    Also, the bridge fight is easily one of the best action sequences in a series that was already stuffed full of incredible action sequences. The amount of narrative symbolism and foreshadowing there is mind-blowing!

    • @ariochiv
      @ariochiv Рік тому +11

      That's the thing... these action sequences would be some of the best of all time if you just took them in a vacuum, without considering the stakes or the story implications. But when you consider those, and then add in the inevitable consequences of violence that are portrayed in the series... it's hard to think of any parallels. Some of the most exhilarating action scenes followed by some of the most emotionally crushing consequences of that violence... hard to believe this is based on a multiplayer fighting game, isn't it?

    Jinx's suicide attempt (cuz that's what it was) is so heartbreaking. I’m not sure if it’s been told yet but I believe the firelight bombs of Jinx’s purpose is to target weapons. If you didn’t notice, they landed on the guns of the enforcers. Hence Marcus losing his arm. Caitlin traded in her gun for the medicine for Vi which is a decision that may have ultimately saved her from an explosive end to her life if this is the case! Explains why out of all of them, only enforcers were killed while the others were only mildly injured.

    As if the reunion scene with the flare weren't enough, they spoil us with an even better scene in the next episode. Every frame of the entire show is a painting, every second has meaning. There's no fat to trim, the editing is unbelievably tight, and they trust the audience (like with the letter with Mel's seal on it. Not everyone noticed immediately that it was a letter from 'home', but it wasn't necessary for everyone to immediately notice. A lesser show would say "This letter from your family came today." Arcane does it by evoking her ring you probably remember and the microexpressions in her face when she sees the letter.
    It's a masterpiece 6 years in the making.

I've been in the computer animation industry and have seen lots of amazing scenes, but this sequence blows everything I've seen out of the water.

    Two difficult to notice items from this episode.
    When Jinx is going through her episode at her desk, you can actually see the mechanical firelights flapping their wings on the desk. They are made to fly toward and land on metal which is why they went toward the officers and landing on their guns.
    In the scene where Silco is talking to the council, you will notice there are large flowers blooming behind Finn. When Silco leaves the room, after having gassed everyone, you will see that all of the flowers have withered and died. This creates a great juxtaposition between the previous scene when you see the thriving tree being shown to Vi in the underground. Love this show. lol.

    "Why doesn't he need one" He probably does but he resists it better than the others because 1) he spent a lot of times mining in the fissures with Vander long before Episode 1 and 2) he still lives in the lower levels of the Undercity while those other barons try to get as close from clean air as possible. the fact that he was mining in his youth is probably significant because Sevika also mostly live in the lower levels and she needed a mask (but she's probably a bit too young to have known the worst of the mining).
    "why does she not talk to him" The reason Mel tries to ignore Viktor and talks only to Jayce is simply because she doesn't think she can convince Viktor (if she thought she could, she would absolutely talk to Viktor because convincing Viktor pretty much guarantees Jayce will be convinced too), not because she's looking down on him. She's not even from Piltover so I don't think she has the same prejudice most people in Piltover do toward the Undercity (the prejudice even Jayce showed in this episode). That being said, she absolutely uses the economic imbalance and other people's prejudice to advance her own interests so it's not like she's an angel. Basically her not talking to Viktor isn't a sign of discrimination, it's a mark of her being manipulative xD I'll let you judge if that's any better ^^

And he was left entirely alone, but then the kid manages to build a resistance army and sanctuary for addicts and victims. Ekko's reaction to Jinx calling him "The Boy Savior" tells us everything that went down between them after the explosion. Jinx chose Silco over Ekko.😢

    • @RickLeMon
      @RickLeMon Рік тому +3

      I can't help but think that if in episode 3, had Vi told Powder that she has an important mission for her. Since Ekko has lost so much, Powder needs to protect him. If Powder had a sense of purpose rather than feeling abandoned, this whole series would be considerably shorter and possibly happier. But Vi's long-term strategy seems to begin and end with her fists, so here we are with Jinx.

