The fact that they capture the xenomorph in the assembly cut made it better. It explained why the characters were so casual throughout the second act: because there wasn't any immediate threat to their lives. Without the Alien being captured, the second act is basically structureless.

The Assembly Cut is amazing. I love the whole Golic subplot. There have always been secondary antagonists in the Alien Universe. Usually motivated by greed. It is interesting to see the effect the Alien has on an unstable mind.
The opening is amazing. Just how vast and desolate the place is.

I'm glad to see a video about Alien 3 getting its just
deserts. Like the majority of good-natured Alien fanatics such as myself, I saw
this movie at a very age, and predictably I absolutely hated it. The dialog was
murky at best, the camera work confusing and I just kept saying to myself
"Where's the Pulse rifle?" “Oh, there it is, WAIT, THAT’S NOT THE
PULSE RIFLE SOUND!” However, I kept seeing the film on TV from time to time and
I wound up buying the special edition which contained the assembly cut, which
changed my view point entirely. This movie is now my favorite sequel, for a
couple of reasons. 1. It tries to capture the atmosphere of horror again like
in the first one; the creators of the first Alien wanted to make "The
Texas Chainsaw Massacre in space", which they succeeded. This movie takes
the model of the first one, updates it, and speeds it up if you will. For
example, in Alien, it’s a slow build of up suspense and a burst of horror in
the end. Note the long (sometimes excruciating lol) shots of the corridors of
the space ship, as well as shots of the space jockey and the derelict ship. It’s a healthy blend of, “Holy crap, what’s
going to happen next, and “Holy crap that happened.” Alien 3, just drops you into a world of
darkness right off the bat; it’s a filthy, rusty atmosphere filled with
characters that could have walked right of the set of the HBO show “Oz.” If that’s not terrifying enough, imagine you
being in that world with a monster that lurks in the darkness ready to strike, carnivorous
head lice that causes you to rock the bald look, your daily diet of corn bread
(which makes its third cameo in this series), orange juice and cereal, and
several dudes ready to cornhole you while screaming millenarian prayers at you.
This may sound like a masochist’s
paradise, but for me, it sounds like a nice pleasant stroll through hell. 2. I
like the idea of having of the characters having to revert to their whits in
order to kill the beast. No guns, no
superior technology, no ultimate badasses (With the exception of Dylan who will
always be an ultimate badass because he engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the
xenomorph.) In one corner a blood
thirsty efficient killer, “The perfect organism”, and the other a motley crew
of rapist, thieves, drugs addicts, and serial killers; Oh my. It’s similar
to predator, started off with superior technology (Aliens), ended with fisticuffs,
sticks and stones, and getting to the choppa.
This point is brought home with the deleted scene of them trapping the
beast. Third time is the charm for ol’
Ripley. Look how many times they tried
to xenomorph the creature in the first film?
The Assembly cut is a fantastic film, this channel is
awesome, and keep up the great work!!!

Having seen both versions, I think what makes the Assembly Cut superior is, for lack of a better term, being far less "Hollywood." It has far more character development (especially for Dillon, Aaron, and Golic), isn't afraid to expressly deal with the topic of religion in a mature manner, and has FAR fewer loose ends and plot holes than the theatrical version.
My only complaint with the AC version is the less than stellar CGI effects (and the scratchier sound in some scenes). The alien isn't as believable in some scenes, and Ripley's new death scene... I'm not sure whether I prefer the original or AC Ripley death. Original sequence had, by far, better editing, effects, and looked more convincing, while the AC death shows how much of a threat an alien queen can be even without being seen, and spares Ripley the pain of having to give birth to her (though who knows, maybe dying before hitting the furnace... ARG, forget it, I don't wanna think about this any further), but is more jarring due to how it was crafted.
My favorite new scene in the Assembly Cut was them successfully trapping the alien. Really took me by surprise, and was an awesome scene from a storytelling perspective. One of Ripley's attempted rapists manages to redeem himself by being bait, the audience gets a few minutes to breathe while the alien is trapped... and perhaps most fascinatingly, sets up a HUGE sense of dread knowing that the thing isn't going to be trapped there forever (and just how it escaped was probably the next best added scene, just... holy crap that was insane).
Bottom line though... the Assembly Cut, somehow, turned Alien 3 from a mediocre sequel into a good one that's actually worth watching and considering as canon. It finally gave weight to the argument that, if you look past Hicks and Newt's deaths, you still had a good movie. It went from being a meh 5 or 6/10 to being a shockingly good 7 or 8/10 sequel that turned out... well, still inferior to Alien and Aliens, but now a genuinely GOOD Alien film, far better than it had any right to be given the now legendary amount of executive meddling it endured. That's an absolutely amazing cinematic achievement.

