Auto Capture is a great feature it works very well, I was never able to get photos of my dog when playing frisbee since I was the one throwing it but now with Auto Capture I can throw the frisbee with my dog running at the camera and getting great shots and it locks right on his eye. I set it up to detect motion and subject detection, when it doesn’t see my dog it stops taking photos. I use Auto Area AF to track him all over the yard.
For example in islotated part of Altai mountains we set cameratraps from DSLRs for capturing snow leopards, we just make from standart camera phototrap. This option will be for us vary useful.
This is a disaster. Now I have to buy the 180-600 to sit on my Z9 while I used the 70-200 with a teleconverter on my Z8 freehand. I love bird photography, but no one pays me to do it.
@@VIDEOVISTAVIEW2020 that is pretty simplistic. It took me four years to make a living as a wedding and portrait photographer. You don’t snap your fingers and make money.
@@intrinsicimagery I am not saying you can make tons of money that can afford you a living by doing bird photography. What I mean is at least you can earn a few bucks and not a zero.
Thanks for this video. My personal experience of Auto Capture can be summarized in four words: A work in process. Definitely seems like this was designed by engineers, and not real photographers. It has promise, for sure, but it needs a LOT of refinement...and simplification, not more options.
nice! I have at least one use case I thought of during this video! I have a Wetlands I visit often and I can see going w/ my z9 w/400 and d850 w/600 and use the z9 to watch a Pileated Nest thats about 300' away so I bring a small tripod and have it waiting for entry/exit from the nest in the tree while I use my 850 captuing the Osprey's, Eagles, Blue Herons etc.!
The first thing I thought of when this feature debuted was those commercial photographers on the Tail of the Dragon with motorcycles. Set a good composition, hook up to a battery pack and the Z8/9 will basically do the work for you all day. If this works with Snapbridge or Tether you could hotspot your laptop and be adding these to the sales site as the camera works. Days done and you have everything set on the sales page already and job done. Pretty great honestly.
Excited to try the feature this weekend on my Z9 with hummingbirds around my feeder. What auto focus settings do you or anyone here recommend for that set up? Thanks.
I updated my firmware to 4.0 went to motion settings and when I press start my display goes dark. Nothing happens. After many different tentatives still the same black screen I decided to reset my menu settings to default. Now I can get into the "start" and change the settings. I put on the same settings you did yours and when I press the record button to start motion detection then start shooting nothing happens. The camera senses nothing. What a pain in the rear. What about the default menu settings that is not making the camera start shooting when a subject moves into the frame I have no idea. Beautiful on theory. 😅😅😅😅 real world, zero results. Very frustrating
Nice information.I just updated my Z8 and found that in auto capture mode I can not see bird direction mode but i can see only auto, pppl animal and vehicle mode.. What could be the reason?
Thanks for the sharing the experience lessons that I can apply. Not sure if anyone mentioned this but I turned off VR on my 400 2.8 F-mount because I could hear the motor running constantly. I noticed this after my battery died pretty quickly and started trouble shooting. VR isn't needed on a tripod anyway. lol. But just something to be aware of.
This is an amazing feature but I would like to see on a Z30 cheap but a bit better quality than a trap camera. So you can afford to set up a couple of cameras to catch that moment without stressing about the Z9 being stolen. Perhaps even a M 4/3 camera small lens and usually with a wider DOF.
I think auto-capture's best case scenario requires a high degree of predictability within a time parameter instead of randomness. Of course, this inefficiency will disappear with faster computing power, AF scanning technology and better algorithm. But for now, the subject needs to appear at a location X,Y that it can be detected by AF point(i, i+1, i+2,...,493) within the current AF scanning cycle before it moves to the a new location outside the cycle. So, an object that appears on the top half of the frame can remain undetected if the Z9 is still scanning the bottom half. Another issue that is common on CCTV is the time interval between the AF and shutter triggers. Hence, auto-capture may works better in conjunction with the Pre-Release Burst feature.
Thanks so much for all this work. I just picked up the Z9 and am excitedly full of questions about what it is able to do. Can't wait to get out there and try the autocapture feature, going in armed with this knowledge ahead of time. Cheers!
I have used Pre Capture and the Jpeg are pretty good. I use Capture One and use the Edit with Topaz AI, creating a TIFF and the returned file edits ok. Not a good as a RAW but not terrible either. Cannot understand why they don't allow a small RAW file the camera is capturing a RAW image and converting it so writing a compressed RAW should not be a bottle neck...
Great video. This Auto Capture is amazing. Seen a lot of clips online. I think this Auto Capture will be more applicable to sports. But still I think if a wildlife photographer is creative, I am sure it can work in some cases.
We were in your area back in 2018 and loved Potter's Marsh. We were in Anchorage 2 days and spent about 4 hours each day there. The terns were feeding babies while we were up there. wow, seeing your photos brings back beautiful memories.
This gimmick is an insult to photographers and photography. If people can't see where this is heading "and it's not a good place, not just for photography" I can't help them.
camera traps have been around forever. it is a device you added to your camera with remote shutter wired connection, plus game cameras. It really no difference. AND it takes a lot of pre-planning to get a GOOD shot and even harder to make a wall hanger with it.
@@WILDALASKA This has nothing to do with camera traps. This crap and crap like it is slowly creeping into everything. Most people don't know that they are being conditioned to eventually like their obsolescence.
@@jfphotography69 I feel every new innovation/invention/change and generation has said that. AI and machine learning have made things "interesting". But it still takes a LOT of skill and and eye to make a good photo.
Sounds pretty useless and impractical to me…. Did the 3D tracking improve with the 4.0 firmware update ? Thanks.😊 Or did the AF improve in any of the modes ?

getting paid would be nice. Its a bad expensive habit this photography thing

Thanks Scott. Not a Nikon shooter myself but my friend shoots with the Z9. I passed this on to her.
cool
Dont shoot Nikon but nice to see them pushing the ball downfield
YES. It means that the other camera manufacturers will be probably adding the feature down the road.

depends on subject and setup. Open scene id use auto area. busier scene id use Wide-L personally
Could it be set up to capture both photos and videos? Take photos first and switch to video and vice versa
don't believe so
Great info ta. I have tried my z9 on auto capture and it works great if the operator, me, gets the settings right...
same
I forgot to ask about the ratio of acceptable shots to total shots. Seems pretty low.
It gets a good hit rate depending on how you have it set. Being that hit rate is up to you getting the scenario and settings right

Sounds like you have an issue with the camera and firmware. I would suggest taking it into your camera shop and have them troubleshoot it for you.

Sounds like an oversight by Nikon.
not sure I haven't messed with it on the Z8 yet. I usually only mess with it on the z9 in the last spring with the arctic terns.

yes the IS on all lenses will be constantly be moving especially on big lenses.

My tests are not so great until now… I try to capture hummingbirds… they seem too fast for the camera… work on progress!
May need to use the pre-capture along with the auto capture. you will get Jpeg images as it doesn't work with RAW
