I always thought Apone was authentic. Learning that he was a USMC Sgt in Vietnam, now I am not surprised. Much like R Lee Ermy nailed the DI in Full Metal Jack by simply playing what he knew, Al Matthews gave the same type of performance in Aliens with Apone and it showed in the authenticity of the entire unit. His "Look into my eye" comment to Hudson conveyed awesome menace and retribution and that had to be improvised. Only a SGT knows how to convey menace like that in so few words. Rest in Peace Sgt Apone.
Yeh he was the real deal. Life experiences made play the part so well!
Really wish he had more screen time at least until the near end of the movie. He deserved it.
Always glad 2 read profound comments about d SF movie I love most
He was legit AWESOME.
The 'Look into my eye' scene Apone was giving Hudson the finger. Watch how Apone points to his eye.

This makes me realise how much I would have loved a Colonial Marines saturday morning cartoon as a kid 😢
Take a look at the starship troopers roughnecks animated series kinda similar theming
Yeah I read about that. its a shame it never had a chance.
There is a pilot for the show somewhere. Can't seem to find it anywhere but I've read it years ago from legitimate sources.
It might happen now that *Disney* owns the franchise.
Someone just needs to pitch the idea to them.
Shouldn't be a cartoon. Live action series , and keep it 18 plus!
Oh man, a prequel movie to Aliens showing what the Colonial Marines had done previously would have been awesome. What a shame we will never see that
If the Marines taking on extraterrestrial life was an everyday thing for this Same team of soldiers, it really makes you realize how lethal and terrifying the xenomorphs are when they wiped out all these Marines who've definitely had experience fighting space monsters before.
yeah a movie about the pollux bug hunt would have been awesome.
Unless it's made by Disney. I'd prefer nothing at all over that.
The Inkslicer hence why the Yutami corp was obsessed with catching one alive and using them as bio weapons.

Thank you for mentioning him. He was the real deal.

In Reclamation (a prequel/bug hunt), we learn that Hicks was married to another marine whose unit was attacked by xenomorphs! He obvs didn't know for sure because he hadn't encountered them yet, but it's a really interesting set up to how he was deployed to lv426
I remember that in some military units "bug hunting" is annoying check of whole area looking for hidden people and places.
It actually fit a bit story of aliens because they expected to spend time wandering in base looking for colonists.
This makes so much more sense than the story he just told. I feel like if they had already been experiencing crazy aliens like this, they would have reacted different than they did when they experienced the xenomorph.
I'm a veteran and have never heard that term except in film.
@@Impulset0 And Im guessing that being veteran give all the knowledge of the world and some super power? Dont get me wrong but when someone start conversation or mention a lot that "he is veteran" he is not only annoying but also clearly point out that no one should listen to him because he is too full of him self to even bother to realize that he didnt actually saw that much and know much. Halo's Sergeant Major Avery Johnson was modeled after Apone. Apone can also be heard in the Aliens: Colonial Marine video game! Apone lives on forever!