For me, Alien 3 is the darkest, the most disturbing and in general the most convincing from the franchize, as far as the atmosphere of the movie. David Fincher is a master of dark art for the silver screen. Just consider his other movies, such as Seven....

I agree completely. The much maligned film is actually the one that gets most positive reaction from people I've watched the franchise with for the first time. Obviously it threw some noses out of joint when it first came on the scene, but I think Alien3 actually holds up better than Aliens after all these years: the gung-ho jingoism and happy ending of the second film maybe just doesn't wash with more cynical, modern audiences.

The Golic subplot was definitely needed, it's omission was a rank oversight by the producers and Fox. Terry Rawlings mentions how he begrudgingly had to trim the film down in an interview. In the theatrical cut Golic is essentially left strapped to the bed in the medical bay forever.

Director David Fincher certainly knew what he was doing. He tried his utmost in spite of studio executive interference to create a work of art. Sadly, the studio has ultimate control and just as with the blossoming DC cinematic universe, it suffers from incessant studio executive committee interference. Years later, Fincher refuses to return to create a directors cut of Alien 3.
Its much like 1984's Dune directed by David Lynch. Another film wrought with studio interference which left the director extremely disgruntled and refusing to return to help 'fix' the film for the fans so many decades later. Such a shame.

The assembly cut is far superior except for two things: I much prefer the alien coming out of a dog than an ox as it more resembles a dog. I also loathe the assembly cut's shot of Ripley falling into the molten steel. It looks like an unfinished effect. The original looked far better. Ultimately, we'll never get to see Alien 3 as it should have been, but it's still my favourite of the series.

Just discovered your channel a few days ago and am immersing myself in it - great job.
Nice to see Alien 3 getting some level-headed attention, rather than the usual rabid criticism. This is actually my favourite movie of the trilogy (it will always be a trilogy in my eyes), and the theatrical cut at that. The movie oozes atmosphere which I love and really took the franchise back to the horror genre, improving on Alien IMO, and being more suspenseful than the action flick that was Aliens. I love the bleakness of it all, the wonderful soundtrack, and the choice of “protagonists” as hardened criminals, which makes the viewer question who is the real villain in this - the xenomorph that is just behaving according to its nature, or the despicable criminals who chose to commit their crimes despite knowing their actions were wrong.
Fury 161 is a dirty, dangerous, imperfect world where the characters have to make tough choices, compromise, and cooperate with opponents to defeat a greater enemy - not so different to real life - and IMO the sad ending of mutually assured destruction is the perfect tone to end a trilogy where humans have been doomed from the start.
    Keep up the good work!

By definition 100 is the mean or average IQ. 68% of people are between 90 and 110, and 16% are above 110 and 16% below 90. That makes an IQ of 85 the lower 90th percentile in intelligence. And being that the studio didn't have a finished script when filming started, it being David Fincher's first film, I think he did a great job with it and it foreshadows similar artistic taste to what he later did with Seven and Fight Club by making everything just dirty and delightfully gritty. While I do love it's content, I think it's Fincher's artistic touch that make it really beautiful in that off putting kind of way. Which is why I like the theatrical version more; the extended cut does explain more, and with the problem in size of the alien coming out of the dog, I feel the scenes that were omitted were cut in good taste because it does have better flow of the story. I was absolutely enthralled the first time I saw the Assembly Cut because it was like watching a brand new Alien film from the "golden age" of miniatures, practical effects, and smart storytelling. I loved the alternate recovery sequence, especially the exterior shots of Clemens wandering and Andrews's report (the theatrical version is so goddamn hokey). The ox-burster looked awesome. The extended trapping sequence with Ripley helping her previous attackers in the heat of the moment, followed by Junior's sacrifice, added great depth to the "allies by necessity" concept and furthered the theme of redemption and self-sacrifice. Dillon's additional dialogue in the meeting hall ("You got a weapon? You got a blade? Then you take it out and you fuckin' use it!") and in the furnace ("This is as good a place as any to take your first steps to heaven.") were fantastic character moments that provided additional thematic value. The shots of Weyland in pain clarified his identity and Ripley's burst-less fall looked so much better than the cheesy theatrical version did.
The only bit I don't like about the AC is the alteration to Elliot Goldenthal's score (the "Adagio" track) during Ripley's death. The somber payoff as she goes over the edge is sadly gone.

