Excellent video! It is always great to get a reminder to do something like compass calibration, this will become my routine at the beginning of every flight day. @@dosomestuff1949 according to DroningOn video entitled,”How to NOT lose your drone(flyaway)-Beginners Guide” you should calibrate your drone at least first thing once each flying day. He mentions that the drone’s compass works on thresholds before it notifies you to do a compass calibration. However, even though your compass reads NORMAL and it doesn’t request a compass calibration, you should do one first thing in the morning to reset the compass calibration threshold even if your DJI drone says ,”A Home Point has been updated Please check it on the map!”, because compass calibration threshold maybe just about to request that you do one, but you are now flying up in the air and have no way of knowing that your drone needs to have it’s compass calibrated to maintain it’s direction in the sky. It would be at this point that your drone would lose it’s compass direction and go into ATTI MODE. If that happens then to avoid a fly away you had better be an excellent drone pilot to be able to direct your drone back down to safety or say bye-bye to your drone or pay the consequences if it hits someone or something and causes grave damage. So, if you want to keep your drone safe and not pay for a crash damages to it or others please do a compass calibration first thing each flying day to reset the compass calibration threshold! Just suffered ATTI mode. It flew away directly into a tree then dropped into the lake. I fished it out quick and pulled power along with the memory card. All videos were not lost and after an extensive drying session the thing has come back to life and it surprisingly didn’t suffer any arm or propeller damage either. Will definitely recalibrate EVERY time. I did not do a calibration before this flight. Lesson learned. Haven’t flown it again yet but hopefully it’s all good
Interesting and thank you, 90% of the time i fly all my drones home manually and do not use RTH unless i have to. As for calibration mentioned, i agree 100%, better safe than sorry.
Hi Ash; I think the most frequent cause of flyaways for Mavic Mini owners is the inability for the Mini to maintain its position due to wind or when it's unable to overcome the wind on RTH. And people underestimating the higher windspeed up above is the key cause of this..... Hope You're keeping well matey! :) Ian in London (in Essex)

Thnx Ash to remind me again. I started flying in 2017 and regularly calibrated the compass that time, but over time, since it always went well, i started to skip the good habbit of re-calibrating before a new day of flights. It has to go wrong only one time. Thanks👍🏻
I have the same drone. And I have had a drone fly away with a parrot bebop. Mine was a little different it lost something and just literally flew away not responding to input untill disconnect... Is it possible for a mavic air2 to put it into atti mode to try it out. I've had a few different drones some make u even control altitude with a throttle... Is it that bad?
I always calibrate before my first flight of the day. I also test the RTH at close range (where it’s easy to take control if there is an issue) before sending it out far.
Awesome video. I had an hs510 flyaway and I was able to save it, I practiced with a bugs3 mini. Been flying for one week now, if I hadn’t practiced with the bugs that drone would be gone I think. Nice advice here thank you.
I’m a little different. I only calibrate when I change areas by 30 miles or more. Only ATTI modes I have had happen is when flying under some bridges. Metal not a good friend to the compass 😎. Absolutely love your thumbs down comments with all your videos. Thanks for sharing Ash
My first brushless GSP drone was a Hubsan H501S. Of course I bought it on Banggood and it was shipped from China. Boy, what an exotic experience that was. I got emails in Chinese! I waited 3 weeks for it to arrive. When it was delivered I charged up the battery. Little did I know this would be the "good times" and the only memories of our time together. I have no idea if I calibrated the compass correctly or not. I had never had a GPS drone and I had no concept of the difference. It flew in my backyard to a height of 6 ft so I thought I was ready to take it to the park and fly it around. As soon as I got to the park I flew it above the trees to get a look at my neighborhood. That's the last I ever saw of it. I looked at my watch and it was just 6 hours from the time UPS rang my doorbell. That's when the madness took over...

I just experienced what i now believe is my first fly away. Only there where some real odd factors at play. At first. Without watching this video before i already do calibrate the compass before each fligth, it just seemed to make sense. So i did this time too. I actually was filming graffiti on walls which could of easily been done with a handheld camera as i wasnt flying higher than myself and actually walking along with the drone. It was a bit windy but nothing crazy, visited the beach last weekend and that was crazy but the pro 2 performed like a charm. But before i fully drift off. I was filming walls , i make a turn to go straigth towards another wall across a grass field. I start by positioning the drone in the straigth line i want it to go in and ever so gently start to push forward. Instantly i notice the drone is moving forward in a 45degree diagonal line quite fast, instantly all of a sudden above a creek which was next to me heading towards the trees on the other side of the creek. In full panic mode i pushed pause. Nothing, again and again and then it crashed into the trees. I was so lucky that it passed the branches over the water and made it acros to crash in leaves. Luckily no physical damage at all but im baffled as to how this could of happened and im still coming down from shock. Im not super experienced but experieced enough to know that this was beyond odd and i cant explain it. No signal lost no weird interferrence or nothing. Im so glad i wasnt at an higher altitude or further away or near people or that it crashed in the creek. Of course im out of my warranty period. This is my first crash ever and i hope it will be my last. I hope you can bring some sense to this and help me calm down a bit. I love my drone too much and im always carefull. I just want to understand what happenend here. Ps. I was flying a Mavic Pro 2 in position mode. Thanks from The Netherlands!
Thanks for the heads up very informative video. Before I stepped up to GPS enabled drones I had a lot of experience with toy drones like the ones you see at malls so I'm pretty confident in flying a drone that doesn't have GPS stability. But I always wondered what Attitude mode was.
Thanks for the calibration info, some people hold the standpoint that you should NOT calibrate, even if the app tells you to. That makes no sense to me. There is so much mis-information spread about this and for example battery handling, it's great we have people with common sense like you who tell us how it is... Why do people prefer to listen to some guy in some forum instead of the manufacturer's guidelines? It's not in DJI's interest for us to lose our drones.
Yes a lot of misinformation sadly, and a lot of arrogance as well from individuals that really don't know what they're talking about. There's no harm in calibration, so just do it at the start of each day. Thanks for your comment!
Great and useful tips and information, Ash! I must admit that I have sinned regarding compass calibration and only did so when the warning came up. Have probably been lucky so far then.😉
I've lost mine on the 12th floor on a vacation in mexico i lost total control of it and it went steering right into the freeway where it crashed against the divider and broke both wings 😭😭😭😭 i ran into the freeway to get it and it was the worst vacation ever 😢😢😢 this video was super helpful ,as i am purchasing a new drone the mavic mini . thank you for the insights i know why it lost control due to two reasons the calibration and gps 😭😭😭. worst feeling ever not being able to bring it back in 😓
You need to preset RTH on lost connection instead of hover, also in case of strong wind, you need yo get tge drone to lower altitude and S (sport) mode to manually override and control the return, that is apart from the calibration ln everythong and update location.
My mini 2 flew away recently. Luckily it hit the side of the mountain and broke 3 propellers but I could retrieve the drone. I had absolutely no control from the remote to the drone. It just did its thing despite my efforts to fly it manually. No error indication as well. I still don't know what caused the flyaway. After replacing the propellers the thing flew as if nothing happened and I didn't calibrate anything before or after. But after watching this I might as well do calibration before every flight
I've been always referring to "flyaways" as cases where a drone actually "flies away", not just goes into ATTI. Yes, i had my Mavic (first one, the "pro") losing GPS once, far out of VLOS, and it didn't regain reception til landing and reboot. But... video reception has been rock stable, and while i am not an FPV racer guy or something, i generally have no issue orienting myself from up there, nor an issue flying in ATTI, so i've obviously brought it back and never called it a "flyaway". BTW, the times it actually tells you to recalibtate the compass are often the absolute worst to actually do so, because it "feels" something is wrong with it at the places of mild magnetic interference, exactly the spots you DON'T want to calibrate at.
Well, whether you lose the drone or not, switching into ATTI and drifting off is a fly-away. If you're able to control it and bring it back then you've recovered the drone. Terminology is subjective, others will have a different view on what a 'flyaway' is. Thanks for your comment!
I was flying my holystone hs700e today in good conditions - minimal wind, clear blue skies. I was flying in tripod mode too. All of a sudden my drone went berserk and flew away hard left at full speed and would not respond to any manual input from the controller. I had to keep visual on it until it hit several trees and thankfully fell to the ground rather than being stuck up at height in a tree. Was this 'drone fly away' or was it some other malfunction?