Apone was one of my favorite characters. This series always kill strong and charismatic "leaders" too early - Dallas in Alien, Apone in Aliens, Clemens & Andrews in Alien 3, Elgyn in Resurrection
Dillon on Alien 3 lasted all the way to the end of the movie, he was charismatic & inspirational, got the cons to do what he & Ripley wanted. Lol the leader on 'Covenant' dies before he's even introduced.
That could be deliberate. Killing off the leadership of any unit or group is demoralizing, so it is easy to create confusion and fear among a group when there is no central figure to lead them. That way whatever is attacking them can pick off stragglers and breakaway factions early on, leaving less threats to deal with later. Also, losing members increase paranoia, and leads to internal fighting, making it even easier for an assassin to kill marks.
In original script he lasted alot longer but was stung by an alien stinger tail so was unconscious for alot of it . studio execs probably thought instead of paying him to lie on a stretcher for the rest of film just save money and kill off the character instead
ok dr froid
That is done for the horror element. If you are in a squad you follow your leader, if your leader dies aka your smartest most experienced person, it adds a new element of horror. Subtle, but there. It also drops the combat effectiveness of a particular unit. You want these aliens to feel scary, to feel like a true enemy. If someone beats up the strongest person you know, would you want to fight them?
The lines "Octurian poon tang" - and "another bug hunt" were seriously slept on lol. Id have loved to see an expanded universe based around Camerons installment
Arcturian 😂👍
@@steveshattuck8128Dorsnt matter with those Octurians.
I always assumed "bug hunt" was a nod to Robert Heinlein that the screenwriters slipped in, since the expression is used frequently in Starship Troopers.
Yup
Gorman: Morning Marines. Im sorry we didn’t have time to brief you people before we left gateway but...
Hudson: Sir?
Gorman: What is it, Hicks?
Hudson: Hudson, Sir. He’s Hicks.
Gorman: What’s the question?
Hudson: Is this gonna be a stand-up fight, Sir , or another bug hunt?
Gorman: All we know is that there’s still no contact with the colony... and that a Xenomorph may be involved.
Frost: Excuse me, Sir. A what?
Gorman: A Xenomorph.
Bill Paxton/Hudson is The Best. I love Hudson. R.I.P Bill Paxton
This is a dream channel. The world of the xenomorph is the culmination of what I believe to the best era of science fiction design...the 1970s. Thanks, fellow ponderer. Well done.
It’s because the Alien franchise is so much more than a horror. It’s sci fi, action, comedy, the storyline of the evolution of the alien species. Although the last Alien film was shit.
Cool video but the story in Bug Hunt doesn't really fit too well with the use of the phrase bug hunt in Aliens. From the way Hudson said it I got the impression that bug hunt meant a trivial, boring mission chasing annoying little pests. If bug hunt meant a very dangerous mission that could kill you I think they would have taken the briefing a lot more seriously.
He asked if it was another bug hunt or a stand up fight. As a former Infantryman. Stand Up fight is a fight against another military unit.
Whats described here definitely seems to fit the description of stand up fight, to me at least
I love the idea the Frost chambered a live grenade at 0:12 then hopped in a tiny dropship.
"Get on the ready line marines, it's time to die". Most bad ass line in the movie
Everyone except Hicks at the end of the movie: *Dead*
Well damn, Apone
“You always say that, Frost, you always say, ‘I’ve got a bad feelin about this drop!’”
“When we get back without ya, I’ll call your folks!”
You have like the best voice for explaining anything related to aliens.
Great video! Thank you for all of your hard work and that tribute for Al Matthews at the end. RIP Sergeant Apone.
I love the feel of the Alien Theory videos - the way they're presented, narrated, and how the audio is used to create a haunting, disturbing feeling without it being on the nose. I'd love to see another Alien film mimic this kind of tone and mood.
Good shit man, love the editing as always.
Your style of video would make for some great adaptations of some of these Bug Hunt short stories. Some I can see you doing are Broken, Exterminators, Dark Mother (as they expand on the characters from Aliens) & Deep Background, Deep Black and Dangerous Prey (simply because they are badass).
Rest in Peace Al Matthews
Yeah this has been my favourit video so far by far, it was just awesome! Sad to hear about Al though, 2 fallen soldiers now :(
It's entirely possible as well that "just another bug hunt" is now used to describe an easy or simplistic mission. And use the term bug for anything considered below them.
Good video. RIP Al Matthews.
Ah man I didn't know he'd passed away ! Rest in paradise
Damn. I was going to say that he wasn't dead (his IMDb entry mistakenly listed him as deceased for a few years), but it looks like he's gone for real.
And Bill Paxton. Two class act actors!
The ambiance is so perfect when he is reading it off.
Loved IT!!!! YOUR VOICE IS SO CLEAR AND ADDICTIVE. CAN LISTEN TO YOUR VIDS FOR HOURS!!! KEEP EM COMING!!!
Between the books Bug Hunt and River of Pain it really adds some very interesting definitions pre-Aliens
This is actually so damn cool. Same feel as old radio shows my dad used to listen to over 70 years ago. Same effect, the viewer/listener has to use their imagination, visualization. Guided meditation of a sort, takes the brain out for a walk around the block. Nice work.
You mean a walk in the park
@@WhiteJeezus no, wrong phrase. "Walk in the park" implies easy, relaxed, leisurely, simple. OP was talking about mental stimulation and exercise.

I hated the way they killed off Newt and Hicks.
And then brought back Hicks in that awful Colonial marines game but left Newt dead.
Ripley lost 2 daughters
@@acloserlook5823 yes she did. Her biological daughter died of old age. Newt was still a kid and I think her death was harder for Ripley because she was there for the death and "burial" in person. Her daughter was long gone by the time Ripley was awakened. I'm sure it was painful but she didn't go through it like she did Newt's.
Thought it was canon that newt and Hicks both got off hadleys hope

RIP SGT! Thanks for your service
Great video! I’ve always been curious about the bug hunt they mentioned in the film. They actually made it sound like a cake walk, but these life forms are comparable in deadliness to the Xenomorphs.
The description of the lifeform just sounds like a different kind of xenomorph though. "Black, glossy...hands like razors...Eyes hidden behind a membrane...

The fact that they had already been encountering mean aliens almost diminishes their contact with the xenomorph lol
Not really. These bugs are acting like real bugs. Xenomorphs are much different.
It actually made them very complacent, thinking the xenos were similar. They were not, obviously.
I knew Apone(actor) was thr real deal.
I've been around military people my whole life. Family, friends, neighbors.
You can just hear it when they talk. You see it, the way they stand, the way they walk. The way they gesture.
Didn't even need to do the research. I knew it. It's so rare that a Army, Navy, Marine, or even Air Force member slips past my notice.

