I also went into this movie with no expectations. My girlfriend and I went to see it this evening because we had a gift card that was about to expire. I loved every minute of it. I actually had a moment of realization about halfway through the film in which I realized how much I was enjoying my time at the theater just taking it all in. I haven’t had that experience in a long time.
Same! Had absolutely no expectations. I thought it would suck but my kids wanted to see it. Needless to say, my mind was blown. I haven’t like a movie this much in a LONG time. I honestly might go see it again, which I never do for movies.
Same for the wife and I. Haven't had a film experience this 'magical' in a long time. Originally, I was on the fence about it and didn't think we needed this film. Now, I'm glad they created it. A great time.
I miss movies like this. I wish the studios made more magical-fairytale-colorful movies like this + The Greatest Snowman. I love huge blockbusters in this type of genre. I can’t wait to see it. 🍫
I hope every Christmas we get feel good winter movies like The Holdovers, Wonka and The Greatest Showman instead of those cheap Hallmark Christmas romcom that's getting silly and boring. The movie was supposed to come out back in March and honestly seeing the trailer and the concept of what King is doing, I'd say it's best that they moved the movie to December in anticipating Christmas. I can't wait to see the movie
I was just thinking about how much I loved The Greatest Showman before I saw Wonka, and this movie gave me a lot of the same feeling I had watching that film. Love a cheery musical.
I took my mom today to a movie theater she's never been before (not a commercial one) and she loved the whole experience, LOLed a couple times, and both shed a couple tears, such a lovely family film, and Chalamet's performance is extremely captivating, my favorite performance of him has always been in "Call me by your name" but this is a close second
I dont know about all of you, but this movie (with all its flaws), was great! It is such a feelgood movie. No pandering, just pure whimsical, magical atmosphere. I also came to see it expecting to hate Timothy's acting. But, even that suprised me. He was just very endearing and cooky. Every actor was perfectly cast. People laughed, people cried, and after the movie was done I saw people around me just had this lil cute smile. It is a much needed movie this season. I absolutely love it.
Instead of casting actual actors with Dwarfism for the oompa loompas, they did a freaky CGI Hugh Grant. That's utterly disgusting and shameful to me, and guess what? It looks like they're going to be doing the same thing for the Disney Snow White live action remake.
@@tonyilias2561tbf, oompa loompa is too short for dwarfism actors to play too. And they technically don't exist in the world, unlike Disney, I really don't see them having any excuse for that
Went today to see Wonka . I didn’t want to see it . But my MoviePass’s credits went over 80 so I needed to lose a few because once you hit 100 it gets impossible to use your credits effectively during movie droughts which happen a lot lately .. I LOVED Wonka ! I had fun. I was just completely taken aback with how light hearted and touching it was .. it wasn’t stiff or pretentious.. I enjoyed the music and the dance numbers immensely . Which is odd because I swore off musicals .. I found myself crying towards the end .. I was so moved ..this made me feel light and childlike .. this reminded me what it was like to be young, naive and optimistic and having life come crushing down on you ..He is passionate and relentless and it really comes through so well. I highly recommend it for anyone who has a touch of whimsy and a need to reconnect for childhood
I also had low expectations and took my daughter to see it, because she is a big Chalamet fan. I loved it. What made Chalamet's performance so good to me was that he had this kind heartedness, but it wasn't sickly sweet...the movie is adorable, but I found Chalamet's performance genuine and honest. I loved him in the film.
I also liked how in certain moments of the film, he’d make these facial expressions that were like fleeting moments of insanity. Like you said, he was very kindhearted, and then you’d have a brief second where you’re like: “oh yeah that’s Wonka right there.”
@@theredalpha7290timothee was actually cast because of his old videos back in high school performing for people. he came off completely frenetic and crazy - in a positive way- in those videos that paul king thought he was suitable for the job. i read he was supposed to star opposite christian bale in pale blue eye but declined it because he wanted to be in wonka. i wanna see him do more comedic roles from now on, actually.
Paul King was the only person I could think of who could make this movie work, and it's really good to hear about its final quality. I've gone from cautiously curious to ready to buy a ticket. EDIT: Saw it in the cinema, was not disappointed. A Paul King venture through and through.
How many movies that come out each year can you say you actually "needed"? That phrase makes me roll my eyes every time, just like the overplayed "w" word.
