      That and Prometheus. Lesson - ALWAYS send a warship. (In fairness to the crew of Covenant, their decision to change destinations was not without justification; what happened after they got there, though, was one clusterfuck after another.)

      But Paradise was an unsurveyed planet. They should have at least sent some kind of survey drone or Walter down to the planet first to run some tests. All of it could have been avoided if they had taken simple precautions.

      Like I said, once they got there it was one clusterfuck after another. The novelisation explicitly states that they did run scans, and gives explanations afterwards as to why these erroneously showed no danger. But not waiting until the storm had cleared and then doing a proper surface survey (which would have revealed the Engineer city strewn with corpses and told everyone quite clearly that going down there was a huge fucking no-no) was an unforgivable mistake.

    I always felt so sad for Ripley, how the Xenomorph dominated her whole life, took her away from her daughter, she spent her adult life fighting it, still having massive psychological trauma from what she went through, and even after death she was cloned and brought back half alien.

      That’s true
      I think the Android or David 8 had a thing for her and this is all about a real human consciousness in a robot body trying miscegenation on a real human in a human body.
      The merging between humans and machine.

      The rage of the machine, android slave
      Frankenstein monster
      And
      Greed of the weyland yutani Corp.

      Even the names
      Covenant
      Prometheus
      Ash
      Ellen Ripley is HOT , her interaction with other women is excellent.

      Actually I think Ash was just as much a victim of the company as the rest of the crew. He was sent to ensure the delivery of the alien, at the cost of the crew if necessary. Consider this, Ash, like any robot and particularly one serving as the medical officer, was programmed with something akin to Asmiov's Three Laws to protect humans under his care, and it was this paradox brought on by his mission clashing with his programming that resulted in his freak out where he attacked Ripley. And it isn't until he can't deny the truth to Ripley that he breaks. That's why he admires the alien. Because, unlike him, it is "unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality."

      As great as Alien is, there’s many glaring potholes that should’ve been fleshed out. But they were manageable as a viewer.
      Aliens, despite its technical praise, had even worse plot holes that makes it infinitely not the greatest sci-fi horror.
      Alien is much tighter and better overall in my opinion. But the plot holes, such as you’ve identified, makes these two films much more inferior than they had to be.

    Here's the thing I don't understand about Weyland-Yutani: in both the comics and in-universe, it's established that humanity is branching out light years from home and can even terraform planets within a generation or two... *_so why the hell would you bring such dangerous/unknown specimens directly onto Earth?!_* A space station, a hollowed-out asteroid, a hidden base on Mars or the Moon or where ever...That way, if anything goes wrong, *_no one finds out about it._* Doesn't that make more sense? Not only is it safer in case you lose containment, but it's safer from prying eyes as well. I never got the whole thing of absolutely NEEDING to take the xenomorphs back to Earth. You don't have to, and it's just too big of a risk to Weyland-Yutani... as the Earth War comic shows.

That being said, the book is vague about the timetable, but I think the gestation would have taken longer than 24 hours too...so it might not have made any difference in the end, and might have helped Ash keep his cover.

What it delayed on was detaching, staying on to act as an air filter into Kane was back in his own atmosphere. IT makes no sense biologically not to lay the egg immediately, because something can potentially be done to remove the hugger otherwise. Ash knew the entire time what was going to be found and what was going to happen. That is my problem with Aliens, it blatantly ignores this. In Alien, Dallas says that the science officer they shipped out with was replaced with Ash just days before leaving Thedus. Plus special order 937 says "Nostromo re-routed to new co-ordinates". So the company already knew about the derelict as they decoded the beacon before the Nostromo set out back to Earth.

    Ripley's being a stickler for the rules indicates her naivety as to exactly how far the company would go to secure a sample for its bio weapons division. Part of the horror here is watching all that come crashing down as she begins to sob uncontrollably after confronting ash in that computer room and realizing that he's been protecting the creature under company orders. Seems this is the first time the company overtly sacrificed a human crew and gave an android full control of a mission. They called the computer Mother but its seems mommy's new roll was to cast away the people and nurture a monster. That's a horror that seemed to go missing in the other films. They were doomed from the very beginning because they were sent to get the creature.

