    Can someone PLEASE upload this whole movie! This is one of the top Fred Astaire movies that I want to watch! Seriously, Fred's acting in this movie is SOOOOOO good! If the people back then weren't so used to Fred's typecast characters, he would be nominated for a Academy Award for both this, his role in Daddy Long Legs and in On The Beach!

    This just reinforces my childhood infatuation with Joan Leslie. She had a beauty that captivated every scene she was ever in.

    This movie; like many during WWII; boosted morale to those who's loved ones were in harms way. 1943 was a tough and tragic year for all our servicemen -- especially in the air over Fortress Europe. Films and songs such as this one, should never be allowed to fade into obscurity. Eternal thanks Joan Leslie and Fred Astaire.

    Earlier in the movie the song is sweetly sung by Joan, and it's a good set because the band's instruments all light up!

    I kicked myself all over the place for missing out on a rare appearance by Leslie at a refurbished theatre in nearby Palo Alto while living in San Jose. The scion of the prominent Packard family refurbished an old theatre on University Avenue in Palo Alto and scheduled Leslie as one of its speakers. The makeover was well done as only the Packards can do.

    Woefully underrated movie. Released with no fanfare during the early years of the war. captures war-time U.S. faithfully. Joan Leslie a treasure.

    I've read that Joan was only about 18 when this film was made during WWll. She appeared on the vaudville stage as a very young girl with her family. Perhaps that's why she was so good at projecting a more mature image in films when needed. (I also read that Fred wasn't too happy about the age difference....
    Joan being mature 18 and Fred being a young 45).

      And with good reason. The age difference looked ridiculous, but no more so than in Royal Wedding with Jane Powell. Then there was Daddy Long Legs with Leslie Caron....even more so. Something that was always going to happen with somebody whose talent outshone any other feature.

    Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and many other composers all wanted Mr. Astaire to sing his songs. He wasn't a fantastic singer, but he had great delivery.

    According to Wikipedia, Sally Sweetland actually did the singing and it was dubbed in for Ms Leslie in this and several other movies.

    Joan has a beautiful voice. It's unreal the way Hollywood producers think.

    • @moleskincrusher1

      Not her voice; it was dubbed.

      @@moleskincrusher1Why do you think so?

    • @petertaylor3600
      @petertaylor3600 Рік тому

      @@streethassle_ No, where they could sing, they did. Think of the money saved! Ava Gardner did her own singing in Show Boat for the same reason. Only if they had a voice like a bullfrog was it dubbed. Marnie Nixon did the voiceover for actresses like Deborah Kerr.

    • @streethassle_

      @@petertaylor3600 The question bothering me for a long time is in which movies did she sing and in which was she dubbed? Wikipedia says that her voice was dubbed in almost all of the movies, but that would be strange because Joan had a beautiful voice and I see no reason to dub her. Besides, she sang just a little bit in many scenes, and what's the point of dubbing just a few words? It is a pity that no one asked Joan about this in an interview with her.

    • @TedWms521
      @TedWms521 Рік тому

      @@streethassle_ Both the whole song and the playful extract were dubbed by Sally Sweetland. Yet Joan Leslie was a singer and in fact did some of her own singing in My Shining Hour. .

    Great song and great dialogue, but I have to wonder if, today, this would be considered harassment. It seems like it's on the borderline.