As a brit, it’s so cool to see a lot of mainstream British comedians in the limelight for a larger audience. Mathew Baynton who was on a show called horrible histories during my upbringing is in this and that’s so cool for me personally. Obviously rowen Atkinson is well known but it’s nice to see him in another large project and Matt Lucas was also another standout for me growing up. I feel like the US doesn’t get the same exposure to British TV and film as we do to the US’s. Hence why a lot of you suck at our accents 😂
True but the BBC can get stingy whilst pbs seems to be the only open one to show that media. And while I enjoy Fawlty towers that doesn't mean I'm looking forward to the reboot
To be fair, your accents disrespect consonants and vowels. You just straight up leave out certain letters like R and T from words. We Americans actually enunciate each and every vowel and consonant, thus American English is actually more accurate to what's written (excluding certain regions like Boston, NY and places with distinct American accents, but just the general American accent is what I'm referencing). Your silly accents make no sense.
It was hit and miss for me. It looked fantastic and I like that it stuck to the book, but what killed it for me was Depp. Wilder might not have been 100% like the book, but at least he and the book version both had a bizarre charm. Depp was just disturbing.
You're not. Except for Charlie, I enjoyed the more book-accurate characterizations, including Grandpa Joe, and the vibrant cinematography, which is a lively update from the more subdued imagery of the 1971 classic.
That's exactly why I hope the movie must be good. Should it be a masterpiece like both Paddington movies? Maybe not, but I hope the movie doesn't get anything wrong either and knowing that it's almost Christmas, I definitely want this to be like some sort of feel good Christmas vibe movie that my whole family can enjoy and I hope it is
Watching Wonka’s passion for making chocolate reminded me about a time I was in Colorado. I was at this wine store and I spoke the to owner and when he spoke of his passion for wine making and tasting, I almost cried. It’s amazing how things we usually don’t attribute to “passionate” or “moving” can have deep meaning for some people.
@@LuisSierra42why are you saying that like it’s a fact? Lol movies are subjective. While you might think it’s fine, someone else might think it’s great.
You're glad it's good? You know Stuckmann just told us his opinion, he didn't state a fact, right? ^^; That film might still be complete garbage. And the dude is too much of a good audience.
Given how Wonka is a character defined by mystery, I was on the fence about a prequel. However, I'm cautiously optimistic, given Timothée Chalamet's talent combined with the cast's passion during these interviews and how the director and writer, Paul King made Paddington 1 & 2.
I think Timothee is talented.. but I wouldn’t call him a draw for a movie.. and if I’m being honest - I don’t find him particularly charismatic in his roles - I feel like the driving force of his hype is because he’s an attractive guy.
@@firstlast9846he was good in dune I just feel like the real problem is when there’s so many good actors it gets annoying seeing the same one over and over again in huge roles others could’ve gotten, I have the same issue currently with Margot Robbie I love her she’s good but im tired of her face😂
@@firstlast9846 I respect your opinion. However, while I agree he doesn't play charismatic roles very well, Timothée is at his best playing characters who are young, out of their element, and vibrant with energy. Hence, I enjoyed his performances in Call Me By Your Name and Bones and All. This energy draws me to his portrayal of Wonka since he was described with endless energy through gestures and handshakes in the book. Though Timothée's attractiveness helps him get roles, his career would plummet if he weren't talented, being solely an actor.
Saw "Wonka" in IMAX. This was the second time I saw this movie after the premier screening. In this dark age of pandemics, wars, and abnormal weather, this film offers the sweet hope of a "dream". Although it is a classic musical, it is directed by Paul King of "Paddington" fame. The charming characters, well thought-out foreshadowing, and various other elements are melted down and solidified to provide the best Christmas movie ever made. You will be enchanted by Timothée's sweet singing, dancing, and Oompa-Loompas. It will make you want to eat chocolate.🍫
I agree and felt the same. I wasn't interested in seeing it at all. I love the first film with Gene Wilder being my favorite Wonka movie. I went I see the 2005 one in theaters when I was a kid. Now, I'm actually excited to see it since the movie looks colorful and interested in the directing since I loved Paddington❤ I'm seeing Wonka next week with my cousins!
Paul King had this thing where he makes movies that aren't interesting on the page but make you wanna see it once it comes out for some reason. Paddington was supposed to be a gigantic failure like Alvin and The Chipmunks but ended up being so heartwarming and joyful, so I hope Wonka can do the same
This was a simple breakdown and wholesome review. Honestly didnt expect the movie to be so heartfelt. Looking foward to checking it out with the family
Great review, I had high expectations and wasn't disappointed. Loved the film and I'm a grumpy 58 year old man. Going to see it again tomorrow. I think however this movie does at the box office opening weekend its gonna have legs maybe similar to The Greatest Showman. It left me with the same warm happy feeling.
