Ultimate Toyota Tacoma build episode 6! Rear Coil over Conversion!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 січ 2022
- Today our Toyota Tacoma gets a BIG upgrade! A homebuilt rear 3 link with Bilstein coil overs. This job isn't for everyone. You need to have a very good understanding of what you are doing and how to use basic fabrication tools. But if you are good with a grinder and decent with a welder, these types of projects are great! Having a smooth ride and lots of wheel travel is a must for any off-roader. From rock crawling to overlanding we ALL can benefit from increased comfort and capability offroad. Educate yourself on these systems, have fun nerding out on the details and most of all enjoy the video! Even if this doesn't inspire you to build some one off suspension components I hope it inspires you to get more involved with the evolution of your truck! Don't let your mechanic have all the fun!

I’m a disabled combat vet. Just got into the off-road scene, I bought an 01 Nissan Xterra that I want to build myself. Working on projects helps me with my ptsd. I’ve been glued to your videos for weeks now, I have no experience on building custom rigs like this but I feel that with your videos and attention to detail I can make my Xterra a beast on the trail, I’m a carpenter, bought a welder to make steel furniture with wood and glass. I saw videos of you building bumpers, rock sliders, and all type of cool stuff. I just want to thank you for taking the time to explain in detail and how thing work for complete newbs like myself. It gives me motivation to build things outside my comfort zone, but like I said, with your videos I fell that I can build this myself. So thank you, you have no clue how excited it is for me to learn from you, and your builds. I’m sure there are plenty of people out there that fell the same way. I never comment on any videos I watch, but I feel that I have to thank you and tell you that I have much respect for what you do and what you can build. You are an amazing builder and I hope to learn a lot more from you. Thank brotha, and god bless.
Awesome, I tell people all the time if your interested in this stuff just dive in there are a million instructional videos on line , the best way to learn is just do it , you'll make mistakes we all do but that's how ya learn, good luck I know ya got it though just by your attitude towards it you'll be fine
Love how you always explain everything in detail. Helps alot with new fabricators
I'm happy to help 👍
Same thing I was about to say I plan on solid axle swapping my Nissan on the front and Changing the back to a 4 link and this has helped allot
@@liampatterson9396
I'm doing the same on my 98 tacoma, I'm tired of ifs and leaf springs , I want it all gone lol, I've even by toying with the idea of building a completely new chassis , it would be easier in the end rather than dealing with a rusty frame that has been patched already,
Man, this is the video that I would have wanted to be longer! This is the exact thing I love seeing. Custom suspension setups and all of the explanation that goes behind it. Wish that video was 3 times as long. It definitely looks super badass and I’m hoping to see a lot more of it in the future.
Absolutely agree
Same here I could watch this stuff all day
Young man, you are an ace when it comes to welding. I enjoy watching the cutting, shaping and welding to reveal an outstanding finish product!!!
So much work went into this video! Thank you Nate. I don’t fabricate at all, he’ll I don’t even own a Taco haha I have a Chevy Colorado ZR2, but I love your shit.
Thanks man! Glad to see you are digging the videos 👊
I love to see a three link in the rear. This thing is turning out great.
When talking about the angle of the panhard bar, you need to consider the roll center will be where the panhard bar crosses the axle centerline. So its angle and height will affect how the rear of the chassis rolls. Packaging is often the primary driver, but roll center should be a consideration. I don't know how in depth you got on the theory side, i.e. roll axis, anti-squat, pinion angle change through travel, etc. I know you are on a deadline here.
Also, if the panhard bar is angled at ride height then the side to side (lateral) forces it transfers will be partly converted to vertical forces and you could have a jacking or squat effect when cornering depending on if you turn left or right and the direction the bar is angled. This is primarily a concern on road, however, where speeds are higher, but it could come up off road on side slopes or off camber situations.
I am surprised you didn't fish mouth the boxing plates welded to the inside of the frame. The fish mouth gradually increases the rigidity of the frame while a straight section increases the rigidity all at once. The straight sections should be more prone to cracking in the corners, but that doesn't necessarily mean cracks will form. It all depends on the forces.

Thank you for this comment. Definitely things I’ll consider when doing my own 3 link on my Tacoma
I appreciate the time and explanations on the white board, great job and video
Thanks brother 👊
Gonna be a heck of a rig. Make that deadline....
Love these shop vids!
Thanks! Lots of work but I love making them 👍
Awesome build man, good info on building suspension…even if I think you’re crazy cutting up a brand new truck..lol. Thanks for the upload..:)
Thanks for watching buddy 👊
Fabulicious! One man band busting knuckles and sharing the blood. Keep up the determination!
