- The third DLC pack of Motion Twin and Evil Empire's Dead Cells is finally out, and in addition to answering some of the questions that we've had floating around in our heads, it caps off a story that the developers have been building for years! Let's go through the new information, as well as the old, and compile it all together so we can see the story told in the DLC in its entirety!

There are multiple things around the Queen and her bodyguards that are interesting :
While you face 3 bodyguard, their room have 4 beds and 4 sets of weapons, with 3 of them, those used by the Servants, missing.
The remaining weapons in said room are a longsword and a shortsword. There's another boss that use this kind of weapons and that's the Time Keeper. Not only that, but the Time Keeper is a woman wearing a mask, like all the Servants. If we consider that the Time Keeper is the fourth Servant, her fighting style complements team : Calliope uses strength, Kleio uses agility, Euterpe uses ranged attacks and the Time Keeper uses time magic. Not only that, but each Servant fighting style is reminiscent of the Time Keeper's fighting style : she uses agile dashes like Kleio, use ranged shurikens attacks like Euterpe and uses a chain like Calliope.
If we explore further the idea that the Time Keeper is the fourth Servant, my guess is that her name is Melpomene.
The reasoning behind this comes from the other Servants name, Calliope, Kleio and Euterpe are the name of three Muses from Greek mythology, each having a different domain : Calliope is the Muse of Epic Poetry, Kleio (Clio) is the Muse History and Euterpe is the Muse of Music. While there are more than 4 Muses, Melpomene is the Muse of Tragedy and the only one with weapons as emblems (sword and club). Not only that, but the fact that the Time Keeper left the Servants to try and solve the problem of the Malaise with her time powers, only to fail, is quite tragic.
Now, why she would have left the Servants seems obvious : with her time powers, she was one of the few able to do something. But messing with Time is a full time job, with a dedicated workplace (the Clock Tower), thus, she cannot protect the Queen anymore.
And last, but not least, the Queen and the Time Keeper have things in common : glowing blades and the ability to create rifts in time and space.
I don't think that the "dimensional cut" ability of the Queen is her own, but comes from her sword, as the Beheaded can use the same power if wielding the weapon. It is possible that the ability comes from the Time Keeper, who gave the sword to her Queen as a parting gift.

Not only that, but there is an outfit called the "King's Servant Outfit", with the description "Was there a fourth Servant?" If we take the idea of the king's vassals being appointed to help stop the Malaise from the original Dead Cells lore video and run with it, its possible the Time Keeper was the King's Servant, who he tasked with using her magic to find a way to stop the Malaise.

Ik i am late but you might be right since in a lore room where we see 2 paintings of the king and queen.we see 4 flowers by the queens side probably reffering to the queen and her 3 protectors
And in the king painting we see another flower reffering to the 4th protector who now works for the king and that being time keeper

Honestly, I like the character of the Headless Homunculus/King like he was brutal and cruel and he died for it but after reviving he just said fvck it let's move on and just went on with his life

It's possible that the queen could still be alive since she's the "perfect" humunculus and unlike our main character her body would probably be still intact and since humunculus can't die as well she could be seen in the next dlc
Could be! The explosion that would have consumed her body is pretty similar to the one that happened when the Beheaded first destroyed his body, and he lived through that! Makes sense that the Queen could survive this, so we could see her in the future!

@@burst1323 That’s a very good question. We don’t know for 100% certainty, but since we know what happens when the King dies, and the fact that when he comes back to the Lighthouse, she says, “You again,” I think it’s safe to assume she can take over a new body just like he can. However, why that body always has the appearance of her old one is unknown as well. Maybe she’s got some magic to make the body like her old one!
@@SquatchGamingChannel to me the apostates (if i remember their names correctly)are not really the type of people to be into magic-y stuff too much. so maybe they made extra bodies in case of the original one dying as a backup. maybe something like a doll or just a copy of the queen's body?

