When the tagline in the trailers said "From the Director of Paddington", I just know it's going to be great. Paddington was also underestimated at first for being a cash grab trainwreck on par with the Alvin and The Chipmunks movies but turned out to be extremely satisfying

Absolutely go see it. I went in figuring I'd probably get a solid B but instead it was an easy A+. Only movie I've seen this year that might match is Godzilla Minus One
What I like most about this movie is how much like a Roald Dahl story this felt while somehow being the most grounded Dahl adaptation we've gotten since the original Willy Wonka and Matilda movies.. The bully characters, the abusive-to-children adults, the challenging of a system, the absurd body shapes and colors, a bunch of Dahl tropes all tied together in a story of whimsey and wonder.
I watched it last night and loved it. It was so much fun! The cast was great. Timothee did a great job as Wonka. I loved the songs. I will definitely see it again at the cinema this holiday season.
This was way more “Family Movie” than”Kids Movie” but a good assessment for an even greater film. Genuinely had a good time with this one, felt like a damn rollercoaster.
In my opinion, there is no such thing as kids movies. Those movies that were aiming at younger audiences should also entertain adults who's smart enough to enjoy the story for what it is. Wonka is an old IP, it's meant to entertain everybody, not just kids
The little kids at our showing elevated the film tbh. Like you said, some jokes I normally wouldn't have cared, but hearing the children in the audience giggle or respond in amusement elevated the entire experience.
My wife and I realized we've been watching you, Jeremy for like over 9 years. We weekly make the "boo, I'm here to scare you" joke from As Above so Below. Thanks for being such an awesome creator.
One thing I loved about Gene Wilder’s version of Willy Wonka is that you never really got to know his backstory & I was fine with that. As the saying goes: less is more 🍫
Maybe the next time we can get a succession version of willy wonka with willy denniying the right of Charlie to direct the factory and some marxists oompa loompas uprising against his colonialist opressor. Joaquin Phoenix would play an histerical and really scary willy wonka.
I with you all. There was no need for me to know an origin story. Not saying it won’t be good and I might even enjoy it. But it feels like an answering of question that nobody was really asking. At least I know I wasn’t.
The funniest part of this for me was when the director, Paul King said in interviews that Timothee's viral rap high school performance with his alter ego "Lil Timmy Tim" was the main reason why he got cast. And it you're wondering why it's funny, watch his viral rap video. It's hilarious and better appreciate the one zero zero zero trillion percent confidence he had for that performance 😂😂
It felt like I was watching a musical magic song and dance routine with this charming film. Timothee Chalamet really did good work here as the young Wonka, makes me wonder why I've not seen more of that talented star's work before.

Earlier in the movie when they were talking about the church and all the secret passageways, I thought “cool! A heist movie.” But then I kind of forgot about that potential element. and then, when it was revealed that the heist would be the third act, it really made me happy. But teach their own! Glad you enjoyed the movie.

This movie reminds me a lot to old times, it was bringing me to the past and present times, great combination to be in different times. The places were wonderful for the movie. Sweet, Charming Actors. Calah Lane is beautiful. I will buy the movie later to watch it several times every year around Christmas or holidays. It will be a favorite Movie in my library.