Chris, you have a power my guy. I was about to just waive this movie off, but your articulate nature honesty have put this one into the "try knowing its a musical" mentality.
I enjoyed this movie, I had to let go of reality as there were a lot of silliness in it that matched with everything so it's fine. I really loved the scene with Pure Imagination, that really brought out a lot of feelings for me.
I normally can't be arsed, but out of the blue I connected to THIS GUY cos I was looking for reviews on Wonka/Timothee'/British cinema and whilst I was listening to him I generally surmised that he cared about what he was saying, and gradually I cared more about the review. The review was very kind and intelligent, and I thought: I actually wouldn't mind seeing this (Wonka). I would probably only go to the cinema to watch this because I liked the review (by this guy). Good review. Well spoken without interruption. Very well spoken. I have to say as a Brit, Americans speak very very well about what they care about. They're better than we are, purely on their articulation of the language. OUR language!! BUT also (obviously) THEIR language. They, on the whole though (after many decades of tv), actually speak better than we do. Anyway, good review. Well articulated.
I laughed, I cried multiple times, I wanted to sing. This was one of the most magical experiences I have ever had in a theatre. Timothee Chalamet played the sheer mania of Willy Wonka perfectly, and the supporting cast was packed with comedic geniuses. It was bizarrely political, but in a delightfully farcical way. No hammers over the head. If you haven’t seen it, see it. If you have seen it, see it again.
Great review. Agreed with basically everything you said. Liked the first. Enjoyed the 2nd cus of how weird it was in the best way possible. And loved this one. One thing I haven’t seen many reviewers bring up is the incredible voices in this cast. I would love to see more films casting people for their unique voices. A very underrated part of acting. I’d rather a cool voice than a pretty face every time.
@@JayART71 And it absolutely did NOT flop. At the moment, it's at a worldwide gross of over $400,000,000 and it's got three more weeks before anything challenges it at the theater.
I really loved this movie, I didnt know it was from Paul king and the trailers didnt surprise me when i saw them so i have no expectations but man I really liked this film. It was so charming and beautiful. A really good film to watch with the family. That last part of the film really got me too 😢. The director really knows how to steal some tears from you with a good set up, beautiful message and good music ❤. Definitely worth the watch
Paul King had this thing where he makes movies with pretty mediocre marketing but ended up being a huge surprise once we see the whole thing in theaters lol
I enjoyed it. The fact that it wasn't just another cheap rip off of the original was a big plus. I felt like all of the characters were very likable and well written. I did find myself comparing several parts to other movies like Matilda and even Fantastic Mr. Fox at one point. I'd give it a solid B.
Chris you're the most honest movie reviewer, i've been watching your channel since the 2010s and its awesome you've always stuck to your guns and been straight up with people, thanks for all the work man stoked for shelby oaks!
From the trailer I was someone who thought the movie was unnecessary & Timothy a miscast yet I was totally surprised. Timothy was great & a unique Wonka which is what we need. Great to see Wonka in his early days instead of a remake for the third time. Some funny characters & Noodle story added to Wonka's nicely. Hugh grant also made a hilarious oompa loompa. The songs weren't the most memorable although a select few were good. Overall the movie provides a nice magical feel to it which is lacking in current movies. Overall 7.5/10 & now my 2nd best Wonka movie behind the original 1970's.
I'm not at all surprised to hear solid things about this. I remember when people were dunking on this movie from the trailers, and I thought to myself "This is from Paul King, the guy who made the PADDINGTON movies. Both of those are two of the best family films of the last few years. And people were dunking on THOSE movies before they came out too, due to the trailers for them!" So I was thinking Paul King's probably got this one. And it sounds like I may be right!
Paddington was supposed to be a failures standing side with Alvin and The Chipmunks movies but somehow King and Simon Farnaby made the movie so delightful and entertaining so I have hope that Wonka is going to be atleast good
I have to say, I find it weird when people dunk on Tim Burton's Wonka movie. I personally never minded it, as I found it as off the wall and weird as something you'd expect from a Roald Dahl book. And his work tended to be pretty fantastical as it was! Maybe because everyone was so attached to the 1971 film (and Gene Wilder's, RIP, iconic portrayal). Thing is, Burton wasn't remaking that film, and Johnny Depp wasn't doing an impersonation of Wilder. It was its own film that takes its own twist on the source material, and I was okay with that. It's better than Burton's Alice In Wonderland movie, THAT'S for sure!