Interesting things i noticed.
- the giant snake in the training room killed by who?
It also looks like the snakes in the fractured shrine so is there a giant snake nest in the sky?
- where did the giant come from? The caverns? Then are there more giants?
- how come the giant cant die he doesnt seem malaise infected
- the creature locked up in the sewers? Why in the sewers the only thing locked there was conjuctivius
- what is conjuctivius
- who is the person on the other side of the door we meet
- are the shopkeepers the same person or different people of the same race
- since we have the same blacksmith we can assume the shopkeepers and goblin people are the same so are they mutated people orrrr?
- even though hes a joke why is the taylor the only normal human?
- we see demons and Supernatural esque enemies in the game (the book mages i forgot their names) we know there was a cult and some weapons are also magical like the magic missles so what part does the Supernatural play
- the slumbering sanctuary?
- the time keepers time powers, the queens reality powers?
- since the queens blade is unlockable and the unlocked version has the same power as the original then who made this reality cutting bladeless sword? Is it the blacksmith? If yes then how does he know reality cutting metal work and why does only the queen have it surely the king would have wanted one or atleast the hand of the king.
- who killed the trainer woman at the beginning?
- are the warrior women a race? If yes then where did they live and where did they go
- the dark stalker? From the name they seem like assassins of sorts before the malaise so who did they work for because theres no record of them in the lore anywhere
- the beetle woman in the catacombs place? What happened there how did that happen why is she a beetle woman?
- the stem cells and blue cells what the heck happened where did they come from?
- why does the island shift?
- werent they other villages asides from the stilt village and the morass?
- the runes is it just a game design feature or do they actually have a lore purpose
- the king had to have had a personal weapon of sorts, where is it?
- etc cause this is a damn long list already

@@revanf3719 I think that's just them shrinking him down to be a player, the king was bigger before the beheaded retook his body
The Giant is literally undead. He was killed by the King via a spear to the chest, and dumped in the prisoner's quarters. Upon acquiring the first boss cell, his skeleton is reanimated, and he sinks and goes in to deepest part of the Caverns to turn it into his lair.
Maybe the yellow sap in the sewers is directly related to staphy in some way. It reminds me of world of warcraft where a very similar Eldritch God bleeds metal with strange properties.
Is the Sap Staphy's blood, and that is what causes the Malaise? When we collect boss cells they are specially called "stem cells" which are commonly associated with babies and fetuses, maybe these are stem cells of a baby staphy, not yet fully grown to their full power. These cells are a part of Staphy in some way and that is what gives them their magical powers.
Just a theory, but it's funny that Dead Cells gave me an H.P. Lovecraft from the start. The fishing village turned into monsters, a cult worshiping a strange God. It's all just WAY too convenient to not be related.
- we don't know. may be related to fractured shrines though. likely the shrines were build by the pagan cult or there when they arrived on the island
- uncertain. it's possible he's an oddity (being human-like in appearance) and the result of some mutation or experiment
- he may not be dead at all. in paintings in the castle he's still depicted as a skeleton. it's beyond me why the king tried to kill him with a spear to the chest but he's an idiot sometimes so who knows
- it's just conjunctivius, but the king was suspicious that the sewers were the cause of the malaise (ultimately being contaminated by the sap in the sanctuary, that's plausible), so he locked it away