Just saw it yesterday. Enjoyed the hell out of it. Don't get many magical films like this. Originally, I was wondering why we even needed a film like this, but it definitely changed my mind. Great film and shows that there are still interesting stories to tell and not spend 300-400 million to get there.
I as a person who is over 30 enjoyed the film. It was both charming and delightful. I liked the subtle nods to the Gene Wilder version for the nostalgic element but also the new elements as well. I would like to see them expand on this if it does well and see more of the travels of Wonka and how in this version he learns his craft before hand travelling the world.
Yeah, I loved this film. I kind of "fan girled" my UA-cam review, which I usually never do.... but this film was such a good time. The kids in the theater with me were out of their minds watching it. One little girl behind me kept shouting out to Willy Wonka to "Watch out!" LOL. It sounds annoying, but it was totally adorable. So, yeah, their joy of the film infected me...
as much as I LOVED The original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and yet I'm curious and excited for this Wonka Prequel movie Great way to go to the movies this holiday season
Thank you, Jeremy for this review and as always, you made me laugh, which is always a gift regardless of the review itself. Though I have no need for a Willy Wonka “origin story”, and like the kind of “coyote” or trickster nature of the character, more the “you want to know how I got these scars?” kind of thing, rather than Joaquin Phoenix‘s JOKER (which, to be fair, after the second time I saw it, I also saw it as more of an “ unreliable narrator“ type of story with me being able to read more into it, as well as anybody else also able to read more into it than what appeared on the screen) or UNDER THE RED HOOD or BATMAN 1989 way of representing the character. Nevertheless, your review has me at least a little intrigued and since I still have an unlimited pass for the regal theaters at least for the next couple of months, I may check this out before my pass expires.
Never in my life have I ever been glad to be proven wrong about a movie. Wonka is a lovely movie with good songs, great pacing and enormous heart handled excellently by Paul King. Timothée Chalamet was great in the role and the movie overall is perfect for the holidays. 8/10 I'm really happy with Warner Bros rn. Aquaman 2 better not be shit.
I'd love to see a spoiler talk for Godzilla: Minus One at some point 👀 even though the film has the best Godzilla ever, somehow the best part of the film is the human story and I'd love to hear Jeremy talk about that.
@@tierrawilliams2672 you should've watched Minus One while it was still on IMAX screens 😭 but yeah easily Godzilla over Wonka. Wonka at home would be fine, but missing Godzilla on the biggest screen possible, you'd just be robbing yourself of one of the best blockbuster experiences in a long time.
Went in with low expectations, and was absolutely impressed. Best movie of the year for me, and I'm not even that into musicals. Amazingly delightful, great musical score, great acting, it hit all the emotional beats and was overall just a great experience. We saw it in IMAX and there were less than 10 people in the theater- could not believe it, especially given its a perfect movie for all age groups.
Whatched this movie, went without any expectations, just wanted to do something during weekend, not a Wonka fan or anything, but really enjoyed this movie, had smile on my face most of the time, positive and nicely made movie with good acting
I'm not a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fan, but I went to the cinema to see Wonka with my 2 friends today, and we had a pretty good time! Some of the jokes got a good laugh out of us, and my friends told me they went in with low expectations, but came out satisfied. Timothee's acting and voice was top notch, and I also loved the CGI and the colour palette. There were a group of small kids sitting in the rows before us, and they seemed pretty entertained too, and didn't mess around much or make noise. Overall I'd give a 7/10, just because I feel like the pacing and a bit of the plot could have been better but otherwise great fun, I recommend for families
Your lack of spoilers does not disturb me! Thank you! I wanted to watch an unspoiled video to see if I should watch the movie. I was not disappointed. Thank you, again
I liked it, but not better than the previous two. I agree with Jeremy that this is more in the kids side and this Wonka will be something new for the new generations, that's why this type of story.
What if the cheery vibe is an darker innuendo for what actually is happening? While the dialogue is right on the nose about Wonka whole stories, the cheery and optimism is how he perceived the world
I loved how you raised the idea of "things I normally wouldn't give a pass to, just seem to mix well". I totally agree: the story is somewhat hokey, but it has heart. Unlike most children's movies nowadays, I could happily sit down and watch it, with or without children around.
I remember when the Johnny Depp Wonka movie came out in 2005 and people raved about it and there were people who were even saying it was better than the original. Now, here we are 18 going on 19 years later and I never hear anything about that film anymore, but people still love the Gene Wilder one.
When I was growing-up in the 70's and 80's, the cultural catalogue for modern pop culture was about 30-40 years. The so-called Rock era began in the 50's and we were only a couple decades into it. Today, children and young adults of the same age have about 70 years worth of material to learn. This made me realise that each generation trims the fat so to speak. Each generation decides what is worth passing to the next and so on and so on until only the highlights remain - The Classics. So Gene Wilder moves to the next level where Johnney Depp does not.
@daniellogan-scott5968 I thought this way up until around 2014. Culture got stuck for various reasons and now media corpos are just endlessly rehashing old stuff, likely because they can schlep it to global audiences as “new” and still make money
