Nice video! I'm going to rebuild my rm250 soon. Do you have tips for me what i should check? It runs great at the moment, but i don't know its last rebuild.. sort of preventive rebuild. in your video you did the powervalve, is this necessary? Greets Ronald
If it runs great, no play in the bottom end (give the flywheel a wiggle), and has reasonable compression, I'd leave it alone. Maybe a new top-end just to be sure the piston doesn't grenade. I'd say cleaning the powervalve is advisable whenever you do a top-end. In the manual it says to clean every 6hrs. It also says to change the piston every 10... The carbon build-up can impinge the movement and can cause it to stick, creating a rather sudden powerband. At least more than usual :D It's also good to check it as the parts wear out and notch causing the power-valve to really have difficulty opening. It happened on my RM and required a bit of fettling with a dremel and some burrs.
Are there certain threads/websites you referenced for this rebuild? If so, do you think you could maybe direct me towards them? I have the same year bike and was thinking about a full rebuild
yzfBrandon hi. no, I didn't use either of those. I followed the manual drive.google.com/file/d/0B2jAeo_GlywrU2lnY0RzNFZ5Mzg/view?usp=drivesdk. it says it's a 2007 but the differences between an 07 and 06 are neglible.
jonnoMoto it's a tough one I know. by the looks of the blue gaskets at the base of the cylinder it looks like the top end was done recently but I can't be sure. I was going to use it this summer and tear into it next fall. It's like a knock that comes and goes. I've gone hours without hearing it then it comes back randomly for a few seconds. I'll check like you said on the flywheel side for play.
iv a question, iv an 06 rm250 and i noticed the other day when i stop and let the clutch out with the bike still running i can hear a loud noise from the clutch area but when i pull the clutch in it stops, is this normal or is there an issue, iv only just got the bike and it was my 1st ride out i noticed it.
ye i plan on checking it and im thin king of fitting a new basket and the rekluse exp 3.0 as i ride enduro as well as track and i seem to stall alot on tricky sections

Was the knock there all the time? I have a 2006 and get an odd random knock once in a while. I'm just not sure where it comes from.
Alex Laplante nope. it's easy to find out if it's the crank. take off the cover and feel for play. do you get knocks at low revs?
Yes at low revs but only some times. It's done it st mid to 3/4 throttle as well.
Alex Laplante hmm. I did 1 race with the bad crank and it rattled like hell, but only at low revs. any idea how many hours are on the engine?

Alex Laplante I'd also check things on the frame like bolts. a very loose chain can make a knocking sound on the swingarm sometimes.

it's normal. it slightly went away when I rebuilt the engine with new bearings but came back soon enough. it's been like that on both my rm250s
Omg thank god. I was about to buy full new clutch system thinking my clutch was goin or maybe my basket was on its way out. Thanks for the reply man
No probs. I'd check what basket it has tho. OEM ones notch up really easily.

Dean W Eep. Pricey! Have you looked into a flywheel weight first? Made a lot of difference for me.
What kind of rims are those? Nice rebuild.
Cheers. I think they are SM rims. They came stock on 06 RM250 carmichael replica editions