This is such a nostalgic movie for me. I feel like as I kid I got a lot of zany movies like this in the early 2000’s. But everyone is afraid of taking risks now. Most films are colorful anymore. This was such a pleasant surprise
Went to watch today, and, with no exceptions, this is the movie for this season. Chalamet's performance was exceptional, touching as well as insane, and the other characters were incredibly charming. 🍫
The one thing that made the original film adaptation memorable was... Gene Wilder. His version of Wonka wasn't just a whimsical character full of life and joy here to spread goodwill through candy... there was a slightly crazed and sinister side to him as well. A live action Mad Hatter, a trickster who could do real damage when dolling out punishment if you were naughty and crossed him, all while devilishly enjoying your torment. And those filmmakers went with that... even showing some of his madness during the scene with the rather trippy ride in the boat with a vision of a chicken getting beheaded. They should have kept that somewhat darker tone and black humor in this prequel as well.
Gene Wilder said one of his conditions for joining that movie was that they keep the scene with the cane when he emerges from the factory and then does a forward roll in front of the crowd because from then on you never knew whether Willy Wonka was telling the truth. I always liked that.
@@Jumpyfoot Yup... that's what I meant by a trickster. Watch Wilder's subtle facial expressions when he's watching the kids. There is a sly bit of malevolence in his glances. He's not exactly a good guy. This prequel was supposed to be based on Gene Wilder's version of Wonka, but they play the role safe and don't explore his dark side.
Most definitely- glad to see someone In The comments who agrees. That is exactly what I feel about this movie. Though it’s hard to find a good replacement for wilder these days- this movie was way too fluffy and not subtlety dark and mysterious as the original- disappointment as expected…
Anyone else think this movie was crappy? Wonka had no mysterious witticisms like the original, if anything it was a precursor to the depp movie- which I didn’t enjoy that much. I had really hoped that they would do justice to the original film but of course that didn’t happen. They had to make it too poppy- and nothing original about it. I think it would have been better if they had a plot with a darker and mysterious/ wondrous/ imaginable undertone, much like the wilder version. This one was not that. And I think that’s what true wonka fans want- a trip back to their childhood- with less flat casting and. Someone at least comparable to gene wilder’s personality/ character.
I wasn’t even interested in this movie until your review and finding out it’s a Paul King movie. I love the Paddington movies and I’ll definitely watch this now. In fact I’ll force my kids to watch it with me 😊
The promotion for the movie really let it down, so we weren’t sure what to think. I adore Paddington, so went on those credentials and what an absolute treat of a movie this turned out to be. Genuinely adored it
A lot of people hated on this, and you're the first reviewer to express the nature of the film. It made me feel like a kid again, despite the flaws. It really created this world of inspiration that I loved. I also enjoyed the musical numbers, which made be the reason why a lot of individuals hated this film. Top 10 films of all time. I always get teary at the end
That chuckle was everything! 2:36 im glad you enjoyed it was skeptical but Timothy usally knows what hes doing. Paddington i hold close to me and my siblings growing up as we were read the books beofre bedtime to help with nightmares.
Very similar experience! I was very annoyed when I saw the trailer. By the end of the movie I was happily humming along with Pure Imagination! They didn’t take the audience for granted like sequel/prequels usually do. They earned our love and the right to use that iconic music. Well done! Will keep my eye out for more of this director’s work!
I hope this movie successful because usually during holiday season (especially Christmas) Disney often make a heartwarming family movie, but that was back in the day because in recent years they gave up on that in favour for MCU's Superhero spectacle and we all know the result of their latest movie...
Literally in the car on my way home from seeing it. I had almost zero desire to see it, but my wife’s family see movies as a Christmas tradition every year, and this was the option this year. I actually loved it. Some part of me was trying to remind me that I didn’t care, but the movie is so incessantly charming and fun, I kept finding myself caught up in it and laughing at the surprisingly funny moments. I didn’t cry, but I was damn close during the last ten minutes or so. It wasn’t perfect. Some of the humor fell flat for me, and the acting of the young girl was noticeably one-note. And I felt it could’ve been 10-15 minutes shorter. But none of that stuff will stick with me. I’ll remember this movie for a long while. It was extremely fun and I’d love to watch it again someday.