I fly my drone manually and it still did i fly away and lost it yesterday. It sucks because i could not find it after it took off. It went into the sky on its own and flew away
Here are a few things that may cause fly aways: 1) If you are flying in a new area, and you haven't checked available satellites? And your drone depends on satellite positioning to obtain GPS coordinates??? And only one satellite can be locked on with some radio stations & ham radio stations within 1/2 mile of where you decided to fly??? What do you expect other than a fly away? I don't know if you can download an app to find satellites available. I do know that you can use an app to determine if 2.5ghz is filled with cell phones. I don't know if the drones have the ability to change channels on the 2.5ghz frequency, but if they don't???? bad engineering, and this is (IMO) why you are having a loss of control. 2) If you are using 2.5ghz, and are in a densely populated area, everyone and their grandmother is on some phone using this same frequency, and you WILL have interference even though you don't want it. 5ghz is a better option, more channels. 3) Purchase a spotting scope, and place it on a tripod near where you are operating your drone. If your drone is out of sight, you won't know what way to turn the controls. You need to see the drone in order to know when it has picked up a signal again, and that you have control again. Moving altitude up and down moderately quick while looking into the spotting scope? as soon as you see the drone respond to your input, quickly send it the RETURN HOME command. If it goes in a wrong direction, press cancel over and over and over. Return to controller may be more accurate than return to home, assuming return to home uses GPS. In conclusion: You've got to use logic with this, and realize that a loss of remote control combined with a loss of visual line of sight (or drone is too far away to see without a spotting scope). Again, as I stated before, up and down altitude motions until you see your drone respond, as soon as you see this, CANCEL return to home and switch it to RETURN TO CONTROLLER. Wind has been known to interfear with radio frequencies, and may also contribute to the loss of range. Loss of range due to wind, loss of sight, loss of signal due to cell phone interference, or because you are flying in an area where merchant marines have installed a microwave beam on some roof top that shoots the microwave down the river channel???? These things should be looked for with the spotting scope.
Hi today i fly my mavic mini drone upto a hight of 3m and after 2 mints it suddenly start moving towards left side and it was almost crashed. Now i tried again and again but after take off it moves itself slightly goes down and to one side and when i fly back it to original position its again move .what is the problem plz must reply
I have the phantom 3 standard first. It had 1 problem 1 time. It started spinning and doing wild things and I was able to get it back. Now I have the air2.
I'm here because of Atti mode I experienced yesterday with my JJRC X20. I was playing in a new spot inside my housing complex and it was right beside a power grid substation so that's probably why. The first thing that happened was the DISTANCE sensor suddenly indicated 2.2km while the drone was right in front of me so it activated the auto RTH away from me to an unknown location, luckily it has not lost signal to the RC so I managed to cancel the RTH and regained control of the aircraft before it got too far away. It then behaved like a rodeo bull on a leash refusing to fly stably to which directions I pushed my joystick to. I checked the display and the status in the app is still "aircraft is normal (GPS mode)". the Joystick display was also displaying Mode 2 (GPS mode) and GPS on. so I really didn't know what was going on I started to panic and warned a few neighbors that were enjoying their evening stroll to clear the area as I might need to crash land this drone, luckily there weren't that many people around. I did the best I could to bring it to a clearing in my complex fighting against the wind that were blowing unpredictably and after a few hesitation I push down on the left joystick down hoping for the best. It narrowly missed a water hydrant on the way down and miraculously landed a few meters from me (pretty hard but quite alright considering what was happening). Hopefully this can help some of you in the future should this happened to you.
This happened to me this evening and I had absolutely NO CONTROLS ON THE REMOTE . This drone has a 15 minute battery and I had no idea it could even go as high as it went . As soon as I pushed the takeoff button it zipped right off into the sky and didn’t stop . I watched it turn into a dot , and then totally disappear. This little drone went well over 30 thousand feet and kept going ! This really concerned me because if it’s potential to get sucked into a commercial jetliner , and then of course what it may land on when the battery died. I have video of it shortly before I lost it WAY UP in the sky . I was just flying it inside and a bit outside . I have no idea what happened but it was almost as if something took it over as soon as I pushed the takeoff button, (which was actually from my hand instead of the ground this time ) and it went straight up and away. I pushed every button I had and then I heard two like songs almost . One that had tones ascending , and then one that had tones descending . What the HELL happened here ?
Shame on Me! I only did a calibration once in 1 and a half years with my Evo1. I'm going to start doing this each time I move to a different location (on a different day). I still get nervous flying because of a flyaway. So far never had a problem. Thanks for the reminder on calibrating.
Well, yesterday i flew manual and the drone did not react at all. The drone has no gps, he was at full power going up, throttle cut did not work, even steering. Something in the area must fucked up my signal. Drone went into the air high, the wind took it with him. Still not found him back, i believe hes somewhere far far away. I also fly with heli's everyday, still trying to figure out what is happening. I know people that got this with a plane aswell, they got him back after a month miles away. If they ever find my drone back, it's ready for the junkyard anyway.
Fly aways demonstrate you're never in control but DJ is controlling the unit. My 2nd day of flying a DJI mini 3 the thing just flew away. It acceleraged up to 2000 feet and 2 miles away. Compass and GPS was calibrated; but why does the drone just take off and fly a huge distance away?
@4:11 100m up and 1000m away is beyond VLOS, so u are already flying against regulations. Most people have flyaway when they click "return to home" which probably is a compass error mixed with RTH autopilot. I have always landed manually. I cannot stress this enough - people need to be able to fly in atti mode and land their RPA themselves. I used to calibrate compass before each flight, but nowadays I usually do not. I have been flying for a few years, and I had a compass error and nearly lost my Phantom P3P once. I did a calibration before the flight, but it still failed me. Even the most calibrated drone will fail in the event of magnetic interference, and not all have 2 compasses.
Thanks for the comment Mike, however 1000m away isn't necessarily beyond VLOS, I can see my drone at that range, some of course won't be able to. I have good eyesight, some do not. Flyaways do not occur when they click RTH because RTH won't work if the compass has failed, however RTH does of course risk does have its inherent risks in regards to not being setup correctly
@@Droning-ONIf you can see your drone, let alone be able to work out where it is facing at 1km distance you must have truly excellent vision. But to be honest, I still have not experienced a flyaway, and I rarely, if ever calibrate the compass anymore. My P4 pro asked for an IMU calibration the other day and I did one then, but in over 50 hours of flight time, I have never had the issue. On the local DJI Facebook groups (and this is just my observation) it seems that quite a few lose it when doing a RTH.
@@mkphotofilm honestly, I can see and fully navigate my drone at 1km range, but I have been flying RC since for 30 years, so I'm more than skilled in LOS flight having flown helicopters, wings, RC planes and jets over the years. Drones lost during RTH generally are due to either the battery failing on the way back and it landing wherever it might be at that point, or it hitting an obstacle.
@@mkphotofilm perhaps, but highly unlikely seen as the home-point is automatically set as soon as GPS is fully acquired, changing the home-point isn't something that your average user knows how to do, or would do by accident.
Just had my first flyaway (Mavic Pro) It went into ATTI mode and decided to fly backwards...at full speed. The controller wouldn't respond...it just kept going backwards. Luckily it hit a tree and came down. But I had NO control. There was minor damage, the battery was thrown out and the rubber grommet holding the camera was dislodged from its seating. Bit afraid to put it up again next time. But will calibrate and do thorough safety check. If it does it again...well droning ....had a good run.
@@hiddemVm No, it hasn't. I think it was a combination of low light, my old phone freezing and maybe a gps signal loss. I'm still hesitant to fly at twilight. I have a new phone now and I cross my fingers but it has flown correctly ever since then.