- a mutated...sewer creature. what she was originally is unclear, but the malaise caused her to become extremely large etc. by infecting her before she hatched
- ??
- different people. they're all Guillians (actual name of the race)
- the Guillians seem to be uninfected. perhaps they're immune to the malaise, as we never see any infected Guillians (the agitated pickpockets in the bank are just evil)
- the king, the servants, and the tutorial knight are all normal humans
- don't know. most of that came from the alchemists experiments (librarians being exclusive to his lab). demons may not be literal demons, but simply a species native to the cavern. there's mention that the cavern's crystals have magical properties, so perhaps those are used, since cell experimentation wasn't done until much later
- built by some precursor people. still very much mysterious. the sap in the walls may be the cause of the malaise, though -- it's certainly what contaminated the sewers
- the source of the time keeper's power is uncertain, and since the queen is new, we know almost nothing about her either. it's possible the clock tower was created by the alchemist or from some supernatural thing, and it acts as a conduit for time manipulation -- the time keeper may not be special at all, but simply the only one able to use its powers (seeing as she only ever does so within the clock room). queen's reality powers are only present in her between-phases attack, so it may just be a property of her weapon, seeing as that happens when the beheaded uses it as well. where that weapon came from us unknown
- see above. we don't know. could be from the pagan cult of the fractured shrines, or some ancient artifact left by the precursors, or forged by some magically-attuned person like the time keeper or alchemist
- probably just some malaise creature
- likely not. we see pictures of the tutorial knight in high peak so she was probably just part of the king's guard and left to guard the prisons later on
- dark trackers are just ninjas of some sort. I don't think they specifically have any lore significance, although them and other enemies being able to teleport (even uninfected beings like the servants) is a bit odd and unexplained, though it may be there just for gameplay reasons
- it's possible she's just a native to the sepulcher. I wouldn't imagine the king mined the whole place out, so there were probably catacombs there to begin with. maybe the rest of her kind are in hiding or infected by the malaise. I'm not sure she has lore significance at all, though, and may be there just to tell the player how the forgotten sepulcher works
- no idea why stem cells exist. the fact that they have continuity through the time loop makes them difficult to talk about since how the time loop works is still very much up in the air. cells are apparently the 'essence of life itself,' being used to make the all-healing panacea and the homunculi. beyond that, we don't know what uses they have -- they are only given to the collector so he can make the panacea with them, after all. why we're able to extract them is unknown, perhaps the homunculi have some affinity with cells (seeing as the Queen can also pick up cells if she kills you it's not out of the question)
- uncertain. likely some more cosmic thing, which we'll learn about later
- apparently not. I think the castle used to be inhabited before it all got turned into a prison (it's not like they needed the extra living space with so many deaths from infection). it's possible there are other living areas that we just don't see in game
- probably just a game design feature. they don't show up anywhere in lore rooms or whatnot. may have a tie-in to homunculi specifically, though, I dunno
- we don't see that anywhere. while it makes sense, he didn't defend himself like the queen does, and since it's not mentioned anywhere I'm gonna assume it doesn't exist (yet)
The time keeper must be related to the queen guards because in the room where the 3 guards weapons were there is two blades one long and one short just like the time keeper.