Wow man. Lots passion you pack in a 5 minute review. I was absolutely enthralled... I can absolutely understand why this is such a massive movie review channel.
I mean, the trailers didn't look bad. It looked like a very charming, colorful, light hearted Christmas movie with a ton of sweets (doesn't even really matter that it's Wonka). I miss such movies since Rowling went bananas.
I thought the trailer made the film look bad, but most people said the same thing about Paddington 1 and that film turned out fantastic. I generally try not to let trailers influence whether I see a movie or not.
I was scared to even watch your review for a while because I value your opinion so much and I was afraid you wouldn’t like it. But you did! It’s my favorite movie right now. I’ve seen it almost 10 times in theaters. I just love how fun and silly it is 😊
Thanks for the review! I tought it was the best Disney vives of the Disney's movies done this year... and it's not a Disney movie. Some directors and excecutives from that company should see it and learn a lot of pacing an humor for movie made to be entretained.
I never saw Paddington 1 and 2 but I need to. Maybe I'll watch them tomorrow, since I always hear great things about them so I'm curious. I planned to give the Wonka movie a shot before learning any back news so glad to hear it has the Stuckmann approval. Thank you for the insight!
I just saw it. Very entertaining and a perfect family film! Should become an iconic family film to be seen again and again. The supporting cast is fantastic.
I think part of the problem for this film was that the trailer looked like dogshit. Bad marketing usually means the film is doomed to fail at the box office but if you actually watch them, you can sometimes be pleasantly surprised.
Am I taking crazy pills!? My wife and I just walked out of this film, and we thought it was absolutely DREADFUL! The writing was horrendously bad, the acting was cringe inducing, and the characters were immediately forgettable. I do not understand why people are wooing over this… are our expectations so low these days? The little girl could not act her way out of a wet paper bag in a flood. Every bit of this movie made both me and my wife cringe. Did we watch a different movie to everyone else…? It was truely THAT bad.
Went today with few friends, was meant to watch Napoleon but tickets sold out so we went to watch Wonka and honestly I loved this movie, didn't expect it to be this enjoyable, if you're thinking of watching it, you definitely should. It's great film.
I just posted this on Dan Murrell's review and thought I'd share it here too. I'm going to see Wonka next week with my little dog. You read that right, we have frequent dog-friendly screenings at the Picturehouse cinemas in London. Cooper and I also saw Barbie together this summer, and the pooch slept perfectly through it. I expect no less from our Wonka screening. 😊🐾🍫
Wow!! I had zero expectations for this but now you make me wanna see it! I really really like whimsical movies! This has gotten me intriguied!!!! I'll tell my grandma about it, too, since she loves musicals! Maybe we can go!
SAME! Went randomly to a Cinema before New Year's Eve, so there's not much people around, Wonka was the one available right on the spot; watched it with zero expectations and surprisingly I liked it. As a photographer, the cinematography is a 10, good story-line, I laughed when Mr. Bean showed up randomly, I was oddly smiling on few scenes. Overall, I was inspired to dream and be driven as cheesy as that sounds. Wholesome and good for family. 10/10
I grew up on the original 1971 movie with Gene Wilder. I pushed hard for my high school to do an adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for my Middle School Play, relished the Wonka Bar and Golden Ticket my parents somehow managed to get me get for Christmas one yer (and have a Golden Ticket christmas tree ornament), and I even bought a Wonka Bar chocolate mold for when I get the itch to try making my own chocolate. I fking LOVE the Gene Wilder movie. And like you, I went into Wonka with the lowest of low expectations. And I think that primed me to absolutely love this movie far more than I would have otherwise. It was such a delight and filled me with a happiness that I haven't had in theaters in a while. It is great, and now I have no excuse to not check out the Paddington movies and watch for Paul King's other work.
right?! i found myself with a goofy ass smile 5 minutes in and it never left my face, like i literally had to compose myself and tone the grinning down because it was embarrassing as hell if i got caught by others around me lookin this happy to be watching a children’s movie lmao
Just saw this movie a few minutes ago. I, too, had low expectations. But, Wonka was great! I laughed a few times. The humor and the visual effects are quite entertaining. Timothee Chalamet did an excellent job. It’s a very delicious movie. 🍫
It reminded me of how I felt watching the first one for the first time, and movies like Annie and Mary poppins. It was warm, funny, and wholesome. Great work!