nobody ever said that lol At most they said some things look better. Like elements of the factory looked way better in the Burton film (chocolate river anyone?)
Thought it was fantastic. Went to see it with my partner, leaving our baby with her grandma. Can't wait to see again in a few years when my child's old enough. Timothee Chalomet was amazing
I was highly skeptical of the early "commentary" channel reviews saying this movie was trash and I'm glad it seems I was right. I don't tend to trust those channels to begin with since their main goal seems to be being as hyperbolic as possible for views rather than being honest. Jeremy, though, has earned a good reputation for speaking the truth about what he thinks of a show/film, and while I don't always share the same thoughts I really appreciate that honestly. Personally, the minute I saw the Paddington guy was attached to this project my opinion did a complete 180 from "meh, why?" to "this is going to be the sleeper hit of 2023" and I'm really looking forward to seeing it
I saw it last night with my 3 boys. It was a great film. When it began, they started singing and I thought, oh no. But, boy was I wrong. The movie had me wanting to buy the movie soundtrack. It was comical and endearing. Such a great wholesome movie.
To answer your question about the MCN. Yes, they 100% still exist. And yes, still prey upon channels early on in their career. I got signed onto when I was about 50K subs and oh boy did that year of them taking money off the top without offering anything in return sucked. Over promise and never deliver is their guiding mantra. Was so relieved when I got out of my contract. Great video! Really loved Wonka!
I like the way the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film uses Willy Wonka as an enigmatic character, while Charlie is the main character you follow along on his journey. I don't like this modern fixation on trying to explore and explain a once mysterious and iconic character-"Just who was he? What was his background?" It takes away the magic and fun of wondering why they are the way they are. Not every story needs a prequel.
This movie actually is pretty good at keeping the mystique. Didn't explain wholey about who Willy Wonka is, guy is still living in a cookey crazy world and he seems to be the only one with magic. No explanations about how he got to be how he is, just a story about a bright eyed smart, if a bit gullible, entreprenuer starting his own chocolate business, meeting friends and enemies, and the ups and downs he experiences.
Further to Alain's comment, he doesn't end the movie the same person he is at the start of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (which is the actual name of the old film and book btw, not Charlie). So that part is also not over explained nor explained nor winked at.
@@alainbcdefghijk I saw reviews of people bashing this movie(giving it a 3/10 or even lower)not long after I watched it because it didn't go into depth about how he started so it is interesting to read your take on it
Totally agree, I came out of the film the other day saying it was better in the first half. When it became a heist film it didnt really feel like Wonka
What I loved about it was the trueness to Roald Dahl’s style with the cartoonish sequences but the most noticeable is the lack of explanation Wonka is a mysterious magical man and they don’t explain why, they leave it a mystery. The best aswell is the rhymes and word plays that are so true to the books I read as a kid.
That was actually what I was worried about. I wanted a Wonka with more edge. He's a fun loving guy who's very quirky...and might just kill someone randomly...but most likely not.
Wonka was an incredibly fun and clever movie that didnt feel like it was dumbed down to appeal to a general audience. Even the jokes that were too silly matched the magical larger than life tone. It was just a joy
For me, it was as if I was reading a Roald Dahl story. The director nailed Dahl’s aesthetic. The over the top caricature of the film reminded me of Uncle Oswald and his eccentric stories. I agree that they pulled just enough from the classic movie but not enough where it was pandering. Great film, can’t wait to buy it in 4K.
Wonka is supposed to be a humorous and yet slightly disturbing movie, but it is family-friendly at the same time. It should be like a PG version of Squid Games. However, what we got was a flamboyant woke musical devoid of any real stakes because we all already know Wonka will get his factory. A better movie would've been one that showed all the hard choices Wonka had to make to get his factory which inevitably made him a-social hermit.
I went in expecting this would be so goofy and childish that Timothée Chalamet would regret having done this movie, but came out deeply impressed and thoroughly satisfied by that movie going experience. I can be overly critical of movies, but my criticisms were almost exclusively a matter of personal taste and not about any glaring flaws. It’s a good movie and I have zero reservations about it.
We loved it! As you say, a family holiday movie for sure but it was bright and optimistic and the music was catchy. Charming and whimsical. All 3 kids absolutely loved it and want to go again for a 2nd watch.
Guys I respect your opinions, but here’s mine: what the hell did y’all watch?? Cause the movie I saw was a complete plot garbage heap, a psychedelic trip of a cgi ride, and nothing less than broken karaoke machine for unasked musical pieces. Seriously there was nothing memorable or enjoyable about this movie to me. And im sorry but the supporting characters were just BAD. The Oompa Loompa was the only redeeming quality of this movie. I enjoyed both the original, and the Tim Burton adaptions. And don’t get me wrong I GET that the original is a musical and cheesy and it’s magical to our nostalgic hearts but kids movies have adapted. I just didn’t realize I was walking into a movie that handles their audience like a daycare.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I enjoyed the songs and the characters. It just kept putting a smile on my face, and usually my kids aren’t that big into the musical type movies but they really enjoyed it too. We had a wonderful experience watching it