I say this because while the drone does seem to fly away its actually been blown away while probably trying to fly towards home, so it's flying towards home not flying away, but being blown away for sure... You need to set the S (sport mode) to counter a strong wind to manually override and always make sure to preset the RTH instead of hovering in case of a lost connection
Hey, I found your video after loosing my SG907 pro drone since I was looking for some answers. I was flying it in my garden to train myself, it suddenly took off and gained 40 or 50 meters of altitude and literally flew away all by himself, not responding to any command. I was not able to get it back, but I may have prevented it if I knew to calibrate the gps more frequently, even though it doesn't explain why it didn't respond or why it gained altitude. I'll try and get more informations before buying the next one ;)
I finally bought a Spark, today was my 2nd day messing with it. I am an experienced pilot as far as flying. I have many non GPS models. I just wanted to get familiar with the Spark before sending it out too far. Yesterday I flew about 100 feet away and hit rth a few times without a problem. Today I had a problem. Keeping it fairly close again I hit rth and it wanted to land where it was, just across the street. It didn't come back on its own for some reason. Another time I hit rth and I heard it say atti mode, it went up 30 meters and froze! I couldn't control any direction or up or down, I let it hover until I heard low battery. At this point I started to panic a little. Should I let it run out of battery and let it fall from 30 meters and hope to catch it? I moved my position a little and walked away and all of a sudden the Drone took off fast going away from me northeast! I was freaking out I'm going to lose it my second day? Somehow I regained control and manually brought it back and landed it. But I wonder why it froze? Now I'm afraid to even fly it again or at least use rth function. But that's why I get GPS drones for that function. If I'm out 1/4 mile or more it's difficult to tell which way it's facing unless I look at the screen. But what happens if I lose that visual on my phone? Just bought a 5G Samsung for flying some of my GPS quads that require 5G. Dji is supposed to be all that? I'm not sure after today. Any idea why it froze and no commands from the controller were working?
It is not correct to recalibrate the compass before each flight and is not advised by DJI. If it really needs calibrating it tells you. It may be that local magnetic interference is causing the disturbance that causes the re-calibration message and if you do this in the proximity of the said interference, that really will cause a fly away when you lift off as the IMU and compass start to disagree. This topic has been much discussed on the various forums and the consensus from the experts who really understand drone physics insist that it is a completely pointless and possibly risky practice.
I'd suggest watching the video again, the advice we give is NOT to recalibrate before every single flight, just before each flight of the day. We're experts, we've been working with and flying drones for far longer than some randomers on a discussion forum. Thanks for the comment.
@@Droning-ON Recalibrating on each flying day/occasion is plain wrong. Checking the drone's orientation on the app's map (in DJI Go etc) against its real orientation is the single most important step in preventing fly-aways. Ensuring the compass is correctly orientated at T/O is vital, as that is where the IMU takes its initial reference from and any disagreement here due to magnetic interference will cause chaos as the drone moves away from the source of the interference.. See sar104's brilliant explanation of compass function - not a 'randomer' but a respected expert. No matter how long you've been doing it, you can still learn how to improve if you have an open mind!
@@localman2209 you're entitled to your opinion, but recalibrating on each flying day isn't at all plain wrong, many commercial operators do precisely this, to ensure that their expensive equipment is correctly tuned and ready for a day of professional flying. almost lost my spark yesterday ... I can't believe I got it back on the boat with 18mph winds and caught it at full speed, had a couple tiny cuts and lost a propeller. scary AF
I lost my mavic 3, 3 weeks ago in far north of Scotland, photographing stac polly. My mistake was I flew it from the car park in the wind. However, I did not expect to lose connection with RC, but I did, and I could not get a connection back, this revolted in me frantically hitting the home button with no success, end result, drone lost in the mountains. I have flown remote.control planes, helicopters, and dji drones from the second edition phantom all the way up to mavic 3. I have flown around this mountain before with the phantom, and mavic air 2, but this time I lost my more expensive mavic 3, the only thing I can think of that was different in the flight was using the new dji rc with screen, all other times I used my phone with the rcs
I guess I don't get it? Because I fly the drone away, why can't I fly it back? I have never used RTH or auto take off/landing. These modern drones are so easy to fly, I never felt the need to use some automated system for assistance. I came from a time when flying RC aircraft meant your fingers were always on the sticks./..
rth should still work right? anyways i always keep an eye on the direction of the drone through the app to see where its pointed so should anything happens ill know which direction the drone is ^_^
Unfortunately not, during a compass failure the drone doesn't know which way it is facing, therefore RTH will fail and the drone will end up drifting on manual control Thanks for the comment!
And remember to stay away at least 10 meters away from any metal and if possible ANY object when calibrating the compass You can calibrate the compass next to a metal object, the drone might accept it, 8 meters up when the down vision system doesn't see the ground anymore + getting away from the magnetic object might cause this compass error midair and then RIP Try your best to spin the drone around 360 degrees in both directions, it might recalibrate midair, at least that's what I read on some forums
Like he mentioned in the video. GPS and compass are 2 different things. GPS tells you where you are, compass tells your where you are facing. The GPS doesn't do both. RTH uses both GPS and compass so if you have GPS only that's great. If you crash it it will tell you where your drone is but you won't actually be able to fly in the right direction. if you don't re calibrate often it might think that home is north when it's actually south. Idk if that makes sense. Hopefully it helps
Exactly. I had a fly away and got message saying magnetic interference. Land immediately. Then GPS lost. Then compass lost. Therefore RTH doesn’t work.
I was flying under a highway overpass that was about 300 meters long and my air went into atti mode. All my inputs were way exaggerated and too far away to see how close I was to the columns. Luckily I was able to guide it back to me lol
I was flying my Jjrc x5 today, she'd leave at basically normal full speed ahead no worry's right? Well out 600+ meters and turn around to come back and it's just basically sitting there.... Goes left fast, right fast and away fast but nada coming back... Well unknown to me without so much as a breeze down on the ground,there was a about a 10m/s or more headwind 115meters up, the only way it was coming back was the good ole return to home button function! In rth I suppose it has the ability to apply extra power to push on back, not for that she'd been gone. Point is always check the windage at altitude with a little test before blazing off towards whenever 🧐 if not for the quads failsafe abilities it would have stayed out there 🤦🥴.
Happened to me with mini 3 pro , forgot to remove gimbal cover , and took off , suddenly the bird flew away luckily that was inside home, it the wall and stick at wall till broken two propellers, mean while it didn't respond to my RC.
I thought atti meant if you let go of the controller that it would just fall lol, I realised it just meant if you move the thumb stick the drone moves with the momentum even if you let go rather than just remaining in its lock position.