I feel like people forget that Willy Wonka isnt supposed to be wholesome. That feeling you had that Johnny Depp's version might kill you? Thats how hes supposed to be. Thats how he was in the book. That darkness is what makes Roald Dahl's writing so fun,and its exactly what i felt was missing when i saw the trailer for this.
The Wilder Wonka is the nerd power fantasy. The Depp Wonka is the nerd reality. People see too much of themselves in his Wonka and they don’t like it. 😂
Wonka 2023 is supposed to be optimistic and fun, he's a young willy wonka, BEFORE he became cynical oh god what don't you all understand about this? it's a prequel
I'm not entirely sure that Wilder Wonka DIDN'T kill all those kids. He SAYS they will be alright (well, actually, he doesn't really even say that, he just says they might be OK). We never see any of the kids or parents again after they do their thing.
Just came back from the theater and I agree 100% with your review. It's a silly yet adorable, feel good movie. I specially loved the fact that the villains were never perceived as dangerous so you were always at ease, not feeling dreaded at any moment, even though they attempted literal murder. That's not easy to pull off. Wonka was also ignorantly naive and positive and his great spirits were passed onto you. Timothee absolutely killed the performance, I also had doubts going into it after watching him on Dune and his okay-ish performance. I got pleasantly surprised by his great acting on this movie.
Paul (his character in Dune) is described as stoic and unemotional all throughout the book, so he played that. meaning the role as it’s described in the source material 👍🏼
Dune is one of my favorite movies of all time. I read the books several times after watching that movie. Paul is exactly the same paul in the books. He killed that role.
Wasn't a fan of the movie at all. Wasn't a fan of the songs, or Timothy's singing. Wonka is supposed to be clever and menacing... Didn't feel that at all. I may be in the minority.... Just left a bad taste in my mouth.
Chris, I was also very surprised at this film. When I saw the trailer tbh I rolled my eyes and thought this would be lame and uninteresting, especially not being a big Timothee Chalamet fan. But nevertheless I gave the movie a chance and I’m really glad I did. I enjoyed the whimsical nature of it, and I could tell it was more family friendly by that and the pacing. It was enjoyable to see this character in a different setting and situations and I really liked the songs too. I got a little teary eyed at a few moments during the film and that at the end full on had a cry with the sung message of “imagination is your liberation.” Honestly I’d love to watch it again and will definitely be listening to the soundtrack 👏🏽☺️
Warner Brothers is releasing 3 films this December; Wonka, Aquaman The Lost Kingdom and The Color Purple remake. They're clearly hoping to dominate the December season
I just took my 5 year old son to see this. It was his first movie theater experiecne. I am so, so glad we chose this one. One's first theater experience should be something as heart warming and fun as this film. I also had moderate expectations but came out of the film just so disgustingly happy. Everyone was. We need more films like these. Not genre or topic, but films that just make people happy. This movie remineded me of why I love filmmaking. I think Paul King is right up there with Christopher Nolan. Not in their styles or approach, but in their share love of the medium.
Nothing will ever top Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. That being said, I don't have a problem with their being another Willy Wonka movie as long the writer and director's heart is in the right place. Watching your review has really encouraged me to go see this when it comes out.
I just watched it, and really loved it. Huge fan of the original, this hit the spot as a new interpretation. I think Timothee Chalamet brought another dynamic to Wonka, one who was impacted by a loving mother and their particular up bringing. You could hear and feel the wonder in the tone of his voice and delivery. I wanted to know if anyone noticed the nods to the original? The contract and length and fine print, almost his life experience is why in the OG he had such a long contract the kids had to sign. His washing invention, nod to the WonkaWash. Anyway, I really had fun with it, and had chocolate while watching lol
I’m very excited for this film. I love the Gene Wilder film, it’s one of my favorites. The Burton/Depp version was bad which is disappointing because I love their other collaborations. I was surprised by the pushback this one has been getting considering Paul King has a great track record and so does Timothée Chalamet who’s one of the best actors of his generation. Wholesome, sweet, and whimsical? Can’t wait!!!
I LOVED this movie and also shed tears at the end. The singing and songs were great. I went just to see Timothée Chalamet, but found myself absolutely loving this movie.
This movie is actually great especially seen through the lense as a prequel to the gene wilder classic - this film will bring audiences in again and again and I shead a tear too at the end and don’t care

I think you meant The Greatest SHOWman 😅
I was just thinking about how much I loved The Greatest Showman before I saw Wonka, and this movie gave me a lot of the same feeling I had watching that film. Love a cheery musical.