The bully characters, the abusive-to-children adults, the challenging of a system, the absurd body shapes and colors, a bunch of Dahl tropes all tied together in a story of whimsey and wonder.
I got that as well, I got vibes of boris bunce and bean from the chocolate cartel. Also the innkeepers reminded me of the twits
Family movie = Kids movie...
In my opinion a kids movie is a movie that only kids can enjoy while a family movie is a movie that everyone can enjoy
In my opinion, there is no such thing as kids movies. Those movies that were aiming at younger audiences should also entertain adults who's smart enough to enjoy the story for what it is. Wonka is an old IP, it's meant to entertain everybody, not just kids
@@800Ms-k6n agreed however I still feel there are movies that are unable to entertain adults.
@@n0ta_cat797 Like what? The Emoji Movie? I doubt kids enjoyed that movie too 😂
The little kids at our showing elevated the film tbh.
I had the same realization a while ago, great to see Jeremy still at it.
One thing I loved about Gene Wilder’s version of Willy Wonka is that you never really got to know his backstory & I was fine with that. As the saying goes: less is more 🍫
Same we never needed to know.
Ya cause the Tim Burton movie dragged ON WITH HIS BACKSTORY AND IT WAS TOO MUCH
Wonka hated spoil kids and was ok with kids
The funniest part of this for me was when the director, Paul King said in interviews that Timothee's viral rap high school performance with his alter ego "Lil Timmy Tim" was the main reason why he got cast. And it you're wondering why it's funny, watch his viral rap video. It's hilarious and better appreciate the one zero zero zero trillion percent confidence he had for that performance 😂😂
Hehe don't care hehe 😊

