I watched some interviews with Katharine where she talks about Gingersnaps and she was very candid it was her first acting project she worked on where she was on her own without her mom's supervision. She said she still has an aversion to prosthetics to this day and wishes she knew more about that process prior to so she could've prepared. She talked about how they were 18 hour days shooting and she was sleep deprived, high off alcohol based paints, and living off junk food. And the scene where she walks down the hallway she was concussed during and throwing up between takes. She also had to go on an iv and bedrest after filming so it sounds like some traumatic things did happen but she's very proud of the movie.
It should be illegal to treat actresses/actors like this, specially if they are minors. And she was very over sexualised, that disgusted me, poor child.😢 I hope Emily Perkins was okay... Poor girls.
Did anyone else see they had a Ginger Snaps reunion in the most random place ever?? Katherine and Emily played the “evil step sisters” in a Cinderella Story sequel.
There was a documentary about the making of IT where Elizabeth Perkins is talking about the boys teasing her about THAT SCENE from the book, and it's just interesting to hear her describe how that situation went down/made her feel vs the male actors for this movie minding themselves better.
Ginger Snaps has got to be one of my favourite Werewolf movies ever made, and I think the one the best performance in both movies in my eyes is Emily Perkins. She is one of my favourite Actresses ever.
Maybe it’s because it was filmed in Canada or because Emily Perkins there but this movie feels like a really dark episode of “Are you afraid of the dark?”… which is pretty dope :)
3 was such a different creative direction (especially after 2's open ending) that I've always wondered if they just took a pre-existing spec period horror werewolf script with some coincidental similarities and turned it into a "prequel."
My god, this was such a powerful watch. It made me so happy to see the trauma of female puberty utilized as horror. Also one of the only films I’ve ever seen to show menstrual blood on screen.
Fun fact: Katharine Isabelle said in an interview that when she was dressed in her words as a “slutty werewolf” she couldn’t see very well with the contacts and she was rushing to one of the white vans to get to set and said,”GO GO GO!” Only to realize she had gotten into the wrong van and it belonged to a soccer mom and her three kids were in the back and all they did was scream after 5 seconds of screaming she eventually realized that she could get out and she said they drove away and she should still hear screaming a kilometer away.😭
Not sure why or how, but I remember seeing this movie twice on TV, each time my family and I visited my cousins in Canada. I think I was 11 , and that movie scarred me from going into unfinished basements for life. Rewatching it now, I could relate so much to my sister and I going to high school and being labeled the quiet art freaks. It’s definitely one of my favourite coming of age stories
I had heard of this movie and I know you did a watch along of this not too long ago but I had never knew that it was actually a werewolf movie. I also didn't know Emily Perkins and Katherine Isabelle were in this as I've seen them in other projects, especially Emily Perkins. So I really enjoyed as everything was completely new to me and honestly I love when there's a movie or franchise that I've never really watched or heard of and I get basically all the information on it. Plus the behind the scenes stuff, which I always really love! So thanks Kylie for another amazing deep dive!
I've been watching your channel for years now, I think I found you in 2018 and ill not see anything for a while from you but every time I do, you reignite my love of horror and I go on some kind of movie bender. thank you for that girly🖤
Didn't expect to see you do a deep dive on this one, but I'm glad you did! This really made me wanna go back and rewatch the movie. I actually met Katherine Isabelle once and she was the nicest person, super funny too
I grew up about an hour outside Toronto and was 15 when this film came out. It was briefly being screened in my local theatre, but I wasn't allowed to go see it. I got a job at Blockbuster Video that summer and it was one of the first films I rented (since employees got to take home r-rated films despite their age). To call it eye-opening as a teenage boy would be an understatement. I think I was much like Katherine Isabelle, in that I was too young to get every layer of what was being presented, but the general message definitely made it through. It's been one of my favourite horror films ever since.
