High-Speed Railway (HSR) Construction by Country (1965-2019)

  • High-speed rail (HSR) is a type of rail transport that runs significantly faster than traditional rail traffic, using an integrated system of specialized rolling stock and dedicated tracks. While there is no single standard that applies worldwide, new lines in excess of 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph) and existing lines in excess of 200 kilometres per hour (120 mph) are widely considered to be high-speed. The first high-speed rail system, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, began operations in Japan in 1964 and was widely known as the bullet train. High-speed trains mostly operate on standard gauge tracks of continuously welded rail on grade-separated right-of-way that incorporates a large turning radius in its design, however certain regions with wider legacy railways, such as Russia have sought to develop a high speed railway network in broad gauge.

It's hard to imagine not to travel by HSR in china. I was born in 80s, when everything was inconvenient. But given the lifestyle we have now, i almost forgot how difficult everything was back then. China made the nightmare of proverty disappear so fast that people born after 2000s often laugh at me coz my childhood story sounds a dark fairytale to them.

Even though there is some democratic issues, it's becaming better and better.poverty rate is decreased from 27% to 6.7%.and the economy also attained 5th position within 5 years. And infrastructure is improving. both India and China should be proud of each other for being gigantic neighbors. But this border issues just made india and china bussiness partners. The real significance of high-speed rail to China is to promote the economic growth of all parts of China. In all cities and towns through which high-speed rail passes, their economy has grown rapidly in almost a few years; it has realized urban interconnection in China and accelerated people’s lives rhythm.
For example, a multi-billion-dollar high-speed rail line will generate economic benefits several times the original investment in cities and towns along the line within five years. This is why China has accelerated the construction of high-speed rail.

I think Spain has done well. But having said that, I think it is misleading to compare large scale constructions the way you mentioned.
I've been watching China closely for more than 20 years. If you've been observing China for a long time, you will know that the way China builds things is indescribable to the average Westerner. They build things like there is no tomorrow, and in unbelievable speed.
If China was the size of Spain, I think the entire country would be completely covered with bullet trains (even to small villages), and world-class airports in every city. And every second building in the country would be a skyscraper.
Just give you an example. Many years ago, some developer built an entire apartment village complex. A very luxurious upscale modern large complex with probably around 20 or so high rise luxury buildings of more than 30 or 40 floors each, and with hundreds of luxury apartment units each. The government said the buildings were not built to the correct city regulations.
Guess what happened next. They simply bombed the ENTIRE huge luxury high-rise village complex! Flatten the entire place with no hesitation. I don't know what happened next. I think they probably simply rebuild. They clearly have a different mentality about construction to us.
If China was the physical size of Spain, China would look like nothing on earth today.
Just have a look at this video. Most of these cities look nothing like these a mere 25 or 30 years ago :
