  • In this video, I show you how to revive a Sega Dreamcast with dead controller ports. It's a simple fix requiring only a 1/4w 10ohm resistor and basic soldering skill.

    When you put the top part of the case on, always put it on with the LID OPEN, then close the lid once you have it attached. If you put it on with the lid closed it crushes the switch at a weird angle, potentially damaging it. This is probably what was causing your problem when you put the top part back on the first time.

    Thank You. I just bought one from an estate sale for $5.00 because she said it didn't work. I know there had to be a cheap fix. I tore it apart and tested that resistor and it is dead. Thanks again.

    The Dreamcast clock battery is an ML2430-VS1, which is a rechargeable lithium battery. They're about $4-5 bucks and not hard to find at all. It'll last about 5 years before needing to be replaced. You can also mod in your own terminal and insert any kind of rechargeable battery that you desire, but it probably won't save you any time or money, really.

    I've learned a great deal about batteries. To test if that battery is any good, just set your multimeter to DC V (voltage; for my meter, I have to set mine to DC 20V) and touch either lead to one side and the other (negative results tell you the leads are backward but don't matter). The closer the Voltage is to 0, the less time you have on that battery until it's dead. I believe those coin batteries should be about 1.5V when fully charged.

      Andrew Fillhart correct. This battery flickered between 0 and 1v, but I didn't show it in the video. It's dead, but I don't have a replacement on the special mount the DC uses. Maybe I'll order a few and make a video on how to swap them

    Clean the Laser with alcohol and then tweak the potentiometer on the the GD- Rom Laser clockwise (while the laser is upside down) i done this yesterday on a non working dreamcast and now it is working fine.

  • @dallase1
    @dallase1 4 роки тому

    I've been plugging and unplugging my controllers for 21 years and the ports still work just fine.
    Ebay has a Dreamcast Controller port kit that has a reset-able fuse, resister (the tan one), Capacitor, battery holder that supports a removable battery and a ML2032 battery for 11 bucks (8.99 plus 2 shipping).
    My battery has lasted 21 years and still holds a charge as long as I power on my Dreamcast every 1 or 2 weeks and leave it on for a few hours, minor inconvenience compared to buying expensive rechargeable button cell battery and a battery holder that allows you to replace the battery without having to de soldering it.
    The best battery mod is the one that disables the charging circuit and allows the use of a standard CR2032 battery like the Saturn uses.

    The issue with the original game disc is not coming from your disc, it is a common problem the Dreamcast gets sometimes. There are tutorials on UA-cam how to fix it, but it involves taking the entire system apart and some more soldering. :-]

      so true, I went through several before finding yours. just got a Dreamcast on Ebay for $20.00 because of this problem and I knew it had to be a fix out there. jeepnII something clearly caused the component to fail, twisting it removes the protection and could cause further problems if something else were to happen to it

    I have a Dreamcast and while the controller ports do work (I've only tested port A so far), when I tug on the controller (by accident) it disconnects then reconnects, despite still being connected. This causes the game to pause against my will. Port A does look a bit dirty. My guesses are that either:
    - the resistor in my ports is starting to fail
    - port A just needs a clean
    - there's something wrong with my controller
    Anyone else experiencing this?

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  7 років тому

      adultmoshifan87 I've never experienced that, but I would think
      A. Controller cable isn't connected well to the plug
      B. Controller port is dirty
      C. Bad solder joint where the port connects to the board.
      Do you have another Controller to test it with?

    Great video, I just received a Dreamcast from a seller on eBay and the unit has the same issue. I will be ordering a few of the 1/4 w 10-ohm resistors and giving this repair a go! I have found that some people say that the 10-ohm resistor is a bad way to repair the console. Instead, individuals say that 0.5 amp pico fuse or a resettable fuse is a better option. Which do you suggest? How long will the resistor modification work for? Would this work for the repair? www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/576-0251.500MXL Thanks! Keep the content coming!

    • @RetroRepairs

      You may have difficulty finding that fusible resistor, but that is what was originally used. That concern does have merit, as removing the fuse potentially removes protection against whatever caused it to fail in the first place