    • @cmcgccjsl
      @cmcgccjsl Рік тому +6

      @@RickLeMon I don't let Jinx off the hook. Jinx keeps making choices that sink her deeper into her own personal hell. Every criminal and murderer in Silco's crew (Silco included) is broken in some way. Jinx made Jinx with every choice she's made. She chose to spread her own pain around and to hurt other to match her own hurt. Ekko became what he is by making the opposite choice. Even in their confrontation Ekko again chooses the less violent path (mistake or not), despite just how many of his friends Jinx has killed.

      @cmcgccjsl Well, people don't choose to be schizophrenic. That mental health issue she has plays a big role in her choices. I'm not saying she doesn't have responsibility for some of her actions but experiencing breaks in reality which corrupts a persons ability to think logically wont lead to sensical outcomes. Couple that with a few other mental illnesses and throw them into a dystopian society and you end up with a bunch of people making morally questionable decisions. It is also important to note that Piltover is a dystopian society as well, not just Zaun. Also, being well adjusted or trying to be properly adjusted to a dystopian society is not a good measure of mental health to begin with lol. Even for those who are closer to modern morality. @_FirstLast_ Рік тому +12

    13:00
    There's multiple reasons I can think of for why she's addressing Jayce and not Viktor, and none are particularly rude or pompous:
    Jayce is a councilor, like Mel. Viktor is not. This makes them coworkers. Jayce can affect change to a substantially greater effect than Viktor can, especially when it comes to matters that would need the approval of the council.
    Hextech is Jayce's lifelong project and ambition. Viktor is Jayce's partner invited into the project. She's showing respect to the original project lead, even if that means disrespecting the partner.
    Now maybe Mel is class shaming Viktor, but that's not clear. When she caught them breaking into Heimer's workshop, she addressed them equally and referred to them collectively as "gentlemen". Maybe I'm forgetting something but I can't think of any other scene that shows Mel is a classist. Even in her flashback as a child she showed empathy towards a prisoner of war.
    Mel is much closer to Jayce than Viktor. Mel is having sex with Jayce, not Viktor. Remember, Mel is a manipulator, and she has years of strings attached to Jayce and virtually none on Viktor.
    Jayce is the idealist, he doesn't haggle. Viktor is from the streets, he always seeks an efficient angle (not meant as a bad thing) and questions motives. It would be much easier for Mel to get Jayce on your side, then have Jayce convince Viktor to come around than vice versa.
    Viktor is currently disassembling a fvcking hand grenade during the scene, she may be (un)consciously avoiding distracting him with direct questions.
    I think people read too much into the scene. Yes, it looks like she is ignoring him, because she is, but I think the reason is a bit more nuanced than "he''s street trash". She's been known to insult intelligence, though not to one's face, but I can't ever remember her insulting someone's background or status. If you need a good example of class shaming and superiority complex, look to another councilor, Caitlyn's mother. She oozes it from every pore. Mel is extremely diplomatic and careful in her delivery and choice of words. She is calculating for best conceivable outcomes.
    Anyway, that's my thoughts!! Comment if you agree/disagree.

    • @Rufofeli
      @Rufofeli Рік тому +1

      I think it's more like he's being an hindrance.
      At this point, Mel is still with the "Hextech Era" mindset and the absolute need to control those below Pilt because they are an obstacle to it. Viktor being the voice of reason and peace is not the best option and she doesn't want Jayce to hesitate.

    • @_FirstLast_
      @_FirstLast_ Рік тому

      There's multiple reasons she's addressing Jayce and not Viktor:
      Jayce is a councilor, like Mel. Viktor is not. Jayce can affect change to a substantially greater effect than Viktor can, especially when it comes to matters that would need the approval of the council.
      Hextech is Jayce's lifelong project and ambition. Viktor is Jayce's partner invited into the project.
      Mel is having sex with Jayce, not Viktor. Remember, Mel is a manipulator, and she has years of strings attached to Jayce and virtually none in Viktor.
      Jayce is the idealist, he doesn't haggle. Viktor is from the streets, he always seeks an angle (not meant as a bad thing) and questions motives.
      Viktor is currently disassembling a fvcking hand grenade during the scene, she may be unconsciously avoiding distracting him with direct questions.
      I think people read too much into the scene. Yes, it looks like she is ignoring him, because she is, but I think the reason is a bit more nuanced than "he''s street trash". She's been known to insult intelligence, but not to one's face, but I can't ever remember her insulting someone's background.