Hi there I have mavic air and worried about it just falling out of the sky. Because I had a dji phantom 3 pro and one day it just fell and smashed to bits no reason so just keep thinking the air will any advice please
Tell me what to do, when you initate a return to home and you loose 100% connectivity? AND your drone drone does not return home as you have told it to in the setup? AND the drone does not return to home when connectivity is lost? AND does not return to home when the battery begins to fail? AS if the drone lost all GPS coordinates as well as RC transmission? Thats what happened to me Sat. night. Thats what I call a "Fly away"
I had a magnetic interference and tried to land immediately then lost gps then said lost compass. Then drone went on a ride to wherever it wanted. RTH doesn’t work if you lose GPS and compass. I found out the hard way unfortunately
Instead of buying another drone to practice ATTI mode, you could practice flying indoors. Also, you can tape over your sensors and force ATTI on a DJI drone. It's very good experience to learn to fly in ATTI mode - you really have to fly the craft rather than point and shoot.
I wouldn't recommend that at all, taping over sensors and flying indoors will result in dangerous flying by most consumers, and crashes. Buying a non-GPS drone and flying it outdoors is a far better option. Thanks for the comment!
I had a drone go ATTI on me, over water, somehow I kind of figured out how to keep it in a general area but couldn't get it to fly back to me. I kept fighting the wind and keeping it in a spot where it wouldn't hit a tree. Then GPS kicked back in. Phew.
nice! i still fly some toy drones and tinywhoops, and i fly my old phantom 2 all the time in atti cause it is so much fun! luckly i never got in an flyaway with my mavic pro😃
Haha coincidently my first compass-failure was with the original Phantom 3 Professional, nothing similar since so fingers crossed the tech has evolved and improved!
DroningON i do think it is improving as dji now put 1 compass instead of 2 in the mavic air 2, there must be a reason for that, and that's probably because it's getting better
My last flyaway was when my Phantom 2 was attacked by a swarm of bees. The result was a shut-down and it fell out of the sky. Fortunately landed in thick grass and not badly damaged (but was covered in bee bits).