I know there isn't much lore around it but the Abyssal Trident seems like it might have some serious connections to these more cosmic themes, seeing how it's a pristine golden weapon found in the middle of a rotting and mutating pile of wrecked ships and dead flesh, put in the secure vault probably for good reason
So after all king was smart enough to see the danger and try to keep it under control, even if he failed terribly he noticed it before anyone else could even after all this slaughter we can give him credit for something. Finnaly.

That means the creatures we saw earlier… Is the God of Dead Cells a giant Staphy? Also, with their similar appearances, I think they’re also Homunculi like the Queen and King/Beheaded, but perhaps considered failures by those that made them…
I like to think the queen comes back just like the beheaded with a different body like his and once they discover they learn the truth about whats happening beyond their home they team up to find a cure in Dead Cells 2

I find it interesting that the character mentioned in the Infected Shipwreck blurb is named 'Staphy,' because in the code the Leghugger pet is called 'LiliStaphy.' Since Leghugger is a small version of the armored shrimp, it's possible 'Staphy' refers to the armored shrimp and not an eldritch god.
Still, it seems odd to me that they'd reference Cthulhu of all things in the Shipwreck blurb when armored shrimp are most definitely not eldritch gods. It's possible that they were the original bringers of the malaise (in respect to the origins of the name 'Staphy'), although what 'Dobor' is remains mysterious. Given that we see undead on the boat in the ending, and if we assume the shrimp came from the odd scallops, it's possible the malaise first started elsewhere and then got carried to the island -- and the people there just didn't know it because they immediately quarantined themselves or got executed or imprisoned by their incredibly paranoid king.
There is another angle to view this at, though. Given the parallel to the Chant of Cthulhu, an incantation referencing a godlike being, and the mention of a place called 'Dobor', as well as the singular way in which Staphy is referenced (in *his* house...) it may be reasonable to conclude that 'Staphy' _does_ refer to some higher power.
Maybe the armored shrimps are the children or servants of Staphy, and the shrimps are no less of a little version of Staphy than Leghugger. After all, the malaise essentially rewrites the consciousness of the bodies it inhabits, and it's clear they do have some consciousness because despite being dead, zombies of the malaise cannot be possessed by homunculi (the King's soulless body, the uninfected Fractured Shrines cultist bodies, and the prisoner bodies the Beheaded usually possesses are all 'without consciousness after all -- I'll discount the early corpse of the tutorial knight and the royal gardener as not being possess-able due to it making no sense from a gameplay perspective). It seems likely to me that they are part of some hive mind. It could be that the shrimps were sent by Staphy to bring the malaise to the island and possibly other parts of the world, so that he could control the humans, be that as some retribution or grab for power.
Speaking of the homunculi, by the way, they do act very similar to the malaise, inhabiting bodies that lack a consciousness. Seeing as they are made with cells, is it possible cells are responsible for the malaise? Is that why the panacea counteracts the malaise, or does it counteract every disease due to cells being 'the essence of life itself?'
But that's a question for another time.
We can take this further if we look at the connections you made about R'lyeh in the video. In the past and in some rare places, we here mentions of the 'Architects.' While they now only remain mentioned by the architect key in the graveyard, there was once an inaccessible area called the Repository of the Architects as well. It's possible they're responsible for the randomly-shifting nature of the island. Perhaps Staphy is an Architect, or a fallen, outcast, or rogue one. Maybe the Architects are the ones worshiped by the pagan cult in the Fractured Shrines, and when the King took over the island, they sought vengeance by having Staphy or someone else create the Malaise.
Of course, that's all extremely speculative -- we don't really know anything about the Architects. But the city of Dobor could very easily be the removed Repository.
The King, a cruel man who killed for the survival of his kingdom and did everything to make sure he lived lesurely, but alas after his "death" he is revived again and again, forever living through the horrors he caused
I hope the king manage to save the country in the end somehow, like he goes back in time and stop the malaise just before it was too late by perhaps "accidentally" sacrificing himself, this way the people will think that the king is an arrogant yet great king who desperate and became cruel to safe his country and end up sacrificing himself for the country.
Meanwhile the headless get to hell where sinners get tortured to dead
, just to be revived to get tortured again, that can be the premises for the sequel.

Could be fun to go back in time and fight the king himself, with the king wielding the user's favorite weapon against them
May you go in the rabbit hole of the Hollow Knight lore. Or Hyper Light Drifter, not much spoke about this game and it's so beautiful. Oor Celeste, there's a lot of value and power in the early game story and late game that people doesn't much touch on because the game can be hard.
I think enough people have gone into HK, specifically Mossbag, but I'd be down for HLD
I don't think I'll ever do Hollow Knight because I don't think I'd be adding anything of value to the discussions and plenty of other creators have made content on it (some of whom are huge), so I feel I'll just be lost in the crowd there.
Hyper Light Drifter has been recommended/requested a few times, so maybe I'll take a closer look at that one!

Based on that statement at the bottom, I hope we’ll get some lore on the goblins. We know jack squat about them right now. Also there’s the matter of the statues on The Crown as well, whatever cultist was sealed inside Serenade, and what happened to The Timekeeper.

Some people think it might talk about the goblin creatures that are seen with the Collector between levels. Could be interesting to learn more about them! Maybe they know something!
Also, super side note: I just realized the other day that the goblins and the Time Keeper actually seem to have some design similarities (but didn't dig too deep into it). Maybe she's a female of that race?