Alien 3 has grown to be my favorite Alien movie after the Original... It's bleak story and atmosphere was actually refreshing to me and the acting in it was great.... To me it was a movie going back to its roots... A bunch of nobody's facing a perfect killer... It was a movie that showed how deadly and clever the Xenomorph is unlike its predecessor that had Xenomorphs like cannon fodder for marines... I still don't get all the hate it gets, to me it was a perfect way to end the franchise... With Ripley sacrificing herself in the end... A very underrated film in my opinion

The Assembly Cut is the definite version of the film as far as I'm concerned. Though I slightly favor the dog birth scene from the theatrical (I feel it intercuts better with the cremation scene), everything else about it surpasses the theatrical version, especially everything that has to do with Golic, who goes from a one-note character that just disappears with no explanation in the theatrical, to someone with an actual impact on the story. It's also nice that McGann's memorable performance as Golic gets more screentime in the Assembly cut. I also think Elliot Goldenthal's score is absolutely stunning and quite underrated. Fincher did his best with what he had (barely a script, constant studio meddling) and all things considered, it's kind of a miracle of a film.

I've only seen the version where the Xenomorph emerges from the dog but I've always thought the creature was way too big for a dog. The Xenomorph is so large it seems like it was just wearing the skin of the dog as a suit.

    • @Huggamugger1
      @Huggamugger1 7 років тому

I agree. So why was it so big? There wasn't any room in its body for the dog's organs, muscle or bones.

    • @Wolf10media
      @Wolf10media 7 років тому +1

Some possibilities, growing within the animal and exploded out of it. Or the creators had no idea in mass and shape and just thought the dog was a choice for a face hugger victim. We can just chalk it up as "we needed an alien in here some how." However how does the dog die this time now that the ox has been added?

The game is nowhere hard as people make it to be. this is coming from a guy who plays nightmare mode:
      1-Never run at all.
2- Never use the motion detector when Alien is near especially in the locker.
3-Avoid the lockers as much as possible because Xenomorph is scripted to search the locker your hiding in only use it when there are nowhere else to hide Most time you better off hide under desks, beds etc.
4-Ironically Xenomorph actually rarely searches the vents for you.
5-Guns are useful in a way to "summon" the alien if you are encounter hostile human and prefer to deal with Alien over them he will kill them.
6-Yes you should build/make a lot of Noise Makers / Flashbangs to distract the Alien.
7- EMP mines Boltgun(headshot) and stun weapon are the best way to deal with androids.
8- Flamethrower and Molotov cocktails are the best way to defend yourself against the xenomorph and scare him away.

My favorite addition in the Assembly Cut is the Golic storyline, I find it absolutely fascinating, and Paul McGann's performance is bone chilling ("sorry-sorry-sorry!!" after he cuts his fellow inmate's throat).

I enjoyed the film upon it's release in 1992, when I was 7. The environment of the prison / factory was so real and the characters full of emotion. And with Ripley and the alien being the answer to their judgement days, seeing their attempts at redemption was an amazing cinematic experience for me. Seeing Dillon's death scene stands out as one of the most emotionally compelling in the entire Alien series.

Great video. Alien 3 is definitely my second-favourite film in the franchise (after Alien). I think it's hugely underrated, and doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Okay, it's not perfect, but that was mostly due to Fox's constant interference with the project. In reality, it's still a bleak, gritty and very 'final' chapter of Ripley's story. Glad to see that it's becoming more appreciated in recent years...

Most definitely and I think The Assembly Cut has a lot to do with it. They did a great job putting it together for the 2003 DVD then the 2012 Blu-ray and I think it has given fans a better idea of Fincher's vision, and is a whole lot closer to it than the theatrical. Though I like both versions tbh! A lot!

The only problem is that I wish the scene of Ripley clutching the queen chestburster as she falls into incinerator should have been left in.

