This game has a similar playstyle to the "Ogre Battle" series (64 and March of the Black Queen, not Tactics). They hardly make any of these style games so I'm VERY excited about this getting released.
Symphony of War is a good PC-indie to try, though that's turn based with you building squadrons.
its literally the same system as ogre battle which is awesome
Altus doing what Square Don't.
Vanillaware's artistic vision for their games has always been top notch. My only complaint is that it's not coming out for PC(as of yet, who knows maybe it'll get a port later?).
Same sentiment here, but i waiting for the PC version. but damn how much i want to play it now.
Vanillaware: I will create my own Ogre Battle with awesome food and furries!
And big woman! BIG! WOMAN!
Also Vanillaware: I will not release my games on PC, because I hate money! I will release them on Xbox though lol.
@@hafirenggayuda And jiggly ladies!!
@@Yannaro_Kim I think their refering to Amalia who is a FUCKING Giant Dommy Mommy! You'll know the moment you see her! :)
But yeah any women with Boobs WILL have Jiggle Physics! It's a Vanillaware game after all! And I STILL love it I do love how you get many females who are PROPERLY armored so you only see BOOBY off of those lightly armored! Plus I do like how Yahna didn't go Old Woman to CHILD and stopped at Teen! That's something NEW since lollibaba is a thing with the Japanese! Guess that one anim about the grandparents de-aging to when they were Teenagers/young adults had that effect! Never got why wanting to be YOUNG, every old woman goes as far as being a LITERAL child again, and then dress inapproachably! At least Yahna admits she IS taking advantage of getting her youth and "looks" back means she's going to enjoy being attractive to the GAZE, and easy movement likely because her bones aren't BRITTLE and she's at an age where it's not creepy and PROPER appearance (And I like how it's clear the spell only works ONCE and you WILL lose your magic that you will NEVER get another cast, so it's best use as a LAST RESORT affair)
And yeah Vanillaware was the same when people wanted the CLASSIC beat em up of Capcom's Dungeons & Dragons arcade games! Vanillaware was like "Yeah lets hire the people who made those games and make are own" And that's how DRAGON'S CROWN was born!
And then as you said the got the people who made Ogre Battle and were like "Let's make our own Ogre Battle" and again like Dragon's Crown, it was awesome! This is why I've stayed loyal to Vanillaware! They give good fanservice (of BOTH genders) without a CARE about the Cancel culture Twitter idiots who need to touch grass AND deliver some GREAT story and characters! It's amazing how that works when you TRY instead of sacrificing ONE for the other for some reason (Not that a story idea is SUPREME, after all the game is called UNICORN OVERLORD! Even though a Unicorn IS involved and taking back the Continent WOULD make Alain an "Overlord" Wonder how Unicorn Overlord 2 will look! Can't wait! But I also wonder what OLD legend that the "game industry SUITS" kill off saying "no one wants this" that Vanillaware will bring back next!
@@paulman34340 I said "and" meaning also
I love when you guys get these slower moments in gaming so that you can try stuff that might be out of your comfort zone or might be a kind of game you don't play often like anime style games. I can't wait for this game and I love the video.
@phantomxero1x447 I'm well aware he's not going to review it, and everyone is entitled to there taste. It's completely fine he doesn't usually vibe with anime games.
Odin Sphere, Princess Crown, dragons crown, muramasa, 13 sentinels...Vanillaware's games definitely something to enjoy. Collectors edition even has something of a board game/ card game.
Grand knights or grand knights history exist only in clips.
I hope they make some rereleases of those so they dont end up lost in playstation limbo forever.
Agreed, their games have always been beautiful, unfortunately it isnt on PC so i wont be able to enjoy them
The best part? The card game is actually well done. There's a good mix of balance where players can try to counter other players' hand-building strategies, without having too many counters & making it a slog like Unstable Unicorns. It's weirder how Unstable Unicorns has a relatively stable gameplay style where players can easily disrupt other players, forcing the game into a deadlock where everyone just wants the game to end & go to the toilet or something.
Wasn't expecting to see Aj play a Vanillaware game. Still hoping Muramasa The Demon Blade gets a remastered
Shovelware would have been a better name for this company 😂
@@Cenot4phoh look a mythical troll. Let’s be sure to not feed it.
Im hoping for a rerelease of muramasa and odin sphere for so long. I dont have and dont intent on having a playstation besides 2. Will i ever be able to play Odin Leifthrasir or Dragons Crown?