Definitely.
The last two DLCs gave us two biomes which each had their own Lore Rooms. These, in addition to the Level Blurbs (the Fatal Falls biomes had 7 blurbs each), really helped flesh out the story of the areas as well as some of the characters we've seen before and had yet to see.
This DLC had no lore rooms at all (besides the Abyssal Trident room). Sure, by putting in an extra boss room, they lost out on one possibility to put lore rooms in, but the Shipwreck has nothing in terms of lore rooms which is pretty disappointing. I thought maybe I just got bad RNG at first, but I watched some other play throughs and I didn't see anyone else get any lore rooms either, so I think it was a deliberate choice by the Devs. They kind of made up for this by adding those two lore rooms in the Practice Makes Perfect update, and I guess they can always add more later, but it does make it feel like there's less lore. But the gameplay is why most people play Dead Cells, so I can understand why they wouldn't focus on lore too much.

Honestly, at first I was excited to fight the queen, I wanted to toy with her rapier and get her outfits...but after this, my heartbreak for understanding the story makes me not want to ever fight the queen, especially in the Kings outfit...

The Devs have mentioned that they want to experiment with more game modes, so maybe Co-op is something they're considering! I guess we'll see!

Well, the Queen is a humunculus, so maybe she survives, and just gets a new body.
I don't think a coop mode is completely impossible for Dead Cells, but if it happens it will definitely not have anything to do with the lore. The closest to that I imagine can happen is if in another boss fight the Queen joins you but like just fights in the background instead of being an active character
I like to believe that the light from the lighthouse was keeping the malaise at bay from the island.
My favourite moment was when the Beheaded said "It's dead cellin' time!" and proceeded to dead cell everywhere.
I just realized that dead cells just became Hollow Knight because of the concept of a perfect homonculus to save the kingdom from a disease
And the fact that the King is shorter than his wife is just Pale King moment right there
One note is the you outraged the gods line from the cursed chest could be a reference to curse of the dead gods where I believe that chest model originated (not to mention they already did a crossover with that game)
It would be cool for two player mode in the next dlc, the second being the queen.

I’m assuming it’s based on how strong and skilled the person is. The giant describes the king as a “model to us" and a description for the queen’s weapon blueprint praises her strength.
I'm going to guess it was passed down to him through his Father, but maybe he's the first King of the Island - the first one to consolidate all the regions of the Island under one ruler, and thus the first one to be King. We don't know for certain! Maybe it'll come out in the future!
@@SquatchGamingChannel A lot of the statues around the island and in HPC suggest he was a warrior, though. And with his skills he used to fight through the infected, it kinda backs this up. Could he have became the ruler through a revolution? The idea that he was a model for everyone might allude to this, as he would have been seen as the people’s king, as well as the implication from the Giant that the King was once a good and reasonable King, not a bloodthirsty one.

Dude I was just about to buy Dead Cells because it's on sale and now you make a video on it ! What a coincidence
It was meant to be. Lol. I definitely recommend the game though! Although it can be difficult and frustrating at times (if you've never seen what it takes to see the True Ending, you're in for a ride), but it's still incredibly fun and addicting! You'll be surprised how much time you can spend going through runs trying to get the perfect set.

I haven't played through the new stuff on any of the higher difficulties, but I can't imagine it's very easy! I remember the Devs saying the Lighthouse on 5BC is more difficult than the Spoiler Boss which I can believe.

I know this may sound a little cheesy but I kind of wish if the king was in his outfit it would play the cutscene in the outfit where the king would rather than just casually punting his wife into fire share one last kiss with her before pushing her in. Even shedding a tear at his wife’s death.
In the game's code, the name for the Leghugger (the summonable armored shrimp) is in fact Staphy, leading me to believe that upon entering the fisherman's house in the Stilt Village (Which I now believe is Dabor) you proceed to wake an eldritch god. I dunno, just a theory

@@SquatchGamingChannel Actually, it's apparently "little staphy" and I believe (Although this one I don't remember exactly) the armored shrimps are reffered to as just plain "staphy."
The skills are labeled "Summon little staphy," and the active afterwards "Little staphy stab." Maybe some sort of Apostate belief centered around the Armored Shrimps? I dunno, I'm just a guy who likes uberhards