It felt like I was watching a musical magic song and dance routine with this charming film. Timothee Chalamet really did good work here as the young Wonka, makes me wonder why I've not seen more of that talented star's work before.
He is in Dune and is fantastic
It’s a totally different kind of movie, but, I LOVED him alongside Steve Carrell in the poignant father-son drama “Beautiful Boy” 💛
Merry Christmas Jeremy. Been watching ur videos since 2015. Thanks for being a huge part of my life
I expected to see a kids movie and have some fun, and that's exactly what I got. Timothee did great and I enjoyed some nostalgic moments. Enjoyable!
Seriously I feel like Jeremy is one of the few reviewers left that gives an honest, neutral review! Anytime a new movie comes out, Jeremy is who I go to!

People seriously underestimated this movie at first when it's clear that the tagline says "From The Director of Paddington". Like bruh, never doubted Paul King at this point. The man knows how to make a solid family entertainment and he was absolutely perfect for this material. After seeing it, I'm glad to say that this is another win for King. Can't wait to see what he does next 🙌
This is literally the first time I’m hearing that. Like that is a huge selling point and enough to get me to see the movie I really didn’t care about either way.
wonka was a good family movie, very entertaining

The movie just felt like a classic christmas family movie and I absolutely loved it!
Ill go see it. I liked both Paddington films and Timothée Chalamet is a really good actor.
Loved this review, Jeremy! I must say, it was CHARMINGLY DELIGHTFUL! 🤣
Jeremy's rhyme bit at the beginning was fantastic.
Except that "chocolate" doesn't actually rhyme. Sure.

A film of levitation
I really loved it! I had a huge grin on my face the entire time. I would also like to speak to the ending that you referred to, which might be a SPOILER for people who have yet to see the movie. Earlier in the movie when they were talking about the church and all the secret passageways, I thought “cool! A heist movie.” But then I kind of forgot about that potential element. and then, when it was revealed that the heist would be the third act, it really made me happy. But teach their own! Glad you enjoyed the movie.
Beautiful perform, Timothée with great talent, dancing and acting.
I enjoyed the film, I think the music is what I liked most about it. Pleasantly surprised by Timothy’s performance.
Great to hear you had an overall positive experience watching this film! Timothee Chalamet and Paul King sold me on the film instantly!
I remember watching Willy Wonka as a kid and that chocolate was the most delicious looking chocolate I've ever seen. I've had a lot of amazing chocolate in my life, even spent money to import some. But nothing has scratched the itch of wanting to bite into a fresh scrumdiddlyumptious bar.
As a resident of somewhere in the Northwest, Johns current wardrobe is an accurate representation of our holidays
A scarf? Now he’s just being excessively festive
Just saw it yesterday. Enjoyed the hell out of it. Don't get many magical films like this.
Originally, I was wondering why we even needed a film like this, but it definitely changed my mind. Great film and shows that there are still interesting stories to tell and not spend 300-400 million to get there.
I was excited to see this as soon as I heard Paul King was directing, I LOVE the Paddington movies!
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Thanks for the review!
as much as I LOVED The original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and yet I'm curious and excited for this Wonka Prequel movie Great way to go to the movies this holiday season
Great review as always, sir.
I am hoping to take the wife and kids to see this movie this week.

I'm really happy with Warner Bros rn. Aquaman 2 better not be shit.
I'd love to see a spoiler talk for Godzilla: Minus One at some point 👀 even though the film has the best Godzilla ever, somehow the best part of the film is the human story and I'd love to hear Jeremy talk about that.
Too late for him to do that
@@imanoldurango8213 uh, the film's been out like two weeks. and there's no statute of limitations on a spoiler talk lmao
I'm actually trying to decide between seeing that and wonka.
@@tierrawilliams2672i didn’t see wonka but i saw g minus one and it was awesome!! highly recommend :)
I was about to go to bed but then got the notification that Jeremy posted a new video 😅
My family and I had a good time! Made me smile and touched my heart.
Saw it today, it was very nice. Paul King is 3 for 3 in directing returning childhood classics.
I can't believe half way through the review Jeremy eats a fist full of chocolate covered maggots! The dedication!

I wanted to watch an unspoiled video to see if I should watch the movie.
I was not disappointed.
Thank you, again

I loved it. It was fun and funny with toe-tapping songs. It's a movie I will buy for my collection.
Reminded me of Greatest showman. So glad to see movie musicals are still being made well
Giving Wonka a back story is like saying that the Joker grew up in a orphanage. You rob the character his mystery.
Mystery is overrated!

