  • In this video I take a look at the Atomic Purple Game Boy Color I got recently. The power switch was flaky, and once on, there was no sound. Headphones don't give out sound either, so I try and find out what's wrong. Unfortunately, I am not able to resolve the sound issues yet.

    I know this is late, but I had this same sound issue, and I solved it by following the suggestions of the other commenters!
    I desoldered the volume control switch. It's two via solder points behind the switch, and 5 regular ones to the left of the switch.
    I dripped some rubbing alcohol into the switch itself and rotated it a bunch
    I took a q tip with rubbing alcohol and an exacto knife and GENTLY cleaned some corrosion off the top solder points ON the volume control knob
    I cleaned up the old solder, and soldered the knob back in place
    and like magic, the sound came back!

    Hey, I know this video is nearly two years old, did you ever come up with a solution to the audio issue? I don't own a GBC, but I do enjoy seeing your accomplishments, very educational!

    check resistance on the volume control itself.

    I really like your channel man, I think you're going to wind up becoming a big channel, so keep up the good work. I'm also big into fixing hardware. I'm currently building a portable ps3. I like especially like the video where you use resistor legs to make solder bridges instead of mod wire. You earned a subscriber (And notification reminder) today brother.

    Try scrubbing the volume wheel with a toothbrush and some alcohol, maybe it's that connection that does not let sound go through the rest of the board.

    Could just be a bad volume control pot as others have said. Measure resistance from the wiper to ground and that should tell you if it's defective.

    I'm no expert at this kind of stuff, but I've had luck tracing audio signal at different points in a circuit before I start replacing parts. just put a game that has looping music on and you should get a voltage reading? Great channel, I subbed and enjoyed a few videos already. thanks!

    I recently heavily modded a Game Boy Color and removed the audio jack, I then ran a jumper wire from hole 2 to hole 3 in its place. That might fix your sound and bypass the audio jack.

      @NerdGamming103 That likely wouldn't make much difference seeing as he didn't even get sound from the headphone jack that is on the board its self, meaning the problem is probably somewhere els(my best guess would be the volume control)

    The wires could be in the wrong position. Try both speakers with both wire orientations.

    • @brayatan1990
      @brayatan1990 6 років тому +5

      The speaker (at least on this case) don't have polarity, so it doesn't matter on wich orientation you connect it.

    • @Harmonic14
      @Harmonic14 6 років тому

      Doesn't matter - pretty much all sound signals received by a speaker are AC signals.

    Though I doubt it is a capacitor problem, next time try to check capacitance of the SMD caps when you pull them off the board. You may not even need to bother swapping them out

      RetroRepairs damn you were at that cold ass game? I’ll never ever forget that one. The real dagger was the game in 98 for me. I kicked my tv into the wall and broke the Sheetrock. Btw ever ran into a wii that just keeps ejecting discs as soon as you put them in? I’m about to open one up and troubleshoot one that’s doing it. If so what was wrong with it?

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 років тому

      AJ Green yeah, 98, 09, 15... Lots of testing my patience.
      As for the wii, I've never opened one, but I wonder if maybe there's something jammed in the slot? Do all discs eject? Or just wii games

    I recently got a used original Xbox and the disc drive does'int read the discs. If I need to replace the laser assembly can I just buy a laser assembly thats the same or at least simaler to the former assembly and have it work?

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 років тому

      Yes, although taking a quick peek on eBay, replacement laser assemblies are around $10-15, while the whole replacement drive is around $20-25

    • @teh_supar_hackr
      @teh_supar_hackr 6 років тому

I noticed on some of the contacts(for the A and B button and directional pad) there is a semi-dark/brownish stain(corrosion?), what can I do about this? Isopropyl alchohol did not even scratch this dark stain.. Is the sandpaper in the video the solution? Thank you for all the help RetroRepairs !

    You should take a look to this document (the schematic specifically) and test the sound lines on each stage to look where's the problem: bit.ly/2Ben0pY It's pretty easy to understand, and you can use the test points at the front of the console to check each part easier.

    Hi! I really freaking love your videos, they are very interesting, I especially like those when you have to open up these consoles and do some solder work.
    But I have some suggestion on how to make your videos even more cooler:
    1) Please make a Patreon page! I would love to throw some buck to support you and see your cool vids come out more often!
    2) Can you try not to show your feet on camera? Especially when it's not quite clean white socks. It really is not pleasant to look at.
    3) If it's possible, try to keep camera on tripod as much as possible, watching your struggle to do something with one hand is not really cool.
    4) When your channel will start earn more money in the future, try to invest in some good lightning. The yellowish uneven light like in this video is not really like to look at.
    5) This may sound like a weird suggestion, but is it maybe possible to replace this plaid thing like you use in your videos a lot, like in this one? Idk why but for me personally it looks very ugly. I would personally use some single colored surface of grey color with smooth texture that fits in the whole frame.
    I know it's a lot to ask from such a small channel but this is not hate and I really love what you are doing and I would really be glad to see your videos improve :D

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 років тому

      Hey, thanks for the feedback. I've got a paypal link in the descriptions of my videos if anyone wanted to donate. I don't like to push it and sound like I'm asking people for money, but anytime someone wants to help out and help me fund another ebay buy, I'm more than happy to take it and say thanks!.
      The plaid thing is just a small towel. I use them so the surface isn't hard. The point is so that if I drop screws, they don't bounce off a hard table and get lost. However, I'm sure I could find something better to look at.
      I'm in the process of doing some renos in my basement. When done, I'm hoping to use a spare bedroom as my workshop for this, in which case I can really set up some better lighting and a more permanent mount for the camera.
      Again, thanks for the feedback, and appreciate you watching!

    • @tannisroot
      @tannisroot 6 років тому

      It's no shame to ask to sponsor come quality content! You should really consider Patreon platform though, not only it's much more user friendly and easy to deal with compared to Paypal which can be pain in the ass, especially for people from other countries, it's also possible for supporter to setup monthly payments to you just to support you or in return for some exclusive stuff like behind the scenes updates or just plain releasing the video a bit early for supporters. Even big channels do it since ad revenue from UA-cam is at all time low.
      Also, I think there are there are magnetic mats being sold for exactly kind of work you do, I see those in iFixit videos sometimes, you should look them up.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 років тому +1

      I'll check it out, thanks. The channel is definitely starting to pick up steam in the last month or so, even though I haven't been updating with new movies much lately, the views are increasing exponentially. +320 subs in 3 days somehow. You're right, the youtube revenue isn't much, but every couple months I can get enough from it to make a couple purchases for more content. Thanks again for the comments.

    There's rubber mesh that chef's use to keep their cutting board from slipping from under them. I see the gameboy kept sliding around making soldering more risky. Here's a link to some of the mesh, there's also probably more cheep than this www.webstaurantstore.com/3-premium-black-mesh-cutting-board-mat-bar-mat-shelf-liner/208110.html . I use this sometimes when I'm doing work on some devices, it's very helpful.