    • @TheKyrix82
      @TheKyrix82 5 років тому +15

      Well first off, no, it wasn't naive. At the time, they had absolutely no way of knowing that the signal was a warning, not a distress signal. They thought they had been directed to help someone in need, and merely figured they got there too late for the people who sent the 'distress' signal. Secondly, and this goes hand in hand with the first point, they had no idea WHAT the facehugger was, much less why anyone would want it for bioweapons, or anything else. Among the possible scenarios, it was considered that it might have some sort of virus, or that it might shed some sort of dangerous spores aboard the ship. The crew were, in fact, puzzled that the facehugger would put Kane in a coma and then work so hard to keep him alive. And finally, Mother was not trying to thwart Ripley in any way. In the scene in question, she had set the self destruct and found Jones and was going to put herself and the cat aboard the shuttle to flee. She discovered the alien was aboard, and tried to stop the self destruct, but she got there too late. It was stated that the timer, which I believe was something like ten minutes, had a five minute window to deactivate, after which NOTHING could stop it from going up when time ran out. Mother's 'failure' to stop the self destruct wouldn't have done anything to protect the creature, it just would have ensured that Ripley and Jones DIDN'T board the shuttle, or launch it, thereby ensuring that all of them, alien included, died when the Nostromo blew up. If anything, Mother was ensuring the destruction of the creature.

    Great video.
    I always make arguments that Ripley was an actual smart protagonist and that the alien wouldn't have killed everyone had they freaking listened to her... but this is easily the best counter-argument I've ever seen to that. Sure, she would've saved everyone other than Kane (I don't think a baby chestburster would've been a match for Dallas and Lambert, deleted scenes and the novelization make it clear they have weapons, and there'd be no place for the alien to hide in such a small contained room), but eventually Weyland-Yutani would've gotten to LV426 and Earth would be screwed.
    Ash, ironically, saved the human race by letting them back on.

    • @Ensign_Cthulhu
      @Ensign_Cthulhu 6 років тому +4

      In the Dark Horse Comics timeline, which I regard as semi-canonical, the worst happened anyway. As for the baby chestburster, that thing can move pretty fast, and with Lambert screaming her head off as it emerges that's one gun out of the fight. Shoot it and it probably spills acid everywhere, burning both of them very badly. It doesn't end well, whatever happens.
      At the end of the day, they knew where that alien ship was or they'd never have rerouted the Nostromo there. Disaster was inevitable unless they had set the lab up on LV426 and written off the scientists, never allowing them to leave. That was the only way to be safe with this thing.

      To each their own. Not gonna disrespect you or anything for finding Resurrection great, but to me, it just didn't hit home after Aliens. Alien 3 with that CGI disaster was just terrible, the characters lack luster, and plenty other things I'd prefer not going into. Resurrection felt more like a Predator movie; they tried adding in humor and "steamy" scenes, which just wasn't my cup of tea. Had the Xenomorphs, but it didn't feel like an Alien movie at all. More like some B-Grade action film. Not the "all-time horror classic" I know and love.
      Not to mention, it continued with the trope; "An Alien Movie Isn't an Alien Movie Without Ripley." Honestly, Aliens would've been a great conclusion. Maybe Alien 3 could've been about Amanda or something. Hell, even after Alien 3, they should've just been done with Ripley's character. Without a doubt, Alien 3 and Resurrection are the two worst films in the franchise.