@phantomxero1x447 so like pretty much like ever YTer who makes any video…
It technically did, only for the VITA though... i didn't know about its release until I went down the Vanillaware release rabbit hole
13 sentinels aegis rim was an hidden gem and I can't wait for this one too.
Horribly underappreciated game. The people I've spoke to that played it loved it. The people I've asked if they've played it but haven't even heard of it is... A quantity I really don't like to acknowledge lol.
I'm playing through it right now. I'm actually only playing it because of Unicorn Overlord.
I had tried 13 Sentinels a while back, and was really turned off by the massive amount of basically cutscenes disguised as gameplay. I was also really turned off by the clearly Space Invaders inspired art direction for the battles. So I put maybe an hour or so into it, and then never looked back. Until now lol.
Unicorn Overlord was so good that I decided that I owed it to myself to give 13 Sentinels another try. Several hours in, and I can definitely agree that it's a hidden gem. It's very familiar buy very different in both gameplay and story. I'd still have preferred actual beautiful hand-drawn art for the battles like the rest of the game has, but oh well. 😂
Absolutely
Just beat it two nights ago and had a great time playing. Such an interesting story and liked all the characters. Worth playing.
@@winghong3 yeah, I guess. As much as I did like it on my second attempt at it, there just isn't enough gameplay for my liking. The "adventure" part, which as you say is a visual novel, is a slog for me, even with how good the story is. I'd honestly rather just be watching a movie.
The combat sequences themselves, as I already mentioned, are a letdown for me personally. They aren't bad at all. It's just that I would have genuinely preferred more traditional art (like the fantastic art used elsewhere in game) to represent the Sentinels and Kaiju. The Space Invaders look is OK, but I just can't get I to the battles the way that I'd like. I'm just shooting at a bunch of circles. And for a hardcore strategy/tactics gamer like myself, I've found most of the fights surprisingly short. Granted, I'm only about 5 hours in, so they could get lengthier, but with the art style, I'm not sure that it matters lol.
I gave it a second chance. I'm glad that I did. I can give an honest opinion of it, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone who prefers story to gameplay. It's just not quite for me. Now that UO is just two days away, I'm probably all but done with 13 Sentinels. But again, at least I can recommend it for players who enjoy these types of visual novels with some gameplay elements.
I played this Demo and holy crap is it good. I do have nostalgia for Ogre Battle so that may be screwing with my objectivity 😏
That’s ok buddy
Dude I miss Ogre Battle.
@@DragonHeart613 yeah me too. The Reborn thing just wasn’t the same 🫤
Yeah it’s surprisingly good like damn I’m impressed
Na I never played a tactics game before and I think it's amazing.
Just like Suicide Squad: KTJL and Skull and Bones, Unicorn Overlord also took 10 years to develop. But unlike those two failures this one has been received far more favorably so far.
truely a AAAA game
The only reason it's taken 10 years is because Vanillaware was working on other products at the same time.
This game wasn't in development hell like Skull and Bones.
@@ruick78😂
It took 10 years to make that pile of 2d shit? It's literally just auto battler 2.0
@@PrayForDeath90 There's nothing wrong with it being an auto battler. Ogre Battle (which this series draws it's main inspiration from), Fire Emblem, and Advance Wars all have auto battle systems. A lot of people like these games for the depth of unit and squad customization.
I get not liking something, but there's no need to shit on an entire genre when it simply isn't for you.
I know AJ and the gang are just playing this for the sponsor and most likely won’t actually be playing this outside of this video, but I still hope this brings more interested people to this game. Vanillaware games are always slept on outside of game awards shows and other industries, so the more attention the better.
I mean, the video brought me in. I haven't played a tactics game since Advance Wars, and this art style is incredible. I never heard of Vanillaware before this.
Na auto battles 😂😂 thats shit
23:15 Joe, what you failed to grasp here is that the Thief can dodge *everything* the enemy can throw at him in this stage and should be the frontliner instead of Josef here.
ajs be playing more anime games these days because western AAA industry is a total mess right now
the music gameplay and voice acting surprised me i am psyched to sink some serious hours into this one that loop is addictive
I’m so excited to play this game! The demo was fun and I’m glad it’s being spread around through word of mouth!
i love the look of the game.. kinda looks like Golden Sun
I miss Golden Sun
You guys playing this game is surprising to say the least. I played the demo twice already and I really enjoy it. Can’t wait to the release.
Something on the internet is getting hype? Gotta chase that clout.
Can't wait for him to be a huge fan.