I always love your deep dives. Truly enjoyed the watch along with you of this film. It’s nice to find gems that may have got away from us. I just wanted to make one distinction. As with all films there are the modern day versions and there are the classics. If we didn’t have the classics I feel that today’s versions would have no reference as to how far we have come in film making. So with Ginger Snaps I would call it a modern day werewolf masterpiece because it took the subject of werewolf’s and gave us a film that this younger generation can enjoy. Putting a new spin on it. No full moon, just a continuous progression. My hope is the people would still go back to the classics that I grew up with and enjoy that movie and the time that it was put out. 👍🙂
Thank you so much for doing this deep dive. I agree, Ginger Snaps is the best werewolf movie. It's one of my favorite horror films. It got me started collecting physical media. I rented it and had to own it. I'll definitely be rewatching this deep dive a few times.
I love it how John Fawcett says that werewolf movies are cheesy and there is this scene where Brigitte watches such a film and is just completely annoyed by it. XD This film has so much to offer but you don't see it the first time you watch it :)
Some horror fans recommended me to Ginger Snaps. And it’s very different from the werewolf movies I’ve seen since An American Werewolf In Paris and Blood & Chocolate didn’t hold up to it. All three Ginger films were well crafted. Did like the prequel more of the girls’ past history.
I remember seeing this title and wondering what gingerbread cookies had to do with horror LOL I honestly thought it was a scary holiday film. When I finally got around to watching it I felt like such a fool for waiting so long. All three movies are favorites of mine now.
I loved this deep dive. I caught on to the themes in this movie pretty quickly. I love Ginger Snaps(and the sequels). I do have to admit I don't think it's the best werewolf movie. If I had to list my 3 all-time favorite werewolf movies it would be The Howling( 1981 original) and Ginger Snaps & An American Werewolf In London tied for second. The Howling just barely beats the other two. Maybe you could do a deep dive on The Howling. And if you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.
Kylie, another great video. I just watched Ginger Snaps just over a week ago. It's very good. The direction is very good. The acting too. Good and interesting script too. Oh, it was, of course, filmed in my neck of the woods, Canada. Canada is a lot like America (we're heavily influenced by America) but a bit more sane -- as we've public health care and a more regimented capitalism. Anyway, Kylie, keep up the wonderful work.
I remember the first time I watched Ginger Snaps and was completely blown away by how good it was! Being a huge fan of the werewolf genre, most of them are kinda disappointing in one way or another, but GS is solid, apart from the wig. I'm still biased towards AAWL, I do completely agree that GS is a far deeper and engrossing story experience, but I do think that AAWL is intentionally supposed to be a more superficial 'creature-feature' roller-coaster. Your feet barely get to touch the ground before one of the main characters has been savaged and the other begins his descent seemingly into madness, before wolfing out a couple of times, "David. I love you.", and the film is over. It feels like a much shorter film than its actual runtime, which by today's standards is actually fairly short at just over 1hr 33m excluding credits. GS is like maybe 15 minutes longer, but the story feels much more well-rounded and explored before the end. The budget on AAWL went on the SFX and stunts, and it shows. GS with around a quarter of the budget, accounting for inflation, still does an amazing job with the SFX, but the focus is way more on the character development. Being from the UK and London, and growing up there during the 80's, and being male probably also has something to do with AAWL being my favourite. But I'd gladly recommend either of them to someone wanting to watch the best werewolf movie. I find it hard to recommend the sequels. GS 2&3 are nowhere near as good as the first, but they're worth a watch if you're a big GS fan. An American Werewolf in Paris is just disappointing and I'm so Glad the Max Landis remake didn't happen for numerous reasons! Mostly because I think he sucks!
Gettin’ over a cold, attending the latest cult meeting seems like a great way to celebrate my health returning. Anyway, yet another excellent deep dive, Kylie, I expect nothing less from you. I’ll have to give Ginger Snaps a look-see. I’ve never heard of it, which is a real shame, because it sounds like a one of a kind werewolf film. Ah, on a side note, I know that I promised I’d make a Ghostface sculpture for you (offering to the cult leader) and that should be coming soon. Sorry it’s been taking so long, I run out of black clay easily.😅
How did this video become therapy for me? I legit had an “ah-ha” moment about why I had my kleptophase into middle school. Damn consumerism!!!! Loved this one, Kylie 💜💜💜 - Lauren
I've never been a horror STAN, but I can definitely enjoy a well-made horror story. From the moment I first watched it, Ginger Snaps has been my absolute favourite. I still watch it every Halloween ❤ I enjoyed this deep dive into a criminally under-apprecated film!