    • @kwabena3667
      @kwabena3667 Рік тому

      Both Mel and Jayce in that scene are both not addressing Viktor and communicating with each other at the moment because the decisions that need to be reached are Council level, does that mean at that moment Jayce also doesn't view Viktor as a person? Mel isn't interacting with Viktor because he isn't who she needs to speak to in that given moment, why is that always being extrapolated into being that Mel sees Viktor as less than or worse sub human? As if the other time they interacted Mel didn't show any disdain or repulsion towards him

    12:45 I don't know why but I actually found this conversation one of the more revealing scenes about Mel and particularly Jayce. There they are, discussing and asking Viktor - *_who is from the Undercity_* - to build "just in case" weapons (of mass destruction?) for use against his own people. And the two seem to think that's alright. Worse, Jayce - who in his own words, sees Viktor "like a brother" - is even surprised that Viktor isn't ready to simply go along with the request.

    Mel not including Viktor in the conversation is a manipulative tactic. She has a love relashionship with Jayce and a easier way to "convince" him of her ideas, since he is more prone to accept what she wants. She knows that she doesn't have that advantage with Viktor and he seens very against what she's saying ... So she ignores Viktor and focus on Jayce, if she gains him, she may gain the discussion.

    There is a ton of hidden bits and easy to miss moment in this show. I encourage people to watch it more than once.
    Mel doesn't talk to Victor because despite his prestigious station he was Zaun born. He's from the undercity and she, from the nobility, sees him as less than her. The very issue Silco is fighting against.
    Also, in that scene, Victor *does* hesitate. It's him considering killing himself to end his suffering since he's dying anyways. It's disguised as the typical wire cutting scene but unlike those scene he doesn't switch wires (gonna cut blue but switches to red at the last second) because that's not the point of his hesitation. He then cuts the wire and follows up with saying: "There is always a choice."
    Every episode has dozens of tiny details like this. Every. Episode. It's brilliant.

    The detail of Mel never speaking to Viktor is smart: I’ve never noticed in dozens of rewatches. I’ve always been thrown off by Mel when she said to Jayce “I didn’t realize you were so close”. I mean Mel is already aware that they are close she just says she didn't realise they were *SO* close, the use of this intensifier means she didn't realise their bond was familial in a sense as Jayce later says Viktor is like a brother so it clearly isn't the fact that Mel doesn't notice, it's just that she wasn't fully aware

      @@kwabena3667 that’s not a demeanor. The time jump begins with Jayce and Mel very close to each other and the fact she didn’t notice proves either lack of empathy in general or consideration towards Viktor: maybe both.

      @kwabena3667 Рік тому +5

      @@davidtestasecca6300 Saying it's a lack of empathy highlights how Mel is never given grace and continously villainised because her not knowing that Jayce and Viktor see each other like brothers should not be shown as an indication of that when we know Mel's empathy is the main reason she was even exiled. Also stating a lack of consideration to Viktor is a reach because Mel inquires about him in Ep7 and even in Ep6 the very episode she finds out about their strong bond she tells Jayce to go be with him because he (Viktor) should not be alone during a hard time so how does that indicate a lack of empathy?

    About that scene between Silco, and the Chem Barons, that he gasses.
    The reason why it works is because Silco continues to live in the dreadful conditions of the undercity, filled with toxic gas, fighting every day for their freedom. he is used to the gasses, and they have no effect on him because he lives in them every day. The Chem Barons are just in this for themselves, getting used to living the easy life topside. His "stunt" was to remind them that they are doing all of this to save the undercity from oppression, and he hasn't given in to selfish, materialistic desires like they have. He is still fighting for the underdog, willing to do anything to achieve power, and they better not get in his way.
    Silco, for all his faults, is willing to sacrifice everything, including his own comfort, in order to free the lanes from brutal oppression.
    Makes you wonder if he's really the bad guy, huh?
