the charger that comes with a newer device is more power rated and faster then with the previous model (this wont be happening in future as there will be a limit but last 5 years this happened) for example. i used to have a huawei mate 9 phone . charger 10 watt. then a p30 pro. charger 20 watt. now a p 40 pro and it came with a charger 40 watt.
they are saving money on chargers. yet you must buy charger to get the best charging time.
@@artofalfenito and if its for eco friendlyness they should not leave the charger out as full stopp as people who need that new fast charger will buy one seperately wich gives even more plastic packaging and extra mail travel time... id be ok with it if you could get it optional in the phone package. so you buy a phone and it can be with or without charger . witout is cheaper with is full price.. and if you choose with , its in the phone package so no extra seperate packaged charger

I think the official case for the Fold 3 is supposed to have a slot to hold S-Pen.
Yeah, but as the holder/slot is on the hinge, you then can't lay the phone flat when open.
I have the fold3. The reviews for the case with the s pen holder are pretty negative.
I'm super curious to know what you think of the Z Fold 4. Although my curiosity can't pay for you to provide the device for review. 😅
What art program were you using? Part of the reason I got the fold is because I was looking at wacom tablets and found out this phone uses their technology

Great review, highly anticipated. Thanks for just diving into the crease experience right away because we would have been thinking about it all the time until it was mentioned, so distraction out of the way. You're the first reviewer to mention other Wacom stylus(es?) could work on the Fold 3.
The crease doesn't bother me at all when screen is on i personally can't see it and when using s-pen i can barley tell its there especially after using it for writing, drawing, work for the past 5 days got mine on the 25th.
They won't work on the Fold 3. Wacom styles do work on samsung tablets etc, but they won't work on Z Fold 3. The reason is that the Fold3 needs its tip that retracts when pressure applied.

You did a lot of stuff to review that phone ✨
As a 3 month fold user, the seam reslly isnt an issue unless your perhaps touch screen gaming, drawing is easy but you might want to pick the pace up going thru the seam.
Quick side note, keep the inner display and the hedge clean as much as possible, no dust resistance allows dirt buildup and without proper cleaning bubbles will infact form into the seam. I suggest cleaning multiple times per week cause the inner screen will get dusty in pockets or in types of weathering.
Imagine they added a safe zone where your fingers can rest without being registered on the screen while drawing. Like a little black box that you can move and adjust?
I've been loving sculpting on it with nomad sculpt! Honestly the bump doesn't bother me that much, I can do a majority of my lines off the crease.

At least the middle depression doesn't exist on the watch. Unfortunately, Samsung still hasn't figured out how to store the styles within the product.
I like the way you describe drawing products.
Illustrator here. I would prefer (for me) that the Zfold 3 would have been made 4:3 like the duo with two screens. That way I could draw on both screens separately. I like the Duo's layout better. I would not mind a large phone that would result. Either way this would have to be kept in a camera bag or something carried since too large for pocket anyway. I love the idea of a phablet.

The phone is water resistant(not waterproof) in fresh water not salt. And the under display camera only appears on white or black color. The under display camera is in invisible on other colors. Ive messed with the phone and its a beast.
My fiance ordered one and it should be arriving soon. I hope he enjoys it

Personally the s pen was the feature I wanted on the fold since gen 1. Maybe not for the main digital draw more fo like sketches and stuff like one uses a galaxy note for Just with a bigger screen. Though I think it still a few or a atleast one more generation and another major price cut to become more viable

YES! but most drawing apps have interface stuff up there so you can't really draw there.
Which paint program are you using in the video? I am really enjoying my Fold 3. More so for general sketching and CAD work though. Great for CAD on site work. Thanks Steve

I have this phone as for the thumb issue I just bought a case with a phone ring to the side so I can draw ^^