This video makes me want to watch the movie again. I've seen it once before and thought it was good, but not particularly great. After your analysis, I think that a rewatch will help so much of what the film is saying jump out to me more, especially viewing it in such a heavy female gaze.
I love all three Ginger Snaps films. I liked 2 and 3 way back when, so I rewatched those two very recently and I love all three now. I rewatched 1 in October. All three get stronger on rewatches.
Have you watched Ginger Snaps 3? It's definitely different from the first two and is a prequel to them. But I personally liked it, I thought it was interesting. You should check it out.
Loved this movie it's one of my fave horror films as well. One movie that comes to mind that came out more recently is one called "Blue My Mind" 2017 which has a similar premise except the girl in the film turns into a mermaid not a werewolf/lycanthrope.
Ginger Snaps is a great movie and very different than your typical werewolf movie but I can't say it's the best one because it's in a very tough genre to compete in with such movies as The Howling and Underworld etc
One of the best movies of all time werewolf horror or otherwise. The point where ginger snaps is epic ! It’s so visceral you can feel it to your core . I rewatch this movie every year around my bday . It’s in my top 5 movies of all time . The other two are brilliant as well .
ginger snaps is a ripper. ahead of its time, no surprise there was so much friction to get it made. all the best movies are like that!! john landis had to go out of pocket for american werewolf in london, and that was a ripper, too. the werewolf month parallels are real! it would be funny if it wasn't such a bummer-- it's wild how often hollywood casts aside horror bc they don't take it seriously. and yet it can be such an incredible vehicle for remarkably powerful storytelling. also so glad karen walton was involved. sounds like she took a great idea and made it a great movie. rad! screenwriters and horror, historically underappreciated! :') thanks for linking your sources, that's dope! more people should do that on youtube. especially 'video essayists' lol.

Great deep dive, love the facts you get for these.. I would also add Teeth (2007) to your list of movies maybe inspired by Ginger Snaps, a coming of age and sexuality story in suburbia involving a vagina dentata, another great movie
I Like An American Werewolf in London (1981), it's a solid film, but my Top 3 favorite Werewolf films are 1.Dog Soldiers (2002) 2.Ginger Snaps (2000) 3.The Company of Wolves (1984)
Watched this the other night.. I can finally say I've seen it from beginning to end lol.. I really wanted to watch a 2000 time capsule that I've never seen and figured why not since it was fresh in my mind.. I liked it and don't really have anything bad to say.. my only beef was that the 3rd act fell off slightly for me and maybe it's 10-15 minutes too long and a tight 90 minutes could've helped, but I'm just nitpicking because it's overall good stuff.. The film has a lot going for it.. great vibes.. Emily Perkins MVP, she kinda carried it, she was really good.. I'm not breaking any news, but her different outfits are so on point, whoever picked her wardrobe knows what's up.. I've seen parts of the film over the years so I knew her aesthetic going into it, but I loved her outfits so much, bring that shit back! She looked and acted exactly like what a regular outcast/goth teen looked and acted like at that time, she definitely "understood the assignment" as the younger folks like to say lol.. And the wig didn't bother me at all, kinda loved it tbh and it was definitely necessary for the character of Brigitte.. I really liked her in this film, it sucks she didn't do many films.. I just noticed she's in Prozac Nation but I don't remember ever noticing her in it, but I was never looking for her, it has to be a very small part either way.. and I saw Juno when it came out but never since, don't remember much about it, who knows how much she's in it.. and it's been a minute since I've seen the IT miniseries.. I'll probably eventually check out the sequel since they're in it, but I kinda liked the ending and it probably didn't need a sequel imo..
just watched ginger snaps and couldn’t decide how i felt about the ending but i loved your take and ive decided i really like the ending! if you enjoy horror concerning womanhood, you should watch ‘Clock’ starring Diana Agron. so, so impactful to me as someone who has an IUD and no kids, but may want some some day.
