I don't get why people keep sh1tting on Jayce's mom. There were literally zero chances he would have ever talked his way out of that situation, her meddling was the only thing that saved him from banishment.

I do find people often skip over the fact they were literally going to banish him if she hadn't spoken up.
@@thekid6467 and people who dont play league are probably not aware but... this world is very much one where if you're banished, you will likely die unless you can find another society to take you in. The outside world is DANGEROUS, filled not only with magic, but other monsters and predators and people. Jayce would have died so quick lmao.

I think I kinda understand why. It's basically as if you were trying to speak about your thesis and trying to convince a bunch of important scholars at uni, and your mom just interrupted your presentation and said to all your peers "don't mind him, he's still a kid in his head and he's a little crazy too". That's very diminishing and embarrassing. The thing is, as you pointed out, it probably saved his life, but people (and Jayce) can still assume he might have convinced them, and that therefor the mom ruined everything.
In response to you question of why do they wear masks here is some League lore:
So Piltover is not only a harbor and maritime city but also a narrow land bridge that links the north and south continent, and much like the panama canal in the Americas they also tried cutting a canal to join the east and west oceans, which has huge trade, military, and political relevance. It was for that strategic relevance that the upper class was very keen on making it happen to secure Piltover as a world power. However in their greed they tried to do it cheap and fast using unsafe and unstable methods (aka. Lots of chemicals) and in doing so trigger a massive disaster of tectonic movement creating a literal massive fissure on the south side of the river nearly destroying the whole city. In the aftermath of this is where you begin to see the big class divide where the wealthy live north of the bridge where it was mostly unscathed and the slums form in the newly created hole-in-the-ground (undercity) on the south side. And because this is a literal hole in the ground caused by unstable chemicals it becomes very polluted and does not naturally disperse. Hence the air quality is incredibly poor. Those from the high life are not accustomed to this and need air filters and gas masks, as it is too much for them, in comparison to those who grew up in the slums and just become accustom to it. That's also why the undercity has such a “chemical” theme to it, it is very purposeful to tie back to the lore. You also see this attention to detail referenced in the show with things like their own slang of “fissure folk” and “trencher trash”.
Another great attention to detail is in the beginning of the episode when Jayce and his mom are saved by the mage. When the globe is spinning around and then stops and transitions to the eye. The very center of the pupil stops directly over the geographic location of where Piltover is located on the fictional world of Runeterra, the name of the world in this universe, implying that he just teleported them to Piltover the main location for the show. And tie together why they are there.
HOLY cow that is some lore! Definitely gives context to the name "fissure folk" like you pointed out! Would seriously love to see more about all this, hopefully in season 2? 😄🤞
Wasn't Piltover built AFTER the fissure? Yeah, I'm pretty sure everyone lived in Zaun before the "accident" that caused the city to descend. Then the rich people abandoned it and made their new shining city on the hill.
@@darksaint0124 Yes first there was Osha Va'Zaun/Kha'Zhun whatever you may call it. An ancient Shuriman trading city. Then they blew everything up with chemical bombs and most of the city sank into the ocean. Then it was rebuild under the name of Zaun. Then they build the city Piltover (over the river Pilt) to connect the two continents, which became the new trading centre.
13:25 The sound you hear before he talks is his actual voice and language. he is wearing a device which translates what he says. not a robot, you can see 2 more of his kind first time they walk through the undercity, you can even hear them talk without translation (ep. 1)

In a show with so many truly awe-inspiring moments and scenes, on a re-watch you are able to rediscover the ones with a more quiet beauty and a more subtle nuance - the scene with Powder and Vander in the bar, one with absolutely no dialogue, is one such beautiful moment so perfectly shown.
I can´t get enough of arcane reactions, it is priceless to see both of their expresions
Anyone else now fluent in the meanings in Kiss' secret language of "sister" and "oh my gosh"?
Much respect for handling spoilers (or rather, the lack of presenting spoilers) so well. Many other people can't help themselves and get so enthusiastic about sharing things that they talk about way too many things way in advance. You aren't even budging a millimeter. Much appreciated.

The look Vi gives him is heartbreaking. I think it's the first time she'd ever seen Vander, her father figure, as fallible, and Vander treats her like an adult without sugarcoating it.