    Very interesting theory. Well done. I was thinking of another possibility if Ash didn't interfere like he did and if Dallas decided to go with the quarantine procedure.
    If the 24 hour quarantine went through without any interference and problems, the Facehugger would have implanted the Xeno in Kane and die. Then, if Ripley and the crew was quick, they would bring Kane inside the ship and freeze him before the ChestBurster was fully grown. Ash would be successful in carrying out his Special Order without any loss of life. Except Kane but that'll be when the Company does their 'studies' on him and the Xenomorph.
    Then again, Ash would still let Kane in to the ship to complete his Special Order breaking quarantine. Again, without having any of the crew killed. Just when the Facehugger finishes implanting the Xenomorph inside Kane, he would secretly scan Kane to see what the Facehugger did and find the developing ChestBurster inside him. He would recommend to freeze Kane immediately to 'prevent a spread of possible infection' throughout the ship.
    Then, the crew would go on their 10 month journey home. Ash would have himself wake up a little early and inform the Company that he has the organism and they are on route back and to be ready. The crew would possibly be debriefed and would go on about their lives while Ash and the Company would study Kane and the Xenomorph.

    If Ripley followed quarantine, the Alien would have been birthed, with nowhere to hide, the burster would have been vulnerable. After the initial shock, Dallas or Lambert would have opened the airlock, and it likely would have run to hide somewhere close, likely still on the ship. After quarantine, they would have been allowed back on the ship, and scanned for embryos, turning up negative. Once taken off, the beast would have went into hibernation somewhere on the ship. The crew returns to hyper sleep, and on to earth, after jettisoning Kane's body as it was in the movie. Somehow, MUTHR knows the creature is still attached to the ship, and sends an encrypted message back to WY. The ship is held at a WY checkpoint in the outer planets, the crew is debriefed and sent back to earth on a shuttle that can take all but 3 of the Nostromo crew, Ripley, Dallas, and Parker draw the short straws, and await another cargo transport expected within 3 days. WY reps find the hibernating beast, and capture it in a stasis pod for study. Shit goes wrong, and cue 'Alien' to happen anyway.

    The arguments are convincing about the outcome. However, at that outcome, the three victim is more than necessary. Dallas and Lambert must not be infected, because their suits were still intact, so no quarantine law would prohibit them to get into the ship. And also a chest burster never tries to combat if not necessary, it endeavours to hide until it grows adult. So after they witnessed the violent birth of the xenomorph, they could immediately go to the dropship, and leave the whole monstrosity behind, because the chest burster wouldn't attack them. It would have been a kind of "happier" and in the Alien franchise.

    What if... Sir Ridley Scott had directed Alien 2. That would also be an interesting "what if" to think about. If alien hadn't fallen into the hands of Cameron, it wouldn't have been called "xenomorph", its life cycles including a queen wouldn't have been contrived, and it wouldn't have been portrayed as mindless insects/bugs, and the alien franchise as we know it would be totally different.

    I do have something gnawing my mind for so many many years... were WYC aware of the Xenomorph lifeform BEFORE the events of Alien 1979 ? I mean, I may answer my own question here with the proofs of Ash presence and purpose to gather intel and the specimen at all cost but how did WYC got to know about that alien signal? Was this planned to be shown after the evens of Covenant? Why did they simply sent them space truckers to investigate? To evaluate the deadliness of the xenomorph specimen? Wouldn't they had been more efficient in dispatching a pure scientific vessel instead?
    Even if I disliked Covenant a lot, I do hope we'll get to see how post Covenant and Alien 1979 bridge together!

  • @robertkreutzer4107

    It's probably safe to say, that if the quarantine had been enforced and the Alien had exited Kane's body, it would not have escaped the airlock, or the Dallas would have opened the exterior door and it would have left the Nostromo. The nature of the airlock means that it could not have escaped on to the ship itself. If it had been injured enough to bleed and create an hole, it would probably have been a fatal wound to a creature of its size (upon hatching). It looks far too small to seriously harm Dallas and Lambert. Without something to feed upon (and we can only assume that there were organic substances it could consume on the Nostromo), it seems unlikely that the Alien could have grown to a large enough size to be a threat. For growth to occur, it must ingest something. The mass has to come from somewhere. If Ripley had been obeyed, the body count on the Nostromo could have been just ONE.