@@dosomestuff1949 according to DroningOn video entitled,”How to NOT lose your drone(flyaway)-Beginners Guide” you should calibrate your drone at least first thing once each flying day. He mentions that the drone’s compass works on thresholds before it notifies you to do a compass calibration. However, even though your compass reads NORMAL and it doesn’t request a compass calibration, you should do one first thing in the morning to reset the compass calibration threshold even if your DJI drone says ,”A Home Point has been updated Please check it on the map!”, because compass calibration threshold maybe just about to request that you do one, but you are now flying up in the air and have no way of knowing that your drone needs to have it’s compass calibrated to maintain it’s direction in the sky. It would be at this point that your drone would lose it’s compass direction and go into ATTI MODE. If that happens then to avoid a fly away you had better be an excellent drone pilot to be able to direct your drone back down to safety or say bye-bye to your drone or pay the consequences if it hits someone or something and causes grave damage. So, if you want to keep your drone safe and not pay for a crash damages to it or others please do a compass calibration first thing each flying day to reset the compass calibration threshold! It only takes a moment on a good drone!!!! I hope that long winded explanation helps! Happy flying!

Just suffered ATTI mode. It flew away directly into a tree then dropped into the lake. I fished it out quick and pulled power along with the memory card. All videos were not lost and after an extensive drying session the thing has come back to life and it surprisingly didn’t suffer any arm or propeller damage either. Will definitely recalibrate EVERY time. I did not do a calibration before this flight. Lesson learned. Haven’t flown it again yet but hopefully it’s all good
Interesting and thank you, 90% of the time i fly all my drones home manually and do not use RTH unless i have to. As for calibration mentioned, i agree 100%, better safe than sorry.
Hi Ash; I think the most frequent cause of flyaways for Mavic Mini owners is the inability for the Mini to maintain its position due to wind or when it's unable to overcome the wind on RTH. Thnx Ash to remind me again. I started flying in 2017 and regularly calibrated the compass that time, but over time, since it always went well, i started to skip the good habbit of re-calibrating before a new day of flights. It has to go wrong only one time. Thanks👍🏻

I have the same drone. And I have had a drone fly away with a parrot bebop. Mine was a little different it lost something and just literally flew away not responding to input untill disconnect... Is it possible for a mavic air2 to put it into atti mode to try it out. I've had a few different drones some make u even control altitude with a throttle... Is it that bad?
I always calibrate before my first flight of the day. I also test the RTH at close range (where it’s easy to take control if there is an issue) before sending it out far.

I’m a little different. I only calibrate when I change areas by 30 miles or more. Only ATTI modes I have had happen is when flying under some bridges. Metal not a good friend to the compass 😎. Absolutely love your thumbs down comments with all your videos. Thanks for sharing Ash

My first brushless GSP drone was a Hubsan H501S. Of course I bought it on Banggood and it was shipped from China. Boy, what an exotic experience that was. I got emails in Chinese! I waited 3 weeks for it to arrive. When it was delivered I charged up the battery. Little did I know this would be the "good times" and the only memories of our time together. I have no idea if I calibrated the compass correctly or not. I had never had a GPS drone and I had no concept of the difference. It flew in my backyard to a height of 6 ft so I thought I was ready to take it to the park and fly it around. As soon as I got to the park I flew it above the trees to get a look at my neighborhood. That's the last I ever saw of it. I looked at my watch and it was just 6 hours from the time UPS rang my doorbell. That's when the madness took over...

I just experienced what i now believe is my first fly away. Only there where some real odd factors at play. At first. Without watching this video before i already do calibrate the compass before each fligth, it just seemed to make sense. So i did this time too. I actually was filming graffiti on walls which could of easily been done with a handheld camera as i wasnt flying higher than myself and actually walking along with the drone. It was a bit windy but nothing crazy, visited the beach last weekend and that was crazy but the pro 2 performed like a charm. But before i fully drift off. I was filming walls , i make a turn to go straigth towards another wall across a grass field. I start by positioning the drone in the straigth line i want it to go in and ever so gently start to push forward. Instantly i notice the drone is moving forward in a 45degree diagonal line quite fast, instantly all of a sudden above a creek which was next to me heading towards the trees on the other side of the creek. In full panic mode i pushed pause. Nothing, again and again and then it crashed into the trees. I was so lucky that it passed the branches over the water and made it acros to crash in leaves. Luckily no physical damage at all but im baffled as to how this could of happened and im still coming down from shock. Im not super experienced but experieced enough to know that this was beyond odd and i cant explain it. No signal lost no weird interferrence or nothing. Im so glad i wasnt at an higher altitude or further away or near people or that it crashed in the creek. Of course im out of my warranty period. This is my first crash ever and i hope it will be my last. I hope you can bring some sense to this and help me calm down a bit. I love my drone too much and im always carefull. I just want to understand what happenend here. Ps. I was flying a Mavic Pro 2 in position mode. Thanks from The Netherlands!

Thanks for the heads up very informative video. Before I stepped up to GPS enabled drones I had a lot of experience with toy drones like the ones you see at malls so I'm pretty confident in flying a drone that doesn't have GPS stability. But I always wondered what Attitude mode was.

I've lost mine on the 12th floor on a vacation in mexico i lost total control of it and it went steering right into the freeway where it crashed against the divider and broke both wings 😭😭😭😭 i ran into the freeway to get it and it was the worst vacation ever 😢😢😢 this video was super helpful ,as i am purchasing a new drone the mavic mini . thank you for the insights i know why it lost control due to two reasons the calibration and gps 😭😭😭. worst feeling ever not being able to bring it back in 😓

You need to preset RTH on lost connection instead of hover, also in case of strong wind, you need yo get tge drone to lower altitude and S (sport) mode to manually override and control the return, that is apart from the calibration ln everythong and update location.