"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh staphy dobor wgah'nagl fhtagn." might not have THAT much lore relevance, but it could still give some interesting background information. The Leghugger is internally reffered to as SpawnLilStaphy, LilStaphyStab, SpawnAdultLilStaphy and AdultLilStaphyStab. This means the leghugger either is staphy themself or at the very least a child of them. If we asume the former, then that would confirm stilt village's or the island's name to be Dobor (also you find leghugger in a house, so that part also checks out). It could also still be related to Staphylococcus, as the Leghugger seems to burst from Michel's corpse. I don't think this related to the malaise, as if it was, Michel's corpse would be reanimated (although it would be pretty cool and horrifying if the malaise is actually a leghugger inside the person's skin that controls their actions after their death). It was also not explicitly stated that this Staphy is a god (although it is somewhat implied by cthulhu also being a god), so maybe that was just a neat reference because leghuggers are also water monsters. But who knows? Maybe this cute little pet is actually a cosmic deity.
They should seriously make a series about this. It would be an absolute waste not to

That's a really depressing ending.
Considering you can see a painting of the Fisherman inside High Peak Castle, we can assume he had some importance to the castle or maybe even the king. He managed to survive throughout all of the Malaise outbreak and the King's measures to contain it, only to die just before he could be free.
I have a question. Why do you end up repeating the cycle after beating the hand and the king? Especially if you are capable of taking over his body. Why do you end up going back and possessing another body in the prison?
Because the whole kingdom was put in a time loop to keep the disease at bay and also to make time for making a cure but the making of the cure sorta got stopped and now everything is on a loop
@@pouncelygrin6699 So I suppose my second question has to be how the main character can be the king while also killing the king. How did he exist in two places at once in the same loop?
My understanding is that the experiment the Alchemist conducted on the King didn't destroy his old body to create the Homunculus, but merely removed the King's soul from his Malaise ridden body and attach it to the Homunculus, thereby "creating" two Kings in the world: one in the form of a Homunculus and one in the form of his former body.

Great video! Definitely earned a sub from me. I've had Dead Cells on the switch for like 2 years now. I went through it and finished 1BC and just played it as my loading game after that. Recently the Castlevania DLC hooked me in again and made me wonder about the lore of this game. UA-cam pointed me straight to this channel.
I know myself that I'm not hardcore enough to even go through the succeeding BCs but with your channel, I was able to understand more about this wonderful game. Your storytelling is awesome! How do you patch everything like this? Are you also personally playing through the runs?

For patching the story together, I get a framework of what the story is in my head from playing the game, but also reading outside resources (like the game's Fandom wiki page). Then I use information from the game to fill that out into what you see here. For new content/games, like how these DLCs were when I made these videos, I can only use the game which is always a little worrying because I'm always scared that I'll miss something. That hasn't happened yet, but it's only a matter of time! Lol.
And yes, that's me playing through the game. I do everything for these videos all on my own: playing the game; researching the story; writing the script; recording the audio and video; and editing it all together into the final product. It's a lot of work (even for short videos, it takes several weeks), but I enjoy it, and it helps people (or at the very least, entertains them for a bit), so it's pretty rewarding. I also know that I'm *very* fortunate to have as many people watch these that I do and I'm incredibly grateful for the time the spend watching these.

Did they actually plan for it or put it together as they went? I recall in a video covering the development that they never thought much on a story for the game, but focused on the gameplay. I'm sure that changed as time went on and they came up with something with DLC.

I know I'm a bit late for this game, but could the army of undead in the ship in the ending hints to Return to Castlevania DLC? Because they look like they're not infected with the Malaise and they look like ghouls to me.
25:05 Maybe Staphy is the God of the island, and the king separated or banned the people from the fractured shrines for worshiping Staphy, because he wanted all the praise for himself. The Queen may have been in it too for the praise and fame. Also the malaise might be Staphy's dreams or thoughts or revenge of punishment for worshiping a different entity. I mean Staphy could be also trying to erase all the non-believers so that new creatures, ones that worship staphy would be the only kinds of creatures living on the island.
Ngl, this sounds a lot like Hollow Knight, especially the forgotten deity committing acts of vengeance by an infection

It's honestly sad that the king is so blind and so short sighted that everyone is trying to stop him even before the malaise spread, even the ones that is very close to him.