  • @BowserKoopa1
    @BowserKoopa1 6 років тому +4

    After the chestbuster comes out of Kane, there's no way it would attack Dallas and Lambert. Just like in the dinner scene, it was smart enough to make its escape because it knows its definitely way too small and vulnerable. It has to get away and allow itself to grow bigger and stronger. Dallas and Lambert might have killed it, but even if they missed, it would have escaped. Then it might have come back later after it grows bigger, although its not sure how much time that takes, probably several hours. Meanwhile with Kane dead, Ripley would still force the others to stay outside for the 24 hour quarantine. During that time, its anyone's guess whether or not the alien would come back to attack. If Dallas and Lambert are in the inner lock hatch, the alien would probably not be able to get to them, and they could wait out the 24 hours. But if they are on the outside, and if the alien comes back, they may very well wind up getting killed.
    I think that only Kane would die, and its not sure whether or not Ash reveals his true colors. But either way, the Nostromo goes back to Earth, and Weyland-Yutani has the ships data, coordinates, etc., everything he needs to send an investigation crew to LV426. Ash would know that this information is just as important as obtaining a specimen and bringing it back. I'm absolutely positive that if Ash couldn't bring one back, all this other info would be just as valuable to The Company. From there, humans getting involved with the aliens, it'd be game over for our species.

    • @Gustav_Kuriga
      @Gustav_Kuriga 5 років тому

      Except that completely ignores the fact that The Company ALREADY KNOWS where the planet is. Furthermore, this ignores the fact that Weyland manages to get specimens anyway at a later date. Whether or not the alien gets on the Nostromo changes nothing except crew survival.

    • @Cyanwasserstoff
      @Cyanwasserstoff 5 років тому

      @@Gustav_Kuriga Except that Wayland Yutani did not know the exact coordinates of the planetoid with the Xeno. They know that it has to be somewhere in that sector (likely because they received the signal and did encode it), but there was a small problem. The lost ship nostromo and crew had shattered the image of Wayland Yutani and also did cost billions of dollars. The signal also got deactivated, so there it was getting very hard to locate the excat location of the planetoid. That is why WY started to terraform in that sector. They could sell it as "building better worlds" to the public and where secretly searching for the location of the Xeno infected ship.
      Alien Isolation does pick up some parts of it "the black history part of WY about the loss of the nostromo and it's crew" and that it also caused a strong financial damage. The company also did not like to talk about this incident

      They never had to go down there. Kane was on a tether, so when something went wrong, they likely reeled him back up.
      They probably carried Kane by slinging his arms over their shoulders. It probably was a long, tiring, and laboring trip back which was why they really wanted back on the ship (along with being scared themselves and also being concerned for Kane) despite the quarantine rules.

    Overlooks one fact: While they were in the airlock Dallas and Lambert had their environment suits; Kane didn't. When the facehugger dropped off Kane, he would have been asphyxiated since the airlock wasn't pressurized. Whether the chestburster would have survived would have depended upon whether it would have been able to attack Dallas or Lambert and usurp their environment suits, or whether the chestburster, free of Kane, would be able to force its way into the pressurized area of the ship.

    I would have x rayed Kane after he woke up instead of assuming that a creature that stuck to his face, kept him alive and then just left him and died for no obvious reason. Ripley was smart and thinking outside the box but this was a rookie and and highly unlikely chain of events upon Kane waking. I know it was necessary to move the plot on, but this is the only stupid part in Alien for me. Still one of the scariest and brilliant films ever, the whole film is a rollercoaster ride of anxiety and fear. Not many films can achieve this for the full movie, we only catch a break the moment Kane wakes and after the Alien is ejected from the airlock.

    I get quite annoyed with things like not doing quarantines and stuff when I watch these horror type movies. Aliens is at least realistic about quarantines and how people are torn during a real situation, though I never fully understood Ash's whole thing as the android and how he acts. But besides Aliens the only other movie that I thought was done right was Life, where the scientist have take all the precautions that should be taken in that case.

