Fixing eBay Junk - 2 Game Boy Color - Part 2 No Power or Sound

- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- In this video I take a look at the Atomic Purple Game Boy Color I got recently. The power switch was flaky, and once on, there was no sound. Headphones don't give out sound either, so I try and find out what's wrong. Unfortunately, I am not able to resolve the sound issues yet.

Thanks for watching
I know this is late, but I had this same sound issue, and I solved it by following the suggestions of the other commenters!
I desoldered the volume control switch. It's two via solder points behind the switch, and 5 regular ones to the left of the switch.
I dripped some rubbing alcohol into the switch itself and rotated it a bunch
I took a q tip with rubbing alcohol and an exacto knife and GENTLY cleaned some corrosion off the top solder points ON the volume control knob
I cleaned up the old solder, and soldered the knob back in place
and like magic, the sound came back!
Well, there ya go. Nice
Hey, I know this video is nearly two years old, did you ever come up with a solution to the audio issue? I don't own a GBC, but I do enjoy seeing your accomplishments, very educational!
check resistance on the volume control itself.
I really like your channel man, I think you're going to wind up becoming a big channel, so keep up the good work. I'm also big into fixing hardware. I'm currently building a portable ps3. I like especially like the video where you use resistor legs to make solder bridges instead of mod wire. You earned a subscriber (And notification reminder) today brother.
Although you didn't fix the volume, the levels of trouble shooting I feel were realistic! For some odd reason I just want to give you a hug.haha Thanks again!
Try scrubbing the volume wheel with a toothbrush and some alcohol, maybe it's that connection that does not let sound go through the rest of the board.
Pro tip. Get a silicone mat so that you don’t have stuff slide.
how about the volume wheel?
first place i would have looked
Could just be a bad volume control pot as others have said. Measure resistance from the wiper to ground and that should tell you if it's defective.
that q-tip look like its the only one you use
What about the volume knob?
You made me feel way better about not having steady hands
I'm no expert at this kind of stuff, but I've had luck tracing audio signal at different points in a circuit before I start replacing parts. just put a game that has looping music on and you should get a voltage reading? Great channel, I subbed and enjoyed a few videos already. thanks!
I recently heavily modded a Game Boy Color and removed the audio jack, I then ran a jumper wire from hole 2 to hole 3 in its place. That might fix your sound and bypass the audio jack.
Was there an update on this?
Why not replace the wires that connect the speaker to the board
I was thinking that as well
@NerdGamming103 That likely wouldn't make much difference seeing as he didn't even get sound from the headphone jack that is on the board its self, meaning the problem is probably somewhere els(my best guess would be the volume control)
Please do a part three if you found a solution to the sound problem. Great repairs.
The wires could be in the wrong position. Try both speakers with both wire orientations.
The speaker (at least on this case) don't have polarity, so it doesn't matter on wich orientation you connect it.
Doesn't matter - pretty much all sound signals received by a speaker are AC signals.
Adam what's up man I just got into your UA-cam channel today and it is awesome I have always wanted to repair consoles do you ever resell them as you repair them?and one of the comments is right you accidentally put the old speaker back on at the end of the video that might of been what happened lol but I love your videos man keep doing it
upload more your videos are spreading :)
antony redfern I've got quite a few packages awaiting pickup, so hopefully in a week of so I can make another mail day video.
I have the exact same problem. Same colour and make to that one and it's got a dodgy power switch and no sound. I actually found this video while looking for how to fix it
Though I doubt it is a capacitor problem, next time try to check capacitance of the SMD caps when you pull them off the board. You may not even need to bother swapping them out
theres is a purple square on the back of the case, what is that? does it comes with the original?
I'd check that capacitor that you had the most trouble with. You may have damaged it while bending it into position.
Dude I just had to come bye and give a SKOL!!! Diggs is the man!!
SKOL! One hell of an ending. A little closer than I'd prefer, but glad to be on the winning side of one of those for once.
RetroRepairs paybacks for 09. Karma can be a real bitch! I actually shedded some tears. I’ve been through so much heart break with this team. Felt so good to finally be on the other side. But anyway I love your videos!