“They’re a subversive pair, just let her have short hair!” Hahaha love it when haunted hippie spots fire bars! It’s crazy cuz I didn’t even know she was wearing a wig! Guess I’m not as good at spotting bad wigs as I thought lol Love hearing Emily Perkins in all her interviews. She really gets it. Snaps for her! And snaps for all the women involved. Those stunts sound crazy and all the more empowering that this film was made for women by women. Also love the insight you provided on how the werewolf metaphor is perfect for the strifes of women. Plus the mundanity and bodily functions of women, while normal, seem to be perfect vessels for body horror! No wonder they were influence by cronenberg! Keeping it Canadian! Hahaha Thank you again for this howling deep dive. not that it was a deep dive of the howling (1981) hahaha but it’s just so great we’re deep in your werewolf era! Also love the turnaround time since we just had a watch along of this amazing werewolf film and we now got the deep dive! You’re the best dark princess of horror a slimy little maggot could ask for! Also, tbh, I could relate to the director in that I always had a thing for goth girls but they too never gave me the time of day lol
I'm going to have to eventually watch this one from beginning to end.. any film from the year 2000 is in my wheelhouse and has potential.. kinda surprised I never committed to watching it because it has always had a cult following for as long as I can remember..
Great flick topped only by An American Werewolf in London and the mostly unknown Dog Soldiers. Judged on how scary the werewolf is. If you missed Dog Soldiers it's a must watch. It's got cheese throughout but the creature fx have a terrifying look and the cheese is not egregious and it's an acceptable amount with great humor
I don't remember seen this movie and another horror movie from 2000 I remember seen is Hollow Man (2000), parents rented the VHS, which is old-school video-tape before DVD's. If you call Ginger Snaps (2000) best werewolf movie, I must see it.
Oh man it's been years since I've seen that movie. It really set the stage for the genre in the 2000s. Katharine Isabelle is a very underrated actress. Have you seen American Mary? She's in that too.
This is the first horror movie Baby Franni was exposed to at the ripe age of 3 years old and now I’m bisexual… Do with that information what you will. (p.s. god I love movies!)

One of the best Werewolf movies ever 😃😃😀😀 Gingersnaps are great cookies as well 🤗🤗🤗
My favorite werewolf movie❤
Yes, GS is so wondeful made and no other movie is so deep actually :P
Now I rly wanna see you talking about Raw
Another great video our mother of darkness!❤
“They’re a subversive pair, just let her have short hair!” Hahaha love it when haunted hippie spots fire bars! It’s crazy cuz I didn’t even know she was wearing a wig! Guess I’m not as good at spotting bad wigs as I thought lol
Love hearing Emily Perkins in all her interviews.
Hahaha
Thank you again for this howling deep dive. not that it was a deep dive of the howling (1981) hahaha but it’s just so great we’re deep in your werewolf era!
Emily Perkins is now at the top of my list for people I want to interview/have star in my movies lol
proto jennifer’s body
I'm going to have to eventually watch this one from beginning to end.. any film from the year 2000 is in my wheelhouse and has potential.. kinda surprised I never committed to watching it because it has always had a cult following for as long as I can remember..
omg give it a go!
@@HauntedHippie I definitely will.. I didn't really watch this vid just to avoid spoilers.. I've seen parts of it over the years on TV..
Omg why stop? Please make this an hour longer if you have to. You’re research is soo informative
No but it's been on my list for ages haha
Yes my klepto phase was also makeup!
Would love to hear your thoughts on Blair Witch Project
This is the first horror movie Baby Franni was exposed to at the ripe age of 3 years old and now I’m bisexual… Do with that information what you will. (p.s. god I love movies!)
that tracks!!
Yes! This has long been a fave of mine
yesss i love the 3rd more than the second