My mini 2 flew away recently. Luckily it hit the side of the mountain and broke 3 propellers but I could retrieve the drone. I had absolutely no control from the remote to the drone. It just did its thing despite my efforts to fly it manually. No error indication as well. I still don't know what caused the flyaway. After replacing the propellers the thing flew as if nothing happened and I didn't calibrate anything before or after. But after watching this I might as well do calibration before every flight
I've been always referring to "flyaways" as cases where a drone actually "flies away", not just goes into ATTI. Yes, i had my Mavic (first one, the "pro") losing GPS once, far out of VLOS, and it didn't regain reception til landing and reboot. But... video reception has been rock stable, and while i am not an FPV racer guy or something, i generally have no issue orienting myself from up there, nor an issue flying in ATTI, so i've obviously brought it back and never called it a "flyaway". BTW, the times it actually tells you to recalibtate the compass are often the absolute worst to actually do so, because it "feels" something is wrong with it at the places of mild magnetic interference, exactly the spots you DON'T want to calibrate at.
Well, whether you lose the drone or not, switching into ATTI and drifting off is a fly-away. If you're able to control it and bring it back then you've recovered the drone. Terminology is subjective, others will have a different view on what a 'flyaway' is. Thanks for your comment!

I was flying my holystone hs700e today in good conditions - minimal wind, clear blue skies.
I was flying in tripod mode too.
All of a sudden my drone went berserk and flew away hard left at full speed and would not respond to any manual input from the controller.
I had to keep visual on it until it hit several trees and thankfully fell to the ground rather than being stuck up at height in a tree.
Was this 'drone fly away' or was it some other malfunction?
Many drones without the dji software don't have the compass direction or even the map like the holystone, that's why ony fly mine within line of sight

I fly my drone manually and it still did i fly away and lost it yesterday. It sucks because i could not find it after it took off. It went into the sky on its own and flew away
Here are a few things that may cause fly aways:
1) If you are flying in a new area, and you haven't checked available satellites? And your drone depends on satellite positioning to obtain GPS coordinates??? And only one satellite can be locked on with some radio stations & ham radio stations within 1/2 mile of where you decided to fly??? What do you expect other than a fly away? I don't know if you can download an app to find satellites available. I do know that you can use an app to determine if 2.5ghz is filled with cell phones. I don't know if the drones have the ability to change channels on the 2.5ghz frequency, but if they don't???? bad engineering, and this is (IMO) why you are having a loss of control.
2) If you are using 2.5ghz, and are in a densely populated area, everyone and their grandmother is on some phone using this same frequency, and you WILL have interference even though you don't want it. 5ghz is a better option, more channels.
3) Purchase a spotting scope, and place it on a tripod near where you are operating your drone. If your drone is out of sight, you won't know what way to turn the controls. You need to see the drone in order to know when it has picked up a signal again, and that you have control again. Moving altitude up and down moderately quick while looking into the spotting scope? as soon as you see the drone respond to your input, quickly send it the RETURN HOME command. If it goes in a wrong direction, press cancel over and over and over. Return to controller may be more accurate than return to home, assuming return to home uses GPS.
In conclusion:
You've got to use logic with this, and realize that a loss of remote control combined with a loss of visual line of sight (or drone is too far away to see without a spotting scope). Again, as I stated before, up and down altitude motions until you see your drone respond, as soon as you see this, CANCEL return to home and switch it to RETURN TO CONTROLLER.
Wind has been known to interfear with radio frequencies, and may also contribute to the loss of range. Loss of range due to wind, loss of sight, loss of signal due to cell phone interference, or because you are flying in an area where merchant marines have installed a microwave beam on some roof top that shoots the microwave down the river channel???? These things should be looked for with the spotting scope.

Hi today i fly my mavic mini drone upto a hight of 3m and after 2 mints it suddenly start moving towards left side and it was almost crashed.
Now i tried again and again but after take off it moves itself slightly goes down and to one side and when i fly back it to original position its again move .what is the problem plz must reply
I have the phantom 3 standard first. It had 1 problem 1 time. It started spinning and doing wild things and I was able to get it back. Now I have the air2.
I'm here because of Atti mode I experienced yesterday with my JJRC X20. I was playing in a new spot inside my housing complex and it was right beside a power grid substation so that's probably why. The first thing that happened was the DISTANCE sensor suddenly indicated 2.2km while the drone was right in front of me so it activated the auto RTH away from me to an unknown location, luckily it has not lost signal to the RC so I managed to cancel the RTH and regained control of the aircraft before it got too far away. It then behaved like a rodeo bull on a leash refusing to fly stably to which directions I pushed my joystick to. I checked the display and the status in the app is still "aircraft is normal (GPS mode)". the Joystick display was also displaying Mode 2 (GPS mode) and GPS on. so I really didn't know what was going on
I started to panic and warned a few neighbors that were enjoying their evening stroll to clear the area as I might need to crash land this drone, luckily there weren't that many people around. I did the best I could to bring it to a clearing in my complex fighting against the wind that were blowing unpredictably and after a few hesitation I push down on the left joystick down hoping for the best. It narrowly missed a water hydrant on the way down and miraculously landed a few meters from me (pretty hard but quite alright considering what was happening). Hopefully this can help some of you in the future should this happened to you.
This happened to me this evening and I had absolutely NO CONTROLS ON THE REMOTE .
This drone has a 15 minute battery and I had no idea it could even go as high as it went .
As soon as I pushed the takeoff button it zipped right off into the sky and didn’t stop . I watched it turn into a dot , and then totally disappear.
This little drone went well over 30 thousand feet and kept going ! This really concerned me because if it’s potential to get sucked into a commercial jetliner , and then of course what it may land on when the battery died.
I have video of it shortly before I lost it WAY UP in the sky .
I was just flying it inside and a bit outside . I have no idea what happened but it was almost as if something took it over as soon as I pushed the takeoff button, (which was actually from my hand instead of the ground this time ) and it went straight up and away.
I pushed every button I had and then I heard two like songs almost . One that had tones ascending , and then one that had tones descending .
What the HELL happened here ?
Shame on Me! I only did a calibration once in 1 and a half years with my Evo1. I'm going to start doing this each time I move to a different location (on a different day).