AJ Green I know what you mean. I went to the playoff game vs.Seattle a couple years ago. That sucked.
RetroRepairs damn you were at that cold ass game? I’ll never ever forget that one. The real dagger was the game in 98 for me. I kicked my tv into the wall and broke the Sheetrock. Btw ever ran into a wii that just keeps ejecting discs as soon as you put them in? I’m about to open one up and troubleshoot one that’s doing it. If so what was wrong with it?
AJ Green yeah, 98, 09, 15... Lots of testing my patience.
As for the wii, I've never opened one, but I wonder if maybe there's something jammed in the slot? Do all discs eject? Or just wii games
I recently got a used original Xbox and the disc drive does'int read the discs. If I need to replace the laser assembly can I just buy a laser assembly thats the same or at least simaler to the former assembly and have it work?
Yes, although taking a quick peek on eBay, replacement laser assemblies are around $10-15, while the whole replacement drive is around $20-25
so if I want to save around 5-10 dollars I get the laser assemblies?
It looks like it, yeah. Check it out for yourself with shipping to your area. The laser assembly will be cheapest, but you have to take apart the drive to replace it
try to replace the volume wheel entirely sometimes the contacts inside the wheel corrode and you lose your audio all together
Nice video, I don't like your trial and error method though. Why not measure the resistance of the speaker itself, instead of ordering a new part...
Note to self: check physical size when buying capacitors
I've the same problem with mi gbc and see all the video. You give an idea with the capacitors! I'll try it. Thanks
I want to clean my gameboy color to clean out some sticky buttons and just do a clean. Is it safe to rub down the board with a Q tip and some isopryl alcohol? Thank you
丸チェロ yes, that is safe to use, just make sure it's 70% or higher, 99% is best
Thank you! I opened up the GBC and cleaned up the buttons. Got my start button working and everything! I noticed on some of the contacts(for the A and B button and directional pad) there is a semi-dark/brownish stain(corrosion?), what can I do about this? Isopropyl alchohol did not even scratch this dark stain.. Is the sandpaper in the video the solution? Thank you for all the help RetroRepairs !
丸チェロ try pencil eraser on it, then clean up after with the alcohol
Yes it works on gameboy pocket too i cleaned my GBP because it was in storage for 7 years
You should take a look to this document (the schematic specifically) and test the sound lines on each stage to look where's the problem: bit.ly/2Ben0pY It's pretty easy to understand, and you can use the test points at the front of the console to check each part easier.
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out
You've almost hit 3K
Should come up with a more methodical approach of troubleshooting. Just randomly replacing components isn't a very efficient means of fixing an issue.
I need to repair a gameboy color too, it fell and it wont turn on :(
Wheres part 3
Is it weird that im drinking some peppermint schnapps wil watching this
Not even a little bit
I'm eating salted nuts while watching this
Nah
I mean waffles
Did you switch back to the old speaker?
Try contact cleaner on the volume control
Hello I bought a gameboy color and change the 3 capacitors at the time of turning it on the screen looks very opaque and when you enter the game you do not see much someone knows what can be?
Does it have a light on it (if yes it has a moded screen and the mod needs to be removed)
the old original Nintendo entertainment system old original Nintendo game boy and super Nintendo entertainment systems are my 3 favorite consoles
Retro repairs my boy
aa computers and technology
Found at his grandparents house 2
Genesis consoles and he wants to restore them but I think he needs some help
Hi! I really freaking love your videos, they are very interesting, I especially like those when you have to open up these consoles and do some solder work.
But I have some suggestion on how to make your videos even more cooler:
1) Please make a Patreon page! I would love to throw some buck to support you and see your cool vids come out more often!
2) Can you try not to show your feet on camera? Especially when it's not quite clean white socks. It really is not pleasant to look at.
3) If it's possible, try to keep camera on tripod as much as possible, watching your struggle to do something with one hand is not really cool.
4) When your channel will start earn more money in the future, try to invest in some good lightning. The yellowish uneven light like in this video is not really like to look at.