I was sitting here trying to figure out the layout of the 3 link and then you cut to the explanation of the different suspension options. Thanks for taking the time to show us!
Absolutely 👍 I'm happy to share this type of info brother
You do a fantastic job of explaining these design/setup concepts. I really appreciate those whiteboard clips because learning about suspensions geometry and layout is so important for diagnosing problems with your rig and not paying someone else tons to do it for you after a tow truck bill. Plus I am just a firm believer in the fact that if you understand your vehicle, you have a better appreciation for mods and why something is designed the way it is. Great work! I am trying to incorporate this into more of my videos as well. You are killin' it.
Today we are really going use the factory warranty as a drop cloth, cause wielder go, Bzzzzzzzzz!
great simple explanation of a complicated topic. this channel is loaded with high quality information for FREE!
Awesome as usual Nate, there's only good times ahead, you have done massive amounts of work to get'er done , I know the dates of KOH 2022 my buddy in California, his friend is planning on going to watch it, you'll get finished and have a blast doing it, Cheers Nate ❤
king of the hammers here in sunny california. come and join us
I am an experienced fabricator. Having said that, I learn something every time I watch your show. Keep it up Nate...or...should I say Keep it (wheels) down.
Thanks brother I appreciate 🙏
Great reference videos for us Taco guys. Thanks!!!
Those 38’s look huge compared to the 40’s on your TJ, I guess it’s the camera FOV or something, lol.
The bfgs measure small and I think the mile stars measure big so they are very close to the same size 👍
I always thought you were going to do a rear trailing arm suspension type like a prerunner. But is awesome. Simple and pratical! Keep up!!!
If I wanted to go fast in the desert with this truck I would definitely do Trailing arms. But I would have to box the entire frame first lol. Rock crawlers are easier to build 👍
@@DirtLifestylerock crawlers are cooler also, anyone can just go fast LOL, it takes skills to rock crawl successfully at least lol
Great videos by the way
I loved the music you used in this video, it was very creative
Thank you!
You do a insane amount of work between getting the video and doing the work. Great job on doing both perfectly!
In the last 1 to 1.5 year watching this channel,l I learned SO much. Thank you for making the videos the way you do.
Never been jealous of a UA-camr until this taco project. Love seeing the process and every video!
So stoked for this build. You’re doing what I wish to do to my third gen over the years. It’s nice to hear your thoughts on these upgrades from the perspective of a beginner to know if it’s worth investing in all the equipment and tools to fabricate (or even to just install my own gears/pinions). Keep up the great work man
This is an awesome blueprint for many future Tacomas.
Excellent work Nate. I like how it’s is 100% custom but maintains the function you need in the bed of the truck. Excited to see this thing tearing up trails.
Dude, you are the GOAT. I love your videos. I actually stayed up until 2am last night watching your Land Rover axle build in prep for my rear axle build for my 4runner. Then this popped up! Im doing a radius arm setup on mine and hopefully the RCLT in the future. Your videos are always entertaining and very insightful. Thanks!
Big props on your recent builds and your video production has hit next-level quality. Keep it up! Always love watching.
Great work Dude. Such a fascinating process to watch, really enjoy your builds.
Thank you!
This is the exact video I wish was longer. Lol. I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not I want to do 63’s on or figure out linking my Tacoma. I never thought to use the front leaf spring mounts as link mounts, and this really has me leaning towards links.
Your explanations are very clear to understand. Thank you
Can’t wait to see this Tacoma fully built 🤙🏽
Can't wait to see you crawling with it...!!! Nice job... Keep up the good work...!!!
This is just so cool!
And fantastic info for new fab work folks.
Can't wait to see how it turns out
Killer work as always nate! That Belt sander attachment for the angle grinder is something I now need to order!
Can’t wait to see her in action wheeling alongside Big Mike’s rig 🤙🏽
Super stoked for you Nate nice work!!!
This is one awesome build. We'll thought out and we'll explained. Keep it up.👍
Still can't believe they don't come coil cab factory these days!
This is the true pursuit and follow through on a dream of mine. Keep up the amazing work! I know it’s not easy, but it is worth it!
Quality fab work, quality video work, quality explanation of the process. We'll done sir!
I love how bump stops played out!! Nice work and keeping it simple Nate!
Great Build ... Thank you
Big job on a new truck Nate, really enjoying this build.
Badass vid Nate. Pro pro quality. Spent yesterday at browns camp! Great day!
I can’t wait to see it complete and on the trails!
No worries on the Toyota warranty. I'm sure they'll still honor it. Thanks for the content Nate!!!
I love this build. Can’t wait to see it under the truck.