Well, yesterday i flew manual and the drone did not react at all. The drone has no gps, he was at full power going up, throttle cut did not work, even steering. Something in the area must fucked up my signal. Drone went into the air high, the wind took it with him. Still not found him back, i believe hes somewhere far far away. I also fly with heli's everyday, still trying to figure out what is happening. I know people that got this with a plane aswell, they got him back after a month miles away. If they ever find my drone back, it's ready for the junkyard anyway.
Fly aways demonstrate you're never in control but DJ is controlling the unit. My 2nd day of flying a DJI mini 3 the thing just flew away. It acceleraged up to 2000 feet and 2 miles away. Compass and GPS was calibrated; but why does the drone just take off and fly a huge distance away?
@4:11 100m up and 1000m away is beyond VLOS, so u are already flying against regulations. Most people have flyaway when they click "return to home" which probably is a compass error mixed with RTH autopilot. I have always landed manually. I cannot stress this enough - people need to be able to fly in atti mode and land their RPA themselves.
I used to calibrate compass before each flight, but nowadays I usually do not. I have been flying for a few years, and I had a compass error and nearly lost my Phantom P3P once. I did a calibration before the flight, but it still failed me. Even the most calibrated drone will fail in the event of magnetic interference, and not all have 2 compasses.
Thanks for the comment Mike, however 1000m away isn't necessarily beyond VLOS, I can see my drone at that range, some of course won't be able to. I have good eyesight, some do not. Flyaways do not occur when they click RTH because RTH won't work if the compass has failed, however RTH does of course risk does have its inherent risks in regards to not being setup correctly
@@Droning-ONIf you can see your drone, let alone be able to work out where it is facing at 1km distance you must have truly excellent vision.
But to be honest, I still have not experienced a flyaway, and I rarely, if ever calibrate the compass anymore. My P4 pro asked for an IMU calibration the other day and I did one then, but in over 50 hours of flight time, I have never had the issue. On the local DJI Facebook groups (and this is just my observation) it seems that quite a few lose it when doing a RTH.
@@mkphotofilm honestly, I can see and fully navigate my drone at 1km range, but I have been flying RC since for 30 years, so I'm more than skilled in LOS flight having flown helicopters, wings, RC planes and jets over the years. Drones lost during RTH generally are due to either the battery failing on the way back and it landing wherever it might be at that point, or it hitting an obstacle.
@@Droning-ON or they accidentally change the home point to somewhere in a forest or over the sea.
@@mkphotofilm perhaps, but highly unlikely seen as the home-point is automatically set as soon as GPS is fully acquired, changing the home-point isn't something that your average user knows how to do, or would do by accident.

Just had my first flyaway (Mavic Pro) It went into ATTI mode and decided to fly backwards...at full speed. The controller wouldn't respond...it just kept going backwards. Luckily it hit a tree and came down. But I had NO control. There was minor damage, the battery was thrown out and the rubber grommet holding the camera was dislodged from its seating. Bit afraid to put it up again next time. But will calibrate and do thorough safety check. If it does it again...well droning ....had a good run.

@@hiddemVm No, it hasn't. I think it was a combination of low light, my old phone freezing and maybe a gps signal loss. I'm still hesitant to fly at twilight. I have a new phone now and I cross my fingers but it has flown correctly ever since then.

You need to set the S (sport mode) to counter a strong wind to manually override and always make sure to preset the RTH instead of hovering in case of a lost connection

Hey, I found your video after loosing my SG907 pro drone since I was looking for some answers. I was flying it in my garden to train myself, it suddenly took off and gained 40 or 50 meters of altitude and literally flew away all by himself, not responding to any command. I was not able to get it back, but I may have prevented it if I knew to calibrate the gps more frequently, even though it doesn't explain why it didn't respond or why it gained altitude. I'll try and get more informations before buying the next one ;)

I finally bought a Spark, today was my 2nd day messing with it. I am an experienced pilot as far as flying. I have many non GPS models. I just wanted to get familiar with the Spark before sending it out too far. Yesterday I flew about 100 feet away and hit rth a few times without a problem. Today I had a problem. Keeping it fairly close again I hit rth and it wanted to land where it was, just across the street. It didn't come back on its own for some reason. Another time I hit rth and I heard it say atti mode, it went up 30 meters and froze! I couldn't control any direction or up or down, I let it hover until I heard low battery. At this point I started to panic a little. Should I let it run out of battery and let it fall from 30 meters and hope to catch it? I moved my position a little and walked away and all of a sudden the Drone took off fast going away from me northeast! I was freaking out I'm going to lose it my second day? Somehow I regained control and manually brought it back and landed it. But I wonder why it froze? Now I'm afraid to even fly it again or at least use rth function. But that's why I get GPS drones for that function. If I'm out 1/4 mile or more it's difficult to tell which way it's facing unless I look at the screen. But what happens if I lose that visual on my phone? Just bought a 5G Samsung for flying some of my GPS quads that require 5G. Dji is supposed to be all that? I'm not sure after today. Any idea why it froze and no commands from the controller were working?

It is not correct to recalibrate the compass before each flight and is not advised by DJI. If it really needs calibrating it tells you. It may be that local magnetic interference is causing the disturbance that causes the re-calibration message and if you do this in the proximity of the said interference, that really will cause a fly away when you lift off as the IMU and compass start to disagree. This topic has been much discussed on the various forums and the consensus from the experts who really understand drone physics insist that it is a completely pointless and possibly risky practice.
I'd suggest watching the video again, the advice we give is NOT to recalibrate before every single flight, just before each flight of the day. We're experts, we've been working with and flying drones for far longer than some randomers on a discussion forum. Thanks for the comment.
@@Droning-ON Recalibrating on each flying day/occasion is plain wrong. Checking the drone's orientation on the app's map (in DJI Go etc) against its real orientation is the single most important step in preventing fly-aways. Ensuring the compass is correctly orientated at T/O is vital, as that is where the IMU takes its initial reference from and any disagreement here due to magnetic interference will cause chaos as the drone moves away from the source of the interference.. See sar104's brilliant explanation of compass function - not a 'randomer' but a respected expert. No matter how long you've been doing it, you can still learn how to improve if you have an open mind!
@@localman2209 you're entitled to your opinion, but recalibrating on each flying day isn't at all plain wrong, many commercial operators do precisely this, to ensure that their expensive equipment is correctly tuned and ready for a day of professional flying. almost lost my spark yesterday ... I can't believe I got it back on the boat with 18mph winds and caught it at full speed, had a couple tiny cuts and lost a propeller. scary AF