5) This may sound like a weird suggestion, but is it maybe possible to replace this plaid thing like you use in your videos a lot, like in this one? Idk why but for me personally it looks very ugly. I would personally use some single colored surface of grey color with smooth texture that fits in the whole frame.
I know it's a lot to ask from such a small channel but this is not hate and I really love what you are doing and I would really be glad to see your videos improve :D
Hey, thanks for the feedback. I've got a paypal link in the descriptions of my videos if anyone wanted to donate. I don't like to push it and sound like I'm asking people for money, but anytime someone wants to help out and help me fund another ebay buy, I'm more than happy to take it and say thanks!.
The plaid thing is just a small towel. I use them so the surface isn't hard. The point is so that if I drop screws, they don't bounce off a hard table and get lost. However, I'm sure I could find something better to look at.
I'm in the process of doing some renos in my basement. When done, I'm hoping to use a spare bedroom as my workshop for this, in which case I can really set up some better lighting and a more permanent mount for the camera.
Again, thanks for the feedback, and appreciate you watching!
It's no shame to ask to sponsor come quality content! You should really consider Patreon platform though, not only it's much more user friendly and easy to deal with compared to Paypal which can be pain in the ass, especially for people from other countries, it's also possible for supporter to setup monthly payments to you just to support you or in return for some exclusive stuff like behind the scenes updates or just plain releasing the video a bit early for supporters. Even big channels do it since ad revenue from UA-cam is at all time low.
Also, I think there are there are magnetic mats being sold for exactly kind of work you do, I see those in iFixit videos sometimes, you should look them up.
I'll check it out, thanks. The channel is definitely starting to pick up steam in the last month or so, even though I haven't been updating with new movies much lately, the views are increasing exponentially. +320 subs in 3 days somehow. You're right, the youtube revenue isn't much, but every couple months I can get enough from it to make a couple purchases for more content. Thanks again for the comments.
RetroRepairs do it bro, add a patron link. and buy some light. I personally would pay if you keep on posting videos about game boy and Nintendo old stuff ;)
Revisit?
The volume control dude.....
Nice video
How do you know it has no sound if it has no power?
It was rather easy. Once I got it turned on, I found that I couldn't hear anything
Love ur vidz
nice channel! +1sub ;) hope u upload more videos soon :)
Cool video🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Can I send you my 2DS that's not working?
I already tried it myself but failed.
I can give you more detail if you're interested
Domi Senpai what's wrong with it? I've only tinkered with a couple 2ds, not as much on the board that's easily repairable however
I do repairs on 3DS and 2DS but I believe we are in opposite sides of the world haha
come back to uuuuus :(
Matthew :O I've got some interesting stuff in the mail that I've gotta drive and pick up on Monday. Stay tuned
Hey I know this is an old video but after doing some searching I found a guy who had a similar problem did everything you did and he found out that the connection in the headphone jack was a little corroded and bent so it wasn’t making contact. This might help:
www.dbwbp.com/index.php/16-repair/14-gameboy-dmg-001-no-sound-repair
Thanks for sharing, I'll check that out. I dont think i ever revisited this gameboy
I've seen this before. threw mine away.
We should be able to add thumbs down to every mistake you make. Check the volume nob!
please learn electronic basics, then buy multimeter, then learn to use it, then repair shit for a few years and then continue posting tutorial videos.
Milan Lončar
He has a multimeter (you can see him using it in his videos on repairing the NES toploader). He knows how to use it. Please learn not to jump to conclusions about the equipment someone owns, or how much they know about electronics, before you say something that makes you look stupid.
ok, i will, thanks.
SpearM75503 clearly he didn't watch the video...
There's rubber mesh that chef's use to keep their cutting board from slipping from under them. I see the gameboy kept sliding around making soldering more risky. Here's a link to some of the mesh, there's also probably more cheep than this www.webstaurantstore.com/3-premium-black-mesh-cutting-board-mat-bar-mat-shelf-liner/208110.html . I use this sometimes when I'm doing work on some devices, it's very helpful.