Man - what a wicked build!
Damn I wish we were neighbors or related so I could learn your masterful ways
Loved the video! The fab/build videos you do are so good. Wished it was longer but with the time window you have to build this, it is understandable that shorter videos may need to be done. So you have the time needed to finish the build.
Love the videos. This is something I have been considering doing on my truck. Can't wait to see it finished and how it performs. Also have my eye on the RCLT for a while now. Great job
Awesome built, you make it look and sound so easy. 👍
Hmmm. I never thought about a 3-link with a track bar for my MJ. Now you have the wheels turning in my head. As always, thanks for the great content Nate!
Love Mig Welder Sound!!!
Man you made that look way too easy! Nice work
That was cool...really cool. Super cool. tHanks for the advice on what to avoid in suspension kits.
RCI makes a diff skid. Not as beefy as the one you installed. Build is gonna be sick!
Man I cannot wait to see this finished!
I’m new to your channel and am really learning a lot from your shop videos. Keep up the great work!
Coming along great
Love watching your channel, keep it up.
It appears you didn't extended the axle side track bar mount up so that the track bar sits more parallel to level at static? I know on 4r this greatly helps correct that axle arc on compression.😊🤙🏾
That was to clear the diff but again I like the performance (in theory) of a bar at a slight angle. But in anycase you wouldn't feel the difference on the trail lol.
Great video as always, gives me lots of ideas for my 16 Tacoma
Hope you go over with more detail the coilovers you selected and Down travel and up travel number/ideas. I understand it's a ton of fabrications but some more about the parts and pieces and thoughts would have been nice over another explanation of 3 link vs 4 link. Thanks for showing the fun your having. Poor new tacoma all chopped up.
Your fab skills are so impressive!
Cool stuff Nate, your the man.
Thank you! I'm honored 👊
Coming right along Nate!!
Mad skills sir, much respect for your obvious talent. It will be interesting to see how the frame behaves with the (although very small), boxed section...in the spot it's located. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Oh man. Love it !
Thats gonna be the way that most tacomas will be built this year
awesome build!!
Love that the jeep tire flat 😂
Blowing Toyota guys minds by not running leafs in all 4 corners
I love the work as always. I can't wait to put a 1VD-FTV in the 2016 we have here. But now the owner and one of my business partners has spotted the twin turbo version of the 4.0.
As always, well done!!
Thanks for explanation.
Cheers. 🍻
Fantastic video
Bro, I love your channel so much 👍🏻
Killer video as usual
Great stuff!👍
Thanks!
Been looking in to linking the rear in my 91 4runnner never thought about using the lefe spring hanger an lower mounts i think im going to steal that idea
Trail gear has a rear diff cover for these, and truss wise Outlaw Overland in Kent, Washington makes a top truss. On my truck I just used a Ruffstuff 79-95 axle back truss, and made it fit. Its a little narrow, so just need to extend out to the wheel bearing surface someday.
Love the build man. Plus it is pretty sweet you are a local to me. I. Right here at PLU. Tacoma/Spanaway. I have a 94 toyota and love the dirt. Keep it up
Very nice video and just the right amount of details to keep new and experienced happy. Great job! Though it does make me want to lift my Taco more (currently at 2") - That's not good. hahaha
Dude thank you for the whiteboard!
Fruits of your labor 😃
Stoked to see this rig complete. Hoping to be able to shake you hand at KOH. I’m a local in that area and would love to see this rig or even wheel with it (on the east stuff lol, my first gen sequoia is no where near this level)
Great build! With respect to the panhard angle, I drove for years (2000 4runner) with an angled panhard bar after lifting. The arc causes the rear of the vehicle to push and pull diagonally. This is noticed on road. I did a drop and it improved a lot. The more flat at ride height, the better. Then the arc is more centered. Most don’t notice it until it has been corrected and leveled.
I need to convert my rear suspension to a 3 link and free up the binding of the factory 4 link.
The problem with you is you do amazing fabrication projects and make it look as easy as changing the spark plugs. 😜
Thanks I learned a lot 😌
Get it Nate. 🤙
Awesome build man, love the channel! I believe runnin4tacos just came out with a rear dif cover guard! Something to look into!
Amazing Vid, Tnx Man!
That's badass. I'd love to 3 link my F150 someday. A prerunner is the dream but the reality is it's just a daily/camping rig.
TACOZILLA! gj on your transition.
You are one BAMF. Wish I had your skills.
Great video man! I’d love to do this and the RCLTHD to my tacoma!
Excellent work. Hope you get some GoPro shots underneath of the suspension moving while rock crawling. Cheers.
