    if you need to remove corrosion in future a more gentle method is to use clear spirit vinegar that's been boiled and then just immerse the terminals for about 5 minutes in the still lukewarm vinegar, all the corrosion will fizz away and then you can restore the shine of the terminals with either just alcohol or a little brasso wadding but only if the corrosion has eaten entirely through the coating on the terminals to reveal the copper core. Obviously you'll want to clean any remaining vinegar off and dry it all but alcohol will help you again with that. This same method is really useful at cleaning corrosion out of switches too.

    Cool video. I personally never liked the translucent models but still great to see people taking the time to repair instead of replacing

    That battery leakage is nasty. I got a Gameboy Color here where the battery acid has actually eaten away parts of the mainboard, instead of Nintendo only the letters "Nint" are left. It went up to the pin strip connector (there is still some residue left I can't get out). Basically a huge chunk of the mainboard is gone, only the copper core is left. The GBC only turns on whenever it feels like it, and even if it does, you can't move left, because that button doesn't work anymore. The screen is still good, the speaker works, the case is in relatively good condition (clear purple one), so it's good for spare parts.

      Or you could use some wire and fix it

    For those switch repairs get yourself a spray can of Deoxit. The stuff is an amazing contact cleaner. May save you some desolder-ing in the future!

      atariforever2002 Or 70% vinegar. It does the trick.

    GameBoy's are super cheap and super easy to fix, great system to start on.
    believe it or not, i got my first one for just 1€ :D
    good job, but i'd rather use Vinegar to clean the battery terminals, just scrub it for a while and it will remove 90% of the corrosion and acid residue, even in tight places.

    I found it way easier to pry stuff like laptops with a plastic card. Though it has to be one that is cast plastic and not composite film-cardboard-film kind of card. Because that film will peal off from mechanical impact and friction.

    Good job! You can btw get the battery terminals out by bending a metal tab from inside the chassis, this way you can properly get rid of the battery leakage from both the chassis and the terminals. You'll want to do this because the corrosion is "alive" and still attacking the metal, so get rid of it as much as you can.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 років тому

      Thanks. I was going to resort to boiling it off as well, figuring the corrosion (likely battery leakage) had stuck the terminal on to the plastic.

    Hi Retro repairs I was wondering if it is possible to fix my on/off switch because i cant turn on my on/off switch to make the gameboy color turn on instead i have to put the AA batteries in, and it will power on. This method of turning on the GBC is getting repetitive it does not even matter if the on/off switch is turned on or not, if I put the batteries in it will automatically turn on. This is because while changing my GBC housing, the thing needed to opperate the on/off switch just plopped right out the system and since i was changing the housing on the housing on the rug, I could not find it. So do you have any suggestions on how to replace my on/off switch for my gbc?

    Use baking powder and water to neutralize and remove the battery acid.

    Use household ammonia (a base) to counteract the battery acid. Then rinse with alcohol.

      I use a 60/40 solder with a rosin flux core. Don't recall off hand what brand solder I have right now, I got it at a local electronics parts and vacuum store.

    Yeah on the power switch shoot rubbing alcohol in the switch and then let it dry because if you break the switch portion you will have to buy a new motherboard

    Would any sandpaper work like sandpaper for wood

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 років тому +2

      No, that's much too coarse, you'll damage the contacts. I use sandpaper as a last resort, and automotive sandpaper used to sand down imperfections in paint. Usually 2500 grit.

    Interesting, but this would be at least 10x better with improved camera work (or just proper focus and exposure). Not being able to even see what you are working on is pretty dull.