The demo lasts for 7 hours, so you can get pretty far (up to rescuing a MC)
If you do in preparation of the full game. I recommend speed running through the cut scenes on your 2nd/3rd play through.
Playing the demo made me purchase after the first hour, I'm glad it was 5 hours cuz it gave such a good impression.
Wow joe thanks for checking it out after i commented it
13 Sentinels was one of the best games I played of the PS4 generation, I highly recommend that too and going in as blind as possible. Vanillaware is pretty amazing.
I've been insanely excited about this one.
I was getting huge odin sphere vibes when seeing this and didn't even know it was made by vanillaware but the level of charm in the art and animations reminded me of them. I have only played 13 sentinels, Odin sphere and long time ago dragons crown but I swear the level of talent they have when making games is insane and the storylines are very enjoyable to read.
Holy Crap, this is a very pleasant surprise. Joe playing Unicorn Overlord, the newest JRPG from cult favorite developer Vanillaware (Dragon's Crown, Odin Sphere, Grim Grimoire)? Yes please. Wonder if Joe will be able to squeeze in a review of Unicorn Overlord in between Skull & Bones and hopefully Final Fantasy VII Rebirth🤞🤞
hes only playing it because atlus is paying him man
@@sxnsesyeah. Sounds like the commenter you are responding to is a shill also
@@Laudable88yeah it’s like they took part of it from Vanillaware’s Wikipedia summary LOL
@@flataffect I actually played those games just so you know. I own both the original version of Dragon's Crown for PS3 & the PS4 enhanced version Dragon's Crown Pro plus Odin Sphere on PS2. Don't know where you get accusing a total stranger of not playing the games he's talking about.
@@sxnses How do you even know Atlus is paying Joe? Maybe they sent Joe a copy of the game or an early build just so Joe could show the game off. Alot of game companies do that with countless UA-camrs & Twitch streamers.
Happy you played this I've always loved Vanillaware's games
Cant wait to see joe, other joe and alex cosplaying ff7 rebirth😂😂😂
Dear god the jiggling
5:16 jiggle physics on point
Spiritual successor to Ogre Battle. I love this.
A modern Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen style game from Atlus? Sign me the heck up!
I really like the 2.5d artstyle they pulled off with this game with all the vibrant animations
A game where men are strong and women are hot, 2024 still has a chance
It's Asian games and asian devs, to be expected. What has fall off is the Western world
Made my day seeing Joe was checking out Unicorn Overlord. Vanillaware are incredible
The only other experience I have with Vanillaware is 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and that was a game I went into unsure if I'd like it, and absolutely adored it. Fantastic game and I highly recommend it as well.
Wow, joe playing this. I’m super excited for this game. Seems like a very interesting story! Protect Scarlett at all cost!
I will be picking this up!
wow thank you guys for uploading i would never know about this one, very non standard game here, my body is ready lol.
Ogre battle for the SNES and Nintendo 64 I have been waiting for a game like this for 24 years.
The only problem is that it is not on pc.
I'll give it a shot. Looks good.
Ive been a fan of Vallinaware for years and loved each title they release. This however, blows my freaking mind just from the demo
What a surprise to see this game on your channel. The demo is amazing. I hope my Monarch Edition arrives this week. 😊
the game surprising ammount of depth and tactics despite it being a autobattler styled game, but also is very casual friendly if you so choose
I would love to see them play the whole game a lot. I'm already addicted to this demo but there is a lot of stuff that isn't teacher until the end of the demo so a lot if people might miss it and thing the systems are way deeper than you think at first.
Vanillaware are legends. They make the best games. I just wish they were not Nintendo exclusive. I'd buy a PC port.
Thankfully this is on Playstation and Xbox too, but sadly no PC.
Man!
This game reminds me of Saga Frontier so much!😊
Got it pre order a month ago for switch. Cant wait to play it.
Ok 100% gonna buy that one, I already knew about it but had kinda forgotten that its coming out
I was sold when I saw them giggle physics on Scarlett 😂
🤓
This game is VERY good! Vanillaware never fails to deliver. Another banger for sure!
Vanillaware are behind Dragon's Crown and even Odin's Spehere, then Atlus are the producers I believe of the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei series'. For me I played the Demo until the demo finished. I'm biting my nails as we get closer to release for Unicorn Overlord.
Yes please more prince oj “banging blades”
So happy Atlus is back to making Ogre Battle style games.
Especially with Vanillaware teaming up with them. Every game they've done together has been a hit.
Bur?
