Consider Roger's age... I've got a 1977 bootleg "wish the animals were here" and he could sing this song quite enough good... far away from Harper, though
Yeah, he is a great songwriter, but songs like Have a Cigar, Wish You Were Here, Welcome To The Machine, Time and Money wouldn't have broken through as successful songs if Waters had assumed the role of lead singer.
I don't mind Harper's vocal, but I love the "alternate" version I've heard with Roger singing high and Gilmour singing low, and think that's what they should have done with it.
It is a little loud, but yeah, it is, especially since there’s the added factors of… -He’s getting up there in age. & -He’s clearly not used to singing in that high of a pitch (as he stated, he’d need to do vocal exercises). So, it is pretty decent.
He also claims he sung it live on the previous tour. Not true. He sung it once live. Probably in a studio at the start of the tour. The rest of the time, he mimed along to this recorded version on stage.
Pretty sad hearing him say “I never liked it…” it was a huge song for them and carried their career along with the help of Roy. He was never paid correctly for that.
It is so good to see him offstage in his more human, but equally sublime form... Roger can always finds a way to reach people's hearts with his truthfulness. Thanks for this video🌹
Bro sounds awesome here. Can really tell from these comments a lot of people haven't listened to live versions from the 70s of this song. Roger freaking kills it, specially during the 77 tour.
You don't see any videos of this song out there being played live because Roy Harper sang it. RW in this interview should have acknowledged that and RH should have been properly compensated for stepping in to do what RW couldn't do and it becoming a hit song.
The full interview about this is now on YT.. Roy said Roger asked him what he wanted to sing it, and.Roy settled for something or other. He said "money" wasn't that important anyway.
I'll defend Waters as both a thematic and songwriting genius - the likes of which do not come around often. but man, is he an arrogant SOB! Still love him though.
@@my3dviewsand he really was only able to sing it by himself in the original key in the 80s, and just barely in the Dark Side Of The Moon tour where he had to lip sync it and now he’s even older so of course he can’t sing it there.
@@elijahmgibbs if you look up there's an interview with Roy Harper where he says Waters couldn't hit the high notes.. and the track would be out of step with the rest of the album if they tuned it down. The song was originally intended for Waters, but they weren't happy with the studio takes at the time. Waters did it live in 1975 with Gilmour and Wright on backing vocals before the track was recorded in the studio. Waters also sung it live in 1977 (Gilmour and Wright on backing vocals) which I'd personally would consider as the best version of the song, it has the vulnerability that he's talking about here and it sound much "rawer" ua-cam.com/video/eiSnAkdVycg/v-deo.htmlsi=gGpR0GynEFvQPd_E

Where can i listen to roger and gilmour doing that¿?
@SpreekkPlay I don't think I can post a link, but just search " Have a cigar alternate version."

too high, sounds strained

I enjoyed this.
Sounds amazing. Would love to hear actual first demo. He wrote the whole song
It totally makes sense that someone else sings this song, as It is about a record producer explaining the business to the band members.

He is Pink Floyd
But "Pink" worked hard for what he earned. His retirement plan is "(out of this world)😊
Gotta love him Best but David was a beautiful Boy! 💜👂

master!
This could be easily an outro conversation in a Floyd song.
I can't be the only one who bursted out laughing when he started singing
Sounds fantastic, what a legend
Roy was right, too high for Mr Waters
This is part of the reason why Pink Floyd was resistant to having RWs recent offerings on their channel. Jesus
❤
There is power. There will be a choir and an orchestra and it will be brilliant❤

It wasn't Gilmour or Waters. It was Roy Harper.
Roy Harper’s singing in this song sounds like Gilmour’s because of the iconic smooth, tenor voice that Gilmour normally uses for many of the songs