Alien 3 was actually the first alien film i watched. My dad didn't want me watching these films, but i managed to get a copy anyway and this was my introduction to the alien universe. Soon after i was introduced to the aliens colonial marines comics before i then went on to watch the first 2 films. I was hooked. However I saw the original version first and there were a lot of oversights that screwed up the original. What the hell happened to golic? The last you saw and heard of him was when he was tied to a bed in the infirmary. The dogburster scene always broke my heart because I am a dog lover and the dog in the original did an amazing performance during his painful death. Now, nearly 30 years on I only accept the new assembly version, the dog was removed completely, and golic's demise was finally explained and as a whole the film made more sense. However I hated the fact that they killed newt and hicks after everything they went through to survive in the previous film, I felt their unfair death was a betrayal to everything the fought for. But due to the circumstances it was probably better that they had died. Having newt a child survive on a planet with over 20 rapists and child molesters would have turned the story very dark as they would have had to act on that to keep the realism. Secondly hicks being alive still would have caused a problem for the prisoners, being a soldier and potential guardian of Ripley, it would have caused more unnecessary story pacing with him standing off with the prisoners, not to mention he would also be able to back up ripleys claim about the alien. It works better when she is seen as the crazy lady spouting insane accounts of an alien creature without anyone else to back up her story. That said I was really excited to hear that Neil Bloomkamp was going to make an alien 3 reboot where hicks and newt survived and none of the events on fury 161 ever took place. He had Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn both invested in his story and were happy to reprise their role. But then Ridley Scott got involved and told him to stand down because he was creating Prometheus at the time and didn't want Bloomkamps reboot to overshadow his prequel.

I always felt that Alien 3 was actually the darkest, most-disturbing and bad dream-like of them all. The fact that the most-loved characters were killed off (early on) set the stage for its shock/horror and sense of dread value. It was probably the goriest (whether visually graphic or implied) of the first three, too. I remember leaving the theater feeling depressed and beat up, which means A horror movie did its job and was certainly a 180 of Cameron’s “Aliens.”
My only critique was the inferior special effects which of course, were as a result of the movie’s many production issues.
You did an excellent job in this and I’m always blown away at the detail of work and narrative dialogue you come up with for these shorts. They‘re like well made mini-documentaries especially for us Alien franchise aficionados who can never get enough.

I think the assembly cut is the better version of the film, especially in the 2009 Alien Anthology box set, where they were able to repair the damaged audio. In particular, the expansion of the story of Golic and his tie-in to the plan to flush the alien into the toxic waste bunker. That thread of the story really expands beautifully and you get that dreaded "oh no" reaction when you see him cut the guys throat and open the door. It's really beautiful. The expanded dialog with Dillon and Ripley is also good. You find out about their religion and outlook on being the despised and forgotten on a frozen dump of a planet where everything sucks.

My only complaint with three was the death of Newt. Hicks surviving is really optional, if he lived than he should become Ripley's love interest but still die in the same scene the doctor does in the canon version. It would make Ripley's death sting even more if she had to say goodbye to Newt first.

For me there are numerous scenes that made the Assembly Cut better than the theatrical release. First of all, I loved the greater focus on the inmates, how they interacted and associated with one another... And the way it led to a more detailed portrayal of Gollic was great. Especially with his growing obsession with the xenomorph. I also liked how their plan to trap the alien in the toxic waste storage room actually WORKED. It made it that much better when Gollic let the beast out.
I've said it before and I'll say it again... While I'd be content if Ripley's story had ended with "ALIENS", I found "ALIEN 3" to be an enjoyable movie. Sure it's flawed, but what movie isn't? In my opinion, it fit the narrative of Ripley's story well. Time and time again she has lost those who were close to her, who she cared about... And each encounter with the xenomorphs carried the risk of her death. The way I saw it, her story could just as well end poorly as it could end with her living happily ever after. Well... Relatively speaking. No doubt she'd be plagued by the trauma of facing the xenomorphs for the rest of her life had she survived. But her making one last sacrifice to hinder WY and take a queen chestburster with her? I could think of worse ways for her to be killed off.

I love Alien 3. It is just about equal to the first one. The acting is incredible and Fincher is a genius. For me Clemens is the second or third best character in the whole series. Dillon is great too. The Alien itself is the best design as well (at least in the close ups anyway).

I dig Aliens 1-4. I love Ripley and the whole alien universe. Not so crazy about the last two movies but I still watched just to see the story unfold.

I didn't even know that the 'assembly cut' existed. Thanks for the information.

I think it would be good to know the story of items surrounding the franchise in depth just as you extend within the films with your videos.
A good start would be with the original toys like the 18 inch xenomorph action figure from kenner, I was born in 86 so I know almost nothing abut them (I was well acquainted with the 90s variants though)and that would help to connect the films with our world and what it meant to fans beyond the screen....

@0:15 "A less than than noble group of murderers and rapists." You mean to tell me that there's a noble group of murderers and rapists?! Wonder how that works...

Oh, must have heard it wrong. I didn't mean anything negative by the comment, I just thought it was funny at the time. I really enjoy your videos.