Just getting back to my childhood with Ogre Battle likeness, music and even some easter eggs?
Amazing.
SquareEnix isn't doing anything with the Ogre Battle rights since buying them off Atlus back in 2005. Outside of the Tactics Ogre remaster.
Oh and Angry Joe?
You can control units directly.
Set up their tactics via character edit. You can set each units tactics to who they should attack or target. Guard. Heal. Ect.
Highly detailed.
Glad you all tried the demo out! I can't wait for this one!
I'd love more of this!!
Very reminiscent of Ogre Battle on the SNES. I love it.
I was initially skeptical about the auto-combat because I tend to be a bigger fan of games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre. But after a couple hours into the game, I started to realize just how deep and complex the unit formation mechanic is. I went from "meh, I'll give it a try", to really liking it. Definitely old school Ogre Battle vibes, but way more detailed.
If anybody love dragon's crown you should totally try this game out
Why they don't release their games on pc? They're missing out on a huge market.
its fine atlus got this, they probably gonna port it a year later like latest brigandine game.
Pc is gay
@@ahmadzahidgani9140 Thanks for the heads up, didnt know it was by ATLUS since the dev did not mentioned ATLUS... i wonder how many more games i had missed out
@@csrjjsmp like your mom
@@csrjjsmp So it's down with the homies? Sounds like a plus to me.
Pleased to see you guys try a Vanillaware game.
Really wish you guys got to try Granblue Fantasy Relink. Missed out on a gem due to so many releases
They did dragons crown right? that bounce. Damn wish was on pc
Somebody has to tell AJ he's screwing himself over by killing everything with the high level old guy.
You should try other Vanillaware games. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is my top recommendation.
As someone who is a HUGE fan of Ogre Battle 64 and Fire Emblem, this game is like everything I could have wanted. I'm addicted and can't put it down
Hmmm... not sure the auto battler mechanics or anime art style is for me. But it's really cool to see Joe playing a variety of games!
4 months after release and ive completed 3 playthroughs.. i love this game so much i need more! I truly hope this game is successful enough to inspire more games with this gameplay. Wish i could forget having played it so i can enjoy it all over again lol, rare to feel that nowadays it feels like
A side note. Localization team is heavily criticized for changing too much, to the point of Characters' Personalities were changed from original Japanese script. In Japanese, Child Alain is depicted as being Selfless and more considerate to Josef.
They already clarified it was to make it more midievil sounding, was not censorship or bs like that. And besides that point speaking as an old school jrpg fan (playing Japanese ports and learning to read Japanese to play them) you cannot 1-1 translate most languages and get a cohesive to understand sentence structure. Go to any Japanese site, copy 3-4 paragraphs of kanji or phonetical hanagata paste into google translate and tell me you would want 20-80 hours of that kind of that.
@@winghong3 Because it does matter. Vanillaware Games are also the epidemy of narrative and story telling. There are similar games to their previous titles, but their Games still stand out and are held to the highest regard for the Story alone.
@@wikkedawsome I translate and do Localization for Japanese - Thai for more than 8 years now, and let me tell you this.
Sounding midievil - yes, they can do that.
Totally change sentence structure - No problem.
But it's a totally different matter when innate characteristics of each Character is changed.
For example, let say that in FF7R, they decided to rewrite's Barret's line to make him sound like a New York Gangster.
Or, Aigis from Persona speak more like Robocop.
That's how bad Unicorn Overlord "Localization" is.
Too bad its not being released for PC, would've loved to play it.
I love these tactics style games. Shoutout to symphony of war. Super cheap and well made game on steam. Anyways, this game is so good, the combat animations and game flow are awesome.
13 Sentinels was one of my top games of 2019, so looking forward to this.
As someone who loved Ogre Battle 64 back in the day, this demo really hit that spot for me. Can't wait to pick up the game when it releases.
You guys are fantastically funny. Please play through this game as a "let's play" or do a review!
Ogre Battle 64 meets the story of Brigandine. Can't wait for Friday.
If it was using the grid system where i can position my characters like in FF tactics id be interested. This just looks likr an auto battler to me.
Huge props for making the mouths match up to the dialogue. Demo is kinda hard to find on PS store, glad this video made it known.
I would love to play muramasa demon blade on PC 4k dammit, really enjoyed it on vita
You can just emulate it
I wanna see more prince oj for sure
Angry joe playing a vanillaware game? What strange reality is this?
I like that Alex had become associated with playing Large Busty women (alcina for example)
I can never get used to Joe and others play a JRPG or anime games.