I took my mom today to a movie theater she's never been before (not a commercial one) and she loved the whole experience, LOLed a couple times, and both shed a couple tears, such a lovely family film, and Chalamet's performance is extremely captivating, my favorite performance of him has always been in "Call me by your name" but this is a close second
aww
And they technically don't exist in the world, unlike Disney, I really don't see them having any excuse for that
Cooky or cookie?
@Poolinwastaken kooky? Sorry, I'm a self-taught English speaker.
I've seen more whimsy in old bread.
I absolutely loved this movie, an instant classic. Essential holiday season viewing if you ask me.

@JustMatty2023 The phrase "if you ask me" is for the future, not past

Did we need any movie ?
Well it's
An origin story so yes we needed one as we don't have such a film until now .
Especially Olivia coleman...I became a fan of her after watching Hot fuzz..her teeth stands out.😊
To be fair, your accents disrespect consonants and vowels.
@@have_a_good_day420mad🥺
horrible histories aired in canada thankfully. I loved that show growing up, even today it holds up pretty well.
I must be the only person on the planet who really loves the chocolate factory remake DESPITE all it's flaws...
It was hit and miss for me. It looked fantastic and I like that it stuck to the book, but what killed it for me was Depp. Wilder might not have been 100% like the book, but at least he and the book version both had a bizarre charm. Depp was just disturbing.
Right? I love it!
Yep...you are. That movie is very bad.
Nope, I love it too. Depp is hilarious in that movie.
You're not. Except for Charlie, I enjoyed the more book-accurate characterizations, including Grandpa Joe, and the vibrant cinematography, which is a lively update from the more subdued imagery of the 1971 classic.
I just love when we see Chris laugh at the end of a script take. Keep leaving those in the edits Chris!
This is made behind the team from Paddington 1+2 so it does give this more credibility than the project looked on paper as well as the fantastic cast.
That's exactly why I hope the movie must be good. Should it be a masterpiece like both Paddington movies? Maybe not, but I hope the movie doesn't get anything wrong either and knowing that it's almost Christmas, I definitely want this to be like some sort of feel good Christmas vibe movie that my whole family can enjoy and I hope it is
I was pretty excited about this one from the very first teaser. The sets are stellar. We cannot wait to see it.

Watching Wonka’s passion for making chocolate reminded me about a time I was in Colorado. It’s amazing how things we usually don’t attribute to “passionate” or “moving” can have deep meaning for some people.

@yuro5833 - He was alright in Dune.. I felt he was bit…. Idk wooden?
@@firstlast9846 I respect your opinion. However, while I agree he doesn't play charismatic roles very well, Timothée is at his best playing characters who are young, out of their element, and vibrant with energy. Hence, I enjoyed his performances in Call Me By Your Name and Bones and All. This energy draws me to his portrayal of Wonka since he was described with endless energy through gestures and handshakes in the book. Though Timothée's attractiveness helps him get roles, his career would plummet if he weren't talented, being solely an actor.
@@yuro5833 Good point.
Definitely the most "Disneish" warn sweet comedy of the year, perfectly suit for family and Christmas. Just wish there was more Oompa Loompa parts.

Chris, you have a power my guy. I was about to just waive this movie off, but your articulate nature honesty have put this one into the "try knowing its a musical" mentality.
It's an absolute masterpiece. You're going to love it!
This COMMENT was well articulated! 🙌🏼 Also, did you like the movie?
I laughed, I cried multiple times, I wanted to sing. This was one of the most magical experiences I have ever had in a theatre. Timothee Chalamet played the sheer mania of Willy Wonka perfectly, and the supporting cast was packed with comedic geniuses. It was bizarrely political, but in a delightfully farcical way. No hammers over the head. If you haven’t seen it, see it. If you have seen it, see it again.
I took my mom to see this and we both absolutely love it! It was just so delightful and light hearted, this movie just made us so happy😊
Great breakdown. I’m probably going to go see it in theaters now. BTW, can’t wait for Shelby Oaks. Your cast looks phenomenal.
It's sooo good. Enjoy!
Yes! I couldn't agree more!!
Timothee is the perfect choice for young Wonka. Even if the movie flops, his charisma can elevate it.

Paul King had this thing where he makes movies with pretty mediocre marketing but ended up being a huge surprise once we see the whole thing in theaters lol
I knew it. Never underestimate the power of Wonka.
It's beautiful. Uplifting!