Hey it's a pre world😊
I liked it, but not better than the previous two. I agree with Jeremy that this is more in the kids side and this Wonka will be something new for the new generations, that's why this type of story.
I really disliked this movie. This isn't Wonka, this is a different character.
What if the cheery vibe is an darker innuendo for what actually is happening? While the dialogue is right on the nose about Wonka whole stories, the cheery and optimism is how he perceived the world
Even Wonka took from the oompa loompa and then offered him a job at the end lol
I'm so baked I read that as Wakanda 😅
I loved how you raised the idea of "things I normally wouldn't give a pass to, just seem to mix well". I totally agree: the story is somewhat hokey, but it has heart. Unlike most children's movies nowadays, I could happily sit down and watch it, with or without children around.
I remember when the Johnny Depp Wonka movie came out in 2005 and people raved about it and there were people who were even saying it was better than the original. Now, here we are 18 going on 19 years later and I never hear anything about that film anymore, but people still love the Gene Wilder one.
People were saying positive things about the Depp movie? I definitely don't remember that. /shrug
The Depp movie has its appeal and is a tad more book accurate, if I recall correctly. But the Gene Wilder one gives people the warm and fuzzies.
@daniellogan-scott5968 I thought this way up until around 2014. Culture got stuck for various reasons and now media corpos are just endlessly rehashing old stuff, likely because they can schlep it to global audiences as “new” and still make money
nobody ever said that lol
At most they said some things look better. Like elements of the factory looked way better in the Burton film (chocolate river anyone?)
Thought it was fantastic. Went to see it with my partner, leaving our baby with her grandma. Can't wait to see again in a few years when my child's old enough. Timothee Chalomet was amazing
I loved Wonka! It’s positive, joyful and so entertaining!
Personally, the minute I saw the Paddington guy was attached to this project my opinion did a complete 180 from "meh, why?" to "this is going to be the sleeper hit of 2023" and I'm really looking forward to seeing it
Let me guess, those channels were saying that "hOw wOkE iT wAs".😂
I figured it was mid at best. But it was absolutely amazing

Boom! Captured my thoughts exactly. I'm also not interested in origin stories anymore. Let the mystique live.
Watched this last week here in India....honestly surprising how good it was. Left the theatre with a warm feeling inside
I'd like to see a Wonka movie made by Wes Andersen
Ooooooo, yeah
That was actually what I was worried about. I wanted a Wonka with more edge.
He's a fun loving guy who's very quirky...and might just kill someone randomly...but most likely not.
I will give it 9,5 of 10 for points. I loveeeee it!!!!!!!!
Wonka was an incredibly fun and clever movie that didnt feel like it was dumbed down to appeal to a general audience. Even the jokes that were too silly matched the magical larger than life tone. It was just a joy
I agree with you, I went to see it yesterday and it was Charmingly Delightful 😊
if clever means dumb. Movie is certainly not smart. It's quite bad writing, bad pacing, bad jokes even with great actors. It's not bad though
timothée chalamet did an amazing portrayal of wonka and I hoping there is a wonka sequel so we can see him reprise his role.
Exactly what I thought. I went in for a good wonka movie but didn’t think they’d manage to make it feel like a Dahl movie. Boy was I was wrong
“X-mas in the northwest, ladies & gentlemen”. Lol, the feels 🙏
It was a lovely movie, I was smiling the whole time!
My wife and I saw it in IMAX last night and we both loved it. Now time to see Paddington 2, never seen it.
In your opinion. Dahl's estate was on board for this version.
I agree they missed the mark on this.
What the hell was woke about it? Y’all just use that as a buzzword, lmao, the movie was awesome
DAMN JJ was spitting bars!!
Yessss got here early! Thanks Jeremy for the review!