1:55 ...I like the game already ! 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺😇😇😇😇😇
hope this comes out on PC
As great as that would be, I don’t think it’s likely, since all of Vanillaware’s previous games have been console-only. Would love to be proven wrong though.
@@trickstergod9179yea, hope they change that. Hate having their games be shelved with a plastic box when I get the next one unless PC where I still have games I bought from over 15 years ago I still bought up no issues.
@@Tombitp What?
Allegedly, I've heard they have a small team and are worried about having to ensure the game can run properly on numerous PC builds, so it's easier to only focus on consoles with specified specs already. Again, this is just rumored stuff on reddit and such, so take it with a grain of salt.
RIP, would have sold well on PC.
Kinda surprised Vanillaware didn’t get a much bigger shout out in this review. They’ve been putting out bangers for years. Muramasa The Demon Blade is (yes, I said IS) reason enough to go out and buy an original Wii right now. Good luck finding that game though. From one Joe to the next - go play some Vanillaware games. They’re great. I’m sure Alex has them all…
I don’t think Aj knows very much about vanillaware
Well vannilaware is da goat but they are still niche
I got a digital copy Muramasa The Demon Blade on the Ps Vita it's a damn good game.
What the fuck?! This looks awesome! Reminds me of valkyrie profile for some reason.
I'm so happy you're trying this out, I love these devs for the art and their games dragons crown and odin sphere, I hope chat tells joe to check out their "Nice" art.
The angry joe team would have had a blast with Dragons Crown.
Funny enough I don't really consider any of vanillawares game "anime" they all reek of western high fantasy, with just an extremely stylized art style. The only Japanese feeling one was 13 sentinels for obvious reasons. @phantomxero1x447
@@jakeryan2805 That and Oboro Muramasa would certainly be on the high end of that, yeah.
Vanillaware has ALWAYS been known for very artsy games, Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown being the two I've actually played. They've been known to make it beautiful WITHOUT using 3D Graphic Models to do it, to give it that good ole' hand drawn feel to them. Might be a good idea to keep an eye on this company's set of games after this one.
So many people don't even have this game on their list of February releases. Such a dang shame, it's going to be amazing.
I absolutely love Ogre Battle 64! This game looks very much like it! Definitely will give this a try.
I'm a sucker for Vanillaware games, but this one is a legit banger. I've been playing it the past couple of weeks to wind down after a long day at work. It is a legit tactical JRPG that is soooo deep. I love it.
DUDE i'm buying this shit, looks tight af
I didn’t expect you guys to play this game! You always seem to shy away from Fire Emblem and Triangle Strategy. Glad to see this game is getting some notice!
After you take over a few areas this game really starts to open up. If you remember the gambit system from Final Fantasy 12 this game has somthing similar thats where alot of your strategy lies along with the class and squad make up.
I rarely preorder games but I did for this game because I love Ogre Battle 64 and really enjoy Vanillaware games. Plus I want to support games like this. Can't wait to spend time playing this game.
Definitely more prince oj needed lol also really hope you giys do a full review of this would love to hear your full thoughts
Big fan of dragons crown amazing art ;)
Please mention the plattforms at the beginning if you haven't.
This looks interesting, but is not available on PC.
This actually got me to download and try the demo. So @Atlus, the partnership is working! Keep it up.
Front mission 3 on the PlayStation 1 was a great game back in the day
Absolutely beautiful game
How games made us feel back then😢
It's Vanillaware, of course it'll be a banger. Too bad the Monarch edition is depleted in Europe...
this is so unexpected but I'm all here for it! Can't wait til the 8th of March. Got the monarch edition preordered 😎
the demo was so good. SRPG gamers have a gem with this one
it has made by atlus?damn i got high hopes for this one now
It’s only published by them
It's made by Vanillaware, who made a few recent hits like Dragon's Crown and 13 Sentinels, or Muramasa The Demon Blade and Odin Sphere to go back a little further. Atlus publishes it.
Vanillaware.
Atlus the 🐐
@@UltimaKeyMaster ah my bad. still very excited for this one, the fire emblem style gameplay is srsly underrated in the RTS genre
Finished my first run of the demo only a day out from the full release, and I can say without a doubt that March 8th simply cannot come fast enough. I don't know if this will be my GOTY like 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was for 2020, nor if it'd beat out any of my classic Vanillaware favorites like Oboro Muramasa. But in the 7 hours and 45 minutes I've had with the demo alone, this feels like yet another stellar entry in their lineup of stellar entries.