I enjoyed it. The fact that it wasn't just another cheap rip off of the original was a big plus. I felt like all of the characters were very likable and well written. I did find myself comparing several parts to other movies like Matilda and even Fantastic Mr. Fox at one point. I'd give it a solid B.

Glad that he didn’t stoop and become a shill for big chocolate 🍫
A good film made by people who cared about it, and their craft, is all I can really ask for. Might have to see this with family.
Paddington was supposed to be a failures standing side with Alvin and The Chipmunks movies but somehow King and Simon Farnaby made the movie so delightful and entertaining so I have hope that Wonka is going to be atleast good
You are correct. This film is a masterpiece. You're going to love it!
Yeah, I personally love the Tim Burton version!
I still don't understand how whipping a cow makes whipped cream.
The best one for me
I hate the dentist father backstory they added in. The rest of it was ok but that backstory was so awful it killed the rest of the movie for me.
Alice in Wonderland is cool
This is such a nostalgic movie for me. I feel like as I kid I got a lot of zany movies like this in the early 2000’s. But everyone is afraid of taking risks now. Most films are colorful anymore. This was such a pleasant surprise
Went to watch today, and, with no exceptions, this is the movie for this season. Chalamet's performance was exceptional, touching as well as insane, and the other characters were incredibly charming. 🍫
There were a few key moments where he made the craziest facial expressions, it was great lol
I completely agree.

Totally agree.I needed it ❤
Watched it today, didn’t expect nothing. Shed a tear, very nice movie
I must be living in a clown world where everyone things this movie was good and that Timothée can act.
You're not in a clown world, you're just in the minority, and that's fine.

Saw it last night. By far one of the best films I've watched this year. Great job to thr entire cast.
Not too high on this one since we already got TWO wonderful adaptations but I’ll still give it a chance!

"I thought that Charlie's version of Willy Wonka would murder me"
You said that as if Wilder's Wonka wouldnt.
And I think that primed me to absolutely love this movie far more than I would have otherwise. right?! i found myself with a goofy ass smile 5 minutes in and it never left my face, like i literally had to compose myself and tone the grinning down because it was embarrassing as hell if i got caught by others around me lookin this happy to be watching a children’s movie lmao
Just saw this movie a few minutes ago. I, too, had low expectations. But, Wonka was great! I laughed a few times. The humor and the visual effects are quite entertaining. Timothee Chalamet did an excellent job. It’s a very delicious movie. 🍫
Don't dismiss Depp's Wonka - the movie is actually pretty damned good in it's own way. Of course Wilder rules the role. :D
Everything in that movie is good, except Depp lol
That's why I'm not interested. Looks like it's more sugar than spice. The most boring way to do the Wonka origin, if it must be.
@@torinju exactly. That's how the book was, and it's awesome.
Paul (his character in Dune) is described as stoic and unemotional all throughout the book, so he played that. meaning the role as it’s described in the source material 👍🏼
btw sorry my english is real bad it’s not my first language
Dune is one of my favorite movies of all time. I read the books several times after watching that movie. Paul is exactly the same paul in the books. He killed that role.
the villains were literally trying to kill them….
how was his performance in dune just okay-ish? Might be your opinion but you're making it seem like that's the general consensus
Great review! I absolutely loved the movie! Such a beautiful surprise in many many ways!
Wasn't a fan of the movie at all. Wasn't a fan of the songs, or Timothy's singing. Wonka is supposed to be clever and menacing... Didn't feel that at all. I may be in the minority.... Just left a bad taste in my mouth.
It was completely atrocious
Someone using “Paddington” and “phenomenal” in the same sentence is definitely a choice…
We need more movies like this that are just feel good
true
So basically people cutting trailers for movies these days should be fired 7 times over
idk the second trailer for it was alright, much better than the first one for SURE
Warner Brothers is releasing 3 films this December; Wonka, Aquaman The Lost Kingdom and The Color Purple remake. They're clearly hoping to dominate the December season
In an age of sarcasm and irony, it is a joy to encounter sheer delight.
Yes! It's so good. You will love it
I just took my 5 year old son to see this.
Chris is a sellout, why would you take his opinion seriously at all
@@HunterMagunterYet here you are 😂
@mariod1547 yep, reading comments from people like you that value this clowns opinion
watch it. bring your whole family. for sure you all gonna enjoy it. happy holidays
Agreed, nothing will ever top the original Willy Wonka
Same, what a masterpiece. and very re-watchable. Instant classic.