And so this masterpiece slowly unfolds... It warms my heart how invested you are into it (be it for the first time or the ?? time). This show deserves it. @Haylo In your reaction to ep 1 you mentioned you wanted to share the show with people around you, but many denied it as it is animated. Same with me. No one around me wanted to watch it as "animations are for children". Well, I managed to convince a few to watch at least the first three episodes with me... They are still recovering from ep 3 of this "children entertainment"😈 ...(saw that ep 3 is out on patreon already, else I wouldn't have written this..😉). @Kiss I love to see how you make the (emotional) connections to the characters so quickly, but I am a little afraid of ep 3 now ngl. Can't wait to watch it though. So glad I found you two! 🧡

I mean, in lore, he is magic, but Riot seems to be largely pretending a lot of Yordle lore never happened.
At this point, I heavily doubt they are ever going to bring up Glamour in the show, let alone Bandle City, and just Yordle weirdness in general.

FYI - Arcane doesn’t actually mean “magic”, although it’s often used in that context (as it is here). It means “understood by few; mysterious or secret”, which is often true about magic (as in this society), though if magic were common it would not be arcane. But you can have arcane things that are not magic, like “the arcane rituals of the sorority” (or some other club or secret society), for example.

@@bobscull4669 understandable that you would, as a word it's most commonly used to refer to magical or ritualistic things and has developed a connotation being related to the supernatural or atleast preternatural. Due to this connotation, while someone may refer to mathematics and sciences, stuff like advanced quantum mechanics as being 'arcane,' most wouldn't because when most think of 'arcane' they think of the aforementioned rituals/magic/secret societies.
I think the association has been around long enough and consistently enough to consider it a colloquial definition at the very least. I'm honestly surprised modern lexographers haven't added this definition to major dictionaries, as it meets the criteria for doing so. (It has widely been used in this way for an extended period of time).

Mel Medarda is one of my favorite characters ever. I've seen and read a lot of attempts of portraying politicians in art, from West Wing to Battlestar Galactica, from Spin City to Citizen Kane. I've also had time to read a lot, things like War & Peace, Anna Karenina, Pride & Prejudice. Hamlet and McBeth. Foundation and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Read The Iliad and Meditations, even read the Qur'an. From all of it I've never seen a better portrayal of how the psychology of a true politician really works, than Mel Medarda.
13:28 It's never said in the show, but I'm fairly confident that this is less a robot creature and more a cyborg. You can hear some noise before they speak in English, which I have always interpreted as they are speaking in their native tongue or it is all they can make for sounds due to nearly being wiped out centuries ago, but it gets translated for the humans through the suit.
2:40 this one is really interesting thing: arcane can be translated as secret or mysterious or obscure, so it is not exactly magic, but often used as "arcane arts" that means same as "secret arts" that often referred to magic or witchcraft.
I love the ending of this episode! It definitely makes you want to watch another one straight away.

13:40 the "robot race" already explained that his world was already destroyed by magic, his people transcended their corporeal body and became ethereal but that was an unintended effect of dabbling to far into magic. Thus his world was destroyed. So the robotic bits are just translating the noises and or frequencies into an audible language.
In a RPG world there are usually some kind of magics, such as Elemental Magic(fire, water, ...), Illusion Magic, Temporal Magic, Summoning Magic, Blood Magic,...,..., and ARCANE Magic. So in all rpg fantasies Arcane is something usually related to a "RAW MAGIC", something "PURE"...

The reason the enforcers wear masks is the air quality in under city sucks. It's a dirty industrial zone without any regulations.
i always thought that they did so because they did dirty work, following rotten orders, working for the system. there is a saying or smth -- when a person wears a mask, they show their true colors

I'm unfortunately not going to watch the video as I haven't seen Arcane yet (it's on my to-do list!) so I'll have to return once I've done that. I'm just commenting to suggest that maybe you guys would also like The Legend of Vox Machina which now has two seasons with a third on the way. It's based on the dnd game of a group of friends who are also voice actors, one of which is Ashley Johnson aka voice of Ellie in the TLoU game and Ellie's mum in the show. The actors are also the voices of their characters in the show, plus some other great VAs. They are also planning on releasing their second campaign, with completely new characters, as a show later this year or early next year called The Mighty Nein.