    Ash is the newest Android to appear in the series. He was built just before the Nostromo ships off, just long enough to have his program installed, but not long enough for much of anything else. He Knows Jack s**t about human behavior and emotions. Instead of picking up on these behaviors, he replaces it with his own bizarre, cynical, sticks-out-like-a sore -thumb behavior. So when he is confronted with strong emotions (his own mortal fear) and strong behaviors (Ripley's outburst of anger & fear at him), it 'does not compute'. Weyland-Yutani must not want the alien that badly. They sent an unproven, underdeveloped Android with no combat programming & an inability to blend in well, to retrieve the ultimate weapon in a dangerous mission where combat programming and blending in are necessary...??? And that's not the only reason I say that about the company: He's an OUTSOURCED Android...!!! Made by Hyperdyne Systems...
    Meanwhile, Weyland-Yutani, the biggest company there is, makes better androids, and they could have done it in-house without a paper trail 😯🤔😶

      Pretty sure it was not the entire company that knew about the whole deal but some department who had to work with what they could get their hands on, fearing for someone else taking the credit for any major developments if they told the higher-ups, and those higher-ups assign someone more competent with proper resources to collect the xenos.

      Z Zs and that is why I make comments on topics of discussion, because sometimes I get brilliant responses like yours. Makes total sense. Low level execs found out about the Xenomorph somehow(just like Burke in 'Aliens'), and scrambled to put together a low budget retrieval plan... Before someone with more money higher on the corporate food chain finds out, takes over, sends A Weyland-Yutani Walter or Bishop Android with an actual plan on the Nostromo, and captures the Alien. Or, the top brass could find out and just send in waves of mercenaries a-la-JP lost world and bring back pretty much everything.

      Z Zs yeah, I understand. I once worked for an American car company, which starts with 'F' & ends with 'D'... The hierarchy, and cutthroat nature of the company made me sick. BTW yeah, Androids- bad idea. Let's see, through the series there's: Ash (Glitchy, Incompetent, prone to murder-ee/rape-ee outbursts), Bishop (Shining example of what an Android should be), Call (Defective Android with no program, serves an imaginary purpose), Walter (Excellent Android, but unfortunately MAY have been built with certain software that will sabotage his CPU if certain other Androids happen to need to steal his body), and finally... David, who might as well be Skynet. 5 of them. 2 could kill a person intentionally, 1 accidentally, 1 unintentionally if his program was overridden, 1 you are safe around. Yeah with todays incompetent workforce, it would probably be a higher number than 4 out of 5 that will or may kill.

    I would’ve said “ Bring the damned auto doc to the airlock and treat them there!”
    One thing I have consistently noticed in a lot of sci-fi, in fact, I want to say that the only one I’ve seen it apparently done right was Final Fantasy: the spirits within, is why are there no emergency medical alcoves located right next to the freaking airlocks for specifically that sort of thing. Seems that sick bay is located right smack in the heart of every single ship/space space in almost every science fiction universe.
    Going on a bit of a rant here, particularly as this sort of situation is something of a cliché in sci-fi these days, but when you’re in the true unknown like space, you can’t just write some heartless rule and expect people to follow it (in fact cliché seems to be at least one person won’t) yet human nature, nor apparently time factor for medical emergencies, is never taken into account in starship design. Hell, in Star Trek it’s even joked about with the site to site transport from the surface of an unknown planet directly to sickbay, but even then that’s more of a time issue than a quarantine procedure (yeah, I know, transporter supposed to filter out biological pathogen’s, but there’s been episodes were doesn’t pull it off).
    I think if the Nostromo had a medical alcove located right next to the airlock, even accessible via side door in the airlock, everyone would’ve been happy (except ash) and they would’ve been able to flush the chest burster as soon as it popped out.
    I sincerely hope that the spaceship architects of the future take human psychology 101 as part of the required courses in starship design.
