Mary Martin's lovely and inspirational acceptance speech for her Tony Award. 1960 Best Actress in a Musical Maria in The Sound of Music. New York City.
This is a wonderful glimpse of the great Mary Martin during the Sound of Music era. It's too bad that she never, to my knowledge, performed a number from this musical on television during the run of the show. What a great show business lady! Thank you for finding this very rare clip.
Regarding Martin not expecting the award, she talked about it in T.V. interviews. She felt the show had a mountain to climb because of its innocent and inspirational nature in at time when the culture was changing. Many people had said she was too old for the role of Maria and she was aware of that (as was Petula Clark many moons later). Mary was a smart cookie, made her extraordinary life and career with her own true grit, and was a realist, so she wasn't counting on this award.
Mary Martin was the legend known for Peter Pan musical ✨🎼📺 started in 1955 on black and white with 👁️📽️kinescope camera only looks less room in a peephole like and then reprised in 1960 in color🎨 on NBC in better even though it’s a little fog picture close up background but manage
She did shows that had very long runs, and I don't think she ever missed a performance. She even went on stage in Cole Porter's Leave It to Me and sang "My heart belongs to Daddy" almost immediately after learning her father had died.
I have a very nice audio recording of THE SOUND OF MUSIC (the entire show) with the original cast (CAMELOT as well). I believe it was recorded shortly before Martin left the show.
That must be amazing to listen to! Any chance you could share it with us on UA-cam? It would be wonderful to hear the original cast show of the Sound of Music!
One more thing...about the wonderful acceptance speech. There was a little more to it than met the eye. The "Music" folks were trying to draw more of the younger crowd and get them interested in the show. And part of the intention was to interest them. Mary was the ultimate pro; she knew everything there was to know about show business. When she was in a show she wasn't just in a show, she was doing everything she could to make it a long running success.
I met her in 1976 and spoke with her for about ten minutes. She was so interested in ME and could not have been any nicer! She was genuine and such a people person, even going out to mingle and see people until not long before she died of cancer...
Hi sad to say they did not perform songs from those shows back then! I would also love to see the OBC of Sound of Music. Mary and the SOM kids did sing "Do Re Mi" on a tv variety show in 1959 or 1960 and I have never been able to see it. I would love to see it. Glad you liked this clip.
@waynebrasler ---- how do you know Martin didn't expect to win? That has never been documented in any bio that I have read. Also, Martin got perfectly fine reviews for the show "warm glowing presence" or "Mary Martin at her best". I don't think these would count for less than great reviews at all. Yes the show itself did not get great reviews but the music and the performers were all highly praised.
Miss Martin's acceptance speech has echo's to her TV Peter Pan curtain call speech when she addresses the young people in the balcony . Miss Mary had to come a long way to get on that stage , nowadays she would be seated right next to the stage as her fellow nominees Miss Merman and newbie Carol Burnett ,
I'm sure Mary Martin was amazing in The Sound of Music, it's just a shame that myself and so many others who weren't around back then will never get to see it.
I saw it. My first Broadway show. Mary Martin was a wonder. The talent was monumental, but her love of what she was doing and her love of those who came to see her, just crackled across the footlights right into and through the audience. She was a classy, gracious, genuine lady on top of everything else. She was and remains one of my few idols.
Does this awards ceremony show any of the other cast members who were nominated, such as the original seven kids or Patricia Neway? I know there was some awkward way the kids were nominated. I believe as a group as best supporting actress. This show and its cast have existed only on an old cast album and in my memory until the internet came along. This clip and your lovely tribute bring back wonderful memories of seeing this show as a child with my family. Thanks so much.
Ohh such honor to see that ohh i love you i believe in fairies n i sing climb every mountain to my mother when i was young! I love you may you judy Garland sit on raibow one afternoon il sing you all Broadway song! We sing together ad i sing with you i love you!
Was that Janet Gaynor Seated next to Mary Martin ? Anyway The Sound of Music is really Miss Martins' project. She became interested in the Maria Von Trapp story and used her clout to get the book and music done. In this day the hit movie with Julie Andrews has overshadowed this play. Also Miss Mary Martin looks more like the nuns I have seen. Beautiful Julie Andrews wouldn't have gotten anywhere close to a cloister to be a nun with all the lusty men asking for her hand!
She didn't expect to win at all. She didn't get great reviews, nor did the show. But it was the toast of New York City and then the nation and then the world nevertheless.
@@mmjhcb It is really. Merman got such acclaim for that role. I love them both dearly, but I feel Merman felt robbed because nobody thought she could act but she could. If you just listen to that audio recording from the second act dressing room scene. She could act. When I watched for the full 1960 tonys for the first time I couldn't believe she hadn't won it. Then again, it was Mary so I couldn't be very upset.
@@mmjhcb Well you're very lucky you did. I love both of them very much, maybe it's just my young mind and because it's just what a lot of fans of gypsy maybe expected. I'm very much glad she won as the sound of music is a wonderful musical. Although, I have seen and read things that did infact state people thought she (Ethel) couldnt act. Not saying at all that you did. I'd love to know more about your experience seeing martin in the show. I'm a huge fan of hers and I bet it was a great performance.

A great lady. What a shame there's no film footage of her doing the show. I wonder if there's anything out there as yet undiscovered?
Would be a wonderful discovery!
There is , however, "South Pacific" that you can find on You Tube in an old production from the early 1950's

Our wonderful, dear Mary...how wonderful to see this and hear her gracious words.

Absolutely delightful thank you so much. For years I have been trying to find Parkinsons interview with her.
Thanks for all the kind comments. Glad you liked this clip!
At least there’s the soundtrack and we can fill the rest with our imaginations!
What a wonderful charming voice she has!
Having copies of things like this is good for preservation and archives and academics.
You have to love Miss Martin!!
Her son was not so shabby, either.
None greater. I miss her daily.
Hollywood had John Wayne. Broadway had Mary Martin.

I believe that both shows are still available on CD.

Forget the movie, the play is the real deal.
Shes genuinely lovely

She's adorable.
Larry Hagman got his kindness and charm from his mother, I can see. I hope they have been reacquainted.
I love that you know that.

upload the whole thing :)
Hi I have the entire show. Was there another clip you would like to see? Unfortunately there were no musical numbers performed on the show.
do you have any other speeches, like Patricia Neway's for featured actress in a musical?

do you have any other footage from this ceremony?
wow was the tony award just a medal in a case back then?
Hey, Scarecrow! What's happening?
I can sense Mary Martin speak Mid Atlantic or is it just my idea? She was American or British?
She was American but had a southern accent that she tried to hide while performing and such.
She didn't expect to win at all. She didn't get great reviews, nor did the show. But it was the toast of New York City and then the nation and then the world nevertheless.
unbelievable she one over Ethel Merman in Gypsy
No it isn't .She deserved it 100%.

Ethel Merman should have won for Gypsy. It was a brilliant performance.
So that's the... Peter Pan.
bahahahha all i can think of is PETER PAN :) that movie WAS my childhood.
J.R. Ewing's mother 🙂
@ashtonjoliet lol well the whole show would be nice if its not too much trouble ;)
Loved Martin but her win here ranks with Grace Kelly's as one of the worst ever in their respective industries.
Mary Martin had already won Tonys for South Pacific and Peter Pan. The Tony should have gone to Ethel Merman for Gypsy.
Ethel Merman should have won that year for "Gypsy". And "Gypsy" should have won Best Musical. I guess that The Sound of Money was too much to resist.