I lost my mavic 3, 3 weeks ago in far north of Scotland, photographing stac polly.
My mistake was I flew it from the car park in the wind. However, I did not expect to lose connection with RC, but I did, and I could not get a connection back, this revolted in me frantically hitting the home button with no success, end result, drone lost in the mountains.
I have flown remote.control planes, helicopters, and dji drones from the second edition phantom all the way up to mavic 3. I have flown around this mountain before with the phantom, and mavic air 2, but this time I lost my more expensive mavic 3, the only thing I can think of that was different in the flight was using the new dji rc with screen, all other times I used my phone with the rcs

I guess I don't get it? Because I fly the drone away, why can't I fly it back? I have never used RTH or auto take off/landing. These modern drones are so easy to fly, I never felt the need to use some automated system for assistance. I came from a time when flying RC aircraft meant your fingers were always on the sticks./..

rth should still work right? anyways i always keep an eye on the direction of the drone through the app to see where its pointed so should anything happens ill know which direction the drone is ^_^
Unfortunately not, during a compass failure the drone doesn't know which way it is facing, therefore RTH will fail and the drone will end up drifting on manual control Thanks for the comment!

And remember to stay away at least 10 meters away from any metal and if possible ANY object when calibrating the compass
You can calibrate the compass next to a metal object, the drone might accept it, 8 meters up when the down vision system doesn't see the ground anymore + getting away from the magnetic object might cause this compass error midair and then RIP
Try your best to spin the drone around 360 degrees in both directions, it might recalibrate midair, at least that's what I read on some forums

Hi! Why RTH needs to use the compass if he uses GPS?
Like he mentioned in the video. GPS and compass are 2 different things. GPS tells you where you are, compass tells your where you are facing. The GPS doesn't do both. RTH uses both GPS and compass so if you have GPS only that's great. If you crash it it will tell you where your drone is but you won't actually be able to fly in the right direction. if you don't re calibrate often it might think that home is north when it's actually south. Idk if that makes sense. Hopefully it helps

Exactly. I had a fly away and got message saying magnetic interference. Land immediately. Then GPS lost. Then compass lost. Therefore RTH doesn’t work.
I was flying under a highway overpass that was about 300 meters long and my air went into atti mode. All my inputs were way exaggerated and too far away to see how close I was to the columns. Luckily I was able to guide it back to me lol

I was flying my Jjrc x5 today, she'd leave at basically normal full speed ahead no worry's right? Well out 600+ meters and turn around to come back and it's just basically sitting there.... Goes left fast, right fast and away fast but nada coming back... Well unknown to me without so much as a breeze down on the ground,there was a about a 10m/s or more headwind 115meters up, the only way it was coming back was the good ole return to home button function! In rth I suppose it has the ability to apply extra power to push on back, not for that she'd been gone. Point is always check the windage at altitude with a little test before blazing off towards whenever 🧐 if not for the quads failsafe abilities it would have stayed out there 🤦🥴.

Happened to me with mini 3 pro , forgot to remove gimbal cover , and took off , suddenly the bird flew away luckily that was inside home, it the wall and stick at wall till broken two propellers, mean while it didn't respond to my RC.

I thought atti meant if you let go of the controller that it would just fall lol, I realised it just meant if you move the thumb stick the drone moves with the momentum even if you let go rather than just remaining in its lock position.
I was thinking of getting a drone but after watching this i don't think i'll bother. I didn't know they could fly away. That would be a waste of money.

Hi there I have mavic air and worried about it just falling out of the sky. Because I had a dji phantom 3 pro and one day it just fell and smashed to bits no reason so just keep thinking the air will any advice please
Tell me what to do, when you initate a return to home and you loose 100% connectivity? AND your drone drone does not return home as you have told it to in the setup? AND the drone does not return to home when connectivity is lost? AND does not return to home when the battery begins to fail? AS if the drone lost all GPS coordinates as well as RC transmission? Thats what happened to me Sat. night. Thats what I call a "Fly away"
I had a magnetic interference and tried to land immediately then lost gps then said lost compass. Then drone went on a ride to wherever it wanted. RTH doesn’t work if you lose GPS and compass. I found out the hard way unfortunately

Instead of buying another drone to practice ATTI mode, you could practice flying indoors. Also, you can tape over your sensors and force ATTI on a DJI drone. It's very good experience to learn to fly in ATTI mode - you really have to fly the craft rather than point and shoot.
I wouldn't recommend that at all, taping over sensors and flying indoors will result in dangerous flying by most consumers, and crashes. Buying a non-GPS drone and flying it outdoors is a far better option. Thanks for the comment!
I had a drone go ATTI on me, over water, somehow I kind of figured out how to keep it in a general area but couldn't get it to fly back to me. I kept fighting the wind and keeping it in a spot where it wouldn't hit a tree. Then GPS kicked back in. Phew.

Always calibrate your compass if you're flying in different locations, if you're flying in the same spot then the calibration is unessessary.
nice! i still fly some toy drones and tinywhoops, and i fly my old phantom 2 all the time in atti cause it is so much fun! luckly i never got in an flyaway with my mavic pro😃
Haha coincidently my first compass-failure was with the original Phantom 3 Professional, nothing similar since so fingers crossed the tech has evolved and improved!
DroningON i do think it is improving as dji now put 1 compass instead of 2 in the mavic air 2, there must be a reason for that, and that's probably because it's getting better

My last flyaway was when my Phantom 2 was attacked by a swarm of bees. The result was a shut-down and it fell out of the sky. Fortunately landed in thick grass and not badly damaged (but was covered in bee bits).
