I was so surprised at how modern Dracula felt when I read it! One of my favourite classics!

Great video! My favorite spooky novels are from the first part of the 20th Century. The Uninvited by Irish author Dorothy Macardle features a classic haunted house with a complex mystery. Set on the seaside in Cornwall and I believe written in the late 1930s (but published in 1942) it is now an unintentional time capsule of the unsettled period between the wars. Wonderful writing with authentic period slang and characters who still crackle with life. The Red Lamp by Mary Roberts Rinehart, who was known as the American Agatha Christie. Published in 1925 this again features fabulous writing with a backdrop of the unsettled period following the horrors of the First World War. It is set on a country estate, and while it is primarily a murder mystery, a supernatural atmosphere of psychic research and seances pervades the entire novel. I’ve read this story was inspired by actual uncanny events the author had experienced staying in a country house in the 1920s…

Loving your list. I have wuthering heights on my tbr for winter
And just picked up a compilation of edgar allan poe, looking forward to reading that oct 31st. I also downloaded vera a while back thank you for reminding me i had it sounds gothic and spooky. I also want to read the bloody chamber at somepoint it sounds fun and been on my list for a while as is dracula ( have put that one off as it scares me a little lol)
The women in white is also on my shelves that i forgot about. Too many goodies to choose from. Oh what to pick for my spooky classic. I read dorian grey and dr jekyll last year, frankenstein the year before and lady audley the one before that and loved all 4. Rebecca is my reread this winter season as i want to annotate the themes within.
Love how you speak with such passion about classics it always motivates me to pick something up X

    Great video 👏
I've read a few and my favourite was The Bloody Chamber. One of the short stories, The Company of Wolves, was made into a film in the mid 80s. I just love the film; the scenery and atmosphere are perfect.
Right now I'm a quarter of the way through Dracula, I find it quite easy to read and the descriptions and atmosphere are excellent.
    Happy Halloween 🎃

Amazing list! I would absolutely add The haunting of Hill house and The Wind in the Willows as more or a modern classic.

I love Carmilla too. Didn’t like The Woman in White. Lady Audley’s Secret and Vera sound right up my alley and I’m hoping to read The Bloody Chamber soon! Great recommendations!

They are really good! I re-read "Lady Audley's Secret" this year just because it is such a fun book. The "secret" isn't really a secret ... it's obvious, but that in no way detracts from the enjoyability of the story.

Thanks Lucy: mostly familiar ground here. Being more a creature of the 18th century than the 19th I'm going to put a word in for Walpole's The Castle of Otranto (it's hilariously bad), and Matthew Lewis' The Monk. If memory serves Jane Austen owned a copy of the latter, which is pretty scandalous stuff by the standards of any times, let alone the 1790s. Incidentally, my favourite Poe tale is Silence - only a couple of pages long.

I was tempted to add The Castle of Otranto but I wasn't sure the hilariously bad vibes would convince anyone. I couldn't bring myself to do it!! I've got my work cut out for me to find some new, exciting and unexpected titles for next year!

@GenWivern2 I'd like to give The Mysteries of Udolpho a go but I find it daunting! I'm still building up the courage!

@@lucythereader I read and thoroughly enjoyed Udolpho a few winters ago - lots of Sensibility to wade through, though. The Italian might be a good alternative way into Mrs Radcliffe because all the same ingredients are there, but it's much shorter and the pace is comparatively brisk.

❤ Thank you so much for these wonderful classic recommandations, Lucy, - some of them I‘ve read and loved and the others sound so good!! And I love your way to present them by revealing their links to feminism and today’s world. This should be obvious - but you could read the books , enjoy them and never find those clues, as well. 🤗 💕

Lady Audley is soooo good. Helps to create detective fiction too. I've decided to read a novel I've never read before. The Beetle by Richard Marsh. I've heard some interesting things about it. Out sold Dracula in 1897 apparently. Have you read it?

    • @GenWivern2
      @GenWivern2 2 дні тому +3

Yes, The Beetle is well worth reading in my opinion; Graham Greene was a vocal admirer which probably saved it from obscurity.

Thanks for mentioning "The Beetle." I've never heard of it, or Richard Marsh, but want to check it out. Oh why can't October last longer? We need more time to read all of these wonderful stories. 👻🎃 🧛