Love this content and your in-depth analysis of one of the best franchises! I'm getting my Alien/Xenomorph half-sleeve tattoo finished on October 19th, and safe to say I'm only a little bit excited! 😂
Aloha from Hawai'i. I really love your commentary on the Alien, Predator world! I just found your link, and connected right there. 😆 Anyway Mahalo for making vids, and in Always a fan!. 😎🤙
The problem (sometimes) with extended universe stuff is that, in this case, Apone's team couldn't have seen these aliens before. The chatter in the atmosphere processor seemed to indicate no recollection of these creatures, or of their behaviors. They sounded surprised "...they're coming out of the walls...". They would also have known not to go in without munitions if they had even a LITTLE bit of experience fighting them. :)
That's fan fiction for you: never letting a little thing like continuity get in the way of the desire to jump on a bandwagon.
@Geroff Milan The fact that you ACTUALLY think that continuity should just be ignored sometimes and that characters doing things that make sense in their universe is "fan fiction," makes you unfit to carry on a conversation about objective quality.
Like the IP as much or as little as you want, but your like, or dislike, is irrelevant to whether or not certain objective qualities are "good" or "bad." For example, race/gender swapping existing characters, altering original visions yet still try to tickle nostalgia of people who grew up with the original characters, is a perfect example of emotion over quality. Imagine if a movie about the Holocaust only had Asians in the death camps. Someone might LOVE that, but it's objectively bad and ridiculously stupid.
These are great videos. The narrator is excellent, as is the content. Bravo!
Pitch Black was originally written as a possible, "Alien 3" story. This Bug Hunt story had a similar feel. A different variation of the "alien" is pretty interesting. David's drawing's and all.
I thought that was "The Cave"
Thats a great point the aliens in thi story sound like the ones in pitch black
Totally. That was the first thing that came to mind when hearing the description. Underrated movie IMO.. would be a trip to see the relationship between the baddies in pitch black and the engineer race explored.
The movie props hint that they had previous experience with extraterrestrials. The emblem on the side of the landing craft, which ended up being too small to see in the actual film, says, "Bug Stompers: We endanger species," implying that massacring aliens on behalf of human settlers is the main role of the colonial marines. Since this emblem is not actually visible, it is ambiguous in the first two Alien films whether humans had ever encountered extraterrestrial species before.
I was always interested in the previous encountered alien lifeforms in the extended universe. Have any of the materials outside of the films ever tried to introduce other sentient races besides the Jockeys and Predators? It always always felt vague, but interesting to think about if humans had already encountered basic lifeforms on different worlds, but were still actively seeking out other sentient races, hence the vital interest in the downed ship in the original Alien.
Yeah, I really wanted to know about other alien species in Alien lore too. After all the term "alien" shouldn't be focused only on 1 alien lifeform lol.
That’s what I gathered from watching the movies, that we’ve encountered alien animals on planets but hadn’t come across any advanced species until the space jockey.
I love this. Brilliant story telling and editing.

Also, this narrative of yours was well done - excellent job as usual. Exploding bugs? Yeah fuck that, but hey, those short stories were pretty good; especially the one that details Hicks and his Wife’s relationship.
Since I have no interest in reading this book, do tell what happens to Private Malinka since I can't find out any info about her.
If I may say something on here. Corporal Dietrich I feel like she was the Marines Corpsman, witch is a Navy/Marines job. there for she should have a Navy rank. The reason why I say this is due to when they found Newt and LT Gorman, Ripley and Corporal Dietrich had Newt sitting on that table, Corporal Dietrich was the one who gave Newt that on the spot check up like a Doctor. Who wins in a fight between Dutch's squad from Predator and Apone's squad from Aliens? How would Dutch's squad do against the Aliens and how would Apone's crew do against a Predator?
David Sastre this is a good ass idea
David Sastre even with superior tech compared to Dutch’s squad colonial marines have been shown to easily be slaughtered by predators before
@@Irishfrasa But specifically this squad. What do you think? And what about Squad vs Squad or Dutch vs Aliens?

Making the "bug hunt" into an event seems to go against the dismissive tone that Hudson uses when he mentions it. It always sounded like it was akin to a wild goose chase, and that they never actually saw any action.
Just brought Bug Hunt and read this story along with a few other shorts with the Aliens Marines. Nice to read a bit of backstory on these characters and give some of the quiet ones a bit more to do.
Shows us just how bad weyland was; sending a squad out without intel is a death sentence. It's the squad's own fault for lot listening to Ripley after this mission; they needed everything they could get
yeah not knowing they walking right into a death trap.
Weyland obviously wanted to see how effective the Alien species would stand up against well armed Space Marines. They got the results they wanted.
Strap cameras to them and keep sending people end until someone comes out
